Open Game Thread #2: Bulls vs. Philadelphia 76ers

[Thanks to Chgobr for tonight's game preview. -Matt]

Opening night at the UC - does life get better than this?  It would if we won the opener but that diary is history.  If only Wallace...I'm going to stop.

You know the Sixers are in trouble when they open their season asking their fans to judge them by effort, not by wins and losses:
" ... and management kindly requests that the team's progress not be judged solely on the pesky accounting of its won-lost record."

I cannot see the Bulls letting this get away after New Jersey.  A blowout is likely but I'm leery about games like this.  The cliche "don't let them hang around" will be endlessly used by Stacy King.  It may be true for this game.

Is Andre Iguodala a nice player on a bad team trying to make great player money?  Or is he a diamond in the rough?  What would you pay him compared to Gordon or Deng?  "The asking price was believed to be higher than the five-year, $55 million extension Kevin Martin signed with Sacramento." (Iggy's contract status).

For opening night it is Iggy and little company.

I'm just glad
that Iggy comes up next year, along with Gordon and Deng.  If enough high quality players are all up for contracts at the same time it might help put a lid on the offers.  Does that make sense?

by alec on Nov 2, 2007 4:16 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

it does
even more important is that the Sixers are one of the teams with potential cap room, so they'll be busy with Iggy.

what's the deal with MVN?
There's only a few blogs on there that are worth a read. I think there's some semi-realized multimedia aspect to the 'network', but that doesn't have to translate to a talk radioish level of commentary.

At least someone is still burning a candle for Willie Green.

I like that blog
But he is off on Willie Green love.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Nov 2, 2007 4:27 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

passion & pride is fine
the lack of anything good about the 76ers hurts. The Lakers guy, the Cavs blog, and the Bulls blog are all headaches. I've been called a "typical born again bulls fan" by the Lakers jerk, a "bitch... in my house" by Amar, and don't forget "Aaron Gray is a basketball player".

by hscs on Nov 2, 2007 4:34 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Why is Reggie Evans only playing for 22 minutes?
Why is Samuel Dalembert only playing for 25 minutes?  And can't the 76ers find a better shooting guard than Willie Green?

I think the key to this game is that the 76ers have some bad players and some players playing out of position.  The 76ers also have some good players, but they don't play them enough, or surround them with at least average players.  The Bulls should win, unless the 76ers suddenly shorten their rotation and only play their best players in their best positions.  Even then I think the Bulls' bench would trump the 76ers' bench.

I also want to make a point about the Nets game that I did not see anyone make.  I think we should give the Nets some credit, and not just blame the Bulls.  Richard Jefferson and Jason Kidd looked great.  Antoine Wright had a great game -- that happens sometimes.  Yes, the Bulls could have played better, but the Nets aren't that much worse than the Bulls on a neutral court, let alone in New Jersey.  Let's hope the Bulls have gotten the opening night miscues out of their system, and come out on fire tonight.

Iguodala
I'd rather him than Gordon or Deng and I've been in that camp since draft day.  So yes, I think he deserves to make slightly more.

I've often wondered if Deng and Iguodala could have coexisted if we'd drafted them both.

retro blog-a-bull post
I liked 'em both, but leaned toward Deng.

I also said I wanted the pick traded for Al Harrington, so...

Wow
retro blogabull.  And with 20/20 hindsight, I make the same call: draft Gordon and Deng.

by Freethefro on Nov 2, 2007 5:25 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, at least
you aren't still writing sentences like "[i]n a deep draft like this one, I'm guessing you can find a role player or two that could replace the likes of Linton Johnson or Paul Shirley."

But still, on opening night, my NY friend was chanting "OVER-RATED" at me (and he's not even a Nets fan), and now they lose to the Sixers in their home opener?

Seriously.  I know its "only two games" and so on, but it does make you think wistfully about, I dunno, say, Kobe NOT turning the ball over seven times during crunch time like Gordon did.

