Open Game Thread #79: Bulls vs. Cleveland LeBrons

[Thanks to bullshooter for today's game preview. -Matt]

Playing out the String

Oh yeah, there is a game tonight.  That's been the prevailing feeling for the last few weeks now that Bulls have gone into unequivocal tanking mode.  Not coincidentally, most of you should feel lucky that you didn't witness ignominious defeats to Washington and more deplorably Miami.

But that's in the past and soon this season will be thankfully as well.  As bad as this season has been, I still think the future is bright and tonight should bring more vivid glimpses of that future in the form of more minutes for Thabo (please God, let them bench Hughes), TT (stay out of foul trouble) and JoNo, regardless of whatever the official Boylan statements may be.

Tonight's opponent, the LeBron's come into town one pinched sciatic nerve from being in much worse shape than even our Bulls.  And I am not talking about Ben Wallace, who's played most of the season as if his lower vertebrae were fused in the offseason.  No, LBJ is wearing down and the Bulls have been able to overcome his hot starts and that fact that Loul can't seem to get in his way.  Earlier season victories featured a well-timed collision with Hinrich and later a double-team by Thabo and JoNo.  In fact, Boylan tried putting TT on Dwight Howard for stretches, why not try him on LBJ in the first half tonight.  Deng should be able to handle Wallace, I hope.

As an added bonus, tonight's game is on tWWL.  And doubly bonusly, the game starts at 6pm CDST (this time I am really sure), so you have time to watch the game and still go out and enjoy yourself.  So sit back and cheer on the Bulls in their quest for the 8th-most ping pong balls (they're currently tied in the win column).  And if you haven't figured out yet how to keep this Bulls team from screwing up your evening...

Sadly, though the standings
show us down a half to Charlotte, by virtue of taking 3 out of 4 on the season we are actually down 1 1/2 to the Bobs.

We've got some heavy tanking ahead of us if we want to capture that coveted 8th lotto pick.

Nice game thread, bullshooter.  Good to see you've been able to hang on to your sense of humor.

I'm not sure if the tie-breakers are the same

Im afraid Hughes
would play with a walking boot and his right arm in a sling. The guy will not be denied "his" minutes. I loathe him.

Was someone asking about bJ Armstrong
a while back?

Randolph, a 6-foot-11 Dallas native averaged 15.6 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game this past season. He will be represented by former NBA player B.J. Armstrong within the Wasserman Media Group.

This story reminds me of something
I once heard about flipping a coin.

Let's say you just met two girls, and you're undecided about which one of them to ask out.  So you flip a coin.  Before you toss the coin, you say, "OK, Judy will be heads, and...I can't remember what her name was...will be tails."

Now flip the coin.  Heads.  Judy.  Immediately, ask yourself how you feel about that.  It is in this immediate checking in with yourself that the true value of coin flipping lies.  In that instant it opens a window to your true feelings.

So when I saw hscs's headline I experienced a momentary upliftedness, and I knew without a doubt I wanted Paxson gone.

BTW--I'm not saying this always works (or ever works), as the result of that coin flip and I ended up in divorce court not long after.

by alec on Apr 11, 2008 5:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Boers and Bernstein's rumors
don't have a good track record (See Kobe trade).

I saw the story yesterday, but didn't put up a diary - but the tribune, sun-times and True Hoop all picked up the news out of Kankaee - Ryan Paxson is joining the Marines.  John just may have other things on his mind these days.

by KT on Apr 11, 2008 5:54 PM CDT up reply actions

oh I know
Bernstein's sources could be JoeJoe and JoeJoe for all I know. The segment doesn't appear to be online, but I thought it was worth mentioning as we're officially in rumor mode until 2008-09 kicks off.

by hscs on Apr 11, 2008 6:24 PM CDT up reply actions

I was listening at the time
and it can hardly be called a rumor.

They basically said that there's no way Paxson is fired, and the only way he leaves if he quits. Then they followed it up by saying how miserable he's been this year, so maybe he will quit.

Of course, after hiring Boylan, who would notice?

Thabo's tears can cure AIDS
They've put Noah on James before, him and Thomas can do a better job than anyone else on the team.  If he's hitting these crazy shots, at least prevent him from getting those damn dunks where he preens and glares for 50 seconds afterwards.

I got in just in time to hear the recap of Lebron's big quarter - that's the kind of thing I enjoy in highlights on Sportscenter or when it's someone unexpected, but don't enjoy watching all that much.  No wonder Larry hated being on that team.

