Open Game Thread #41: Bulls vs Indiana Pacers
Luol's out. Duh's still out. So it'll be a stretched-out guard/wing group. I'm also not quite sure we have a coach.
Nocioni will start at the 3, and I'd like Thabo getting some minutes sliding over to the 3 after Noc starts the game 0-5 from the field and Gordon checks in.
What I like less is Tyrus as Noc's backup, as although it's always pleasing to a depressed Bulls fan like myself to see him play, I feel Tyrus' best position is the 4. (where he can use his athleticism to an advantage, not just to be competent). If Boylan really wants to go nutty, play Tyrus and Khryapa together, with Tyrus playing the 3 on defense and the 4 on offense, keeping Veektor on the outside where he can dazzle us with his passing wizardry. There's also Nichols and (ugh) Griffin, but if it gets to that point I'd rather watch a misused (or just not ideally used) Tyrus.
Main strategic worry for this game, as pointed out by Mike McGraw, is defending the 3-point line. In case you haven't noticed, the Bulls are awful at defending the long ball (and not so hot at stopping penetration either, hmmm), and their offense sucks so it's hard to make up the quick deficits a hot-shooting Pacer team (with the freedom of not having to incorporate Jermaine O'Neal) could force.
The end of this month's schedule is favorable, but this Bulls team needs to beat its record win-streak of the season (2 games) for me to even worry about such things. And speaking of apathy: if you're not like me, who already got suckered into buying tickets (not for tonight's game though), but still a sucker enough to want to see the Bulls live, discounts can be had!

Yeah, um, I didn't think so.
I understand the motivation, but that irks me.
Bulls are so depressing right now
Are the Indiana Pacers

Wonder what the
You never no
sour grapes?
BTW I remember all the skepticism on this blog about the Celts. It just goes to show: the NBA is still a player's league, and it's still about talent; it's still a team sport--neither Allen, KG, or Pierce won anything before, but together they're great.
Anyway, I wish the Bulls would take the opportunity to make some bold moves. 1) convert BG to pg over the winter, 2) trade Hinrich while his value is still high. 3) trade Ben W to some team looking to make a finals run this year and needing to beef up their bigs (I know, salary issues).

Tyrus starting.
woo hoo
Gordon is out as well?
This is really a prelude to a trade, right? Ok, maybe not.
Right now, they are playing that "Where ... Happens" commercial on the jumbotron.

Maybe this is TT's breakout game
It sounds like
3 mins to tip...
Is there anyone injured for the Pacers tonight?
The guy that
doesn't want to meet up with Tyrus
How to stop the 3 point barrage
Bulls have a real problem stopping dribble penetration from top of the key. And once we see someone drop down to help, that leaves his man wide open for a kick out three. That's what zone defense does best, forcing players to take alot of long jump shots. But this is ok, because I guarantee they would have a better change of getting a hand in someone's face if they were regulated to guarding their designated "zone" as oppose to their usual desperate lung from 8 feet away.
Side not: I fucking hate seeing that little gangster Jamaal Tinsley kill us every time, so how about we try playing some zone tonight!

And there's another one....
6 straight points for the pacers and a shot clock violation for the Bulls to start the 3rd....
BENCH BEN WALLACE!
We have to finish strong.
It is such a plesure to watch TT,Noah and Thabo same time.
Just showed the Bulls doing their team rally yell
That looked wrong.
Too many jumpshots
He brings zero interior offense.

Stacy talking about the Bulls lack of energy
And he's right - the grandpas are doing NOTHING on defense.
And the Pacers just hit yet ANOTHER 3 to bring the lead down to 6.

Still, considering, I was all prepared for a total blowout.

This is surely ugly
Makes me hate A drain, and it's not even his fault.
He and Wallace
Play of the game

Only thing that would make it all sweeter

Kirk is having a big game
by RogersPark Kris on Jan 23, 2008 9:48 PM CST reply actions
good game
Huge games for Hinrich
But Noah can't footworkshootpostplay. Fact! Observable fact! Faaaaaaaccct!
Double double.
Kirk was off his ass tonight
Kirk career high 38!
As of right now,
I think 14/21 should by him at least one night off, but I'm sure someone (Zac maybe?) will propose trading him now while his "value" is high. ;)
Wallace is afraid of him
Wallace doesn't care about him - BW is making 15 mil a year...
What's Noah making?
Wallace would probably just assume NOT have to play.
Noah's gonna be good
Very nice to see the youngsters playing well, and most importantly, being allowed to play through some mistakes. It might have been because Duhon/Gordon were hurt, but when Thabo made some errors, Boylon stuck with him. Very encouraging.
One final point. I don't want to see Duhon again. Ever. Hinrich, Gordon, and Thabo should be our guards. Most of us have felt this way at some point, but this was one of the first times we saw our hoped-for alternative in action. In other words, we've got concrete evidence now: Duhon's gotta go.
And thank you Marionette for letting us know it was on national TV!

