Open Game Thread #3: Bulls at Milwaukee Bucks

[Thanks to 'Big D' for today's game preview. -Matt

The Bulls will attempt to win their first game of the season tonight when they travel to Milwaukee to take on the Bucks (7:30 CDT, WGN).

The Bucks are also 0-2, and they're coming off a bizarre ending to their game last night in Charlotte.  Trying to come back late in the game, the Bucks' Mo Williams drove in the lane and hit a layup with 0.6 seconds left.  Unfortunately, the Bucks were down by 3 at the time.  So look on the bright side; as bad as the Bulls have played in the first two games, at least they've known what the score was at all times.

The big story with the Bucks has been the progress of Yi, but so far, he's had trouble staying on the court.  In their season opener, he played relatively well, scoring 9 points (on 4-5 shooting) in 25 minutes.  Last night though, he battled foul trouble again and scored only 2 points on 1-6 shooting in 15 minutes.  Of course, it doesn't really matter how he plays; barring foul trouble, he'll be getting plenty of minutes this season.

The Bulls were 4-0 last season against the Bucks, but of course, the game everybody remembers is Ben Gordon's 48-point outburst last March.  Actually, maybe people don't remember it, because the game wasn't even televised in the Chicago area.  The Bucks aren't known for their tough defense (or really for playing any at all), so hopefully Gordon can go off again tonight.  He might have to if Michael Redd lights up the Bulls the way he did last season.  Redd scored 52 in that game last March, and averaged 38 a game against the Bulls last season.

The Bucks had a ton of injuries last season and spent most of the second half of the season in full-fledged tank mode (unsuccessfully, as it turned out), so they should be better than they were last year.  Nevertheless, this is a game the Bulls should win - but we all said the same thing last night, didn't we?

Hey Matt...
...would it be hard to add game times and/or broadcast information onto these? Or at least when it's nationally televised and where. If it is, no problem.
Yes, of course.

I can add it
That's a good idea, actually.

tonight's X FACTORS
Will Wayne make it from whatever Big Ten game he called today to the Bradley Center on time? (his green and yellow Hummer is a ticket magnet.)

Is WGN going to haul the HD cameras to Milwaukee?

Will Red ask for "Joe Green" time again?

Ha!
Oh that Wayne, he's such a whore.

I missed 'Joe' Green. Who was Red referring to? Willie?

You forgot the wish-it-was-a-joke factor of the night: bench scoring.

He was refering to Joe Smith.
It's getting sad.

Click on the "Listen to the Bulls Online for Free" picture in the middle of the page.  It should send you right to the correct page on NBA.com.  The window that pops up will give you the list of games today and you need to click Chicago obviously.  You have to have a free account setup and be logged in, but that isn't too difficult to set up if you haven't yet.

Anything better than .500 is a stretch
The team got worse this year, not better. 49 wins one year does not translate into 54 wins the next. Look at the Clippers- they completely fell apart after they won their first series in a while. Same thing with the Bulls. I don't think they can beat the Bucks tonight. I may be wrong but they just don't look like they want to play anymore.

Seriously, what is this game?
35-32 at the HALF?  Back to back bad games for Lu (so far, let's hope he gets something going).  And I've been watching Kirk since Kansas and don't remember ever seeing him have that bad a half - 0 assists, 5 TOs.  The bench has outscored the starters 20-15 so far, and Ben Wallace has more points than any of Kirk, Lu and BG.

I can't stop myself from watching, like a bad accident or something.

What do you think?Ha?

by Azabullsfan on Nov 3, 2007 8:55 PM CDT reply actions

Maybe they actually wanted to be traded,
and are mad that Pax said nothing's happening.  jk

Actually, I am starting to wonder if the combo of not getting the extension done and having Paxson come out and say no one is untouchable shook Lu up a little, because he has really not looked like himself since the season started.  I know it's their job and sports reality and all, but it had to be at least a little weird for him.  He is human, after all.

Here's an SAT question for you
If the Bulls score 19 points in the first quarter, then 16, then 13, how many will they score in the final quarter?

A.  0, because they might as well give up

B.  52, to reach 100 for the game

C.  10, this is a mathematical series decreasing by 3 each quarter

D.  if no one's watching, does the game actually happen?

by Big D on Nov 3, 2007 10:22 PM CDT reply actions

Well, we've lived through 3 game losing streaks
before.  The season has been completely frustrating so far, obviously, but I still trust that things will pick up.  For one, the team usually struggles when 2 or all 3 of BG, Lu and Kirk struggle offensively.  The shooting has been abysmal so far, but at some point the streakiness that BG and Kirk are known for will trend in the other direction.  I'm not sure what's going on with them attitude/emotion-wise, but I've got to believe that will turn around, too.

I'd be more worried if they were playing like they are capable of playing and everyone else had just gotten so much better that the Bulls normal wasn't good enough anymore.  The team is playing worse, but I don't really think they "got" worse over the summer.  It's a bad stretch, and it was bound to come at some point (as it does for every team).  It's just unfortunate that it came right at the beginning of the season.

by wjb1492 on Nov 3, 2007 10:24 PM CDT reply actions

if you think this was tough to watch on TV
you should have been there in person.

Man, oh, man, oh, man, oh man.  Worse first half I've ever sat through for both teams.  And you know things are going to be bad when you walk into the stadium, look down at the floor, and see Violet Palmer.  I've got the game recorded, and I wouldn't rewatch it except some of the calls I've got to see again.

My own theory is someone's kidnapped the real Kirk, Ben, Ben and Luol and is holding them hostage until Pax gives back that basket he hit in 1993.

Yi impressed.  Tyrus impressed but not quite as much.  If he ever reaches his full potential....

Joe Smith played well, and the team seemed to play better when he was on instead of a certain headbanded one.

