Open Game Thread # 6: Bulls vs. Toronto Raptors

[Thanks to wjb1492 for today's game thread. -Matt]

Chicago gets Toronto on the second night of a back-to-back.  Will this be win #2?

The Bulls' early season difficulties have been quite thoroughly hashed and rehashed, both here and in the papers.  The most recent outing, however, saw the Bulls grab their first victory of the season, a 97-93 win over the Detroit Pistons.  Tyrus (19 points, 14 rebounds) was incredible, and finally got some well-deserved positive press (although not from Sam Smith).  Luol (17 points) looked more like his last-year self for much of the game, and Kirk (14 assists) found a way to both stay on the floor and involved in the game even while his shooting touch is still off.  The bench, led by Joe Smith, outscored the Pistons' bench 31-13.  Ben Wallace (6 points, 7 rebounds) even contributed by sitting out the fourth quarter, quite graciously as it turns out.  All in all, it was the first really solid effort from the Bulls collectively, and I'm sure we all expect to see more of the same from them tonight.

The Toronto Raptors have had some problems of their own.  After two wins to start their season (Philadelphia and a 106-69 blowout of the Nets in NJ), the Raptors lost the next three (Boston, @ Milwaukee, and Orlando) before righting the ship with a slim 105-103 victory over Philadelphia last night.  Bargnani is now coming off the bench to increase his offensive opportunities.  After the 19 points (3-7 from 3) he dropped on the Bulls in the preseason, I'm pretty sure the last thing we want to see is more offensive output from him.  The move also puts Rasho Nesterovic back in the starting lineup to bring more defense to the first unit.  Toronto did get back to winning following this lineup shift, but the big difference in last night's game was Anthony Parker shaking off a three game slump to score 22 points.  Raptor's star Chris Bosh has struggled from the field, shooting less than .400 for the season so far, but has attempted 14 and 18 free throws in their last two games respectively and is hitting 92.3% of his free throws so far.

This should be a fun game.  Both teams have high expectations for the season, and both have been disappointed with their season so far.  However, both are coming off of wins earned in pretty comptetitive games.  The teams split 4 games last season, each winning once at home and once on the road.  I say the better rested, home team gets the win tonight, providing a positive jump off into this year's version of the annual circus trip for the Bulls.  Heck, I'm even going to go out on a limb and predict that the Bulls score an actual field goal in the final 4 minutes of the game tonight!

Oh I forgot
the game is not on Super Station WGN tonight. It's on the local WGN but should be on NBALP.

Yup.
I only get WGN Superstation so I'll be missing this one.  Which means...a win!  So far we have done drastically better in the games where I cannot see it televised.

So I have to listen to Neil and Bill tonight.

Does Tyrus start on Bosh tonight?
That'll be an interesting matchup.

by bullshooter on Nov 10, 2007 3:40 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Bosh has been horrible
I have him on my fantasy team, he cant seem to rebound or make field goals. All his points seem to come from free throw line, hence the Bulls just gotta play him well and avoid too many fouls.

Better watch out for Ford too, he's a threat with his quick drives towards the basket and his play making ability.

I hope Wallace is finally healthy, I wanna see him push Bosh around. >:)

Toronto's got a good rotation going with their PG's with Calderon averaging 6 assists a game in just under 20 minutes a game. Hinrich might have his hands full tonite?

Im 60-40 in favor of the Bulls winning!

I get the feeling...
Hinrich will enjoy defending two guys where he has a defined physical advantage over.  TJ ford is fast as hell, but he can get muscled.

by Kemp on Nov 10, 2007 5:42 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

hinrich
he cant outmuscle anyone...he can only be outmuscled.  What's he going to do?  Post-up TJ.  That's like asking Tyrus to start hitting three point shots.

Calderon
Commentator commended Calderon's "fantastic basketball IQ" when Calderon lobbied the official for a carrying call on Duhon...Du had prcatically brought the ball over his head.

Talk about offensive futility
That was an ugly quarter.  Even Joe Smith isn't hitting.  But someone should tell the Raptor's broadcast guys that it's not good defense, because they are really impressed with their team "holding" the Bulls to 25% shooting.

Burning Questions
Can the Bulls break 60 tonight?

