Game Thread #33: Bulls at New Jersey Nets

What to do if you're the New Jersey Nets?

Your big three is getting old (Kidd), hobbled (Jefferson) or indifferent (Carter). Your post scorer is out for the season, meaning that the worst offensive starter in the NBA is getting even more playing time. You know your coach is likely a good one, but nevertheless seems to be on the verge of having his team quit on him (and if it hadn't been cemented already, Jason Kidd would then be officially 'coach killer of the last 2 decades'). And are pretty much in cap hell, dealing away one of your few trading chips (the expiring contract of Jeff McInnis) for pretty much nobody just to get under the luxury tax.

(o.k., time to switch out of Hubie prose)

I guess the Nets are still an average team and are always capable of getting wins, usually coinciding with a big night from Vince Carter. Some thought that in a contract year (he can opt out of the next 2 years of his deal following this season) Vince would, uh, try. But the same questions regarding his commitment still linger, and are now accompanied with which destination he'd like to go to as a free agent. While he'd be leaving a lot of money on the table by opting out, Carter also could get another 5 or 6 year deal at comparable money, an opportunity that doesn't come often.

So will the Nets trade Carter before he's a Free Agent to 'get something' before (if) he leaves? Given the circumstances of how they got Carter in the first place, I wouldn't be surprised if they instead traded Jefferson to get a top-line frontcourt player, and going for one more run with Jason Kidd before truly blowing everything up. Hell, in their division they don't even need a strong finish, just a good squad come playoff time. However, losing Kristic may have given them too many holes to fill even with using Jefferson as the bait.

The Bulls have lost 7 straight in Jersey, and it's not that surprising given that the Nets are usually pretty good, but also that their arena is a dreary and depressing place to play. I can see it being tough to get up for a game in front of the few thousand who still come to see a team getting ready to go to Brooklyn. Not that I don't want that move to happen for the sake of the league, but it kindof makes these next couple seasons seem like a wake.

Hinrich's a game-time decision, and even if he did play the big guards of Jersey can give the Bulls fits. But I think we may be at the point where what Ben Gordon can do offensively is the more worrisome thing for the opponent in any matchup.

CSN says
Kirk will play. How much will depend on how he feels.

Go Bulls!!!

Hard to imagine a better start than this!
I just wish I could watch this one - school's back in next week, so this is the last weekend for me to enjoy the Bulls' games without feeling guilty.

by wjb1492 on Jan 5, 2007 6:53 PM CST up reply actions

Wow
16-0 to start the game - the Nets just look completely disinterested out there.

by Big D on Jan 5, 2007 6:54 PM CST reply actions

I'm listening to the radio
but i can imagine Stacy King is saying the Nets 'lack energy'

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Jan 5, 2007 6:58 PM CST up reply actions

This got ugly really fast
11 TOs, 21 fouls already.  Nets shot 27 FTs and Bulls only 7.  Du is 0 for 7, but to be fair he did take those quarter ending half court shots and he does have 5 assists.  Kirk had 4 TOs and 3 fouls in the half.

I feel kind of responsible, because I broke my personal rule against mixing fantasy and the Bulls and picked up Lu and Ben for the next couple of weeks.

by wjb1492 on Jan 5, 2007 7:53 PM CST reply actions

To be even more fairer
His indecision has brought the offense to a screeching halt a few times.

by Paxson Jackson @ Blog a Bull on Jan 5, 2007 7:55 PM CST up reply actions

LOL - I wasn't going to be fair at all
Not sure what drove me to it tonight.  I sometimes feel bad that I always seem to be criticizing Du - it's not totally his fault that he's a backup stuck in a starting role.

by wjb1492 on Jan 5, 2007 8:05 PM CST up reply actions

skiles!
Why does he keep allen and griffin in so long?

by dcarioca on Jan 5, 2007 8:33 PM CST reply actions

to his credit
they held their own while Noc and Kirk were in foul trouble. deng is my favorite bull in a long time by the way.

by Option27 on Jan 5, 2007 8:42 PM CST up reply actions

god
the nets really suck. they pretty much are hoping the bulls touch them and they get to the line. besides that, they can't score worth shit.

