Hollinger the scout

I kept the original thread intact to preserve the initial discussion while the Hollinger stuff was getting released. So, despite what the header says these are my words. -Matt

He's not just a numbers guy, and that comes through especially in his player projections. Here are some selections from these write-ups, as I walk the tightrope of content-theft with ESPN.

Luol Deng:

What's amazing about Deng's offensive game is how much more it can be improved. There is little or no trickery when it comes to his offense right now -- he rarely shot fakes and consequently has a very low free-throw rate for a scorer who drives as much as he does...also has almost no post game, which considering his size could be a great weapon in time.

Most similar at age: Ricky Davis

Ben Gordon:

Gordon's jumper is a thing of beauty...must improve creating shots for the other four guys. Although his skills as a scorer aren't in doubt, he doesn't see the court well and he tends to force passes into traffic, resulting in an unusually high turnover ratio for a jump shooter...still shoots predominantly going to his right and from the right side -- his left hand only touches the ball if it's thrown at him.

Most similar at age: Rex Chapman

Kirk Hinrich:

Hinrich made second-team All-Defense last season, which seemed a stretch -- big guards shoot over him quite often and there isn't much he can do about it...Offensively, Hinrich has become much better at finishing around the basket...Hinrich minimizes turnovers and his scoring more than makes up for the minor quibbles about his passing.

Most similar at age: Sam Cassell

Tyrus Thomas:

Thomas' physical skills are something to behold, and he could be an absolutely dominant defensive player in a very short time...As you might expect from a player this young (especially one as cocky as Thomas), he tried to do a lot of things [on offense] he couldn't...a great finisher around the rim but needs to learn to rein in his desire to take opponents off the dribble, a facet of his game on which his skills are decidedly unrefined.

Most similar at age: Shawn Kemp

Thabo Sefolosha:

Sefolosha showed he has miles to go offensively... managed to finish in the bottom-10 at his position in both the rate of 3-point attempts and the rate of free-throw attempts per field-goal attempt -- nearly every player who is bad at one is good at the other, but he's a rare exception...doesn't need to be great because his defense and rebounding are so valuable, but he can't be firing the ball all over the gym and bricking 17-footers the way he did last season.

Most similar at age: Lucious Harris

Andres Nocioni:

when he was healthy, Nocioni was as good as ever, firing more often from 3-point range...is starting to turn into a bit of a black hole...his trigger finger has become increasingly itchy...an outstanding team defender.

Most similar at age: Mark Alarie

Predictably ('cause I'm a hater, of course), I have a quibble with the idea that Noc is an 'outstanding' team defender, and I'm curious if Hollinger merely used his high volume of charges taken as evidence. I also think Tyrus should attack the basket more than take jumpshots, but Hollinger suggests neither.

And don't freak out over the player comps, those are only the most comparable, there could be other more enticing comps that, while not the best, have a statistically insignificant difference to the best.

yeah, just buy it. Although it really stinks that they can't find a way to make the whole effort downloadable and printable. The computer monitor makes it rough enough on my eyes as it is.

insider = simmons archive
Screw Hollinger's previews, I want to know what Bill's boys from Boston did on their first trip to Vegas.

Eastern Conference previews are up
Hollinger has the Bulls going 55-27, and finishing with the best record in the East.

not to put out the fire
but to me it seemed like he was basing post seasons success of a meidum size trade dealine move

A trade is pretty likely
the Bulls have way too much talent for everybody to be happy, especially the way Skiles seems to have favorites and give guys huge minutes.

But....
They have so much talent that I'd be shocked if they fell flat.

I like the versatility of this team, which is the deepest in the league.  We might not have a superstar (yet), but we've got a few potential budding all stars in maybe Kirk, in maybe Ben, in most likely soon Deng, in maybe Big Ben, in maybe Tyrus Thomas, and maybe someday who knows Thabo and Noah.....

The depth is fantastic though, we've got several guys that can easily play multiple positions:
Kirk PG/SG
Ben G: SG/ and contrary to some here some PG
Luol: SF and maybe now SG and maybe some PF
Andres: SF/PF
Tyrus: PF and maybe some SF
Noah: PF/C

Of course I'm telling everyone here something they already know (since it's a Bulls blog for Chrissakes, but I'm used to writing on these big nba blogs, and besides I'm just excited for the preseason to start.

Looks mostly positive...
Hollinger had mostly nice stuff to say about the starters and key reserves, anyway.  I almost feel sorry for Duhon and his reputation as a partier at this point:

"expect Duhon to do much of what he did last season, playing 20 minutes or so a night behind Gordon and Hinrich. If so, he should be reasonably productive, and, at 25, he has a chance to surprise with his numbers if he spends more time at the gym and less in the VIP room."
http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/players/hollinger?statsId=3855

And he puts Lu's contract value at "about $70 million," which seems a little higher than what has been thrown around on here.  No mention of an extension for BG in his preview.  http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/players/hollinger?statsId=3824

"They had me do a psychology test and I asked Coach Skiles if that affected his coaching. He laughed and said, `No way.'" (Joakim Noah)

It is interesting that Duhon's rep has
reached national status.  At one point I was considering giving Duhon on a break for not improving because of his back surgery last summer.  But the possibility of Duhon improving fails to excite me.