Will Skiles develop an ulcer?

Who will be in the starting lineup against the Suns?

I bet Duhon will start for Gordon.  Since Gordon has been here, he has started at the beginning of the season.  He always strugles early and so does the team.  It's the same shit again this season.

by GoldenThreePeat on Nov 10, 2007 9:31 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

If
If that happens, and it could, it's a cop out. Gordon struggling is not the reason for the play this season.

Skiles isn't connecting with his players whatsoever. I get the 5 player substitution, but not putting a single starter back in after 9 minutes left in the third is just being stubborn and trying to prove a lesson when he's just as much to blame.

He only played 4 minutes. Why are you sudddenly castigating his shooting if he didn't shoot at all today, from his whole 4 minutes of playing?

Looks like game ball goes to Aaron Gray
For what it's worth, he's the only Bull that nba.com has with a + on the +/- rating - at +4.

Pretty depressing all around - Raps had more assists than Bulls had made baskets.  It's going to be a long, tough week till they get on the court again.  Can't wait to here Charles Barkley again with the next game on TNT.

Still love my team, though - and I have to keep believing it will get better, but I sure hope it's sooner rather than later.

Gray's +/-
Yeah, that was because he only played in the 4th quarter, when the Raptors had their scrubs out there.  I'm not sure I'd read anything into that.

Sorry if it wasn't clear - that's not an endorsement of Gray, it's an indictment of the rest of the team.

This team is what many of us knew it would be
when Pax killed the Kobe trade and just about ALL of the team's Mojo.

Lousy, lousy, lousy, lousy, better, and then the lousiest look of all season.
Just when you can't imagine it getting any more painful....it DOES.

And I'm glad I have TiVo so I can just FF and then just delete the rest.
Only problem is, I didn't delete it before I was mentally scarred by being exposed to "the matadors" (holy FAT COWS batman) doing their jelly-belly romp....I can't even BELIEVE they allow that to take place at the UC....
How can ANYONE find entertainment in that?

Worst performance of the Skiles era
OK, maybe there were a few uglier games in the 2003-04 season after he took over for Cartwright, but I can't remember a worse performance than this.  Other than Noce, everyone was absolutely pathetic.  Thabo showed why he shouldn't be playing - he might be the worst shooter of any guard in the entire league.  I don't want to read much into one bad game, since every team has a couple games like this in a season, but the Bulls could easily play much better out West and still lose.

by Big D on Nov 10, 2007 10:42 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

can't remember a worse performance than this
Not to pile on, but the so called "win" the other night against Detwat was more like a sneak by...
The Bulls are always going to get up for games against them, with nothing Skiles does or doesn't do withstanding. The players would do that simply out of instinct, with NO one at the helm.

They got lucky when Sheed missed what he normally would and SHOULD have hit at the end, in which case the Bulls probably woulda lost instead.

So all in all, even though the Bulls have started slow in the last few years (in what has become as annual as the circus trip itself), they at least LOOKED better in the past years during the string of losses.

In these types of situations when things get this ugly, SOMETHING usually happens - either a coach being fired and / or a major trade going down.

The worst part - at least from what Pax has shown and said thus far - is that it appears that it's going to get a lot worse before ANYTHING happens.

And Chicago could be in for one really bitter cold and long winter in sports.

Talent levels can't haven't declined overnight - is it that other coaches have figured us out and the limitations of our players? Maybe fatigue for lu from the summer as well?

by tomcat on Nov 11, 2007 12:12 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

They're fucking professional athletes. . .
who get paid millions of dollars a year.  If something like the crowd chanting for Kobe Bryant is actually affecting the way they play (and just for the record, I don't believe it is), then they should be traded, because they'd be mentally weak.  If they can't deal with that, then how the hell would they handle hard-fought playoff games in hostile environments like Detroit?  Say what you want about Kobe as a person, but he's never let boos affect the way he plays.  Granted, that may be because he doesn't care about anyone other than himself, but in a way that's not the worst quality for an athlete to have.

by Big D on Nov 11, 2007 12:31 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Eastern Conference Teams
appear a lot better this year than last year.  I don't believe it will be easy getting a 5th seed playoff position, especially with these continued slow starts.  The Skiles lynch mob, and the frustration with his coaching is mounting.  But he's also a lock-in for a few more years with a large coaching contract, and the Bulls have sell out crowds at the UC.  So, go to the game, buy a beer and some loaded nachos, enjoy your favorite player(s), and lower your expectations while Skiles is the coach.

