For some reason the Blazers don't have "bird rights" on Przybilla, and can only offer up to their mid-level exemption (since they're over the cap). In fact they may only be able to sign him by using their mid-level exemption, so I doubt they'd want to use that on a sign/trade...or if it's even possible for that matter.

Any help?

Not exactly a confirmation, but it seems right:

The center is now an unrestricted free agent. Because he has not spent at least three seasons with the Blazers, the team does not hold his Bird Rights. That is, they cannot exceed the salary cap to re-sign him. Since Portland is already over the cap as is, they, like most other teams, only have the midlevel exception to offer Przybilla. Unlike what they initially feared, that just might be enough to bring him back.

They have another issue

They've got 13 players under contract for next year already. They've got to shed a couple of those players, I think.

It's too bad for them the Miles to NY trade didn't go over (supposedly Paul Allen vetoed it - the idiot), but it may end up being good for us.

The beat reporter is doing a q and a chat session at 3 our time and is going to talk about what Patterson is doing.

And Matt, John could have been giving Patterson the reasons why Jim should have his number retired by the Blazers. :)

I need convincing

I'm sensing some serious man-love for Pryzbilla. I'm not feeling it. What am I missing? Do you guys all think that he's worth $5 mil/year? $7 mil/year?

I can only look at stats b/c I haven't seen many Blazers' games. I realize they don't tell the whole story. But it sort of seems like he's Tyson's long lost white brother, and not someone that compliments him like Curry did. Their Hollinger Stats are almsot identical.

I agree he's not a good compliment for Tyson, although defensively he could take the bigger centers that Tyson struggles with. It's not like they are going to be on the court always at the same time.

I'd prefer Nene personally, or Nazr Mohammed. Also this drives home why I want them to draft Aldridge, someone needs to score down there :).

the passion of the "pryz"

stats don't really bear out what makes a player like przy valuable to the bulls. aside from blocks, he doesn't offer a lot (some offense and pretty good rebounding). What he does offer is height and size, a good work ethic and better than average skills. Unfortunately, for us, those commodities in somebody over 6'10'' result in top-dollar bidding. While he wouldn't give us much offense (though more than Ty), he would do several important things. First of all, he'd be the second, and much-needed, piece of our front-court defensive puzzle. Aside from Tyson, we have nothing there. Secondly, he'd likely extend Tyson's 'peak' by two or three seasons. If tyson keeps banging, it's gonna wear him down. Third, he and Nazr are the only free-agent bigs that are not restricted, want to come to chicago and have many years left. Fourth, he definitely fits the Skiles mold of team first players with solid work ethics (this can NOT be understated when it comes to Paxson's plan). Finally, and most critically, he allows us to move Tyson back primarily to the four. It seems to me that most of the tyson-was-out-of-shape talk this year was a smokescreen for tyson's-out-of-position. Though he's seven foot, he is not center material. He's WAY too light to keep traditional bigs from backing him down. It's players like Bosh and Nowitzki that Ty's better suited for. If we get a traditional big that is semi-competent and can occupy the opponent's five, you'll see tyson's productivity go up substantially.
however, i say all of this knowing that whatever big we get this summer is going to be overpaid in dalembert-esque fashion. it's just the nature of the NBA these days. Personally, i prefer the "pryz" because we know what we're getting. I don't feel the same can be said of any other big (Nene, Nazr, Magloire or, even, big ben).

Fills a need

I think he does fill a need. He is very similar to Chandler although from the little I've seen, he definitely has a more developed offensive game. Not tremendously developed by any stretch, but he will occasionally shoot the ball.

Mainly, though, I see him and Chandler sharing alot of minutes at the 1. If there are 48 minutes in a game and Przy gets 30 at C, and Chandler the other 18, that leaves 12 min/game with them both on the floor. The rest of the time, we have a PF who can score a little (name your guy).

I like Nene the best, assuming he's healed up, but he's a risk b/c he's restricted. I'm of 2 minds on Nazzy. Living in NY, I've seen a lot of mediocre play from him. But he seemed pretty solid in SA. I'm not sure who the real Nazr is.

What about Magloire? He was an all-star at one point. He had a down year last year and the Bucks aren't going to keep him. He might be a possiblity too.

Is that realistic?

Do you think that Tyson could be deomoted to 18 mins/game? That's what Sweetney got this year. No way Pax would have signed him to that deal last summer if he EVER thought that was a possibility.

I'm with you on Nazr. Which one would the Bulls get? What would it be like for him in his hometown?

Magliore also confuses/intrigues me. First, I think it would be tough for the Bucks to trade him within the division. It happens, but it's rare. It also seems like a lot is made about his Toronto roots. He's a FA next summer and you've got to think that the Raptors will make a strong push for him since he, unlike so many other players, wants to play there. Other then that, he does have a cool purple-ly website

I was just approximating Przy at 30/gm at center
Chandler 18/gm at center 12/gm at PF

Total random estimation for 30 min/gm for each guy, allowing PF minutes for Noc and LA/TT/MS/DS/MA or whoever.