by Option27 on Jan 5, 2007 8:45 PM CST reply actions

It does seem to be working for them
Nets are only shooting .328 (21 of 64) right now, but have taken 36 FTs.  This kind of reminds me of last season, with the huge disparity in free throw attempts.

by wjb1492 on Jan 5, 2007 8:50 PM CST up reply actions

HOW
is that a reach on Griffin?! Jefferson was spinning INTO him!

by Option27 on Jan 5, 2007 8:56 PM CST up reply actions

I agree with Red
Scott Skiles is smok'n hot! But uh, a little more rugged than Tom Cruise.

by Paxson Jackson @ Blog a Bull on Jan 5, 2007 8:49 PM CST reply actions

So are the refs screwing us?
Or can the guys not keep their hands to themselves?  I hate not being able to watch the games!

by wjb1492 on Jan 5, 2007 8:57 PM CST reply actions

to make it short
we're playing physical but YES

by Option27 on Jan 5, 2007 9:00 PM CST up reply actions

WTF?
WHY DOES THIS KEEP HAPPENING TO US?  Why can't we protect a lead?

by dcarioca on Jan 5, 2007 9:02 PM CST reply actions

I'm with ya
But I still can't help but blame the refs somewhat.

by Option27 on Jan 5, 2007 9:05 PM CST up reply actions

I'd alwaus rather blame the refs.
They called 33 personal fouls on the guys!  But our guys also missed 11 free throws, 6 of them in the 4th.

Actually, the more I think about it, the more reasons I have to be sick over this game.  But I still hate the Nets and the refs.

by wjb1492 on Jan 5, 2007 9:11 PM CST up reply actions

pathetic
that we can't beat the nets.

by dcarioca on Jan 5, 2007 9:07 PM CST reply actions

Ugh!
That over-the-head shot Kidd makes. What a chokejob this game is.

by Grass on Jan 5, 2007 9:08 PM CST reply actions

I didn't need to see
10 seconds of Nocioni biting his fingernails.

by Paxson Jackson @ Blog a Bull on Jan 5, 2007 9:11 PM CST reply actions

Ok
i know hes clutch but stop going to gordon in these moments. too predictable

by Option27 on Jan 5, 2007 9:12 PM CST reply actions

basket interference on Wallace
that was clearly the wrong call.

Although it came off of a guard missing a layup, so I guess it was quite a fitting way to end the game.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Jan 5, 2007 9:17 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed, but
come on, Kirk was bumped by the 100 yr old, shot-blocking threat, Uncle Cliffy.

by EdNealy on Jan 5, 2007 9:46 PM CST up reply actions

First off
Kirk Hinrich OBVIOUSLY got fouled hard going to the basket, the refs didn't call it. Then Ben Wallace cleanly tipped it in and they called offensive basket interference. We got the worst of EVERY call tonight. This shit was fixed.

by Option27 on Jan 5, 2007 9:18 PM CST reply actions

Hell
Kirk fouled on the drive. Ben's tip-in waved off for offensive interference (which replay showed it clearly was NOT).
BS game....

by bleargh on Jan 5, 2007 9:19 PM CST reply actions

A miserable end
To a miserable game

by Grass on Jan 5, 2007 9:21 PM CST reply actions

yup
I'm telling you, any game in NJ just feels that way.  It's a depressing arena against a boring mediocre team. I hate when the Bulls play there.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Jan 5, 2007 9:22 PM CST up reply actions

You are so right
I hate it there. The most boring arena in basketball

by Option27 on Jan 5, 2007 9:24 PM CST up reply actions

It sounds like
you can't wait for the new owner's NYC arena to be finished.

by Paxson Jackson @ Blog a Bull on Jan 5, 2007 9:31 PM CST up reply actions

guards
Kirk 3-9
Gordon 7-17 (0 FTA!)
Duhon 0-9

And Sefo made several mistakes in his few possesions which ensured we'd see a lot of A-drain. So I can't help but put some blame on him too.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Jan 5, 2007 9:21 PM CST reply actions

Your favorite Bull is in a slump
Du is 3 of 25 over the last 3 games, 0 for 13 from 3 point range.