Tyrus is a bum.
The genius mentor of young talent decided that TT did not deserve pt early on and has done his best to prove he was right in his evaluation..(Thomas doesn't run the court, doesn't play within the system (whatever it is) on either end of the court, yada yada yada.

Meanwhile, the novice Hubie Brown raves about his quickness, athleticism, upside, all around potential and says he needs to get more minutes.

So who are you going to believe, Jimbo the Giant, or little Hubie?  Oh what might have been if he was their coach.  Remember how he turned around a young Memphis team and how they collapsed once he left?  But what does he know?  Great work Jimbo, giving Duhon all these minutes tonight.

by Khalid El-Amin on Apr 11, 2008 8:42 PM CDT up reply actions

i know you're being facetious
but i honestly don't think kobe finishes in the top 2 in mvp voting, let alone wins it.  don't you think that cp3 and lebron have had the better seasons? kobe is a great player but this season he's just not been as great as the other 2.  i'm actually kind of surprised you think its kobe.  i don't really think its even that close.

by MarketMaker on Apr 11, 2008 8:45 PM CDT up reply actions

I just think...
Even if he isn't really the MVP he'll probably get it this year because he never has in the past.

I'm not alone in that either. You really think it isn't close?

by Khalid El-Amin on Apr 11, 2008 8:52 PM CDT up reply actions

to me what the voters will look at
is that lebron has no one around him and manages to carry 11 scrubs on his shoulders and do ridiculous stuff for them to win.  CP3 is making everyone else on his team way, way better.  i think he might win it because it is very much like nash's mvp season.  he is so good with the ball that he's got all his teammates having near career years.  kobe has been good, but they had to make a trade to bolster his team.  if they were where they are without pau, i could understand him winning. who knows? maybe he could still win it, but to me it's like KG.  great player, good season, but too much supporting cast when you've got other viable candidates without previous all-stars still at their peak.

by MarketMaker on Apr 11, 2008 8:59 PM CDT up reply actions

I think a very strong case can be made for Kobe.
Plus there are a few things working against LBJ--he's in the East, and he barely has his team over .500.  They'd be far out of the play-off hunt if they had to play a West schedule.

As for CP3's and Kobe's supporting casts, I'm not sure CP3 doesn't have at least as good of team mates as Kobe...maybe even better.

Kobe's also had to deal with major injuries and personnel shifts in his line-up.

Finally, I think most opinion has it that Kobe is still the best all around player in the world.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Kobe MVP, especially if he brings the Lakers in with the best record in the West...and a win tonight puts them only a half game out.

by alec on Apr 11, 2008 10:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Come to think of it,
Tracy McGrady probably deserves it as much as anyone--maybe more.

by alec on Apr 12, 2008 12:09 AM CDT up reply actions

Deserving the MVP...
And actually WINNING the MVP is two seperate conversations altogether.

by Khalid El-Amin on Apr 12, 2008 12:30 PM CDT up reply actions

To be honest T-Mac hasn't been that great
This season.  Winning 22 in a row without Yao for a lot of them is a very impressive thing, but they won those games on very strong defense, and huge contributions from Scola, Alston (who actually played like a real PG), and Landry.  McGrady has had a lot of games where he scores 25 points on 22 shots. Not to mention, the Rockets won 22 in a row, but they're still only the 5th seed in the West.

LA's win basically sealed the deal for Kobe.  As for LeBron, no one can win the MVP when your team is that shitty. At least Cleveland had some enjoyment for a few years, because that guy is probably talking to Jay-Z right now about how to properly introduce him at the starting lineups for the Brooklyn Nets.

The Cavs have been awful recently
There's absolutely no way James finishes in the top 3 in voting anymore.  KG has continued to keep Boston playing at a high level.  They've only lost TWO games this year by double-digits! James has had maybe the best statistical season this year, and PER and Roland may back him, but common sense should take him out of the equation. His team may be shitty, but Kobe has had to deal with tons of injuries as well, not to mention an injured hand since like January. Aside from LeBron, no one has more expected of him than Kobe every year, and this year he actually realized how to play efficient basketball instead of just being a scoring machine.

i HATE seeing a 17 pt lead.  Normally I'd be very happy watching us demolish Big Ben, but let's go for that 7th pick and better ping pong shot.....