It could be 38 at C for Przy and 10/20 for Tyson.

Tyson doesn't really seem to be able to stay on the court for much more than 30 min/game.

Need

I see what you're saying. While one of the big needs of the offseason is to get an offensive-minded post player, its probably just as important to get a player to 'save' Tyson on defense. Kindof like getting the big guard to keep Hinrich from guarding the 2.

Ideally there would be a big available who could do both, but Przybilla does fill one of those needs which isn't bad at the right price.

He's also injury prone, which is definately a concern.

..his name is a Zach Randolph. I started driving this bus back in March. Out of all the "attainable" PFs in the league, he compliments Tyson almost to a "T." Let me reiterate, he's a legit 20-10, outstanding scorer in the post, a Midwesterner, and he's only freaking 24 years old!!!! Yes, is a distinct possibility that he's a headcase and that's not the type of player the Bulls want. HOWEVER, maybe Skiles and Pax think that they can get him and the old "change of scenery" thing will work.

Trading down

It would kinda make sense. Pax deals the #2 pick and a few contracts (Sweetney, etc. ) to Portland get the #4 pick (Roy) and Randolph (the "seasoned" post player the Bulls need).

I might do that if I was Pax, Zach's headcase potential aside.

Zach had a little run in with the law in Portland last night - as a passenger in a car that was racing another car. and he had weapons in the car (he has a permit) and the police suspect he was under the influence of the dreaded weed. I don't get the guns (permit or not). I'm all for gun rights, but it doesn't make sense for HIM to have a gun. If you need 'protection' that bad on the mean streets of Portland, have one of your hangers-on be the guy with the gun.

Randolph is a certified nut, I don't think he's much safer of a risk than Ron Artest. Both very hard workers (at least he was in his early years) but just seems like there's a screw loose.

Maybe him and Skiles know the secret Michigan St. handshake (it probably involves shotgunning a can of Natty Light) and can bond?

What if the Nugs and Pax weren't talking about Chandler for K-Mart (which is disgusting), but were talking about Chandler for NENE in a sign and trade for roughly Chandler money?

Now imagine you sign Przy. Then you take Roy with the 2nd pick, and pick up a project big at 16, OR you take your big at 2 and your 2 guard at 16?

That gives you the following options:

Przy, M. Allen
Nene, TT/LA/AB, Sweets
Noc, Deng
Gordon, Sefolosha/Collins/Brewer

I'd be surprised

if they traded Tyson. His value could get no lower right now and, he was a pretty valuable player in the '04-'05 season. Put into a position to succeed, he could become a critical player for us. Few players in the league can affect a game only from the defensive end. I'm not big on the idea of trading him.
As for sign and trade, my mistake on mentioning that with portland. Seeing as they can't sign Przy for more than 5 mill, we can't really swing a deal like that.

Pryz trade

The way the cap works we have to use it up before we can use the mid level exemption. We also can not combine the two.

The only conceiveable way we would do a sign and trade with Portland for Przbilla would be because we had already used up our cap room on a star player (Garnett for instance) and wanted to save our mid level on someone else. Then we could trade players to match salaries.

do a sign and trade for Pryzbilla? There's no sense to it right now. To give away an expiring contract? Not when we have the cap room anyways. To pick up a contract expiring next year? Pax was probably making the rounds with GMs, or he's looking for a trade down scenario.

Chandler

I also don't see the Bulls trading Chandler.

Am I the only one who noticed how weak our interior defense was when Chandler was on the bench. I admit Chandler had a poor season offensively but he did the job defensively when he stayed out of foul trouble. He may never be worth $10 Mil/year but he's a valuable player who wants to be good. I will be very disappointed if he doesn't improve both his points and rebound numbers next year.

I think he will (he SHOULD) have a better year next year, one because I think he was sort of shamed this year and two because we will hopefully get him some help and some more time at the 4.

I was just going off the rumor of Pax talking to the Nuggets and that TC/K-Mart rumor. If TC is going to Denver, I'd much rather see Nene show up in Chicago.

I really want to like Chandler. He was just really frustrating last year with his fouls and ZIP on offense. In theory, a Prz/Nene frontline would provide an interior defensive presence.

That said, I'd prefer to see Chandler stick around, work hard all summer, and come back a more effective player.

"It is really believed that Paxson was counting the number of teams dumb enough to have traded for Loy Vaught. Or that he might be trading down for Randy Foye. Paxson also is known to enjoy counting the different ways soy can be used in the Midwest. That Paxson can be coy."
