Summer League Wrapup

[From the Diaries. Big thanks to sbulls9030, as I didn't follow the summer league much this year. Thanks for picking up the slack, this is good stuff. -Matt]

I watched all five summer leagues games.  It was crazy to watch all five, but it is the only Bulls action until preseason and I wanted to get a look at Thabo and Tyrus to see with my own eyes how accurate the scouting reports were.

Statistics for the 5 games: http://www.nba.com/media/magic/06slstats_bulls.pdf

Thabo played only 2 games due to a hip flexor, but he was impressive in those two games.  Thabo played particulary well in the specfic ways the Bulls need him to contribute.  On defense he created turnovers and defended well.  On offense he showed enough handle and court awareness to play the 1 alongside Gordon.  Finally, he showed the athletic ability to finish at the hoop in transition or in the half court.  He finished at the rim with either hand and knocked down his jumpers when he was set or moving to to his left off 1 or 2 dribbles.  His major flaw was making to many passes on the interior that would not work in the NBA.  Just the thought of Tyson fumbling Thabo's feeds the way Luke S. did makes me feel better about the trade. Overall, he looked ready to contribute in his defined role.

After watching Tyrus play five games some of the negative comparisons that were made to Tyson Chandler stood out.  They stood out because Ty2 may actually be a version of what Ty1 was supposed to be. An explosive 4 with the ability to impact the game on defense and face up on offense with a mid-range jumpshot and the ability to slash to the basket.  I think the best comparison is probably Antonio McDyess before the injuries.  McDyess coming into the league was very similar to Tyrus in size, ability, and background.

The most surprising thing he showed was his passing ability.  Particularly late in the week, he made some really nice passes.  He struggled with turnovers, but by the end of the week he was much better.  He made his jumpshot consistently with his momentum taking him toward the basket.  He could make pullup jumpers off the dribble, even going glass at times.  His turnaround jumper was awful, he managed to get it blocked several times.  If you eliminate the bad jump shots then shooting % whould have been decent.  Whenever he tried to fade away, he missed often badly.  When he took jump shots like a 4 he was successful, he really struggled when he tried to play like McGrady.

He could drive and force fouls consistently and finish even with contact.  He always tried to drive left and then spin back to his right if he met resistance.  I never saw him drive right to the basket any of the five games.  He's uses alot of effort and isn't always under control on his drives.  He tried several jump hooks and other post moves unsucessfully, and didn't show any touch with those shots.  His most effective post move was spinning hard right and going for the dunk, which worked several times.

On defense, he was active and made some fantastic blocks from the weak side.  He also made alot of fantastic goal tends.  His rebounding was solid, but not dominate.  In a couple games, he made a poor decisions on when to double team.  He'll have to become better at understanding defensive assignments.

Summary:
Thabo appeared ready to meet the team's expectations, particuarly because of the poise he played with right from the start of the 1st game.  All he has to do is defend, run the floor, and take what's given to him offensively as the 4th or 5th option on the floor.

Tyrus showed the skills necessary to contribute and earn minutes.  If he is willing to play within his abilities then he is going to earn PT.  I doubt Tyrus will ever be a superstar small forward, that some people have projected him as.  At this point, players are either fluid offensively and have the necessary shooting touch or they don't.  Tyrus doesn't have it, but he can be an all-star level player just by being what Tyson Chandler was supposed to be or what McDyess was.  For this year, he apparently just has to be as good as Darius Songaila.

good
that's good to hear.  I was afraid Tyrus was going to be another Tyson.

Tyrus can really shoot
I thought he really showed nice touch with his jumpshot, and he's more fluid athletically than Ty1 ever was.

Agreed!!!
Finally! Someone realizes Tyrus Thomas isn't Tyson Chandler.

Agree
I agree with your position on both these players.  Thabo - all I can say is good job Paxon he looks like a steal and should contribute right away.

Tyrus seems to be trying to do too much.  I would be happy to never see him take another fade away.  He definately liked to go to the left on his drives, but in the NBA he is not going to be given the baseline all day.

I did like his playmaking.  He set his teamates up a couple times with nice passes off his drive.   I cannot ever seem him becoming a first or second option on the offensive end because I didn't see too much touch.  He sure is skinny and is going to get banged a little early, but if he plays at the same time as Noce and Wallace in the front court their muscle will offset his skinny butt.

I like the comparison to T1 pre-NBA, but I think his game might resemble more of early Shawn Marion than early McDyess.

Chandler
wasnt that bad of a shooter when he first entered the NBA and got worse over time. Though that was the result IMO of him not making adjustments from HS to the NBA. Tyrus seems to be a hard worker and I think will make those adjustments. Also McDyess was the 2nd pick also in the 95 draft.

Yeah, fo sho
I remember all those 30 point 12 for 15 games Tyson used to have.

