Open (preseason) thread #2: Bulls vs. Dallas Mavericks

In the question of who's playing or not, I'd assume everyone who's a 'maybe' is likely out, because...why not?

I don't get it
I checked my direct tv guide and comcast is airing the Blackhawks game...is this game on another channel?

by Option27 on Oct 12, 2007 5:41 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It looks like
NBA League Pass is showing it.  I heard from someone that it's free till after the first week of the season, but I don't know if that includes preseason (or even if that is true, for that matter).  I actually didn't know it showed any preseason when I ordered it, but the game is showing up on my channel guide.

Glad to help!
Truthfully, I just stumbled across it - I wouldn't have thought to check either.

This is my first year to get League Pass, and I'm so excited to get to actually watch all these games instead of just following on Gamecast!

That really stinks
I wanted to tape this with my DVR after the Bulls.com site listed it as being on Comcast, but my DVR had the blackhawks game listed, so I figured it was on league pass. It never dawned on me that league pass might be free......I hate the league pass, it's way too expensive (at least $50 too high if not more so) I don't think I'll ever buy it just based on principle, but that stunk.  I couldn't see the first game (our DVR was broken) and I couldn't even tape this game because I didn't think it was on TV.  I want to get a view of the young guys before the season starts.  Hopefully I'll be able to see the next game (probably not all of it because it's preseason, but hopefully some of it).

And on top of that
you've got the Bulls' commentators making fun of how short the other team's guard is.  It's crazy stuff.

Wow these
rookies are nice! Gray is better than I thought. He's huge. The starters looked shakey on D. Noah is a baller. He does the little things so well. Almost like a Rodman type. I would imagin that could be frustrating for other teams. But over all these guys seem like they can play right now. Looks like Gardner is a lock.

Completely over your Yi man-crush already?
I'm happy to hear that the rooks are playing well.  I came across this bit in the Daily Herald which makes me worried that Aaron may be too tough on himself:

In the Bulls' locker room, Gray acted as though he'd just lost the game for his team.

"Maybe my stats are OK, but I'm making so many mistakes out there," he said. "I have a lot to learn yet. Especially defensively, my rotations are so slow. I'm not seeing everything as clear as I should. It's going to take some repetition. With hard work, I think I'll be all right."

I've been high on Noah since we drafted him, but Gray is growing on me quickly.

by paxson43 on Oct 13, 2007 10:22 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If the Bulls
had had passed on Yi, I would probably never be completely over Yi. They had no choice and Noah fell to them. Best player available at 9. The way it's looking, a lot of teams are gonna be kicking themselves for passing on Joakim.

As for Gray, it's making it easier and easier to not even wonder about Hawes in a Bulls unifom. Call me foolish, but it looks like Hawes would have been doing the same thing Gray is. I KNOW IT'S PRESEASON.

I can't get the game on tv...
for reasons I don't want to go into right now, but I listened to the game on the mav's radio network... and the mavs announcers had nothing but great things to say for noah and gray... i think that tells you all you need to know.

Just got back from the game
  1.  Section 213 does not ever receive parachute tee shirts
  2.  The Benny the Bull video of them throwing shit off of the united center roof is hilarious
  3.  The halftime dancers are way better than the loveables
  4.  The Loveables are even worse this year than normal.  And ugly.
  5.  If Tyrus plays at a minimum like he did tonight I'll be real happy.  He hit a couple shots.  Enough to keep you somewhat honest.  He is a very good defensive rebounder.  He made a few hussle plays.  He got to the line and shot decent.  Add a few exciting athletic plays and keeping the turnovers and stupid forced offense to a minimum and you have a pretty good game.
  6.  Grey.  What else can I add.  Player of the game.  Double/double.  But he does it in a way that tells you he could do this often.  There was nothing spectacular here, just real solid.  I see an upside of a Brad Miller.
  7.  Noah.  As Option27 and Joejoe said above, he is solid as hell.  It is not a coincidence that his cross court passes turn into made shots.  Its because he delivers the ball excellently.  He didn't have as good of a game tonight as in game 1, but even his lesser game puts him all over the state sheet.
  8.  Big Ben did not have a great game.  He fell back into that uncoordinated offensive shit.  And Defensively he wanders and the week Mavs centers still make him pay.  I wish Skiles had the guts on nights where he does not bring it and in mid season when his body needs a rest, to limit him to 20 minutes against some teams and let Grey, Noah, TT and Smith get the minutes.
  9.  Noc played terrible until a great stretch.  He needs to be more of a matchup guy.  He couldn't match up with Stackhouse or Josh Howard.  But he will be a great 6th man as he can light it up.  he is tough.  Brings energy and takes the charges.
  10.  Kirk will have a great season.  He is not a top 5 point guard and never will be.
  11.  Deng's post game is for real.
  12.  Gardner can/should make the team.  Apart from the athletic plays, he also is pretty solid and error free and can shoot a little bit.
  13.  I don't know about Jameson.  He doesn't look like anything special.  However, shooting guards take a while to get used to what it takes to get their shots off on the next level.  Even Ben Gordon looked like he couldn't do it at this level until half way through his rookie season.

I agree with your Kirk analysis
he's average as a point guard. Im starting to think Joakim might be a better passer. He has his games but he's not what he used to be. Maybe he turns it around but he frustrates me at times missing wide open players. I kinda liked that he was looking for his shot more tonight because there were many times againts the Pistons where he killed the Bulls by dumping it off to BG with the shot clock winding down. If he could just play like the Kirk from Kansas who was the pest player on the floor hands down. Now not so much. http://youtube.com/watch?v=3BCie2ol3OM remember this Kirk? I hope we don't have another Rex Grossman.

