Open (preseason) game thread: Bulls vs. Washington Wizards

[This thread was already pre-made in the Diaries, thanks! Game is at 7:30 and will be on ComcastSportsNet. Option27's excited, I'm excited, we're all excited, but I will just say beforehand to remember The Ten Commandments of Pre-Season. -Matt]

a few things I really am excited about tonight

Ben's Hair - I mean I would have to be a fool to not be curious about how our star aquisition is going to present himself for the first time in a Bulls uniform.

The Rookies - I think Skiles is gonna use our rookies a lot this preseason and it'll be fun to see how they stack up against real NBA players, not summer league duds.

Gordon's Defense - I'm sick of hearing how good Ben's defense is looking in camp. I wanna see it first hand.

Our Small Forwards - I can't wait to see Deng and Nocioni's improvment. I really wanna see if Deng really does have an improved 3 point shot.

Kirk - I just really can't wait to see Kirk nag and irritate opposing team's main guards again.

There is also another video that previews the first game at the tribune's website

I caught some of the rookies on the summer league webcasts. Thabo was impressive but was limited to two games, so I'll be interested to see how he fares against better competition. I predict at least one dazzling athletic play from Thomas. I'm looking forward to seeing how Skiles works the rookies and Khryapa into the lineup.

Thabo
is who I'm looking forward to see play. I also watched some of the summer league and was impressed with him.

Guess I will have to wait until Sunday to see Kirk play much. Skiles said he won't play a lot tonight.

I'm excited to see how they do tonight. It seems forever for basketball season to get here but the football season has been exciting so far too.

Deng
I dont really want to see if Deng has an improved 3 point shot.  Iw ouldnt mind it if he does, but I rather see if he is more agressive and if he has bulked up and can make a move or two in the post as well as drive to the hoop.

Either way, I wont be able to see the game cause...Dont have league pass and dont live in Chicago

by Sambossanova on Oct 11, 2006 4:36 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

reason
why i would like to see Deng improve on the three shot is cause i remember a couple of games last year  where his last second 3 woulda won us the game and more than a few times, see kirk drive and kick it out to Loul for an open 3 and still miss it...I also agree with you though and wanting to see him drive and be more aggresive but he was one of our wing players that actually DID cut towards the basket and not just find the open shot.

I'm excited too...
for every little thing.

Nothing gets me going like hoops season. Yes, the Bears kick ass. Yes, the Sox won the WS last season. Yes, I really enjoy the new tv show Friday Night Lights. But nothing has me more excited then this Bulls season.

Back at the beginning of the 1990-1991 Bulls season, I was too jaded to be excited about the season. The past failures at the hands of the Pistons kept the excitement level way below the boiling point. What was the use of getting over-excited when the Pistons would just rob me of that hope and glory? It was more a feeling of anxiety and fear of another failure than championship aspirations.

This season feels nothing like that. This is hope personified. This is that sparkle in the eye, skip in the step, whistle while I walk, I just got laid giddiness. I'm all 'Katie-bar-the-door' ready for this season to begin. It's palpable for me, this feeling, like I can reach out and actually touch the hope with my fingers.

For you guys who say I need to get outside more, well, you're probably right. But if I can judge anything from everyone else's posts, you guys are just as excited as me and will shit yourselves just like me if the Bulls return to the promise land this June.

Didn't Carney
have a valid excuse, like some sort of childhood injury or something? Thabo looked like he has trying to shoot hoops with a shot put.

Speaking of funny looking shots, I don't think I quite realized how horrible Big Ben is at the free throw line. He missed the rim by a good eight inches with one of those. How is it possible for an NBA player receiving $15+ million to be so awful at the line?

about ben wallace's FTs
he's not bending at the knees at all so everything is coming up short

by james@lifeinthecell on Oct 11, 2006 11:34 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

You're mixing up Brewer and Carney
Brewer had the odd shot because of the childhood injury.  Carney can shoot the three and jump out of the gym.  The Bulls took Thabo over Carney because Thabo handled the ball better (Could play the 1 next to Gordon) and was more advanced and dedicated on defense than Carney.

one preseason game does not a

Deng was good, Nocioni's jumper looked great, and Krap-man is a Songalia clone

by james@lifeinthecell on Oct 11, 2006 10:10 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Don't knock Khryapa...
Not yet, anyway. Songalia was very one-dimensional, a set shooter with limited mobility and even less defensive prowess. Krypto seems to move and defend a little better (with and without the ball), pass pretty well, and provide a comparable perimeter game. I think in the end he will prove to be an upgrade to Songalia, particularly because he's much younger.

I assumed
the Songaila comparison was a compliment. Khrapya does seem way more athletic than Songaila though, although I doubt he's as good of a passer.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Oct 12, 2006 9:47 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Khryapa
wasn't surrounded by good players last year like Songalia, so we'll get a better idea of how they compare this year.

Based on Yahoo, Songalia is an inch shorter but 30lbs heavier.  Not sure if that's muscle or fat, but they look about the same toning wise in the lone body photo Yahoo Sports has of them.