50 wins or better this season is still technically possible, but the team has not shown much maturity or growth together yet?  Paxson probably is not a happy camper right about now. He should take a short vacation, clear his mind, talk with his brother (Jim), and get away for a couple of days.  He'll then have to make some honest assessments (or reassessments) of this situation, and then plot a strategy to get from A-2-B-2-C.

by exult463 on Nov 11, 2007 12:19 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

I hope John Paxson doesn't talk to his brother!
Then he might end up giving 5-year contracts to players like Kevin Ollie and Ira Newble.

by Big D on Nov 11, 2007 12:23 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Ollie
serves a roles similiar to Duhon.  Paxs or should I say Skiles will probably give Du a new 5 year contract.  What about Griffin's 3-year for what reason contract?, Ben Wallace's bad contract? Now, I think Jim has had time away from the game and has assessed his good and bad decisions and can offer something to younger bro.

I actually like Noc's 5-year contract, and Kirk's contract.

But, imo Skiles renewed contract was the worst signing in the Paxson's era, more-so than any other sigining or trade, or draft selection.

Paxson what's going on? you draft good guys from all winning programs, players that are acustom to winning, or winning it all.  And then pair them with a control dictator coach who played in only 2 NBA playoff games as a reserve and basically hasn't won much of anything ("champsionships") in NBA, college or high school. Something has to give?

Skiles last year of his contract. It will be interesting to see what happens. I wonder how the players really feel about him.

My bag.  Control Type coaches are always more effective with young players. H.S. and some college programs, but NBA players consider themselves "men".

Skiles comments in regards to removing the starters from the game show that he is over his head and ability...

"I never want to do that on a night when the boobirds are already out," Skiles said. "I don't like to embarrass the group like that. I thought I'd take a gamble right there to try to find a catalyst.

"Then it got so far out of hand so quickly that I would hate for somebody to come back in the game and get injured."

Why all 5 starters at once, or 4 of the 5 at once?

The "catalyst" is to let these guys run/push the ball a bit more, let basketball become a fun sport that it use to be to theses gym rats.

"KOBE"
"That definitely hurts," Luol Deng said. "As hard as we work, to hear the boos and 'Kobe,' it stings."

This is different than the boos in the papers you see athletes occasionally complaining at wrigley field  not only because basketball is a much more active team oriented game than baseball but because "Kobe" is such an indictment. The message is kind of F*** up: split up these scrubs who've been together for three years, we want you somewhere else, etc etc

I'm not objecting or even expressing my sympathies, I think big money athletes should know how to play through and I think it's kind of funny/admire our fans for being so demanding of big money athlete's being accountable.

by Seth on Nov 11, 2007 1:28 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

You know I think your right....
Loul Deng don't get it! This team is mentally weak. You can rattle them in big games and I think everyone is getting tired of this team they just don't seem to understand. The NJ loss was no contest a game they needed to win. Getting blown out in the first two games of the Pistons series. Losing that huge lead in the third game. Missing key free throws in the fith game. It's just sad because this team has so much tallent but so little mental strength. If your at your job and a customer has a problem with your work you don't sit back and say this one stings. You fix the problem and learn from it. In all honesty I think these guys are imature. I was impressed with them in person sucking down starbucks frappchinos. I don't think Jordan or Pippen would be doing that. They'd be gambling.

joejoe & seth
good points, I agree.  But what is the role of the coach?  In business what does the word coach mean?
mentor, motivator, encourager, protector
   or
public media basher, displaying public frustration for minor errors, a control dictator,
blaming everyone else for the failures.

Since you used a business analogy, I'll continue in your line of reasoning ... have you every worked for a control freak dictator boss? if not the environment and motivation is not very good in thoses situations.

(ya know a micro-mgr that calls every play, and tells the guards to always slow down when they try to run/push the ball up court because they can feel an internal tempo "explosive offense" inside their belly)

joejoe mentioned something about having "talented players".  I agree they are talented.  These same players weren't so mentally weak in winning college programs.  So,  is it so hard to see why they aren't performing now?

