Game Thread #11: Bulls at Denver Nuggets
Whither J.R. Smith?
Not fully buying today's hype that the Bulls let one get away when they dealt the then newly-acquired Smith to Denver in the offseason. He has started off well, shooting 37% on three-pointers and averaging 14 points in 27 minutes a night. He's still very young and an amazing athlete.
But I still seriously doubt such early success would've happened here, as his reputedly-poor defensive effort would've kept him off the court. I won't get into the guy's 'makeup', since it's hard to glean such things merely off of reports (and those who've feuded with Byron Scott isn't exactly a select club), but the immediate trade indicates he wasn't "the Bulls type of player": someone who wants to get better and is willing to work in practice to do so. My only problem was that they didn't even get him into camp to find out for sure, but (apparently) time was of the essence to get under the cap to sign Adrian Griffin. While Griffin isn't much in terms of production, the coaching staff felt for a deep bench role he was the better fit. Tough to argue that, for while I'm usually a cheerleader for talent-over-intangibles, when you're talking bench players it becomes more important to have those intangibles when the game-minutes will be sparse.
So add J.R. Smith to the list of guys bemoaned as one 'the Bulls let go'. Will it turn out to be a mistake? Maybe, but like Jamal Crawford or Tim Thomas, even considering success elsewhere Smith was likely not going to fit in Chicago. Now, If it's a mistake that the coaching and personnel staff overvalue such things as practice habits and willingness to improve to the point where it keeps them from being a better team, then that will be called out in time. But so far, in a big-picture sense, I think their 'standards' have worked. Whether J.R. Smith drops 25 tonight (while the Bulls shoot 30%) or not will have little meaning on that bigger question.
On to the rest of the Nuggets, who I'd describe overall as average (on both ends of the floor) and hurting. Both Kenyon Martin and Nene are out for tonight, although I wouldn't doubt that Martin's season-ending knee injury may actually benefit the Nuggets this season. The most distinctive thing about the Nuggets is that they are the fastest-paced team in the league, and coupling that with the high-altitude setting of the Pepsi Center, may have an impact on the minutes dispersal on the Bulls roster.
Ben Gordon injured his hand in the Lakers game, but no word if he's out or not. I have a feeling that even if he's in he'll shoot terribly and blame the hand. Which may be a valid excuse, but it's still suck.

This is an open game thread, and hopefully I've preempted any reactionary 'Fire Skiles/Pax for not keeping J.R. Smith!' comments, but I doubt it...

Correct me if I'm wrong
'Melo-friendly
Once, 'Melo was the recipient of an uncontested alley-oop on the left side of the court. The other, 'Melo was able to regain control of the ball after having it poked away by Thabo while posting up. Thabo's arm was more or less ripped away by Anthony, who proceeded to dish it off to a slashing Kleiza (or someone) for the easy lay-in. (I loved how the Denver announcers said remarked how great a pass it was, that 'Melo had "eyes behind his headband" - while, on replay, it was shown that 'Melo never took his "real" eyes off of the slasher...and didn't even do the LeBron look-away-after-the-pass-to-make-it-seem-like-he-threw-the-pass-on-peripheral-vision-alone hoax).
Regardless, both instances resulted in points for Denver. Not time to panic yet.
Being Jordan fans, when can we begin legitimately griping about opposing teams' superstars getting all the calls?
Is there an exception to this rule for Jumpman-endorsed athletes?

Defense is a team effort, so it's hard to place the blame...there's no easy targets like Gordon was last year.
They had a lot of issues tonight early fronting guys and having them spin away to get open near the basket.

3rd quarter meltdown
Nice catch
It's crazy that with all the preseason talk of having no room at the 3 for both Deng and Noc that there'd be a time where neither of them were in the game.

Random (Mostly Announcer) Thoughts
Stacey King twice said about the Nuggets defense, its an illegal defense he's not guarding anyone. Stacey... that's not illegal anymore. Its called a zone defense.
Another Tom Dore line: "The thing you like about the Pro game, as opposed to a high school or college game, somebody get's a dunk like that in a high school or college game everybody stops, (King: exactly) in the pro game its two points (King: exactly) that's it, you made a basket." Right!
Apparently Stacey Kings "KYP" (Know Your Personnel) (man that really rolls off the tounge) applies to every situation that doesn't go the Bulls way.
So, Ben Gordon can hit almost any 4th quarter shot he takes. What do we have to do to get him to play like that earlier? Seriously? Maybe they should just tell him to shoot all the time, even if he has to force the shot.
With 24.4 seconds left the inbounder did travel, just like at the Houston game. Also, I replayed it twice and came up with 5.1 seconds between the start and timeout whistles.
Did I just LOL? AND...
Lets see Gooden, Martin, Dirk, The whole Spur bench, Howard, JR Smith, The center for LA. The center for Dallas and I guess everyones center. Anyone else? This has to be a fluke? They can't all be this good. Things should change.

First post....
In no particular order:
- Skiles is NOT a good game time coach when it comes to personnel. I think Skile should take Stacy's advice and KYP on his own team. Why on earth would Deng not get touches in the second half.. and even worse why would he be sitting during the 3rd quarter collapse???
- Ben Gordon is consistenly bad (especially playing 2) As crazy as it sounds, even with his awful ball handling and b-ball IQ, he may be a better 1.
- Slightly related, Duhon should NOT be starting. We can not afford to give up significant height at EVERY position. Watching "Junior" Smith have his way with Kirk just cemented this. At least Ben would provide releaf on offense (theoretically). But for now, I think Thabo at the 1 slash 2 could be a better option.
- Ben Wallace can not put a full game together. He flat takes D possessions off. He does not have the energy to go the whole time (w/ the exception of the Milwaukee game and Indiana) I don't understand this, because he is NOT that old yet. He should be right at his prime or the end of his prime.
- I am biginning to sense that this team only plays well when they are on the ropes. Miami style. The difference, we cannot afford to play like this. We need to come out with desperation EVERY game. Not just the last two minutes of a game or not after an 8 game (or 9 in 04) losing steak. If we continue to do this, we'll find ourself as an 8 seed, or worse yet.. KEEPING our lottery pick.
- I am very frustrated with Dore, Red and Stace. I almost feel as if they are contributing to this slide somehow.
- This has nothing to do with anything, but I am excited to see our new Black unis. and maybe they will change our attitude.
Anyone else
Right on
my question answered in today ESPN chat room
SportsNation David Thorpe: (12:09 PM ET ) There is too much talent in Chicago to struggle all year. Either a deal, or more improved play, will occur. It is still early. Feel better?