Wallace looked old and washed up.

Well it's only the second game of the Preseason so there is room to improve. The Starters looked pretty shakey tonight. They need to clean some things up.

Give Ben Wallace a break!
It was a pre-season game.  You think he would play all out like it was a playoff game??  I mean Lebron James had a horrible preseason game the other day.  There is no information to be gained by watching a veteran in the preseason.

I'm with you on Gardner
Gardner should make the team.  He's a big athletic guard.  He should have an edge over Barrett on the simple fact that he has 8 inches on Barrett.

Also, I'm with you on the lovabulls.  what's the deal?  Is it a P.C. thing where ugly girls have an equal chance of getting on the squad?

* Disagree with you on Ben Wallace.  I think he will have a great season.  I think he finally feels comfortable in Chicago.  Plus he has his headband. hahaha.  Uncordinated?? huh?  He is an athletic player + has a great feel for the game.

Also, the Bulls organization would never do this...but, go back to the old Chicago Stadium policy.  No time-out distractions for the casual fan.  I'm getting so sick of Benny the Bull, t-shirts being shot into the crowd, inflateable benny races, and all that crap.  Keep the Donut race simply because it was done in the Chicago Stadium.  It should be JUST ABOUT THE GAME!

It was really nice to see
all of the things you expect to see and hope to see come to fruition.  The big guys making layups and FTs.  Tyrus making 40% of his jumpshots, and staying out of foul trouble.  Actually having a size advantage up front.  The team playing faster with the bigs running the floor.

Now Gordon and Sefolosha need to join the fun.  Joe Smith is welcome to stay injured for another 4 weeks.

Nick Fazekas
Did anyone notice how odd Fazekas looked while trying to get up and down the floor?  The NBA game is way to fast for this guy.  I know he was a low pick, but how could any scout suggest taking this guy?
Is it me or does Lebron walk like a duck?!

by GranvilleWaiters on Oct 13, 2007 12:18 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He rebounds and shoots really well
and he was pushed by the statistical analysis guys like Hollinger.

by Scotter on Oct 13, 2007 1:21 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He won't do that in the NBA!!!
When you match him up with a physical player....it's game over!!!  The guy had a decent college career playing against inferior competition.  He simply is not athletic and he stays on the outside because he can't handle the inside play.  He reminds me of Brad Sellers.  But, Seller's was way more athletic than Fazekas.  That's not saying much.

Just because he was pushed by Hollinger, doesn't mean he's a good player.

*** FROM DRAFT EXPRESS.com

Weaknesses
The big question about Fazekas, and the reason that he might be kept out of the 1st round is his physical strength. Even though he puts up great numbers, they are usually against weaker competition. He is not the ideal physical specimen most teams look for in a power forward. Because of that he might have trouble against superior athletes at that position.

His lack of strength could cause him to get pushed around by bigger players, and there are major question marks about how he will be able to hold his position on the block. His upper body strength is especially poor. What's most concerning about this is the fact that his frame is extremely narrow, particularly in his shoulders, which leads you to believe that he will have a very difficult time putting on more weight.

His lack of athleticism is also an issue. Fazekas is just an average leaper at the college level, and noticeably lacks quickness. He runs the floor fairly awkwardly as well. Defensively, this lack of strength and footspeed is a major concern. Laterally, his feet are likely not quick enough to stay in front of perimeter oriented power forwards, while in the post it's hard to see him matching up very well with bruising back to the basket types. Fazekas is already an average defender at best, so one has to question what to expect out of him at the next level.

The ironic part about Fazekas's ability to shoot the basketball is the fact that while his jumper looks excellent, his shooting percentages from the 3-point line have gone down since his freshman year. As a freshman he was truly a perimeter big man that could really hit 3-point shots. However, as defenses have paid closer attention to him, his 3-point shooting has gone down.

Even though his arsenal of post moves is quite developed, he might have trouble against players that are almost always going to be strong than him. Will he still be able to get off the same type of shots he did in college at the next level, and will he be able to adapt his game to a different type of defender? He will also have to learn how to get post position against players that will physically not let him set up and get the ball freely.

Another issue with his lack of strength is the fact that potentially he could have trouble rebounding and boxing out strong players. Even against weak competition, at times he gets pushed around under the boards too easily.

Is it me or does Lebron walk like a duck?!

by GranvilleWaiters on Oct 13, 2007 2:44 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You asked how a scout could suggest taking him.
I answered.  I wasn't defending the pick, or offering my opinion.  I have no strong opinion on awkward Nick.  He was a 2nd round pick though.  And there are plenty of tall soft slow 3-point shooting PFs that have stuck in the league for a few years.  So Dallas might still get a decent return on a 2nd  round pick.  A big man that could shoot is one type of role player, they lacked with Croshere living.

by Scotter on Oct 13, 2007 3:12 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I didn't agree with your answer.
I really don't have a strong opinion either.  I went to the game last night and I noticed how odd he ran the court.  That's all really.  If you read his weaknesses, he really isn't much of a three-point threat.  I'm just saying he's not going to make it.  That's my opinion.
Is it me or does Lebron walk like a duck?!

I was listing the reasons why Hollinger
said he might play okay in the NBA.  I realize it sounds like my opinion, but it was intended as that.  And Nick did rebound really well and shoot efficiently in college.  Which is why statistically he looked good even after controlling for the level of competition.

It doesn't exist when there is nothing to show...but even when there is, I can never find it.  I've called Comcast, I've called DirecTV (which I now have) and both gave me the same answer...that they don't carry it.

Not too much of a big deal I guess since there's only 3 games on Plus this season...but those will be 3 of the most boring nights of my year  :(
