Around SBN: Newcastle Battle Injury Woes Ahead of Tottenham

Brandon Roy

Strengths: Roy is a no nonsense 2-guard with excellent all around skills ... Very cerebral player, makes excellent decisions. Understands the game ... Very polished, great experience with four years at Washington under his belt ... An excellent shooter who steps up in big situations. Hit a number of huge shots at the end of games this year ... Has worked hard on his outside shot which has improved each year ... Great competitor ... Excellent ball handler with the ability to create shots for himself and others ... His midrange game is relatively impressive and his range has really improved this year ... Really stepped up in his senior year assuming a leadership role and taking over as the go to player for the Huskies ... Has spent time at the point guard position this year, and played admirably ... Not afraid to take the ball inside. Utilizes the spin move in the paint well ... Good free throw shooter at 81% ... Has great composure and confidence. Never gets rattled ... Good one on one skills with the ability to shoot off the dribble and get by his man to the basket ...

Weaknesses: Does everything very well but nothing out of this world ... On the small side. Lacks tremendous size and length at just 6-5 and average wing span ... A good athlete, but nothing extraordinary. Not a great leaper or thunderous dunker ... Lacks great body strength. His body is solid but not overpowering ... Foot speed and quickness is strong but wont stand out on the next level ... Defensively he is just average giving solid effort, but lacks the foot speed to be a lock down defender ...

Notes: Was named 2005-06 Pac-Ten Player of the year.

I might just use the Bulls number one pick on Brandon Roy. Get a big with the 2nd pick and then 2 free agents maybe Przybilla and Harrington. If you don't know anything of Tyrus Thomas check this out. http://tinyurl.com/mfofu

Hassan Adams
I don't think Roy is worthy of a top five pick, especially for us. We need a big guy. Thomas and Aldridge should be our priorities.  A guy we should consider is Hassan Adams.  At 6'4 he is projected as a SF.  This guy is an athletic freak.   His solid D will alleviate any defensive pressure in the backcourt. He can jump over big men to get rebounds.  can penetrate and jump outside the gym.  definitely one of the most explosive dunkers in basketball.  He plays with heart and would provide an offensive spark for sure. Good jumper.  People are sleeping on this guy.  Questions of character are unfounded, he plays hard and would fit in great with this team.  We should take him with the #16 pick.

Roy is a good choice.
I think that Roy would definitely be a good choice, anywhere from 3 to 5.  He is a draft sleeper, who will definitely be the surprise that Dwayne Wade was to people who didn't keep up with College Hoops.  Roy at 3 is what it will be...that rhymes!  Big men in the draft scare me, unless they are sure things like Duncan or KG.  This year's draft doesn't have a clear-cut dominant (instant impact) player.  I like Roy to compliment the team.  Get big through free agency (Wallace, B., Radmonovic, Mohammed, or Pryzbilla).  Bonzi Wells is also a free agent, how does that sound?

Nice consolation prize
If the Bulls happen to fare poorly in the lottery, it's nice to know Roy SHOULD be available to them at the #5 pick.  If the Bulls get the #1 they will probably take Thomas...they may get Aldridge at #2 or 3, if they end up picking 4 or 5, they'll probably end up choosing between Bargnani or Roy.  Bargnani will be the third choice if they think he will turn into an above average big...they won't get many chances to get one of those.

I dont't think they'd have interest in Morrison, because of depth at the SF position, and anyone having interest in him that picks in front of the Bulls is a good thing, because it pushes one of the guys they want down.  So, as long as someone takes Morrison, the Bulls will AT LEAST get Roy at #5, which ain't all that bad.

After watching that video, though, I'm really hoping for the #1 pick.

#2 is the sweet spot in this draft
Least amount of pressure because #1 makes the choice between Thomas and Aldridge.

Top 4 picks look like-- Thomas, Aldridge, Morrison, Bargnani...

If we're at #5 and likely have to choose between Roy and Gay--I'd take Gay.  He is too talented to pass up.  Roy is up this high because this draft's talent pool is shallow.  Gay would be your big value pick at #5, even if we are stocked with SFs.  He'd have less pressure to become a star on the Bulls and would probably come off the bench?

Please not Gay
I'm not a fan.  His well documented "coasting" all year is not something this Bulls team needs. This Bulls team isn't for underachievers.  IMO - Gay becomes a "value pick" at #16 - not in the Top 5.

I just can't see Pax, or most GMs for that matter, using a top 5 pick to address depth at thier deepest position. It would be like the 2002 Draft  when the Clips took Chris Wilcox and Melvin Ely, despite the fact that their franchise player, Brand, played the same position.  Sure enough, 4 years later neither of those guys are on the team.

Great teams that land Top 5 picks through trades (like the Pistons in 2003) can gamble with that pick or simply address depth.  The Bulls aren't quite there yet and so, like most lottery teams, have a serious hole in thier lineups that they hope to fill.

In Pax We Trust!