Noah and Noch were fantastic too. Lots more of Noah for sure.
A very much needed win. Hope they carry the momentum to the next games.
only back to Lt. Kirk...

Couldn't agree more, Sue,
Boylan sukcs
Boylan reads off Griffins crappy stats
AND
I think the Bulls won tonight despite Boylan, and his coaching is why the Bulls will continue to have trouble stringing wins together this season.
Hold on there
I agree with you totally, however, when it comes to being down on Boylan. This team needs a legit coach with prior post-season success and a track record of developing young talent. Not a lame duck coach whose career depends on scraping into the playoffs by depending on aging vets and flaming out against Boston.
Irony being we might actually MAKE the playoffs if we saw more of the youngsters....

HOWEVER, he has sat Wallace to end games recently, which means more than whatever crap he wants to tell us.

Boylan kills me...
And on to the Tyrus travesty. Prior to the game, I explicitly stated that Boylan was in love with that stupid three guard lineup plus Noce + center. Sure enough, the Bulls played the entire second half in that moronic aligment. To make matters worse, the three guard lineup kept AG on the floor! AG over Tyrus, despite the fact that the Bulls built their lead with TT on the court. TT had four and four in very few minutes, so you can't say he played poorly. He made one mistake.
It's odd, to say the least.
Most coaches go back to what works
That's why Boylan seems like nothing more than a Skiles lacky.
Their coaching style (lack of) and player hatred is identical
best white guy (born in the U.S.) in the NBA ...
He just owned Diener tonight; I'm glad he scored a career high because otherwise we would be talking about his turnovers (still too many late in the game!) It shouldnt be surprising that he plays so well at the 1 with a bigger 2-guard (Thabo) who can play defense and share in bringing the ball up.
This game is auspitious for several reasons,
Yikes
What IS this BB world coming to?
who'd you vote for?

There is no MVP
if you read the question
by bullshooter on Jan 24, 2008 10:28 AM CST up reply actions
45% of the pole on CC
How about if YOU read the statement, and tell me how CC would stand for Chicago Sports?
CC stands for ComCast, and yes - it WAS an MVP question.
Are you 12, or what?
lol

just ignore bullshooter
But anyone who slams other people for what THEY do or say, while acting like their own shit doesn't stink - that is uncalled for and deserves every bit of flak that gets thrown at them in return.
my bad
Actually the poll question

by ScottieCartwright on Jan 25, 2008 11:32 AM CST up reply actions
Then there must have
Comcast never said MVP either
So if you're gonna jump into the middle of this - you should probably know what you're talking about, don't ya think?
FWIW - I have it RECORDED on Tivo - and it says: Who is the Bulls MVP for the first half of the season?
I really doubt there were two separate broadcasts.
Technicality
I'm just going
Here's today's Chicagosports.com
http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/basketball/bulls/
Here is Comcast
http://chicago.comcastsportsnet.com/team-bulls.asp
They both had the same poll the other night too. The one on Chicagosports.com did not use the letters MVP.
You're way off
We were talking about the TV Broadcast, NOT the website.
And no matter WHAT's on the website, what part of RECORDED don't you understand?
It's right in front of me!
Geeeesh....
They do have the same
And that's what I love about you
You actually have the guts to admit a mistake, and then even follow THAT up with an honest apology....
No worries girl. :-)
I never really know what you mean
You come up with some lame-ass excuse for YOU totally missing what was said, by pushing the blame off to someone else.
There's nothing wrong with my typing.
As I said earlier - perhaps you should THINK before you type.
Noc carried bulls for the couple of games
by Azabullsfan on Jan 23, 2008 10:46 PM CST up reply actions
He was more consistent
Not a lot of the other guys are meeting expectations which is why the poll went that way. I think Smith got second on the poll. He is playing above expectations IMO. I don't think many people thought he'd do much more than Brown did for us but he's exceeded that by far.
Until Deng Comes Back
Thabo
Noce
Tyrus
Noah
Bench:
Gordon(minor injury, I think)
-------
-----
Smith/Wallace
Gray
It's really not that hard. I agreed with someone who said mini-ball doesn't work, and the best lineup was, surprise surprise, the one including the two players drafted to share the starting backcourt(Gordon was always a wild card, off the bench and in the rotation).
Originally posted this in the wrong thread.. but
I was disappointed he didn't reenter the game, but I'd rather see him get a solid stint in the 2nd quarter each game than having erratic minutes. And then when his play warrants it, to get another stint in the 2nd half. I'm not saying he didn't deserve it today, especially since we were so shorthanded and our usually consistent Joe Smith was not playing well and he should have been playing instead of Griffin.
But yeah. I hope to see more of him, but I'll be pleased at least for a little while just to see him get out there for a good chunk at a time without being immediately pulled.