Trade all midgets to development league. Wallace deal stinks and results in :4 players offense, 0.273FT% for 15 mil a year? Paxson doesn't understand the NBA mantra
Scorers win in the NBA.

Not "character guys from winning programs who hustle." Not 60 million dollar, 6'6" centers who can't jump.

Why did they give up on Chandler? Why did they give him away for nothing and instead brought in a 60 million dollar "leader" who makes every offensive possesion 4v5. He can't even produce on defense anymore. The entire game is 4v5.

What's the difference between a steakhouse and the United Center? One serves people steak, the other is filled with a bunch of dead Bulls.

by vlad001 on Nov 11, 2007 1:19 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Now you are on to something
We lack length.  Chandler is 7'-1" and was a monster for us at end of games protecting leads.  I think he is 24 years old.  Wallace is 31.  No doubt Chandler had a bad year 2005-2007.  He was hurt and lost his confidence.  A small amount of patience would have kept him here.  We desperately could use his length and would have saved 5-6 million on salary.  Last year there were horrible teams we feasted off, i.e. Boston, Atlanta, Mil, etc. where we went 4-0 or 3-0.  This is a tougher East.  Now we are stuck with the highest paid player a dud.  We are paying Noc almost 10 mil a year.  Chandler was a steal at 10 mil when compared to Wallace. You cannot teach 7' 1".

by chgobr on Nov 11, 2007 1:38 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

This is actually what worries me the most
Is Skiles the kind of coach that can get the best out of talented young players?  I don't know but Tyson sure didn't think so based on his comments after being traded.  These "core" players are starting to look like Tyson did in his last year here, which was unexplainably horrible.  I don't include Ben Gordon in this if only because he has started off slowly every single year.  It's one thing for one player to really be in a slump, but for multiple players for some reason to be a shell of themselves, I have to start looking at the coaching staff to some degree.  This team looks horribly out of sync on offense and defense.

by bigballa10 on Nov 11, 2007 5:40 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

The most optimistic thing I can say
This group has actually started out 0-9 before and turned it around, so there is hope.  My thing is, that's fine and all, but for a franchise with championship aspirations, this team does not have the personnel to get to that point.  I believe Paxson will revisit the Kobe talk after December once Nocioni's contract can be included.

by bigballa10 on Nov 11, 2007 5:55 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

blah-effing-blah start slowly...
All this "we-always-start-slowly" BS operates within an East that didn't have powerhouse teams.  There are teams that have improved themselves markedly now in the East, a dismal start is much harder to recover from.

And on 're-dealing' with the Lakers. I believe that this was ALWAYS Pax's plan - but he did not expect that come December/January he'd be dealing from a WORSE position than in October.
The Lakers are actually playing some pretty good basketball at the moment, especially compared to Chicago.

by withmalice on Nov 11, 2007 6:00 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree
I agree with what you say about the slow start, but that was the only positive thing I could say about this team right now.  Having said that, this team will play better and make the playoffs as long as they stay healthy, so I don't know that he will be in a much worse position but we'll see.  The fact that the Lakers are playing ok probably won't be a factor unless for some reason the Bulls still suck.

by bigballa10 on Nov 11, 2007 7:06 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly chgobr,
You cannot teach height.
No idea why people declared that basically swapping a tall kid with tremendous upside for an aging undersized athletic defensive specialist and paying him 50% more, was considered a 'good idea'.  Only person who did well out of that deal is Ben Wallace, and purely from a financial viewpoint, 'cause the guy can't play.
Funny thing is, whilst we all sit around & criticize Pax on not pulling a trigger on Allen/Garnett/Kobe, the thing that's hurting the Bulls MOST at the moment is when he DID pull the trigger and worked towards getting Wallace.
I'm betting that if Chandler was still on this team, the entire group would have a bit more of a spring in their step.

And on Kirk/Luol complaining that the "Kobe" chants are a distraction and "sting".  Grow a pair.  You don't like it?  Play with a chip on your shoulder, and get even.  Worked well for Gilbert for oh-so-long, and Kobe himself never plays better than when he's feeling that he's been disrespected.