Duhon's still on the team?! Damn!
Let me go throw up now!!!!
Is it me or does Lebron walk like a duck?!

It's some what validating to see alot
of what myself and others have written about this summer show up in the player reviews.  There's alot of analysis similar to my own, but written much better.  Now that I've immodestly patted myself on the back, a couple of points that Hollinger highlighted that I haven't seen made.
  1. Deng and his lack of offensive trickery.  That struck me.  With all the talk about 3-point shots and posting up, why hasn't there been talk about the simplest signficant thing Deng could add to his game.  A pump fake.  It would lead to drawing more fouls and driving more without actually needing to add new skills.
  2. One thing that makes the Hinrich/Gordon backcourt work so well is that Hinrich prefers to play on the left side and Gordon prefers the right side of the court.

by Scotter on Oct 5, 2007 4:17 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

yikes
I wouldn't describe any of that as easily overlooked either. I've mentioned Deng's low free throw rate, which is deserving of half credit for offensive trickery.

I've never noticed 2 before. I guess it isn't something I take note of. Hot zones confirm it.

nba.com hot zone fun
I wondered where Crawford would have fit in all of this, and his past few shot charts show a preference for everywhere.

Tyrus Thomas's Hot Zone Map
Looks a little like Where's Waldo.  He needs to get a 8 ft jumper.
Get that out of Tyrus' House!!!!

by cubbybear on Oct 6, 2007 1:57 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Layups 1st, jumpers later
He only made a 1/3 of his inside shots that weren't dunks, but that was also 40% of his shots.  If he ever makes 1/2 of them, the kid's FG% goes through the roof without improving the jumper a lick.

by Scotter on Oct 6, 2007 2:32 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

heh
for a team that supposedly shoots too many jumpshots, doesn't everybody seem too antsy to see tyrus shoot them too?

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Oct 6, 2007 11:13 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Word
I'd just as soon see Tyrus take every shot this season at a place from which he could touch the rim
Score. Or do not score. There is no clutch.

by preverbal on Oct 6, 2007 12:32 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with that.
I should clarify that I want him to make about 6 of his first 8, then make them look silly with pump fakes leading to dunks all year.  More a facilitative shot than becoming his primary, secondary, or tertiary shot(Which btw are all dunks right now, which is great).  I also hope his shots end with Red Kerr saying, "Don't hurt 'em, young fella!"
Get that out of Tyrus' House!!!!

From the Yi profile:
http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/players/hollinger?statsId=4284

"The Bucks' first-round draft choice is listed as 19 years old, but just because something is listed for official purposes doesn't make it true. For instance, Michael Sweetney was listed at 270 pounds last season; apparently they failed to record what happened when his other foot hit the scale."

Hey!
He swears his 19, and that's good enough for me.  He may change his tune when he realizes he can't have any micro-brews while hanging out in Beer City.

(Although one player released from last year's team was probably released because he was drinking too many micro brews while haning out in Beer City)>

Speaking of Tyrus, did anyone see the new
Sam Smith hack job in the Trib this morning?

I can't link it because I am posting from my Blackberry, but basically Smith claims that Tyrus isn't a hard worker or a "willing learner." Moreover, according to Smith, Tyrus "disappointed" the Bulls by failing to work out at the Berto, which is contrary to other reports I read earlier this summer.

I don't know what the real story is, but I do know that Smith clearly has as anti-Thomas agenda because, like a 12 year old girl who didn't get asked to the winter dance, he is mad that Tyrus doesn't talk to him in the locker room. It gets old and hardly constitutes impartial reporting.

I read it
I don't know what Sam's problem is.  He does like to grind axes, he even had a stupid joke when talking about Eddy Curry's home invasion.

a tad too much
of the hustle>talent/lazy formula for me.

"But players with that kind of talent often take shortcuts, and Thomas does."

Sweeping generalizations are rarely a good way to point out a flaw in an individual. Sometimes "talented" players just aren't that good at basketball too. What shortcuts are even available for Thomas to take?

by hscs on Oct 8, 2007 8:07 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I saw it too
And it drives me crazy when sportswriters feel the need to tear one player down when writing about someone else.  If he wanted to write a nice piece about how great Noah is coming along, he could have done it without denegrating Ty with every other sentence.

He's on the "whatever" list now: anything Greg Couch writes about Kirk, anything Sam writes about Ty, anything Matt writes about Noc...  ;)

Thomas is most similar to Kemp?
Seems like a bit of a reach. If Thomas really is comparable to Kemp-- when he was clean and lived above the rim-- it makes me really happy
"My jumper's so smooth it will seduce your girlfriend." -1958ChiTown

Yep
Someone (sbulls?) made this point right after the season ended.  If you look back at Kemp's rookie year, it is very very similar to TT, and if you look at Kemp himself during his rookie year, he even looks a little like TT.
Score. Or do not score. There is no clutch.

so basically t-time is our best player
and given the players on our team we should win somewhere between 5 and 7 games a year.....so i guess the whole is worth a hell of a lot more than the parts

ricky davis...really? that's insulting

by milesgmsu on Oct 9, 2007 7:49 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Remember it's a computer system, it doesn't
know it's being insulting.  PER only really looks at the offensive side of the ball.  Any small forward that shoots a good FG% without taking many 3s looks alot like Ricky Davis to the computer.  Lots of other players had Ricky Davis as their closest comparison