I don't understand why we throw our hands up the last few nights and give up only to play hard.....

Maybe the guys read the paper and saw that some Eastern Conf team contacted Larry Brown and knew there was an end to thiS Boylan nonsense.

I gave up on this team, I haven't watched in about 8 days and it's killing me......

My wife's wathcing GH of all things, which is nauseating, I need my Bulls fix, but I don't want to watch them if we're winning, because again it's just another disappointment in this disappointing season.

Booby was talking smack
Ever since he deflected hinrichs pass. Hinrich tried ignoring him but eventually said something along the lines of "you guys are going down anyway" then they had a few encouters on a few screens, which finally led to the double foul. The t came when booby kept saying crap, hinrich didnt say anything back, and when he finally turned around to say something (he faced away from me so i dont know exactly what he said) and began walking away (i think he saw the ref who had heard/read what he said) and the ref td him up.

Wow.

Its seems like he needs another year.  Noah is showing his collegiate hoops experiences got him ready to leap to the next level quicker than Tyrus, so give T time another year.   Yikes, there I said it.

We still need beef, but seems like primary is to have a backcourt guy that is either big and a shooter, or really quick... or both.

It seems like Paxson told Gooden
to sit his ass down and the organization will take care of him because that's what it took for Boylan to put Tyrus on the court.  A shame that this did not happen a dozen or so games earlier.  The Noah/Thomas frontcourt showed some potential against the same frontcourt that was in the Finals last year, sans Gooden.

by messwiththebull on Apr 11, 2008 9:12 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah, gee,
I wonder what would happen if Tyrus ever got any minutes? He did ok at Golden State, but how would he do in big games against league superstars like Kevin Garnett and LeBron James?

Two key plays that showed off his ability were when LeBron went up for a runner and Noah defended; James hung in the air and put up a floater that (as Jaina said above) was slammed out of the lane by Tyrus.

Then a couple of minutes later, he found himself with the ball 20' away from the basket on offense. Instead of taking the open J, he took one dribble and went in for the slam before getting fouled by Smith.

For once, the game was saved by our young bigs (both of them! at the same time! in extended minutes!) attacking the rim. Noah: 17 and 11 in 39 minutes; Thomas:  20 and 14 in 35 minutes. Good job, Boylan. It's too late to save your job, but you may be getting the hang of this player development thing after all.

Against Boston Tyrus had 24pts 7rbds 4/1/08
Yeah it perplexes me why we keep yanking this guy's chain.  He has now played for Skiles and Boylan, both attempting to make Thomas think the game more than he should be.  PGs should think the game.  PFs should run and be recipients of the thinking PG.  A guy like Thomas, you just gotta let him go out there and play instinctively.  Like Shawn Marion for instance.  When you ask him to do too much of something else and keep him looking over his shoulder whenever things don't go EXACTLY the way you as coach want to see it, that takes what makes him special away from him.  The improvisational ability to be an offensive playmaker/defensive haymaker!!!

Does anyone remember when he was a rookie?  Almost everytime he came into the game he would do something that could be classified as specatcular.  He'd make some sort of breathtaking athletic play.  The type of plays this team would have DIED to have someone make this year.  But he's being micromanaged to much to great an extent for the type of player he is.

by lexdiamonds0730 on Apr 12, 2008 8:45 AM CDT up reply actions

Without Gooden
The Boylan leash grows in length.  Noc isn't effective at the 4 against taller power fowards.  6'10" Joe Smith can just shoot over 6'7" Noc.  If it's Gerald Wallace or Jason Maxiell playing the 4 then Noc won't give up length to them.

Without Gooden, Thomas is really the only PF other than Simmons.  Noc came in midway through the third and floundered.  Boylan had just pulled Tyrus for the second charge in the lane, but once Noc's poor play and fouls became too much Boylan put Thomas right back in the game.  I maybe sat for 2-3 minutes.  If Gooden were available Thomas would be stuck in 20 minutes of burn land and no more and probably less.

Gooden sitting is good.  Tyrus knows his leash has grown.

You are right. I hear you on that.
But this was a pressure free game for the Bulls.  We are out of the race now so Deng was free to let his deepest inhibitions run wild.  Secretly, he wants to break Steve Kerr's 3pt career percentage mark of .454 so he figured he'd start last night.