[Ed. note:  Seven was what it felt like, I do not have "stats" to back that up]

An arresting start to the season.  Let's hope they get their shit together.  With this early season schedule, their is no excuse for a 3-9 start if they want to be taken seriously.

Deng was a good pick
in that draft, and a lucky one, too.  The Bulls could have been left with Gordon and nobody, becaue I don't think Paxson was quite sold on Iggy at the time.  But I'd sure love to add local-guy-makes-good Iggy to the team next year.

Interesting games going on tonight
Cleveland playing even with New York, even with BronBron having a better game (can't figure out who I prefer to win this one - there should be a way for both to lose)...

Atlanta up on Dallas, but still early obviously...

New Jersey falling behind Toronto early in the game...

It's going to be a fun season.

3 things to be done before the game is in the bag
  1. Put a f'ing body in Andre Miller. Smash him into the court if you have to. He must be taken out of his rhythm
  2. Deng and Wallace need to do something. Deng will come back strong but so far Big Ben=Big Letdown
  3. Attack the basket. The Philly D can be beat as seen by several uncontested layups so far. Stop shooting jumpshots.

TT is having a hell of a game

Tyrus and BG
Tyrus and Gordon are apparently the only ones who decided to show tonight. With guest appearances by Duhon. Gordon's shot can be so pretty.

It would be great if Tyrus can keep that level up in the second half. I'd be impressed.

Deng is playing his worst game so far in a long long time. He's overthinking it and trying to force posting up too much.

Noc is having a decent offensive night, too
3-5, 7 pts, no TOs in 10 minutes.

BG, Ty and Noc are collectively 15-24 shooting, while the rest of the team is 2-17.

Kirk's having a bad shooting night so far, but doing OK otherwise - 5 assists, 3 steals, only 1 TO and 2 fouls.  Much better than last game, anyway.

Hopefully Lu will settle down and make better decisions in the second half.  I can live with the occasional off shooting nights, but some of those passes he was trying to make were horrible decisions.

Kirk needs to grow up and stop whining and start playing like Tyrus, just shut up and play hard.

My optimistic take on the game:
Bulls are such a complex offense, based on passing and moving and quick decision making, that they will take longer to gel than these other "superstar" based teams who don't need as much teamwork.

RELAX PEOPLE!
It's just two games. Look at the positives:
-
BG is averaging 26 points in two games and 7.5 Rebs. He shouldn't be running the point, but when he has had to, it hasn't been a complete mess like in years past. And Duhon is actually not playing bad behind Kirk. Kirk will come around, we all know that.
Deng is not normally this bad, and that's a very good thing. Especially if BG and Tyrus keep this up. Did anyone see Tyrus?! Is that not a good sign? We have to remember that these guys always start slow. It'll be fine.
It's two games, not the end of the world. Yes the loss sucks, but they'll get over it.
The Future is bright!

Your insane.
I watched a team that doesn't do anything well. I'm not relaxing.
They have a small back court. Their best player can't get out of foul trouble. They put 60 million into a has been baby who only cares about his headband. There so called best player never shows up. BG gets doubled and tries to do too much and then turns the ball over. They can't rebound on both sides of the court and if the ass kicking by the Pistons wasn't a sneak preview into the future I don't know what is. Same team who beat an old aging Miami Heat squad. This team has been solved. Everyone knows BG is going to shoot. Then what? Don't fool yourself they have been figured out. The

they aren't a finals team, they turn the ball over too much and like I said above......whatever I'm pissed all our teams suck ass. They don't fucking think. Great now the Lakers are playing like fucking Superstars. What the fuck is going on.......ok 80 more games ok ok ok. I think people were saying the Bulls would be in the Finals last season. Alot of teams look alot better.

