2008 Trade Deadline(2pm CST) thread

::crickets::

Wait a minute??

It's possible a smaller deal could spring at the last minute. A league source said Toronto is having discussions with the Bulls regarding Joe Smith. Given his productivity and relatively modest $5.8 million salary next season, the Bulls appear inclined to keep him.

Chris Duhon's expiring salary also could attract last-minute interest.

oh.

One thing's for certain: whether or not starting last night's overtime with Duhon/Gordon/Hinrich/Smith/Wallace, and following with Duhon/Gordon/Hinrich/Nocioni/Wallace(!) was a case of 'showcasing' or not (it wasn't), that rationalization is out the window from now on.

at least....
the trade deadline gives me something to ponder while at work.  I mean NO!  I won't do that...I'll be working hard...and have absolutely no time for such things.

Fire Boylan!

I like the name mis-spelling
It's so hard to look at a comment referring to Paxon and not start laughing.

duhon...
I'd be happy if he were traded for a ham sandwich.

by Lt.Dan on Feb 21, 2008 9:06 AM CST   0 recs

What I hope for post-deadline
I hope Pax releases Boylan and coaches the rest of the season.  I could not possibly imagine a worse coach than Boylan and if Pax takes the reins, presumably, he'd play the kids more because he recognizes that developing this team's talent and making the playoffs are not mutually exclusive.  This will enable Pax to make more informed decisions this summer about what he wants to do with his core because I think he has difficulty valuing assets (see exhibit 1: Andres Nocioni) from his office.

By the way, Windhorst is hinting that big things are about to go down in Cleveland.  (h/t: FanHouse)

I bet...
they're going after the birdman.

by Lt.Dan on Feb 21, 2008 9:16 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

Couple things
here. First of all what makes you think Paxon would do a better job than Boylan? Who i think is the worst coach in the league! Secondly this Ben Gordon crap at the end of games is so disturbing it makes me want to puke. No wonder he wants 15mil because the Bulls treat him like he's MJ. Thirdly the Bulls got jobbed last night by the refs on more than one occasion. Whats the deal with those substitutions all game long? My god someone slap Boylan in the back of the head. So much for earning your minutes back BG played like 30 something minutes last night. PS Maybe Kirk should go back to the bench he seemed to play better there. TT was ok last night. Seems like the only one who can get to the line. JN was in foul trouble but i thought he shouldve played through it since it meant more corpse (which is never a good thing). We need to make a trade so bad.

PSS Did anyone see Pau Gasol last night or that guy Kobe Bryant. Man to think we MIGHT/COULDVE/SHOULDVE/WOULDVE have had either of those guys on our team.

Where are those mean boys
from yesterday who made fun of Marcus Williams?  Yes he had a few turnovers, but he was so much more adept with the ball than anyone on the Bulls.

Can we revive the Nocioni for Williams talk?  I know it would scramble our guard picture even more than it already is, but it's only scrambled because nobody's good enough to absolutely stand out from the crowd.  Last night's game showed that even a near-rookie-but-gifted ball handler/passer can dominate the offensive game flow.

by eGirl on Feb 21, 2008 9:46 AM CST   0 recs

Please
don't start the Marcus Williams all-star bandwagon just yet. It was a special Olympics type game with two less then mediocre teams battling it out for the ' World's tallest Midget ' award.

by RogersPark Kris on Feb 21, 2008 10:01 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

The most obvious deficiency
on the Bulls is at point guard, and the best ones in the draft will be gone by the middle of the first round.  Williams would be a huge upgrade for the Bulls.  I say go get him.  New Jersey is silly for thinking that Devin Harris is better than Williams.  If Paxson is smart he'll swoop in before NJ figures that out.

by eGirl on Feb 21, 2008 10:26 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

I like it better everyday
but mostly because of rising Noc-bile.

At least Williams is under contract and gives the Bulls reason enough not to re-sign Duhon

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Feb 21, 2008 10:02 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

KD had a great mini-rant about Noc
in todays behind the boxscore.  Im not up on the whole linking thing, but it basically mocked him for his usual ploy of leaving his man wide open in an attempt to take a charge.

by Mike C on Feb 21, 2008 10:31 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

Every game I watch I get more convinced that Noc
is an awful perimeter defender.  He gets caught out of position a lot, doesn't have the footspeed to both help AND recover, and his guy routinely blows by him.  He also gets posterized quite a bit.