Luol might be toast
He regressed, and if he was a locker room issue this year, we should trade him.  Inconsistent effort, plus lack of quickness == bench player on good team.     And we are so good.

by iBurkey on Apr 11, 2008 10:29 PM CDT reply actions

Maybe milquetoast.
But I'm not so sure about "toast", only because the prevailing view coming out of the organization (and in the Chicago press) since the end of the '05-'06 year has implied that Deng is the real prize and that Ben Gordon is "just a scorer".

That being said, I certainly hope they don't pay too much for a 3 who deploys almost exclusively mid-range jumpers. Everyone always says how he's one of the best 3's in the league. So then why has he not even been invited to an All-Star game as a sub?

Not only that, but pretty good 2's and 3's seem pretty commonplace. It's the traditional bigs and 1's that are rare. Deng's not a bad player, but the Bulls would do just fine without him.

Who is everybody???
The national media jumps on the bandwagon of whomever may be hot at a certain time.  But in truth, as I've stated here many times the past 2 years, I can name at least 15 small forwards I'd rather have than Deng.  He is not close to being an all-star.  He will NEVER be voted a starter as long as LeBron, Caron Butler, Paul Pierce, Shawn Marion (if he stays in the east), Richard Jefferson (who in my opinion is a better offensive and defensive player and far more explosive) and increasingly more so guys like Iguodala, Josh Smith....and that's just the small forwards.

You hit the nail on the head though about average wingmen being the easiest to replace.  Great PGs and Great Centers don't come along often.  But the average running/jumping wingman is far more common.

Interesting find though.  Look at this list from Sept 2007.  Ranks the top eastern conference small forwards BEFORE the start of the season.  Deng, fresh off looking like a superstar against the Miami Heat in the playoffs last year, was 3rd.  There are at least 4 guys below him on this list that I'd take before I take him (at the money he's asking that is, because given the choice I'd like to keep Deng...just not for 10 mil a year for what he gives us).

I agree with the "at least 4" part,
and actually, I'd even expand that to any other SF in the top ten of that list. And some of those guys would be higher up on the list if injuries and crazy team situations didn't halt their productivity (Simmons, Q, maybe Garbajosa).

I think Dunleavy should be higher up on that list as well.

But Antoine Walker? Um... that's gotta be a joke, right?

"Duhon, don't make that garbage-time jumper... Save it for the next game!"

by bullhockey on Apr 12, 2008 11:29 AM CDT up reply actions

When I said 15, I was saying 15 other small...
...forwards in the NBA.  Not just on that list.  No way I'd take Antoine now over Deng.

But in addition to the names in that article you got:

-Carmelo
-Durant
-Josh Howard
-Peja Stojakovic (since like Deng he only shoots jump shots but at least his are 3 pointers)
-Rudy Gay
-Jeff Green (I think he's gonna be a really nice player
-Stephen Jackson (who is Luol Deng's polar opposite when it comes to crunch time play)

That's 6 more not even counting the Eastern Conference guys mentioned before.

So just to clarify, I definitely wasn't saying 15 guys from the East.  Whenever you get to Antoine at this point in his career (no disrespect intended), then the pickings are gettin' slim...LOL.

Deng not that good
The team was wrong, he hit his ceiling last year, and has serious quickness issues.  Combine that with with a serious lack of competitiveness apparent by him disappearing for lots of games, Id move him now.

by iBurkey on Apr 12, 2008 1:31 AM CDT up reply actions

Preferably, I'd keep Deng....
...but only if he comes off this 10 million/yr thing.  Until he shows more than mere flashes of being solid EVERY NIGHT, he can't have that kind of money from us.  This summer the market for SF's will be set by Andre Iguodala, Shawn Marion, Ron Artest, Josh Smith (All quite possibly getting max deals) and Corey Maggette has a player's option for next season so if he opts out that means he's pretty sure he can get more than the 9.5 mil he's owed next season.

That's just small forwards.  You got guys like Baron Davis, Gilbert Arenas, Elton Brand, Allen Iverson, Monta Ellis, Louis Williams (tough young guard from Philly if you didn't know), Antawn Jamison, etc... all likely free agents this summer.  That's a lot of money going out for guys who are either better or potentially better than Deng.  So I don't know how much money other teams are gonna throw at him.  Hopefully we end up being able to keep him cheap.

Now he could always sign the 4.4 mil qualifying offer and be unrestricted in 2009, but with the way he played this season I seriously doubt he'll do that.