Yes
a lot more teams look better. Atlanta beat Dallas, does that mean Dallas is not a 'Finals' team? The Suns are down by 30, does that mean they are not a 'Finals' team? Didn't Dallas starrt 0-4 last season? You are too quick to judge. What kind of a fan are you? Only happy when they win? Can't you see the positives?

Andre Iguodala schooled Luol Deng
It was embarrassing. Andre just dribbled right past Luol all night long, then layed it off for Dalembert to stuff it home. Who's bright idea was it to bench Heinrich for Duhon all those minutes? Duhon was aweful. Did I mention how bad Luol was? He cost the Bulls the game with his terrible defense and his terrible offense.

I really doubt that
they are waiting for Duh to win games for them. If Kirk's in foul trouble who else knows how to control the game and dribble other than Duh? I am BY FAR not a fan of Duh, but he has done what he is supposed to be doing. Backing up Kirk.

Hinrich
can't even realize when he's having a good game.  This guy is really a spoil brat.  I  believe he could be so much better if he grows up and gets some discipline to his game.

He received a bad call in 2nd qtr on a semi-fast break.  Kirk is now upset, but he is not the first player in the NBA to receive a bad call!

He then forces a foul and a technical on the very next play (3 quick points to Philly) by trying to show up the refs and to draw attention to himself. (How often have we witness this similiar scene from Kirk)  This strategy will never work in the NBA.  Kirk, should talk calmly to the refs and explain how the philly's point guard is schooling him all night and then ask the refs to give him a break or try a different angle to sway the refs to make some calls in his favor.

But actually he was having a good game, distributing the ball (8 or 9 assist).  We all know that he can score 20+ on any given night, let Tyrus and company make up the points tonight.  It will go a longer way than Kirk getting his 16ppg.  Kirk just doesn't need to get upset when he is not scoring.

He needs some guidance, which Skiles hasn't provided.  I really believe that Skiles strategy (motion offense? or whatever he's attempting to run) has peaked or near peaked (49 to 53 wins and similiar results in playoffs). Did Pax bet his future that Skiles would deliver?  Paxson has acquired the players that Skiles wanted and got rid of the others which Skiles didn't want.  Does Skiles really know what he's doing to move to the next level, has he surrounded himself with assistants that compliment his weaknesses or just more "yes" men that can't question or help him with strategy?

I was at the game and witness the boring, swaggerless Bulls for game two out of 82.  Still, Noc is a gamer and plays like throw back Bull players (Sloan, Scottie and Storming Norm) and is a pleasure to watch.

Hinrich and Wallace
haven't shown up yet, Hinrich because of foul trouble, Wallace because...well I don't know why Wallace hasn't shown up.  I mean he's out there.  Sort of.

In terms of Luol and Gordon, they seem to be pressing.  Luol's post game isn't such that we can just throw the ball into him and expect results.  And Gordon's penetration has always been a mixed bag - for ever floater, one double dribble/lost ball/fall down.  Both players' success has, in the past, been predicated on a heady understanding of their own limitations.  I think they may be suffering from respective cases of Bethemanitis.  Not in a selfish way - but merely insofar as they're trying to live up to increasing expectations.

They'll recover.  And Kirk will wrap his head around the fact that he can't lead the team from the bench.  As for Wallace, I can only hope that a younger and more offensively-skilled version is mending his ankle ligaments on the sideline as we speak.  The sooner we shore up our rebounding, the better.

Oy vey is mere. Or something.

That was pretty weak.  I mean, really, I think the Sixers have a nice young team, and I didn't really understand why they were getting beat up so much in the preseason predictions, but a REAL top level team, a team that is supposed to win the conference, does not lose their home opener to this year's Sixers.

I told all my friends in NY that the Nets were a tough match up for the Bulls and the Bulls always struggle against them, particularly in NJ, and, uh, Jason Kidd hates Skiles and burns offerings to Satan just so they can win, and, uh, um, the Bulls for some reason like to stay out on Long Island and have to take two bridges and four tunnels to even get to the Garanimals Center, and Ben and Luol were seen crying on the bus because they thought they might have to uproot their non-existent families and move to sunny star-studded Los Angeles, and so on and et cetera.