The dude's an undersized four.  Or rather, he's an undersized four defensively, and an underskilled three offensively.  I think he could be a valueable player off the bench, as long as we have a coach with the mind to utilize him effectively.  The combination of Boylan and injuries have not served him well.

by Freethefro on Feb 21, 2008 10:43 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

On a recent telecast,
I heard Jeff Van Gundy say that when a player is a `tweener' you should play him where he matches up quicknesswise rather than where he matches up sizewise.  That would make Nocioni primarily a 4, where it should at least reduce the number of times he fails to get back to his man on the perimeter.

by eGirl on Feb 21, 2008 11:00 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

I agree with JVG's philosophy on that
unfortunately the Bulls have lots o' 4s.

4 more years(on the contract)!

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Feb 21, 2008 11:04 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

As much as the Bulls get killed by dribble
penetration from the perimeter, the more I question as to why the Bulls are so reluctant to try switching to more of a zone type defense. This man-to-man D is not working.

by RogersPark Kris on Feb 21, 2008 11:03 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

if we could trade Noc for Marcus Williams
I say yeah.  Time to start rebuilding this team.  I mean "reloading."  (Or unloading.  As in salary.)

by Freethefro on Feb 21, 2008 10:18 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

I'm tired of all the Noc hate
Sure his contract isn't sensational, but it's not bad either.  It just looks bad when we've got Joe Smith for less.

Nocioni's a solid player and one of the few who constantly tries to do something on this lackluster team.  That says enough for me.  Save Chapu!

If the rest of this team wasn't so inept, we would likely value Noc more....

I would be pissed if we got rid of Nocioni for another hack player who doesn't know how to play under pressure.....Noc is the only Bull who has any fire to him at all, the rest of the guys (Even Gordon) go through moments of complete ineptness.

Noc has his bad shooting nights, and the occasional dumb turnover or bad defensive set, but he more than makes up for it.

The Noc hate here is ridiculous.  He's not a star, but then again he's hardly paid as a star.  He's a solid 6th man and paid as such (maybe marginally too high, but not materially too high).  He's still a starter on plenty of ball clubs too, but is effect in bursts off the bench.

I mean the guy avg's almost 22 pts in 40 minutes.  He's been in a bit of a shooting slump, but he'll get over it, and has played better than avg more than he's had bad games.

by majoyenrac on Feb 21, 2008 12:30 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

base year bad luck
The Noc contract looks awful in its base year at 8.5 mil and the added difficulty in trading BYC contracts.  Is it worse than Hinrich's?  Hell no.  Hinrich is having a poor season, but his contract is a heck of a lot worse than Nocioni's.

My only issue with Noc's contract is the length.  I like a max of 4 years for bench player contracts.  Beyond that and you're getting yourself into trouble.

by NBA Observer on Feb 21, 2008 12:41 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

I agree
With all your points.  I do think Hinrich will bounce back and was in a slump this year (his contract seemed very reasonable and I believe dips down to $8M in 4 yrs, which seems more than worthy if he plays even at his current level--which is the worst level of his career).

Noc's contract is bad in the length and it's also bad because of our almost inconceivable struggles this year (making Noc, someone who could have been a trading chip when we were bad, into an untradable asset this year when we needed to make a big trade since he's got the BYC)....If this team performed like or close to expectations (basically if we were a shade over .500, most would be happy with Noc, that's all I'm saying....

He just stands out because he would be tradable, but isn't due to timing.

Thankfully we made a splash yesterday, I love hearing all the talk that Big Ben's going to be a difference maker and now puts Cleveland in the mix for the ECF......Gooden's been better than Ben this year, and while Hughes is a bad contract, who knows he could be good again in a different offensive set playing without a similarly styled (though far more skilled) James....

I like the trade for the Bulls.....it at least starts pointing us to the future. Having 2 more years of Ben's declining skills and even less motivation, would really have put us in the cellar.

by majoyenrac on Feb 22, 2008 10:06 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

I'd love for four players to be traded...
Nocioni, Smith, Wallace and Duhon, of course. But I'd settle for two of the four in Smith and Duhon. That would, unfortunately, be 55-60 minutes of PT; it's sad that those two guys have been getting nearly 25% of the team's playing time lately. If Duhon doesn't get traded, I would actually be afraid of the Bulls re-signing him. Wallace and Nocioni could at least be useful pieces in sign-and-trades this summer, right? (seems like it)

That OT last night
was an abomination.  I loved watching the "chess" match as Boylan and Frank alternately changed their lineups to put Boki and Noc at the 4 spots.  But my god, did you see the spacing out there for each team?!?

This is typically
The most exciting day in the NBA and the most boring day for Bulls fans.

The most exciting read so far has been  . . .