They played almost identical minutes last year and the only big differences are that Songalia took more shots and had more points as a result, while Khryapa had slightly more rebounds.  Songalia never looked like a defensive stud, so Khryapa being better wouldn't surprise me.

by Paxson Jackson on Oct 12, 2006 4:34 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

OVERALL
positives - Loul's shot. Victor's overall game. Big Ben's defense and rebounding. Tyrus' athletic ability to get back on defense quicker than average. The young guys ability to pull out a W outta ugly game.

negatives - Didn't notice much of the improved Gordon defense. FREE THROWS (besides Wallace). Thabo's jump shot. Overall lack of flow, but its preseason. Too many 3 second violations . . . and once again, FREE THROWS!

1st game people
these guys haven't played together for months or at all, I don't think you can draw any conclusions

preseason is to get into game shape and get timing down (game shape is different then running / working out in summer) - it is not for showing the skill level that one will have the 2nd week of season

anyone that plays basketball knows you can't just pickup ball and play at high level and jelling with teammates will take time

Good Game
Just finished watching it after Lost. (We might need a separate Lost thread each week!) Deng impressed me the most tonight. He looks like he's in mid-season form. Wallace was worth every penny. Viktor has a nice all-around game. Shooting, passing, handling, rebounding. He's gonna make Thomas have to earn his minutes. What the hell was up with the free throws? I can see Wallace, but it seemed like everyone was missing. However, I was happy we got to the line more than the Wizards. I think the discrepancy we saw last year will lessen with Wallace and Brown up front. Thabo looked a bit tenative. Luke didn't look much improved at all. Barrett might push Luke for that 15th spot. Big Marty!

Recap?
So why did people say tyrus thomas can jump...WAS THERE AN ALLEY OOP!!!!!!!. that would be amazing. those free throw numbers are ugly.

by Sambossanova on Oct 11, 2006 10:57 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

alley oop
actually, I said I was impressed with his leaping ability without the aid of an alley-oop dunk

he can get off his feet, and his secondary jump was awesome too (I didn't watch many previews of the guy this offseason, I just remember the tourney. And he's smaller next to the NBA guys as opposed to the college kids. But I guess that should be obvious.)

by james@lifeinthecell on Oct 11, 2006 11:11 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Alley Oop
The only one I saw was thrown to Big Ben in the half court offense (not a fast break).  The defender saw Ben gonig up, and grabbed him... 2 free throw attempts... you can guess how that went.

by tofferr on Oct 12, 2006 11:26 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Recap?!?!?!
Oh, you were asking me...

Just to point out to the new guys who haven't been through the grueling Blog-A-Bull season, you'll almost always find a game thread, and most times find a game recap afterwards. But not right afterwards, and sometimes not ever. The AP puts up a recap after every game, and there are several beat writers for our fine local papers who give you another the next morning.

So basically, don't be freaking out if you don't see me put up a long recap post for every game. Not to mention, if anyone has their own long-form thoughts on the game that they feel is outside the  boundries of the typical game thread, by all means create a diary of your own.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Oct 11, 2006 11:14 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Right!
Here are my quick off-hand observations:

Good:
-Deng looked great. I freaking love Luol Deng.
-Khrap-man looked good and was better than I thought on offense.
-Ty2 looked as raw as advertised, but at least showed that his size and athleticism are NBA-ready. As noted in an earlier comment, he had a great secondary jump in getting offensive rebounds.

Expected:
Wallace, Hinrich, Noc, Brown, Duhon all played like you'd think.

Bad:
-I didn't get the shakes thinking of Sefolosha's shot like some did, but he didn't play well.
-Sweetney must be buried in the doghouse, he didn't get in until midway through the fourth.
-Can't say much about Gordon's defense, I'm still more worried about the turnovers. He didn't shoot well, either.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Oct 11, 2006 11:59 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Poor Mike Sweetney
I hope he's got a lot of nice suits, because he may be spending a lot of time on the inactive list this year.  Unless one of the bigs gets hurt, I don't know where he's going to get any minutes.  I know he won't get any minutes if Skiles plays Malik Allen ahead of him like he did tonight.

by Big D on Oct 12, 2006 12:08 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He could have been the Hero
But instead Sweetney was the buffoon.  Missing 3 of 4 free throws at the very end that could sealed the victory.  That's not the way to gain Scott Skile's trust.

Now Andre Barrett gets to be the hero. And who is that guy?  I don't think I ever saw him before.  He looked really quick!  His game
winning basket was great.

I liked how Scott Skiles kept his very bottom of the bench guys out there until the very end to see what they could do.

by HinrichManeuver on Oct 12, 2006 1:35 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

How did Sweetney Look?
So obviously he must be completely out of shape. Did he look it? What a shame. It has to be destroying his confidence. he'll probably sit until he gets in shape, is traded, or is needed in fat-guy situations. either that, or he'll have a job with the Matadors.

He also had a wrap on his leg... so its hard to tell if the reason he wasn't getting off the ground was because of his weight, or a bum wheel.