Can we
send this whole game tape to Stu Jackson and hope some action is taken against these refs?

by Option27 on Jan 5, 2007 9:29 PM CST reply actions

True
The editing would be pretty much taking out the shot of Noce biting his nails, though he puts a human face on the stinking pile of bullshit calls.
Deng, he's good!!!!!!!!!

by cubbybear on Jan 6, 2007 2:46 PM CST up reply actions

Hopefully
they will play better tomorrow night.
Thabo....the accent is sweet!!

by sue369 on Jan 5, 2007 9:31 PM CST reply actions

11 Seconds...
Have your guards go 10-35, blow an 18 point lead, miss 5 free throws in the last couple of minutes (good to see that Wallace broke his 0-11 streak though), watch Kidd's over the head shot and get jobbed on offensive goal tending. While the Bulls lost this game in many ways, how about trying to tie the game on their last possession as opposed to running the clock down to 5 seconds and going for 2?

by EdNealy on Jan 5, 2007 9:37 PM CST reply actions

how can we be an elite team
when we look clueless on a simple 2-3 zone?!!?!? AND we look terrible on the road!  EXECUTE ON BOTH ENDS PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!

by babybulls on Jan 5, 2007 9:54 PM CST reply actions

not all Refs fault
how many unforced turnovers did Bulls commit?  Its like 2nd and 3rd qrts they were trying to lose the game with how many horrible passes they threw away.

They had chances but have to get scoring out of someone other then Deng, and Bulls small guards got killed on D at end of game vs Kidd/Carter.

by NY Chicago Fan on Jan 5, 2007 9:56 PM CST reply actions

I dont understand it...
I really dont... How do we blow HUGE leads in two games...
Well... I live in NJ... was going to the Swamp to watch the game, but got stuck in NY till 9.. Good thing I missed it... And watching it on TV, with replays is not cool... And yes, Fuck Posey!

by Goostafer on Jan 5, 2007 10:05 PM CST reply actions

maybe
the Bulls let Nets win in effort to ensure the Knicks don't win the horrible Atlantic division

by NY Chicago Fan on Jan 5, 2007 10:38 PM CST reply actions

We still haven't beaten a decent team on the road
Until we do that, let's cool it with the Finals talk.

by Big D on Jan 5, 2007 11:31 PM CST reply actions

Wouldn't have mattered
...because based on what I saw tonight, the Nets aren't a decent team, anyway.

Some thoughts
I have to think that being repeatedly posted by Kidd did something to Gordon's psyche tonight.  He came back into the game and immediately:  Rushed a shot; Failed to guard a screen and roll correctly; Gave up an unforgivable turnover; Disappeared completely.  I hope this doesn't put him in some kind of funk/slump/whatever, because it was clear that when he came back in the game he was not ready to play.

Vince Carter is the wimpiest bitch of a wimp in the NBA today.

Comcast is still killing me.  I counted three times when they were filming Lawrence Frank in lieu of relevant game action.  That doesn't count all the other portions of plays they missed (I'm guessing roughly 15-20).  They never show replays, either.  I deal with this OK when the Bulls are playing well, but when they're blowing leads, it's like a hammer to my nuts.

Turnovers killed us.  Again.

Refs screwed us a number of times tonight, but the foul on Griff when he CLEARLY had a clean steal changed the whole game.  The next play was Carter's monster dunk.  That got the crowd into it and changed the whole complexion of the game.  I'm not going to say the refs cost us the game, but they didn't help, either.  Second most egregious bad call was when Wallace intentionally avoided contact with Mikki Moore, and they still called the foul.

I couldn't believe the offensive interference call.  Most egregious call I've seen since...jeez, I can't even remember for sure.  In real time, it was obvious that the ball was well off the rim and outside of the circle.  That's especially ridiculous because one of the other refs could easily have corrected the call, or the guy could have said that he changed his mind without any impact to the game.  It's not like a foul call or something where the action stops.  It was stopped anyway.  OK, since Hue Hollins cost the Bulls their 10th loss of the season in '96 when Jordan blocked Reggie Miller's three-point attempt as cleanly as someone can block someone.  Also cost the Bulls the best all-time home record.  Yes, that Hue Hollins.

Also, I've been drinking so if I sound like a crazy man, blame Sir Alec Guinness (or Saint James Gate or whoever came up with the wonderful stuff).

Deng 4 MVP, 2008!

Just before
that horrible offensive goal tending call the refs should have called the foul Kirk received going in for the layup. It was awful officiating last night.