This is an assessment of Deng in a L.A. Clippers..
..forum:

"Deng is an elite young talent, as was witnessed during last year's playoffs. He can guard three positions masterfully. He is long, quick, fast, agile, moves excellently without the ball, is dazzling from mid-range, and has a great attitude. The scariest thing about Luol is that he is only 22. If he can improve his touch from beyond the three point arc (a place he currently rarely ventures), he could legitimately be the league's top all-around wing player".

First of all, did he forget about two guys named Kobe Bryant and LeBron James?  This is the kool-aid that people have been drinking that initially soured me on Deng.  The kool-aid from the "Super Deng" we say manhandle a garbage Miami team last year.  This man even suggests maxing out Deng at 13 mil a year.  Deng has been nothing but a big tease.  He has many of the qualities above, BUT he lacks two MAJOR ingredients that all GREAT players possess.  He lacks the heart and mindset to be great and without those he'll never be who we want him to be.

Yeah, I agree with
the assessments on here (and agree that the mvn clippersblog guy was getting caught up in hype).

The question with Deng becomes, if Deng leaves, are his 17 ppg and mid-range game easy to replace? I'm guessing yes. Would his defense be easy to replace? I don't know, but maybe, if you get a good athlete with a willingness to work at it.

Are his positive attitude and good practice habits easy to replace? Maybe, maybe not. He wasn't a great teammate this year, as evidenced by his taking long, contested jumpers early in the shot clock. But could he be any worse next year?

Radical thought though:  Let's say they both accept qualifying offers and fail to impress the Bulls, and the Mavs or Warriors of the world are willing to pay for their potential. If Deng and BG leave, wouldn't their 36 points theoretically be the easiest 37 points to replace on the team, if you assume that 2's and 3's are the easiest positions to replace?

I think it's a tough proposition because those are the two highest scorers on a team that doesn't score. It just seems like the perfect storm of bad contract situations, especially for a team that won't spend.

If Ben Gordon ends up on...
... a team like the Warriors where they don't expect him to play much defense and he can fire away at will in that offense...LOOK OUT WORLD!!!  This guy might average 30ppg in Golden State.  OR if you put him on a team with Jason Kidd and Dirk Nowitzki...no longer does Gordon draw the bulk of the defensive attention and he thrives.

As for Deng, there is no denying he is talented.  But something is missing with him.  He just seems to be a mentally fragile player to me and that's just not gonna cut it.  It seems he'll never be as good as he could be.  But it apperas that Deng moreso than anyone needs to play alongside a superstar in order to maximize his potential.  It'd be nice if we could get that superstar in Chicago for him to play next to though...LOL

His name is Monta Ellis, and while Gordon may have a better outside shooting touch, Ellis is absolutely amazing getting to the basket and finishing, which is something the Bulls are completely devoid off.

monta is better than BG in every facet of the game except for shooting the three ball.  BG has a little more weight on his bones.

the scary thing is that Monta still has not reached his full potential.  he was the best player on that team the second half of this season this year.  biedrens did not start to come on until the last 10 games or so.

no way the Warriors try to get a guy like BG when they already have a guaranteed future perennial all star at the same position.

by Orlando Woolridge on Apr 12, 2008 2:01 PM CDT up reply actions

I didn't say they'd try to get him.
Of course they won't try to get him while they have Ellis.  I was simply saying that if Gordon were in a similar situation where he isn't the sole offensive option (or close enough to it as is the case on this Bulls team in my opinion) and the offense was wide open and defense wasn't much of a priority the Gordon would thrive.

by lexdiamonds0730 on Apr 12, 2008 4:20 PM CDT up reply actions

You are making my point for me!!
If Monta Ellis were a Bull he'd get benched for some of the shots he takes and for not playing enough defense.  If Gordon had that sort of freedom he'd be more high powered than he already is.

Not to take anything away from Ellis because I love watching that kid play.  He got what I call that "dog" in him.  Where you can see how hungry he is when he's out there. But i'm simply saying that Gordon will thrive as well if he finds a situation like that.  After all he averages 20pts here where there are truly no other offensive options down the stretch and the coaches have played with his minutes like a yo-yo the past few years.  Can you imagine Gordon with no holds barred...like Ellis in Golden State?

His offense will come to him after playing solid D.  It elevates his confidence.  That helps Luol.  He does show signs that other aspects of the game can bring him down, but his defense should always be strong to lift him.