Tyrus Offensive Skill? Jumper?
I didn't see the game. Everything in this thread and this morning's trib could be said about Tyson Chandler. Was there any indication that T-Time has some semblance of an offensive game? (I've seen some of the highlights of the summer on youtube, and of course NCAA highlights. As far as Tyrus perimeter game, it seemed the spirit is willing, but he is nowhere close to Skiles allowing him to shoot jumpers on a regular basis in the NBA, am I wrong? I hope?)

by GWKD on Oct 12, 2006 9:13 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He liked the baseline jumper
and I thought he adlibed (sp?) a little too much; that's probably why Matt called him raw. But he is explosive! And he will block some shots.

Overall, the athleticism of this team (mind you this observation comes after one preseason game) has improved. A healthy, rested Luol is gonna impress God. (I just love hyperbole!  And whoever had that signature Luol for MVP in 07 or 08 was onto something.)

by james@lifeinthecell on Oct 12, 2006 9:20 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

'raw'
Thomas attacked the basket and was aggressive when he got the ball, unlike Chandler (at least Chandler after his offensive confidence was destroyed). He even ran the floor after getting a steal, and attempted a three.

His jumpshooting didn't look bad, but while he was getting close looks, the finishing ability was non-existent. Luckily he was able to spring back up to tip in his own misses, but there were a couple of blown layups in there...maybe those used to be dunks in college?

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Oct 12, 2006 9:45 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

agreed
Deng may be our most valuable player in a short time for anyone of you guys thinking we should trade him.  The thing that worries me most about Tyrus shooting so much is that it remind me of Marcus Fizer. I remember Fizer shooting every time he touched the ball almost as if he was trying to prove to people that he can be a huge offensive weapon. DONT TURN OUT LIKE MARCUS, TYRUS!

Thabo doesn't play like this. I remember seeing the summer league games and he played much better than what was shown last night. I think the nerves just got the best of him.

I must say that the 5 second Sweets was in the game, he was productive....didnt ya think?

and by the way...Gordon looks the exact same. lol

by Option27 on Oct 12, 2006 10:42 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Fizer
Tyrus definately had the Fizer-esque tunnel vision last night when he got the ball. Maybe he just felt the need to 'prove' he belonged, or something. I doubt he'll be encouraged to shoot so much when the games start to count.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Oct 12, 2006 10:53 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

boy
do I hope you're right, cause Tyrus always speaks of proving to people that he's more of a perimiter player than he was in college, so unless something improves, I'll be worried.

by Option27 on Oct 12, 2006 10:59 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Tyrus
I hope it was either him just wanting to prove himself... or maybe the coaches told him to try some moves.  If he plays like that in a regular season game he won't be on the court with Skiles.

Man, I think Big Marty has supplanted Luke as the token "really tall end-of-the-bench guy who sucks but still gets me fired up when he's in the game." I can't wait to see what'll happen if he ever gets in a game in the actual season.  "Marty! Marty! Marty!"

will end up in one of the exotic D-League locations.  If an injury were to occur, which I hope to Darwin it doesn't, it seems like we have enough depth to not be screwed at C.

Tom (I think) gave a shout out to a big Bulls fan in the courtside seats... Burt Yuri.  Is that our best celebrity fan?  Or maybe he's Tom's proctologist?  Google doesn't know him.

Not only did they blow Khrappy's pronunciation... they all seemed to make an effort to say Veek-tor (rather than Victor).

by tofferr on Oct 12, 2006 11:39 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Veek-tor
When I looked up the pronunciation of Kryapa's name, (Ha-RAP-ah) it did say "Veek-tor" for his first name, so maybe say they got something right, accidently.  I definitely heard Stacy King say Veek tor!

I have
to say Ben W. was what I expected. Luol looked good but the other 3 starters didn't play their game. I expected more out of them.

A little disappointed in Thabo but he has a sweet accent. Tyrus did better than I thought he would. Khrapya played very well and I'd never heard of Andre before but he came through at the end.

I'm tired just thinking about how hard practice is going to be for them today. Skiles was not a happy man last night. Freakin free throws.

I'm sure all the players went to sleep last night
knowing they had suicides to look forward to in the morning.  We attempted more FT's than the other team (never would have thought that), but only shot made 52.8%.

I agree with everything you said though.  Part of me thought Deng would get more rebounds.  Yahoo says he only played 21 minutes and got 4 rbds.  I think that rate would put him just below his rpg last year when adjusted for minutes played.  He shot really well which is a good sign.

I expected more out of Hinrich, Gordon, and Thabo.  I hoped Noc would come out and be a monster like against Miami, but I can't really blame him for playing it safe and trying not to get injured during the preseason.

Gordon's defense
You know Ben Gordon defense was actually not bad at all. I mean he didn't get beat at all and I saw him pressuring a lot. I'm looking forward to the game  at Kansas. Wallace looks great, just what I expected. If he can at least shot 50% from the line then that would be alright. Thabo looked nervous but he's long and lanky and he can handle the ball. Mike Sweetney needs to get it together though!