There was ONE game...
...and to this day, I don't understand how Tyson scored 32 points against a Sheed/Dale Davis/Zach Randolph front court.  After watching him for 5 years, this is actually more impressive then Wilt scoring 100 or Kobe going for 81.
In Pax we Trust!

by Jobu on Jul 14, 2006 11:13 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It was 27...
Jalen "Maximum Player" Rose threw down 32, but 27(9-10 FT!!!) and 18 from the Chand Man at least tops Kobe's 81. Although you have to compare how badly the Blazers wanted to get out of the UC and get into whatever wild shit they were doing on New Year's Eve, and the Raptor's complete apathy on defense last year. It's a tough one.

And don't forget about Sabonis from that Portland frontcourt. Arvydas was awesome.

Well Brandon Roy had a great summer league
I think Thabo (NBA ready.. on par with Nocini) is a good player, Brandon Roy (NBA ready) probably will be a All Star.  In Paxs we trust, yet I'd take Roy and Thabo, even-tho they both play same positions 1,2 & 3.  Ty2 is a project, he has the desire to be ranked with in the top players in this league, but the experience and talent is not there for this 19 year old, yet?. The NBA is a man's league, you better have somethings before you get out on the floor.  Very few develop it later.  Sure, many develop/improve jump shot (Jordan, Hinrich, K. Bryant, etc), but theses guys already had a decent shot.    Ty1 completely abandon any attempt at a post move, or face the basket move last year, yet earlier in his career he tried, with limited success.

Let's hope Ty2 drive and desire never settles until he achieves All Star status in particular areas of his game, yet, his "game" does not have an identity.  His "game" better have an identity with-in 2 years!  I think the upside/project player in the NBA is to risky, and no worth it, ever.    Lebron James came out of H.S. 2003, and no one consider him as an NBA project.  But said he had to just get experience and get use to the NBA game.

Your game better have an identity...
or not. Shawn Marion has had a great career based on being a good player with no defined role. Andrei Kirilenko has had similar success without a distinct indentity to his game. Tyrus Thomas will play like Tyrus Thomas, and that isn't a problem.

Every draft pick NBA teams make is based on a player's potential for success in the NBA (I am including every draft pick ever, except Ronaldo Balkman, who cannot be rationally explained). I understand what you mean about a project, but Tyrus Thomas did play college ball. He doesn't look entirely comfortable on the court, and isn't a great shooter, but that is true of most rookies. Thomas isn't a project like Tyson Chandler, Eddy Curry, Josh Smith, or even Yao Ming. A year, or even half a season in the NBA, and Thomas will be an improved player, not to say that there is anything wrong with him now.

thomas
he is a project. as much of a project as most those guys you have mentioned, except he has a better drive work ethic.  I doubt thomas will be able to score inside much.  He doesnt have that much control of the ball when he drives and he needs weight to finish underneath.  Most of his points, which wont be many, will come off of open jump shots, puts backs, or best of all backdoor alleyoops....i cant wait for those because he can catch the ball unlike chandler. His first year he wont stand out defensively but he should get smarter with time and become a big time defensive player.  As for his offense, it will take him time to score in the post because he needs to gain weight and develop some moves...two things that are easier said than done.
Maybe he will get his points by driving to the hoop but he doesnt seem to have great control.  We'll just have to see.  I am very neutral about Thomas.  I doubt he will be an important part of the team this year.  My predictions: 8-10 points a game 4-5 rebounds and 1 block in about 20-25 minutes a game.

Thabo on the other hand will make an immediate impact.  In fact, I predict hes going to eat up either gordon or duhons number and eventually cause one of them to be traded.

10, 5 & 1
If he could avg those, while not getting burned on defense, we would be sooo good.

I think asking 25 mins is a bit much...im thinking 15 - 20 mins a game....assuming wedont trade anyone we got noc, deng, khryapa, brown, sweets, allan, big ben, schenser, smith  who could all play either the 3 and/or 4

Ty2
can contribute 10 points a game by simply finishing the weak-side pick and roll that Ty1 always bumbled off his feet.  And, by "contribute" I mean either he or Kirk scores on the play.
Plus, he'll land a couple of open jumpers a game.
I was impressed by Ty2 in the summerleague, although I did not expect much out of him given his age.  I think 10-5-1 is a definite possibility for the first year.  If he does that in 15-20 minutes, then he'll be a steal.

summer league
I'm already smitten with Ty2, just his activity level and, can I say, "Freakish" leaping ability reminded me of an (even) young(er) Amare Stoudamire.  but what's the over/under on Ty2 taking one of those  fade away jumpers, followed by Skiles racing across the court and just popping him in the jaw?

btw...great post, and if you wanna check out summer league highlights go here: http://youtube.com/results?related=yourchicagobulls.com

Amare
I don't think Amare Stoudamire was ever this skinny.

the great thing about this years team...
....is the Bulls have depth and I think Skiles is going to keep his guys fresh all year long.
