Game Thread #33: Bulls at New Jersey Nets
What to do if you're the New Jersey Nets?
Your big three is getting old (Kidd), hobbled (Jefferson) or indifferent (Carter). Your post scorer is out for the season, meaning that the worst offensive starter in the NBA is getting even more playing time. You know your coach is likely a good one, but nevertheless seems to be on the verge of having his team quit on him (and if it hadn't been cemented already, Jason Kidd would then be officially 'coach killer of the last 2 decades'). And are pretty much in cap hell, dealing away one of your few trading chips (the expiring contract of Jeff McInnis) for pretty much nobody just to get under the luxury tax.
(o.k., time to switch out of Hubie prose)
I guess the Nets are still an average team and are always capable of getting wins, usually coinciding with a big night from Vince Carter. Some thought that in a contract year (he can opt out of the next 2 years of his deal following this season) Vince would, uh, try. But the same questions regarding his commitment still linger, and are now accompanied with which destination he'd like to go to as a free agent. While he'd be leaving a lot of money on the table by opting out, Carter also could get another 5 or 6 year deal at comparable money, an opportunity that doesn't come often.
So will the Nets trade Carter before he's a Free Agent to 'get something' before (if) he leaves? Given the circumstances of how they got Carter in the first place, I wouldn't be surprised if they instead traded Jefferson to get a top-line frontcourt player, and going for one more run with Jason Kidd before truly blowing everything up. Hell, in their division they don't even need a strong finish, just a good squad come playoff time. However, losing Kristic may have given them too many holes to fill even with using Jefferson as the bait.
The Bulls have lost 7 straight in Jersey, and it's not that surprising given that the Nets are usually pretty good, but also that their arena is a dreary and depressing place to play. I can see it being tough to get up for a game in front of the few thousand who still come to see a team getting ready to go to Brooklyn. Not that I don't want that move to happen for the sake of the league, but it kindof makes these next couple seasons seem like a wake.
Hinrich's a game-time decision, and even if he did play the big guards of Jersey can give the Bulls fits. But I think we may be at the point where what Ben Gordon can do offensively is the more worrisome thing for the opponent in any matchup.

This got ugly really fast
I feel kind of responsible, because I broke my personal rule against mixing fantasy and the Bulls and picked up Lu and Ben for the next couple of weeks.
To be even more fairer

So are the refs screwing us?
WTF?
I'd alwaus rather blame the refs.
Actually, the more I think about it, the more reasons I have to be sick over this game. But I still hate the Nets and the refs.
Ugh!

basket interference on Wallace
Although it came off of a guard missing a layup, so I guess it was quite a fitting way to end the game.

guards
Gordon 7-17 (0 FTA!)
Duhon 0-9
And Sefo made several mistakes in his few possesions which ensured we'd see a lot of A-drain. So I can't help but put some blame on him too.

11 Seconds...
how can we be an elite team
not all Refs fault
They had chances but have to get scoring out of someone other then Deng, and Bulls small guards got killed on D at end of game vs Kidd/Carter.
I dont understand it...
Well... I live in NJ... was going to the Swamp to watch the game, but got stuck in NY till 9.. Good thing I missed it... And watching it on TV, with replays is not cool... And yes, Fuck Posey!
maybe
We still haven't beaten a decent team on the road
Wouldn't have mattered

Some thoughts
Vince Carter is the wimpiest bitch of a wimp in the NBA today.
Comcast is still killing me. I counted three times when they were filming Lawrence Frank in lieu of relevant game action. That doesn't count all the other portions of plays they missed (I'm guessing roughly 15-20). They never show replays, either. I deal with this OK when the Bulls are playing well, but when they're blowing leads, it's like a hammer to my nuts.
Turnovers killed us. Again.
Refs screwed us a number of times tonight, but the foul on Griff when he CLEARLY had a clean steal changed the whole game. The next play was Carter's monster dunk. That got the crowd into it and changed the whole complexion of the game. I'm not going to say the refs cost us the game, but they didn't help, either. Second most egregious bad call was when Wallace intentionally avoided contact with Mikki Moore, and they still called the foul.
I couldn't believe the offensive interference call. Most egregious call I've seen since...jeez, I can't even remember for sure. In real time, it was obvious that the ball was well off the rim and outside of the circle. That's especially ridiculous because one of the other refs could easily have corrected the call, or the guy could have said that he changed his mind without any impact to the game. It's not like a foul call or something where the action stops. It was stopped anyway. OK, since Hue Hollins cost the Bulls their 10th loss of the season in '96 when Jordan blocked Reggie Miller's three-point attempt as cleanly as someone can block someone. Also cost the Bulls the best all-time home record. Yes, that Hue Hollins.
Also, I've been drinking so if I sound like a crazy man, blame Sir Alec Guinness (or Saint James Gate or whoever came up with the wonderful stuff).
