Open Game Thread #2: Bulls vs. Philadelphia 76ers
[Thanks to Chgobr for tonight's game preview. -Matt]
Opening night at the UC - does life get better than this? It would if we won the opener but that diary is history. If only Wallace...I'm going to stop.
You know the Sixers are in trouble when they open their season asking their fans to judge them by effort, not by wins and losses:
" ... and management kindly requests that the team's progress not be judged solely on the pesky accounting of its won-lost record."
I cannot see the Bulls letting this get away after New Jersey. A blowout is likely but I'm leery about games like this. The cliche "don't let them hang around" will be endlessly used by Stacy King. It may be true for this game.
Is Andre Iguodala a nice player on a bad team trying to make great player money? Or is he a diamond in the rough? What would you pay him compared to Gordon or Deng? "The asking price was believed to be higher than the five-year, $55 million extension Kevin Martin signed with Sacramento." (Iggy's contract status).
For opening night it is Iggy and little company.

passion & pride is fine
Why is Reggie Evans only playing for 22 minutes?
I think the key to this game is that the 76ers have some bad players and some players playing out of position. The 76ers also have some good players, but they don't play them enough, or surround them with at least average players. The Bulls should win, unless the 76ers suddenly shorten their rotation and only play their best players in their best positions. Even then I think the Bulls' bench would trump the 76ers' bench.
I also want to make a point about the Nets game that I did not see anyone make. I think we should give the Nets some credit, and not just blame the Bulls. Richard Jefferson and Jason Kidd looked great. Antoine Wright had a great game -- that happens sometimes. Yes, the Bulls could have played better, but the Nets aren't that much worse than the Bulls on a neutral court, let alone in New Jersey. Let's hope the Bulls have gotten the opening night miscues out of their system, and come out on fire tonight.
Iguodala
I've often wondered if Deng and Iguodala could have coexisted if we'd drafted them both.

Well, at least
But still, on opening night, my NY friend was chanting "OVER-RATED" at me (and he's not even a Nets fan), and now they lose to the Sixers in their home opener?
Seriously. I know its "only two games" and so on, but it does make you think wistfully about, I dunno, say, Kobe NOT turning the ball over seven times during crunch time like Gordon did.
[Ed. note: Seven was what it felt like, I do not have "stats" to back that up]
An arresting start to the season. Let's hope they get their shit together. With this early season schedule, their is no excuse for a 3-9 start if they want to be taken seriously.
Deng was a good pick
Haha
Don't know why that's funny, but it seems like it is.

There's my Ty!
Dunks AND doesn't fall down! :)
Wow, Lu's having a rough night.
He wasn't this good Wednesday...
Worship at the alter of Thomas!
And a double-double at the half.
3 things to be done before the game is in the bag
- Put a f'ing body in Andre Miller. Smash him into the court if you have to. He must be taken out of his rhythm
- Deng and Wallace need to do something. Deng will come back strong but so far Big Ben=Big Letdown
- Attack the basket. The Philly D can be beat as seen by several uncontested layups so far. Stop shooting jumpshots.

TT is having a hell of a game
Tyrus and BG
It would be great if Tyrus can keep that level up in the second half. I'd be impressed.
Deng is playing his worst game so far in a long long time. He's overthinking it and trying to force posting up too much.
by nas on Nov 2, 2007 8:53 PM CDT reply actions
I'm definitely teaching my kid...
Noc is having a decent offensive night, too
BG, Ty and Noc are collectively 15-24 shooting, while the rest of the team is 2-17.
Kirk's having a bad shooting night so far, but doing OK otherwise - 5 assists, 3 steals, only 1 TO and 2 fouls. Much better than last game, anyway.
Hopefully Lu will settle down and make better decisions in the second half. I can live with the occasional off shooting nights, but some of those passes he was trying to make were horrible decisions.
did you catch that comcast commercial
So Thomas is guarding Dalembert...
yeah
But he's as much of a non-factor on offense...
But you're right, build, quickness, length, leaping, etc. they are good match-ups.
So looks like Atlanta got the home win
I'm gonna have to ask Sue...

So after two games
BG needs to learn to dribble and how to pass.
And Noc is probably on the court too much and Joe Smith not enough.

RELAX PEOPLE!
-
BG is averaging 26 points in two games and 7.5 Rebs. He shouldn't be running the point, but when he has had to, it hasn't been a complete mess like in years past. And Duhon is actually not playing bad behind Kirk. Kirk will come around, we all know that.
Deng is not normally this bad, and that's a very good thing. Especially if BG and Tyrus keep this up. Did anyone see Tyrus?! Is that not a good sign? We have to remember that these guys always start slow. It'll be fine.
It's two games, not the end of the world. Yes the loss sucks, but they'll get over it.
Your insane.
They have a small back court. Their best player can't get out of foul trouble. They put 60 million into a has been baby who only cares about his headband. There so called best player never shows up. BG gets doubled and tries to do too much and then turns the ball over. They can't rebound on both sides of the court and if the ass kicking by the Pistons wasn't a sneak preview into the future I don't know what is. Same team who beat an old aging Miami Heat squad. This team has been solved. Everyone knows BG is going to shoot. Then what? Don't fool yourself they have been figured out. The
Pistons exposed them.