Riley calling the Bulls for info on Curry

Well so much
for Joe Smith going anywhere.

http://www.thestar.com/Sports/article/305603

by Bulls4Ever on Feb 21, 2008 10:39 AM CST   0 recs

I'd take
Joe Smith for Jason Kapono (Kapono has been rumoured to be on the block).

I think Joe is a better player than Jason--because all Jason can do is shoot, but he's a lights out shooter).

I would make this trade though just because it would be interesting for the Bulls to actually have 2 real shooters on the team, 2 offensive minded wings for once in Kapono and Gordon.

Jason would come off the bench, and free up time for Tyrus.

I agree with everyone's post that that OT was hard to watch yesterday.  The refs didn't help matters with their one sided ticky-tackness, but at the same time the Bulls looked worse than even their record would indicate.....

by majoyenrac on Feb 21, 2008 12:34 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

Kapono is a defensive liability
A major one.  This is why Toronto is shopping him.  The emergence of Jamario Moon and the steady contributions of Anthony Parker make the Kapono signing look at that worse.

I think we can do better than Kapono.

by NBA Observer on Feb 21, 2008 12:44 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

I'm checking like you guys - nothing so far
Thanks for the Toronto update above.  Last night's game makes me reconsider making major changes.  I do believe we need to first hire the coach before doing this.  We need to have harmony between the coach's philosophy and the changes.  Most likely this would occur during the summer.  The next big decision will be who is going to coach this team?

BG just fell down again.  Quick, some one get him a Lifeline medic alert.  Maybe Pax could trade for one...

A deal was attempted
but Paxson was unwilling to part with any members of his core, as well as his promising youngsters.  "While a Lifeline medic might help in assisted some of our more disoriented players, I will not make changes for the sake of making change," Paxson responded.  "I'd like to see what this core can do before dismantling it.  We're in the midst of a playoff race."

Wallace Trade
I just read that the Magic tried to get Kurt Thomas before the Spurs swooped in.  Seems Wallace might be something that they'd consider up front with Howard.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/ian_thomsen/02/21/deadline.notes/index.html?eref=T1

I think I'd actually do this trade to get out from underneath his contract, and to get Noah/Thomas/Gray more PT.  I don't know if the Magic would be willing to take the hit financially, but it seems like they're serious about making a run and want some help for Howard (Bosh did torch them for 40 last night and Van Gundy ripped Howard in the press again).  I'd even take the 1st rounder out if the Magic balked.

Bulls:
Magic 2008 1st Rounder
Garrity
Foyle
Dooling
Arroyo
Augustine

Magic:
Wallace
Nichols

What's interesting
In the SI article, it mentions that the Bulls and Pacers have had little talks.

Wonder bout what?

by Option27 on Feb 21, 2008 11:12 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

I think he meant in general
not talking with each other.

by Freethefro on Feb 21, 2008 11:13 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

I would do this too
I know Arroyo is maddenly inconsistent, but he'd be a huge upgrade over Duhon in the passing department coming off the bench.

Keyon Dooling also can be a flashy, Pargo-esque player without the jacking up all the shots.

I think we'd have to remove the Magic 1st rounder, we easily could have gotten that and more before this season, but we're already fetching a lot for Big Ben considering his production this year....

I don't know if I pull the trigger if I'm the Magic though.....they might want Duhon, who while I bashed above, Duhon might fit their team better as he's more consistent than Arroyo, and that's something they need with their 3 bigs (Howard, Lewis, and Turkaglu).

while I would love
to sit here and imagine for Pax to pull off some miracle in the next hour or two...I'd only be fooling myself.  He hasn't made a mid-season trade since he's been GM, why the hell start now??

Perfect Wallace trade
Bulls get Jason Williams, Ricky Davis, David Lee
Knicks get Ben Wallace
Heat get Eddy Curry, Fred Jones

I ran it on the NBA trade machine last night and it works.  Heat get Eddy Curry, who they for some reason want.  Bulls get 2 expiring contracts and David Lee, a promising PF.  And the Knicks get Ben Wallace, who they pair with Zach Randolph as the defensive ace.

Someone get Paxson on the phone!  This trade makes too much sense.

by danger mouse on Feb 21, 2008 12:28 PM CST   0 recs

Is why would the Heat rid themselves of both of their awesome expiring contracts for Eddy Curry?

According to Isiah.  Every team calls the NYK asking about him.  Teams are even willing to take on one of the Knicks awful contracts just to get David Lee's rebounding.

If Gooden were coming back
I suspect more than just Wallace is going out.  Gooden's not great, but he's a solid player on a solid contract, so why would they trade him for Wallace?

They won't unless they're getting something major back (a pick?, Gordon? etc.).  That's my view anyway.