Thank You
The last game i went to was when the bulls played the suns on a sunday (wasnt televised). The bulls lost but hinrich had a great game overall but they lost. I remember telling my friend before the game that if hinrich had a good game i would be happy, however at the end of the game i felt sort of dissapointed that the bulls had lost. Although hinrich didnt have a great game this time around ( i blame it on delonte wests block of hinrich, WHICH HAPPENED LIKE TEN FEET IN FRONT OF ME!!! I had to pull my hat over my face after that one) the bulls won and the feeling was alot better.

I think its more due to the atmosphere of the game, although ive come to the conclusion. At the moment, bulls fans care alot more about Big Macs then actually winning. I mean if the bulls had won last night the fans wouldnt have been too happy if it was by less then 100. I mean players were booed when they would foul lebron on a fast break. The only reason people want the bulls to win is so that they could get big macs, that sort of is sad...but its been a sad year.

Also there was a guy 4 rows behind me who would yell to boylan "HEY BOYLAN PUT AARON GRAY IN" When boylan and gray finally turned around and looked at the guy he yelled "YEA!!! YOU KNOW WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT, THATS A DOUBLE DOUBLE EVERY GAME!!" it was quite hilarious though i felt sorry for Gray.

This was a surprisingly fun game
I'd be scared to death of trading Tyrus in the offseason.  It's not like his value is even all that high, so trading him just to get rid of him would be silly.  Even if there's only a 25% chance that he reaches his potential (I think it's higher than that, if the Bulls select a quality coach), I'll take that over whatever "veteran locker room presence" you'd get for him.

I was surprised by how little Ben Wallace was booed tonight.  I guess it's kind of pointless anymore, since he's hardly even good enough to boo (he's hardly on the court long enough to boo him either).

Cleveland is not a very good team, and I'll be stunned if they get out of the first round (especially now that Arenas is back).  Lebron has got to be counting down the days until he's a free agent in two years.  It would be nice if the Bulls had some cap room in 2010 just in case . . .

by iBurkey on Apr 12, 2008 1:33 AM CDT reply actions

SFs need handles
Tyrus looks at the ball when he starts his dribble.  He would need to develop more balance, better control of his upper body to navigate the trees in the paint, and really improve his dribbling.

If he had these skills he would be one wicked small forward.  When you can basically fall towards the basket and still elevate for the dunk you are special.

I think tyrus and deng have the same kind of handles, both not too good. Duhon and Thabo were playing one on one before the game, and duhon was kicking thabos ass, mainly because thabos handles werent good enough to let him drive through duhon.

It was interesting last night
that when the Cavs went to full-court pressure and began eating into the Bulls lead, Boylan brought in Duhon.  Duhon began bringing the ball up and immediately stopped the bleeding. The contrast between his ball handling and anyone else on the Bulls was stark.

Duhon may not have great court vision, and he may not be a great passer, but he can easily out-handle everyone else on the team.  Kinda sad, really.

by alec on Apr 12, 2008 1:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Duhon is an awesome backup
His handles are really good, and in terms of passing he is a little better then kirk and perhaps a hell-of-a-lot more flashier. While watching the game last night, there was a few times when duhon attempted to dribble penetrate and ben joe smith or Big Z would sort of try to close the gap so duhon would dribble out. I remarked to my friend that maybe that is what made derron williams, and steve nash, and chris paul so great. When duhon backed out, that hole hadnt yet closed, but he didnt risk it.

Probably a smart thing to do, but all star pgs would have attacked those very holes, see them coming before the appeared and made thier way through them. THey do damage after going through those holes. This is in essence why duhon would never be a great starter. Kirk makes up for his lack of pg skills with his height and his ability to (at least potentially) score. Duhon isnt much of a scorer (one on one with thabo and nichols proved that duhon cant hit a jumper on the dribble) and as a pg  he is serviceable, but cannot be a great one. He is a backup and should have a great career as an awesome backup, sorry for him the bulls might have showed him visions of a starting career when one was not there.

With Ben Wallace in a Cavaliers uniform and Drew Gooden done for the season, Noah and Thomas took their minutes and filled them with a combined 37 points, 25 rebounds and seven blocks.

When Noah dunked on back-to-back third-quarter possessions and Thomas followed with a rim rattler, the Bulls had ripped off a 10-1 run and later led by as many as 18 points.

