Open Game Thread # 8: Bulls at Los Angeles Clippers

[Thanks to chgobr for today's game thread -Matt]

This game ignites hope or adds to our misery generating more speculation about changes.

The Clips have beaten the Bulls 13 of the last 15 times they have met, including the last 3. Tonight's Game summary. The Clips beat the Bulls 97-91 November 6 shooting 45% from the 3 point line.  Mobley shot 13-17 FGs and scored 33 points.  Chris Kaman is playing well 18 points/game, 14 rebounds, 2 blocks and poses the inside threat we long for. Luol led the Bulls with 9-17 FGs, 22 points with 8 rebounds 3 steals and 2 blocks.

Ben Wallace's confused over his lack of playing time is well documented on our Blog-a-Bull diary.  Disgruntled Wallace.  How many minutes does Big Ben get tonight? Does Hinrich build on his better shooting?  At least it is always fun to watch TT.

This Clipper team is playing well.  Even though they lost last night, they refused to go away against a hungry Warriors team on the road.  The Bulls did show some life against the Suns.  These Clips pose a challenge for us getting a much needed W.

I agree my question is why don't they ever run an ally opp for Tyrus? Like when GP was running with Cocaine Kemp? The screen. The roll. The lob pass! Why don't the ever try that? Th guy jumps out of the building. It's better than a poor bounce pass that causes him to pull up for a J.

Even Skiles is calling the team a bunch of pansies
''In your mind and in my mind, there's no reason,'' Skiles said of his players being distracted to the point that they're 1-6 after a 112-102 loss at Phoenix on Thursday night.

''But [the players] may have their reasons. I picked up USA Today [Thursday], and Kirk [Hinrich] had said we need to get out of town because there's too much going on in Chicago or whatever. I guess that's referring to the fans booing. Whatever.

''I'm not being harsh by saying at some point, you've got to have maturity for those things not to bother us if we really want to become an elite team. There's no question about it. If that is a problem, even though we play the Clippers first, [the Bryant] questions are probably going to come for two straight days. If we can put something together, you can, once and for all in your own mind, put it behind you.''

Oh, and Nocioni will start again instead of Tyrus, which blows.

New here
Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum hope we have good luck tonight against the Clips.

Anyways, going back to 1958ChiTown comment. That is exactly the reason I was always a big fan of the Kobe deal.

None of the guys in our current roster has any kind of mental toughness.

I mean... this guys are out of focus because what?

  • Kobe trade talks
  • Contract extensions
  • Being booed at home.
I remember when Kobe was accused of rape in Colorado.

I mean really, facing the possibility of ending up in jail, losing millions of dollars in endorsements and having marital problems as a result of his infidelity did not take anything away from his game.
Not to mention that he was flying in and out of court into ball games.

The guy played out of his mind during those months.

In any case, I find it inexcusable that these guys are putting up such poor performances. Especially if we consider the amount of talent they all have.

I hope they all get their act together. I would also love to see a little more from Noah.
That is one guy that I think has some of that mental toughness I was talking about.

We have a good chance of beating the Clippers tonight.
Kaman is playing great ball but sometimes falls in  early foul trouble.
I think we should explore that option. Attack Kaman from the beginning and get off to a quick start.

See you all later.

be

Hinrich
Deng
Tyrus
Nocioni
Noah

I like it !
Then we are playing 5 on 5 on offense instead of 4 against 5.  What do we do when we play Houston or Miami?

Don't worry guys
I'll be at the game tonight sitting right next to to the Bulls bench.  If they look unmotivated or anything of the sort, I'll get them going.

I'm going out on a limb a predicting victory.

I can't wait!

Clippers/Bulls tonight

Lakers/Bulls tomorrow . . . . where I restart those Kobe chants

Big Ben vs. Skiles
This last game, I do have to say was a loss due to coaching.  at the 8 minute mark in the fourth, it was tied Skiles could have put in Big Ben and default to defensive Chicago basketball.  But he put Smith in.  More than anything, they needed defensive stops and there is no better professional at that than Ben Wallace.

Say what you will about the man, but he and kirk are the defensive identity of this team.  he had some great work in this last game because his ankle is healed.

What happened to the idea that defense wins championships?  I hope Skiles makes some better substitutions tonight.