But, mayhaps, this team is a wee bit, just a smidge, oh, say an eeetsy bit . .  overrated?

Hope I'm wrong.  But they're not breaking 50 wins with this kind of crap happening.

On the bright side, no one will be offering Deng the max -- HA ha.

What a pathetic performance
I don't care if it's Game 2, Game 42, or Game 82 - the Bulls should not be losing to a team like the 76ers.  I hope Wallace is still hurting, because if he's 100% healthy, than he might be finished.  His game is totally reliant on athleticism, so if he loses that, he's absolutely useless.  Hinrich was terrible, Deng got outplayed badly by Iguodala tonight, and Gordon was a turnover machine in the 4th quarter.  If it wasn't for Tyrus Thomas, the game would have been over at halftime.  Skiles gets a lot of credit for having his teams finish strong, so maybe it's time to start giving him some blame for his teams' poor starts to the season.  Last time I checked, a win is worth just as much in November as it is in April.  This is pretty much the exact same team as last year (with the exception of Joe Smith), so there's no excuse for a poor start this year.

by Big D on Nov 2, 2007 11:28 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

If Tyrus has raised his game this much already
from last season, the Bulls will certainly be a completely different offense. Tyrus will become a focal point, where he can create for himself or get another teammate an open look. We may finally have the needed "commands a double-team" player.

From Tyrus sucks...
...to Tyrus is great?!?! You kids are so fickle. Tyrus and Gordon have been the only two to show up in both games so far.

I wonder if what Tyrus is doing is bothering Wallace. Being as they are/should be so similar. It's not an excuse, but an attempt at an explanation. Then again, I thought Wallace played a good (not great) game against the Nets.

It's probably more because he was playing against the same no-offense-think-rebound-first player that he is.

Yes, of course.

by tyger1147 on Nov 2, 2007 11:58 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Tyrus
He showed up in Jersey?  1-for-7 is showing up?

5 of his 10 FG's last night were dunks/layups.  I hardly classify him as a guy who "commands" a double team yet.

That being said, didn't we start off 0-9 two seasons ago?  This team's no more or less a "finals" team than it was a year ago...

Relax - it's only 2 games.

by bpa on Nov 3, 2007 10:03 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I am simply saying that IF Tyrus can hit his
outside shots, I believe that his already displayed ability to drive to the rim will make him the Bulls best option on offense.

by philosoball on Nov 3, 2007 10:21 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not worried about Hinrich and Deng. I am
worried about Wallace.  It's only two games into the season, but unlike Hinrich and Deng he's at an age where he could be slowing down permanently.  Only time will tell.  I'm delighted about Thomas, and I hope he keeps it up.  Again, only time will tell.  Hinrich and Deng will come around.  And Nocioni played better.

I think Philadelphia is better than people realize.  Reggie Evans was a great pick-up.  The 76ers now have four productive starters, and Green wasn't as bad as usual tonight.  Nevertheless, on paper the Bulls should have won.

I agree with everyone who says it's a long season, and I also agree with everyone who is tired of the Bulls' patented slow start.

If Wallace is this bad all season, the team is screwed. Hopefully he's just starting slow and/or hurt.

Tyrus was awesome, and kudos to Skiles for realizing a good thing and keeping him in.

That's all I got. As much as our depth is supposed to help, if 2 out of Gordon/Deng/Hinrich are bad, and Wallace is awful, what can you do really.

And lets all be happy that no extensions were signed, then there'd be even more reason to freak out :)

Hello forum. I don't post here much because opinions are like assholes, and everybody has one. That being said,I'll keep this brief. The Two Ben's are ruining this team. B.G. has a great shot, bu he is a turnover machine and a poor defender. I just wonder what he is thinking out there. And last and definitely LEAST is Ben Wallace. I don't know if he is old, but I have a theory. He doesn't want to be a Bull. He still thinks he is a Piston. Call up Sheed, bring your 15$ shoes, and go back to Motown! Not to be all bad, Thomas was great, still can't shoot free throws though. And Kirk...more of the same...this is not good at all...the Pistons already have a two game lead...

