SI's Mannix Picks Bulls as Champs

(From the diaries. I'll just take this opportunity to say I saw Chris Mannix leave his pharmacist earlier this week with a Costco-like load of pill bottles. That may or may not cause you to temper your enthusiasm for his prediction. -TZ)

Bullish on Bulls

It's nice to see the Bulls get national recognition, as well they should with the moves they made this off-season and the draft they had. But I wish they could fly under the radar one more season just so the press doesn't go to their heads.

Oh, I forgot, ballers don't read the papers. But they do read the intraweb doohickey, so says joejoe and his converse with Ben Gordon!

Wow.
I still think they're a year away.  But damn, it sure felt great reading an article picking the Bulls to win the title.  It's been a long time since we've gotten that opportunity.

Interesting that he doesn't mention Ben Gordon once in his article.  Most people think of him first when it comes to potential talent on the Bulls.

Normally this time of year, I'm all about Michigan football (and I certainly am, particularly after last weekend).  But despite my excitement on that front, I am more excited about the Bulls season than I have been in as long as I can remember ('95/96 at least).  Halloween can't come soon enough!

Did you
go to the second page?  BG is mentioned there.

Whoops
I'm a dummy.  I went to the second page, but I somehow skipped that paragraph.  Should have been in bed at that hour...

I'm pretty sure it won't go to their heads
Skiles wouldn't let that happen.  Although if we do win, maybe he'll finally smile.

Being picked this early is a huge jinx.  Just ask Carolina and Miami what it's like to be picked to win the Super Bowl before the season even starts.

But then again, I don't believe in jinxes :)

noteworthy
is the little nugget on Luol "working" on his three.  It would be nice to see more range out of Deng.
The biggest, and most curious, omission is Thabo.  You'd think somebody would do their homework before making a pick (tongue in cheek).  Seriously though, how could Mannix whiff on that.  He devotes time to relieving Kirk's pressure and, presumably, Thabo presents the best option for doing just that.
Still, it's not a bad thing to have some national press on your band wagon.

Ummmm...
Mannix isn't really the most respected online NBA writer. I would suggest ignoring his anti-NBA NBA writing.
Will the Ginobili/Nocioni era ever be over?

Let's be fair though...
It's not like Sam Rubenstein is the most highly regarded writer, either.

by paxson43 on Sep 21, 2006 9:39 AM CDT up reply actions

Edit
Evidently Sam is a well respected basketball journalist as this video shows.

I also happen to be a big Sam fan... just didn't think it was fair to use his opinion as a proof point on Mannix's credibility.  I'm rambling...

If it's about the Bulls,
and it isn't written by Jay Mariotti, I'm linking it or posting it.

Sure about that?
Sounds like his "dooming" of Team USA was right on the money.

by Big D on Sep 21, 2006 11:16 AM CDT up reply actions

What's
with the Mannix apologists? He intimated Team USA would play poorly and lose to Argentina, which never happened. That's hardly "right on the money."

I'm not allowed to point out a predictor of a Bulls championship doesn't have a history of accurate predictions? It seems like a pretty fair comment to me.

Sorry, S(t)uperfans.

Team USA
No, they played poorly and lost to Greece.  He barely mentioned Argentina except for a few sentences at the end.  The point of the article was that Team USA wouldn't win the gold medal.  You disagreed, and accused him of "jumping on the Chris Sheridan bandwagon."  He and Sheridan were right, and you were wrong.

knicks
The Knicks $145 million payroll, over two and a half times the salary cap, means they are winning the championship, right?  ;)

typo
the actual payroll number is $140,595,134.00

What's this guy smoking?
I'm as big a Bulls fan as anyone I know, and I am not picking them to win it all next year.

I hope this guy turns out to be a genius, but that just sounded like an awfully rosy view of things.

While I
don't believe they will win the Championship next year I do expect great things from them. I am really excited for the season to start.

Disappointed Bulls Lose in 2nd Round

by Chris Mannix, SI.com

Despite winning eleven more games in the reagular season than the 2005-06 Bulls, the 2006-07 Bulls team must consider losing in the second round of the playoffs to the defending champion Heat to be a disppointment for a team that was touted to be a contender to win the NBA Championship before the season started.

Remember that last year's Bulls team also was eliminated in a six game series against the Heat, so, really, what kind of progress has been made at the enormous cost of signing 32-year-old center Ben Wallace to a deal that runs for another three years and $45 million more?

and so on and so forth...

by Hoopinion on Sep 21, 2006 1:25 PM CDT reply actions

It would be better if
I could type "regular" correctly. I'm not trying to imply that Chris Mannix's spelling and grammar are anything other than professional.