Thabo needs to go to the basket, not take three pointers, but I liked his defense.

Lu spent a good ten minutes talking with Charlie V before the game, and Joe Smith exchanged pleasentries with Michael Redd.  Scott Williams was talking to Eric Helland (the strength guy) for a while.  Scott is a very, very large man.  Joachim was running springs near him, and looked so skinny in comparison.

And yes, he was running sprints.  Maybe he'll get in a game soon.

And Violet Palmer and her crew need to find another profession.

Honestly the Bulls will be fine once the
''newness'' of the season fades. I saw Redd throw some garbage off the top of his head and land a 3 ball. Loving Tyrus Thomas right now. Once everyone gets on the same page it's going to be a great team. Forget the Kobe thing it won't happen. I wonder if the injuries have slowed down the Bulls as a unit. Everyone treats the first games of the season like the NFL. It's so funny. Long Long season and they just need to notch a win.

I love the Bulls, but let me be clear here
This roster will never win an NBA title(that's what we expecting from our team, right?).Because there is no
leader in this team.I'm not even talking about a star, just a leader.Who will say:OK.my team is strugling and I'm gonna push things in right direction. Some people say that Deng may be the guy,but I doubt it.Because this story with no extension and Kobe rumors just showed us how MENATLLY WEAK this team is.And it's a huge problem!Only Ty Thomas played well enough in last two games, and Smith today. If you so shuted down by
Possibility(!) of being traded, and scared to play
hard, can you say that you are Professional? You can't,but you're brave enough to turn down 10 mil a year offer.
I answered someone above and will repeat it here:don't blame Pax for this.He did what he supposed to do as a GM.
And don't give me a shit like "this is only third game",I don't care if it's third or fifty third!
It is obvious that they not gonna win a Championship. And winning an EC(in best case)is not a goal for team like Chicago Bulls ,(may be for Cleveland or Orlando, but not for Chicago).
So.Why would you delay with this Kobe trade?Pax is trying to get him for the right price, but I'm afraid that after our bad perfomances agains teams  like 76-ers and Bucks, and after very nice game game in Phoenix,Kobe will be much more carefull in
his desires.
I hope that our guys will calm down and will be able to play like they expected to.Focus on the GAME,not on contracts and beat
Clippers first, and then Detroit (may be I'm too optimistic but I got tickets on this game,so I don't have choice :-)So by December,Bulls can be more then .500 team and we are in better position in talks with Lakers.Pax has to pull the trigger now!
You know,it's like with a sick person, you can try to save him giving medicines for couple of years(and not being sure that it's gonn work),or make a surgical operation(painfull, but fast positive results-like real chances on title).
P.S.Kobe haters, please, think about team first and then about your feelings about him.And those who so much personally attached to our babybulls, get your heads out of sand, please.I've read here that someone fans here will quit the Bulls if we trade Hinrich. That is just ..uh....Are they going to became a
Lakers fan,then????

Oi Aza... careful...
Lakers fan here, and have been since I was old enough to understand what 'basketball' is.  You don't have a corner on the loyalty stakes, and nor do we have a stranglehold on the 'fairweather' fans.  Many's the Bulls fan that joined with Michael Jordan being a star...

Anyway... I agree with you.  This roster lacks.  Direction on court.
However, I very much doubt a deal will get done with the Lakers as I don't think that Pax will give in, and Buss isn't in for a fire-sale.
Guy who may end up giving in is Kobe - on his 'no-trade' clause.  Because that's what's holding this all up.  Still, happy for him to be in Gold & Purple (or blue-purple... or whatever we play in nowadays - who can tell?) for all-time.

;)

I"m not a "fairweather" fan
I'm a true die hard Bulls fan!
When many "fairweather"(I like this termin :-) fans were chearing for MJ"s Bulls,I was not even in this country.Ofcourse ,I watched Bulls games on TV,but was not a fan. When I ended up in Chicago 6 years ago,I became a fan of this basketball club. And those
were pretty hard times.I hoped that this roster will
be able to win the Championship,but for now I just don't see it.Only if a really,really good trade hapens(like Khryapa-Howard exchange :-))
I know it will be painfull to see BG or Deng walking
away, but you have to do something. And if there is a chance to get a one greatest player in the league(for BG,Nocioni,Noah/Wallace,picks )I would say:Go for it!
Because then we have a legit shot for Championship(sure,it's not
guaranteed). But then again- nothing is guaranteed.
Maybe I'm too much emotional on this, but that is just because i want to Bulls win now.

by SlamDunk on Nov 4, 2007 4:22 PM CST up reply actions

The offense
Watching this offense is just as frustrating as watching the Bears offense.  These guys hardly ever go to the basket, you rarely see guys flashing in the paint or cutters or anything.  It seems to be just a high screen and passing around the perimeter for jump shots.  When the jumpers aren't falling, one of these guys (paging Luol Deng!!!) needs to call for the damn ball and try to get to the line.  Tyrus seems to be the best at attacking the hoop so far.  Luol disappears FAR to much for a wanna be all-star and team captain and Kirk's foul trouble is just plain dumb.  I'm not going to overreact because they usually start off poorly and rebound, but teams with championship hopes do not come out of the gates like this.  I believe this will be the last year we see this "core".

I found it funny when Bucher asked Kobe
(after the Suns game) whether the good start might have changed his mind, or something along those lines, and he gave this touching speech about how all he's focusing on is his teammates.  He didn't exactly look thrilled, in spite of his team blowing out the "mortal enemy" Suns.

according to sleuth Dan Bernstein
supposedly Bucher is the only MSM guy Kobe talks to, and is leaking through him potential trade suitors to get them to talk with the Lakers.

Thus the Pistons talk that got Joe Dumars so angry.