I like this as the starting linup
-kirk
-BG
-Deng
-Noah
-Big Ben
first off bech
-TT
-Noc
-and what if you put Thabo at the point so he wont take as many shots
-Joe smith
-Du

Sorry, but theClippers have this one in the bag
  • Cuttino Mobley absolutely man-handled Hinrich last time they met. I don't think Kirk will ever be the same after being abused so hard on defense. No sugar coating on that matchup, the last one was absolute rape.
  • Ben Wallace is no match for Kaman. He is 6 inches shorter and can't jump. Kaman actually scores points from the center position. Yes, I know this comes as strange to Bulls fans, but his jumphook over the helpless and overpaid Wallace will be automatic tonight.
  • Deng will choke. Dude can't hit the 2 foot chippies around the basket, he just doesn't have it. Take away his jumpshot and he's out of the game.
  • Gordon is too short to be an NBA shooting guard. He greatly overestimates his ability. He thinks he's a $15 million dollar player. Then again, when the worst player on the team gets that much...

For the sake of all that is good in this world
Let the Bulls win this game.

And if a win is asking too much, I hope at least for the following:

  1. Never to see Thomas Gardner play ahead of Thabo ever again
  2. Wallace shutting up and playing
  3. No dumbass fantasy bball lineups
  4. More (or at least a little) Noah
  5. Kirk carrying forward the shooting touch that he seemed to recover in the Suns game
  6. BG staying on his feet

by paxson43 on Nov 17, 2007 6:03 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Unfortunate circumstance
If things weren't so horribly dismal already, I would give the Bulls a chance for a win tonight.
And someone (Option27?) said that they believe the Bulls will take one out of two in LA...

I would hope for that too.
But alas, I'm not feelin' the goodness tonight...(sigh)

So here's to at least HOPING for a decent game, although I do have to admit that nothing less than a WIN will help ease this pain.

Go Bulls...(please?)

Ben Gordon might regain his shooting touch,
score 50, and have less bone-headed turnovers, but asking for him to stay on his feet... that's asking a little bit much, don't you think?
I thought the Bulls were back... turns out they're just a back end...

In the more bad news department
Deng did not practice Friday and sat out of the team's morning shootaround.

``At Phoenix [Thursday], as the game went on, it just kept getting real tight,'' Deng said Saturday. ``I don't know which play or how it happened. I really have no idea. Then, after the game, I was in pain. I couldn't even walk. I kept thinking that it would go away, but it's the worst.''

Deng, one of only two Bulls to play all 82 games last season, said he would decide if he could go shortly before tipoff. But given that he winced when he tried to get up from sitting, it appears he will not be able to play tonight.

``It doesn't look good,'' Deng said. ``I want to play so bad. We want to turn this thing around, but I have to do what I have to do to get better.''

Skiles said he was planning on starting Tyrus Thomas in Deng's starting spot at forward. Andres Nocioni, who Skiles inserted in the starting five for Thomas at Phoenix, was also in the starting lineup Saturday.

Bulls
I am tired of hearing about this teams potential! I am pissed off! I think Kirk has topped out Gordon can score and nothing else Deng needs to show up he is worth the bucks. I think Wallace is done and lets see if TT develops into a decent swingman to go with Deng. I am not all that angry about the Bryant trade because we would still be without an inside presence the KG trade now don't get me started!

Of course I am happy about the score right now, but beyond that the guys are looking as though they are enjoying themselves much more.  And who knew Big Ben could dunk! If they keep up this kind of play for four or five games in a row I might actually have my post season expectations returning again.

Only thing is the free throws.  Other than that, Bulls have more assists, more rebounds, fewer fouls - and of course the nice lead.  :)

Actually, on NBATV the game was from the Clippers'
point of view. A couple of real homers, too. "And now they're calling a flagrant on Tim Thomas." "Why whatever for? I don't understand that one at all." "Well I guess it's because they don't want this getting out of hand..." Look, there was no play on the ball by Tim "Kenyon Martin is a Fugazi" Thomas. If that happened away instead of at home, he would have been thrown out for sure.
I thought the Bulls were back... turns out they're just a back end...

by marionette on Nov 17, 2007 11:11 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

His extra bouncy hair helps.
Noc needs to grow his hair out a little bit more to add to the "whiplash" bounce he gets when he is "hit".  He did seem to get hit with the body and a hand to the back of the head on that layup attempt though. And that first elbow probably made contact and set the tone for his game.

Didn't bother me.
I felt like it was a good move letting the guys who got us there enjoy the lead for a while before putting in the bench.  It isn't like they've had a lot to enjoy this season so far.  And with Big Ben and Smith and Noc playing well we could save TT for the Lakers game.  There was no need rotating people in and out all the time with our guys playing well.