Andres had ''energy''........
and he didn't seem to kill the team like Deng did. Honestly that was one of the worst games Deng has played on both sides of the court. Nocioni has been fairly good in the first two games. He's made two clutch 3's the bring the Bulls back in both games. I'm lovin me some Nocioni this season.

Might it be time to goto the well.
Personally I'd like to see Thomas Gardner get pt. I think he can kind of take pressure off Gordon at times. I mean with what he showed in preseason, that he can get to the basket and hit the three I would think he might be a nice boost for the backcourt. Everyone else has an unknown playing why don't the Bulls play their's. It's early in the season still where it won't kill you. Sefo I know has to play better and it's important that he get's more time because the guards are struggling. Getting Jaokim back  Should help out Wallace.

1. Luol was getting abused by AI. Couldn't guard him worth shit.
Give the guy credit he played like an All-Star. I was thinking Skiles might wana put someelse on AI. Didn't matter.

2. For whatever reason Deng killed the team on offense as well. He looks more like a spot up shooter and a guy that can get your a bucket off rebounds. Not the type who comands the ball in the post in the fourth. Little worried.

The only reason not to start Tyrus was to give
him incentive to work hard on his game. After last nights game I think it is apparent that he has improved significantly. In my mind that is the most optimism inspiring developement that we could have hoped for this year. Tyrus should be our primary weapon on offense and our intimidator on defense. The rest of the Bulls should eventually be his "supporting cast".

by philosoball on Nov 3, 2007 11:43 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

And that reason was frankly dumb
But, I'm not that interested in rehashing it.  I hope your as high on Tyrus when he has game like he did against New Jeresy as you are after a game like last night.

by Scotter on Nov 3, 2007 11:50 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm high on Thomas after that game
because he showed me that he actually could take and make 15 footers with confidence.  There are a lot of very athletic bigs who can't do that in an NBA setting.  Having seen that kind of potential - which surpassed my expectations - I'm much more willing to accept relatively poorer outings, as long as the effort remains.  Playing with effort establishes a pretty high baseline for Thomas, and one that compliments our weaknesses nicely.

by Freethefro on Nov 3, 2007 12:13 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The nice thing about Thomas is that he was so
unskilled last year, that it should actually be easier for a guy like him to make big improvements than guys like Hinrich and Gordon who have already reached their probable full potential. Now the Bulls have to figure out how to utilize Thomas in the offense, which will require redistributing shots and probably running different plays, like isolating Thomas on his man a lot more.

Fourth or Fifth scoring option? Behind who?
The only guy who can go one on one consistently and score is Gordon. Tyrus certainly has that potential. OF course, it's yet to be proven whether Tyrus will fullfill that potential. But I don't see why Tyrus shouldn't be given a few opportunities during a game to ISO his man. Just as Deng is given a few oppor. to post his man so that he can develope that aspect of his game.

by philosoball on Nov 3, 2007 1:37 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

If our guards can be more effective with
dribble-penetration TT should be open for the 18 foot jumper he was hitting last night.  That can open up the floor for others to have wide open shots. If the other team starts to focus on TT making the short jumper that should free someone else open.  Boy do we need a win!

if we lose tonight.  A loss, 0-3 means waiting 3 days for a win verses the big clash with Rick Kamans on Tuesday. My meds will not be able to control my pain for three days.  A win tonight is necessary for my sanity.

There were the pluses discussed in the above thread and the Knicks did lose.  Maybe they will give us their lottery pick again out of habit.  I know it is one game but TT took a leap into new heights I have not seen to this extent before.
