back-to-back preseason recap-preview

Sort of half-watched the game, and it was pretty abysmal. Wallace was held out, Deng (mildly I hope) hurt his wrist early, and Gordon's still out. So you get lineups like Hinrich-Curry-Khryapa-Thomas-Noah, and thus lots of turnovers. Noah did his best Tyson Chandler impression, which was scary to see. Hopefully it was just a bad outing because I thought he had been doing a good job catching and finishing strong.

Tyrus also looked shaky at points, especially in a stretch guarding Andrea Bargnani where he was consistently baited into fouls or getting caught off balance. Ryan McNeill of HoopsAddict.com was credentialed at the game and kindly passed along to me this postgame quote from Tyrus:

"He is a tough assignment you have got to try and stop him from getting going because he is such a great shooter. He is just a tough assignment, but we have to do it when the regular season comes, so we have to get it done."

Ryan also gave me this from Skiles:

"We just didn't show up tonight in any real shape or form. I thought it was the most unprofessional we've looked so far. We were totally disorganized and the effort was poor. Basically everything we did was losing-type basketball which is something we don't normally do so back to the drawing board."

Eh, it's not as much losing-type basketball as it is just preseason basketball. But hopefully things at least look better tonight against the Pacers. Since it's a back-to-back I don't know how many real lineups will be seeing. Preseason is for Aaron Gray, not for me.

Dish
But I just realized that it's probably because I'm out of region - I haven't figured out all the blackout stuff yet, but from what I understand Bulls games shouldn't ever be blocked out down here.  Mavs games may be, but I couldn't care less about that!  :)

I guess this is the one time that living in the middle of nowhere works to my advantage.

We had NBALP with Dish
last season but changed to Direct TV to get the Big Ten Network thinkng that Dish wasn't going to get it. I hope with Direct TV we aren't going to be blocked out of the Bulls games on NBALP. We can get most of their games on CSN and WGN but still I'll be pissed if we are blocked out on Direct TV.

Funny how preseason is so exciting when it first gets here, just to have basketball back in the news and all, and then about now it starts getting really old!  I'm feeling ready for normal lineups and games that count.

Kind of ironic
I'm down in Oklahoma, so everyone here is psyched at the possibility of getting the team.  I followed the Hawks and Ms growing up, but never liked the Sonics since Portland had the Blazers.

only 2 fouls so far
for tt.  that's good considering his performance yesterday.

oh and all you still hatin on tt for taking his summer at home, he's still the youngest guy on the roster.  It's going to take time for him to develop.

by brianmita on Oct 20, 2007 9:30 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, but the point is he could and SHOULD
have improved himself...

Just 'cuz he's young is no excuse, and the Bulls staff have been public with their unhappiness about it too.

Is it spring training yet?

by Bluelou on Oct 20, 2007 9:35 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yeah
I get you, but lets say that if Noah does next summer what tt did this last one, then I'd be very disappointed.  The organization has to publicly call tt out, but I think that they understand that every player is different.

If TT doesn't do the summer work next year, then I'll be disappointed.  I'm sure his teammates will too.

but if this game is a benchmark, I'm impressed that tt has gone twenty minutes and he only has 2 fouls.  being humble about guarding bargnani is another good step toward tt being a complete player.

The way I see it
you don't have the luxury - especially in this day and age with sports - to think casual.
You gotta try and win NOW - there is no tomorrow.
You never know what will or won't happen, and these guys make more than they ever have.

And the Bulls could really use him being more mature, if nothing else.

But that's just my opinion and nothing more.
It's not a right or wrong, and I see yours as well.   :-)

He's a tough assignment,
bigs aren't used to closing out all the way out the three point, and they're even less familar with a 7 footer that pump fake and dribble all the way to the basket.  Bargnani's been lighting people up all pre-season.  Tyrus and others have to close out with better technique, but Bargnani's good.