You're right - I think we all needed it almost as much as the team.  It was fun to finally watch some other team come unglued.

And the margin of victory should help to start balancing the current one of almost -10 - with a huge win, we shouldn't have to keep reading headlines on ESPN about being ranked 30th in the league!

"They had me do a psychology test and I asked Coach Skiles if that affected his coaching. He laughed and said, `No way.'" (Joakim Noah)

TV showed
everyone on the bech grinning and cutting up. Then showed Noc with the blank stare of a psychotic. Is he thinking of what he wants to do with Kobe already????

by marionette on Nov 17, 2007 11:58 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Ha!
I saw that too.  I like Crazy!Noc better than Blackhole!Noc any day though.  As long as he is getting under their skin I handle either one. I hope he has some gas left for the next game.

Good game for Noch
and for the Bulls. BB played great too, nice to see that. Hope they saved some of that energy so they can kick Kobe's ass tomorrow night.

I'm sure
they GOT some energy tonight. This is gonna be a momentum change!I just hope that Skiles won't lose
very much to Jackson, cos guys are ready to play.
My 5 for next game:
Hinrich
Gordon
Wallace
Noce
Deng

by Azabullsfan on Nov 18, 2007 12:23 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Deng better not be seriously injured. He sure
wasn't at his best tonight. The Bulls still not shooting great, but at least Noc and Gordon seem to be in mid-season form now.

Were you with the group of Bulls fans?
They kept talking about and cutting to a group of 6-8 cheering Bulls fans towards the end of the game.  Were you among them?  They looked to be having a great time.

Are you asking Option27?
He was not among that group.

That is why my comment was nested under his.  Or at least that is how it looks on my browser.

Nah
But they were pretty rad though. The were to the left of me. I noticed them walking in about an hour before the game and just thought, "I hope they sit by me"

The knew every Bulls chant in the book! Made me feel right at the U.C.

on both ends! Is that what you saw?

I'll be totally honest
What I saw was a horrible game played by the Clippers and an OK game played by the Bulls.

As for tomorrow,
The seats will be just as good but hopefully the Lakers performance wont be

We needs big ben to play that way!
I like Nocioni as the starter also. He can score and they need that. Tyrus and Wallace together is too much of a black hole scoring wise. Love Nocioni's hair, really euro. As for Sefo and Gardner thats ghetto fabuuuuuuu! Really good energy on D.

Andres Nocioni is a beast.

Minus Brand and Livingston
the Clippers have a bunch of veterans, none of whom (other than Ross) can be bothered to play a lick of defense. (Brevin is micro size, so he doesn't count). That's what sucked about a loss at home that should've been a win.

Tonight's D was really good, largely because Ben Wallace seems to be feeling better. The offense benefitted from more penetration. Usually a layup wasn't there, but there were a lot of midrange shots available. And this team has several very good midrange shooters.

Let's see if they can do the same against a better Laker team that isn't missing anyone. I predicted one win in LA, now let's get greedy. They have a lot to make up for.

I wonder if Big Ben plays ball in the offseason?
I hope he was just hurt and thats why he had been playing so poor. Noah does a really good Jack Haley.

Would you take Sam Cassell as a back PG?
Like to take Duhon's position? Next season. He's an Unrestricted free agent.

I predict...
Sam Cassell will be a great, great nba coach one day.  I think he's brilliant, especially at the little nuances that give subtle edges.

by alec on Nov 18, 2007 10:12 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

no thanks
Will Duhon command more money next season?  Unlikely.  He'll get a standard raise.

Sam can blowup a team's chemistry rather quickly.  He looked like he wanted to slap Kaman in the face a few times last night.  I think he almost punched Paul Davis.

by NBA Observer on Nov 18, 2007 11:09 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

hmmmmmmm
Well their big slow white guys who wouldn't wana slap them? (I'm white I can say that) I just think he brings so much savvy. I just think he can be a solid vet back up for one season.

What the fuck was Krause thinking back then?

Thomas was in the Curry trade
How was Krause involved besides that he was the person who drafted Curry?

by boerwinkle on Nov 18, 2007 8:29 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Tim Thomas
was the 3rd FA option after Hill and McGrady turned Jerry Krause and his band down.  When Thomas resigned, Krause settled for Eddie Robinson.

It's good to see
the Bulls smiling and actually look like they are enjoying playing again. Been rough start, a blowout was just what the doctor ordered.