by RogersPark Kris on Nov 2, 2007 10:54 PM CDT up reply actions
I really doubt that
Hinrich
He received a bad call in 2nd qtr on a semi-fast break. Kirk is now upset, but he is not the first player in the NBA to receive a bad call!
He then forces a foul and a technical on the very next play (3 quick points to Philly) by trying to show up the refs and to draw attention to himself. (How often have we witness this similiar scene from Kirk) This strategy will never work in the NBA. Kirk, should talk calmly to the refs and explain how the philly's point guard is schooling him all night and then ask the refs to give him a break or try a different angle to sway the refs to make some calls in his favor.
But actually he was having a good game, distributing the ball (8 or 9 assist). We all know that he can score 20+ on any given night, let Tyrus and company make up the points tonight. It will go a longer way than Kirk getting his 16ppg. Kirk just doesn't need to get upset when he is not scoring.
He needs some guidance, which Skiles hasn't provided. I really believe that Skiles strategy (motion offense? or whatever he's attempting to run) has peaked or near peaked (49 to 53 wins and similiar results in playoffs). Did Pax bet his future that Skiles would deliver? Paxson has acquired the players that Skiles wanted and got rid of the others which Skiles didn't want. Does Skiles really know what he's doing to move to the next level, has he surrounded himself with assistants that compliment his weaknesses or just more "yes" men that can't question or help him with strategy?
I was at the game and witness the boring, swaggerless Bulls for game two out of 82. Still, Noc is a gamer and plays like throw back Bull players (Sloan, Scottie and Storming Norm) and is a pleasure to watch.
Bulls start slow

Hinrich and Wallace
In terms of Luol and Gordon, they seem to be pressing. Luol's post game isn't such that we can just throw the ball into him and expect results. And Gordon's penetration has always been a mixed bag - for ever floater, one double dribble/lost ball/fall down. Both players' success has, in the past, been predicated on a heady understanding of their own limitations. I think they may be suffering from respective cases of Bethemanitis. Not in a selfish way - but merely insofar as they're trying to live up to increasing expectations.
They'll recover. And Kirk will wrap his head around the fact that he can't lead the team from the bench. As for Wallace, I can only hope that a younger and more offensively-skilled version is mending his ankle ligaments on the sideline as we speak. The sooner we shore up our rebounding, the better.

This prolly went in the wrong place
Oy vey is mere. Or something.
That was pretty weak. I mean, really, I think the Sixers have a nice young team, and I didn't really understand why they were getting beat up so much in the preseason predictions, but a REAL top level team, a team that is supposed to win the conference, does not lose their home opener to this year's Sixers.
I told all my friends in NY that the Nets were a tough match up for the Bulls and the Bulls always struggle against them, particularly in NJ, and, uh, Jason Kidd hates Skiles and burns offerings to Satan just so they can win, and, uh, um, the Bulls for some reason like to stay out on Long Island and have to take two bridges and four tunnels to even get to the Garanimals Center, and Ben and Luol were seen crying on the bus because they thought they might have to uproot their non-existent families and move to sunny star-studded Los Angeles, and so on and et cetera.
But, mayhaps, this team is a wee bit, just a smidge, oh, say an eeetsy bit . . overrated?
Hope I'm wrong. But they're not breaking 50 wins with this kind of crap happening.
On the bright side, no one will be offering Deng the max -- HA ha.
Luol Deng . . .
Pray on
I'm watching the Lakers game right now

If Tyrus has raised his game this much already

by Kemp @ Blog a Bull on Nov 2, 2007 11:48 PM CDT reply actions
From Tyrus sucks...
I wonder if what Tyrus is doing is bothering Wallace. Being as they are/should be so similar. It's not an excuse, but an attempt at an explanation. Then again, I thought Wallace played a good (not great) game against the Nets.
It's probably more because he was playing against the same no-offense-think-rebound-first player that he is.
Tyrus
5 of his 10 FG's last night were dunks/layups. I hardly classify him as a guy who "commands" a double team yet.
That being said, didn't we start off 0-9 two seasons ago? This team's no more or less a "finals" team than it was a year ago...
Relax - it's only 2 games.

I am simply saying that IF Tyrus can hit his
I'm not worried about Hinrich and Deng. I am
I think Philadelphia is better than people realize. Reggie Evans was a great pick-up. The 76ers now have four productive starters, and Green wasn't as bad as usual tonight. Nevertheless, on paper the Bulls should have won.
I agree with everyone who says it's a long season, and I also agree with everyone who is tired of the Bulls' patented slow start.

uh, whoops
If Wallace is this bad all season, the team is screwed. Hopefully he's just starting slow and/or hurt.
Tyrus was awesome, and kudos to Skiles for realizing a good thing and keeping him in.
That's all I got. As much as our depth is supposed to help, if 2 out of Gordon/Deng/Hinrich are bad, and Wallace is awful, what can you do really.
And lets all be happy that no extensions were signed, then there'd be even more reason to freak out :)

Give the guy credit he played like an All-Star. I was thinking Skiles might wana put someelse on AI. Didn't matter.
2. For whatever reason Deng killed the team on offense as well. He looks more like a spot up shooter and a guy that can get your a bucket off rebounds. Not the type who comands the ball in the post in the fourth. Little worried.