Did anyone see in the begining of the game where Gray made this sweet fake give to Hinrich and then drive to the basket olny to get a charge? Then my question is, was Skiles yelling at Gray or the ref?Cause it seemed scary. Hinrich is a poor mans I don't know. He could go away and I wouldn't care a crap. Kirk's a top ten point guard
selected for team usa last year.  elected captain every year since his sophomore year. maintins good shooting percentages.  One of the top defenders at his position, often giving up half a foot in height to his opponents and keeping their percentages down.  End of story.

by brianmita on Oct 21, 2007 11:04 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You can throw alll the stats you want at me.
He's inconsistant and in the playoffs he couldn't get his own shot off except for the one good game he had at Detriot. Hmmmmm wasn't Tyson Chandler also on team USA? Captain?Ok he's a decent guy who knows how to run all the plays. He gets in too much foul trouble. He doesn't create for other players which is what a point man should be doing. His passing is suspect. He played like crap for most of last season.  Your brain washed! End of story!

Another thing is
if he can't create for others then he better be more like A.I. rather than letting the shot clock wind down and dumping it off to BG. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2D_pwLLUBUU

Whatever your points or point is/are rather weak.
First you just think he is cute you have stated that before. Second Im sorry he can work as hard as he wants you can't change the way he plays. He can put muscle on all he wants. The Bulls need more than fine. Fine is like good or average. I want a great point guard. The problem is they are rare these days just like finding a true center. When was the last time Hinrich make a great pass to another player like a Nash or Kid? You never see that because he's a short 2 playing the 1. I played point for many years in high school and one year of college until I messed up my knee. It doesn't take much to see Hinrich is not a starting NBA point. He would make a nice back up on any team. But he hurts you. He can't guard and is always in foul trouble. Yeah he make some 3's now and then but if you watched the last preseason game you might be able to see my point. No pun. I don't understand why he gets a pass in this town. I'll never understand it. Yet guys like BG who has kept this team in games, is constantly in trade rumors.
''This whole parties out of control!''-Moose

by joejoeEnglish94bulls4ever on Oct 22, 2007 12:49 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

the reason
you always see BG's name in trade rumors is because his trade value is HIGHER than Kirk's.  It took me awhile to see it like that too, but it's more of a compliment than it is anything else.

If other teams (including the Bulls) thought that Kirk was a more valuable piece than BG, then you would see his name constantly in trade rumors.

Fact is, nobody wants Kirk.  Sure a team would take him in a heartbeat, but nobody is trying to trade anything away for him.  Teams always inquire about Ben because of the caliber player that he is.

Jerry Buss (and other owners) want someone who is instant offense, someone who has the capability to score 50 in a game...aka Ben.  They don't want someone who may be decent and will only get them 15-20 a game with 5 assists.

the trade value for BG is higher than Kirk because
it's an attempt at a fleece job.  ben's got huge upside, and he also is in his first contract.  So for trade machine purposes, the bulls would have to sell the farm for making smarter draft picks than the team asking.

sorry.  no dice.

Your comment
that I think Kirk is cute is asinine. Obviously you didn't see any of the preseason games. Kirk has had some great passes. Sorry you missed them. It's clear you are just jealous of Kirk. If he is as bad as you think he is he never would have been asked twice to be on team USA. You are in the minority here. I guess we disagree on his value to this team.

I hate that word.
I did watch the last perseason game. He sucked. I don't think I have to even look at the perseason. look at some of Paxson and Skiles comments after the season ended. They finally said something abouthow Hinrich needs to get better than he is.

Sigh
What Pax and Skiles said was he needed to get stronger. In other words he needed to bulk up which he did.

The last preseason game? Hell they have all sucked at one time or another this preseason. You don't like him I guess you will have to live with it. He's not going any where.

it's an asinine comment
because the 94 in joejoe's refers to his birth year.  at least, it does in terms of maturity.

sorry for the smack back, but JoeJoe, please don't insult one of the most respected posters here.  it's rude.

I'm not a huge Hinrich fan
either.  (My first 5 or 6 posts here all had his name misspelled.)  When I read about him from other than Chicago sources, I get a completely different picture of him than the one presented by the local sycophants.  His defense is definitely not universally respected.  He's considered too slow to guard other teams' PG's.  He's considered too small to guard other teams' SG's--although he gets some sympathy because he's often forced into it due to BG's hopelessly inept defensive play.

He does get kudos for general grittiness, but he's also often characterized as a whiner.  And even our home broadcast teams point out that he tends to hang his head and get discouraged when things aren't going his way.

Still, I see him as a decent role player, who, as long as he sticks to his role, is fine to have on the court.