KC also chatted with Ben Wallace in the Cavs locker room prior to the game.  We didn't get any quotes from Wallace.  We did get more Thomas and Noah though.
"I love playing with that guy," Thomas said. "He makes the game easy for me and I think I make the game easier for him. The more we play together and the more we play in the league and learn, it will be great for us and the organization."Challenged at a shootaround before the game by assistant Pete Myers, Thomas responded with 20 points and 14 rebounds for his sixth double-double.

one thing i liked
was at the end we caught glimpse of the guys talking to their former teammates - lebron and larry, tyrus and joe, someone and big ben (can't remember), even showing lebron double-backing to say hi to drew.  it was especially nice to see tyrus and joe talking since i know they were close as teammates.  lol iirc joe was "wired" on the last espn game against them and was trash talking tyrus at one point. :)

I liked the end, too.
I noticed that Boylan tried to congratulate Tyrus, but Tyrus looked right through him like he wasn't even there, and walked over to have a conversation with Joe Smith.

I imagine of all the players who can't see the last of Boylan soon enough, Tyrus has got to be at the head of that list.

Question about 1st Qtr:
When the Cavs were about to blow the game open in the first quarter Boylan called a time out. I was listening in my car, and the brillian Bill Wennington thought that the feed had already gone off the air. So right after the Bulls called time out, Wennington goes "Look at Jim--look at Jim...!" Then there was radio silence for a couple more seconds before they finally went to commercial.

Anyone know why he was saying look at Jim?

I'm guessing either he was looking completely distraught or else he was visibly pissed at someone?

"Duhon, don't make that garbage-time jumper... Save it for the next game!"

ahaha
i didn't even notice that.  that is brilliant.

What is this a reference to?
"Tyrus Thomas, challenged sharply by assistant coach Pete Myers in the pregame shootaround, notched his sixth double-double (20 points and 14 rebounds)."

It's just like the franchise (and Hanley) to ascribe TT's performance to some ill-advised motivational gimmick.

Ain't it the truth
I was so pissed off when I read that this morning.

Apropos of nothing, and with no follow-up, that little tidbit was just dropped in the game recaps.  It was so fucking insulting.

The coaches are so intent on taking credit for any good thing the team does.  They can't just say, "Tyrus played well."  They have to say, "See what happens when I cleverly challenge Tyrus?"

by alec on Apr 12, 2008 1:11 PM CDT reply actions

Boylan did
said in his post game interview that Tyrus was tremendous last night. He didn't take credit for Tyrus's play.

I watched
the game late last night. Tyrus and Joakim were just outstanding. They were not going to be denied. Great game for both of them.

i loved
when they showed thabo and aaron shaking their hands after noah's dunk in celebration the same way he does :)  it was kinda cute.

I laughed
when I saw them doing that. It was cute.

Not to rain on the parade
But of course they looked good, they were playing against the Corpse.

On another note, anyone want to explain how Thabo played 18 minutes and generated nothing but 1 rebound and 1 missed shot?  What the hell is that about?

To tie these things together, Wallace also played 18 minutes and was 0-1 shooting.  He did manage 5 rebounds, 3 blocks and a foul, but the most entertaining thing he did was to lead Lebron to bitch about the at-will interior scoring the Bulls were doing,

"The layups and dunks disappointed me the most tonight," James said. "I'm never disappointed in my teammates. They had four or five dunks in the fourth quarter. It was embarrassing, very embarrassing. It's not good to see that. ... It's just embarrassing."

Thabo = inconsistent!
dummy! low bbiq! still plays like a rookie! should've stayed in school! only skill is jumping!

::cough::

whoa. Lapsed into a why-Tyrus-isn't-allowed-to-have-bad-games fit there. My bad.

Anyway a better question is why he only played 18 minutes. Start the countdown clock to Duhon's free agency...

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Apr 12, 2008 3:30 PM CDT up reply actions

He only played 18
because he was Deng's backup.  It's shocking that he played that much seeing as how they love to leave Deng in forever.  Deng seemed better with lower minutes, but he still didn't do anything in the 4th.  And he didn't do anything to stop LBJ in the first either...
Don't tell anybody, but here's hoping TT puts it all together.

if that's the plan
works for me. They have no plan though, so it's likely just because Duhon gave him the cute face during shootaround.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Apr 12, 2008 4:23 PM CDT up reply actions

I take that back
Deng didn't do much either, except hit some threes.
