Around SBN: NFL Players Ready To Welcome Gay Teammate

Since the blog's underperforming, I'll shorten the rotation

Haven't had much reason to write, except for pithy comments. But we need a new thread, after all.

Everything plaguing this team has been exhaustedly talked about, no news of any internal change in the interim.  No real trade rumors to chew on.

Some good news: WSCR reported that Deng (achillies), Noc (flu), and Hinrich (sharing a straw with Noc and also getting the flu) practiced on Thursday. The flu buggers are good to go Friday, but Deng's still a maybe. It's been a week since Deng's played but only 2 games have been missed. So a return against the Sixers would be a pretty lucky break, all things considered. It's pretty frightening to see how much they depend on him, but judging by his history he would've likely disappeared in the 4th against the Knicks as well.

Now to get back to the malaise this team has put most of us under, I'll reiterate: It's bordering on lunacy that Wallace and Smith and Noc are playing so much while Noah and Thomas are playing so little. As much as Tyrus Thomas is a lightening rod for disagreement here, Noah's absence is even more criminal based on this season's evidence.

Um...that's about all I got. Here's an interim quote:

Our main objective right now is to win, but at the same time, for us to win, we need our young guys to play well. I shortened the rotation but I can't kill the veteran guys. It's a long season. The last couple of games, the young guys have been playing a little more and they've done well. I have confidence in them. And they need to step up and help us.

Well good that it's recognized that winning and development aren't mutually exclusive, but why did you shorten the rotation then? [Wait, he wanted to 'do something'. Just like me and this post. Oh, the irony. -ed.]

I'd go on but I'd just be repeating myself.

Too bad nobody bought the...
..."these vets can win you championships" trade showcases. I hope Boylan

Give Ben Wallace the Tim Thomas treatment for 2 1/2 years unless he promises to be good or to be "good". Tell Joe Smith he's an MLE and, by definition, can't bitch about playing time. Tell Noc, well, whatever it is one tells Noc.

Play Tyrus Thomas and Joakim Noah and start winning some fucking games already. Sheesh. Why does every Chicago sports franchise suck at what really wins games except for when they get lucky? Why do I care?

minutes distribution
C: Noah 30, Smith 10, Gray 8
PF: Tyrus 48

Noc: deported
Wallace: shot

We win title.

(nah f'real though, Wallace and Smith should be 25 and 20, Noc only as backup SF from now on. I'm with Tyger's anger here. Bullshooter's happy losing to that up-and-coming Knick squad.)

Smith 15
Give me Noah 25, Smith 15, Gray 8 and I'd buy that.   I still think Smith is worth his time in points on offense. Especially where he gets his points and how that pulls defenders out of the lane.  He could give us 15 points in 15 minutes if he knew he wasn't going to have to save gas in the tank for 30 minutes.

'showcase'
I'm losing faith in a midseason trade, unless there's a ripoff to be had. In the offseason Hinrich and Noc aren't BYC players anymore, which will help. Plus they'll have a draft pick they shouldn't want.

But even if it's smarter to wait, how impotent does Pax look having no in-season moves in 4 years?

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Jan 11, 2008 12:35 AM CST up reply actions

When did the rotation shorten?
Maybe one or two games around the SA game.  But the trend is definitely headed the right way.  More minutes for Thabo is the only thing I could nitpick.  TT showed he still needs the right matchups to be effective, but his minutes are on the rise nonetheless.

Wallace and Smith are playing more
under Boylan. Tyrus didn't get PT until Deng got hurt.

And by your criteria, they all need the right matchups to be effective.

It's a shit rotation until Tyrus and Noah get 25+ minutes each, pretty much. Maybe we lose to the Knicks by 8 instead of 5.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Jan 11, 2008 12:21 AM CST up reply actions

your end comment is most frustrating
the thing that sucks the most about the Bulls losing is that if they has just started the season with the following for example (avg mins by name)

C Wallace 30 / Noah 18 (maybe insert Gray vs bigger Cs)
PF Thomas 25 / Smith 18 / Noc 5
SF Deng 32 / Noc 16
SG Thabo 16 / Gordon 32
PG Kirk 32 / Duhon 10 / Thabo 6

and then stuck with it every game baring injuries.  is there any chance the Bulls have a worse record?  I can't believe there is!  The Bulls should have run more as they had 10 man rotation and the young players Thomas, Thabo, Noah all would be much better today as they would have gotten stead mins for the 1st thrid of the season.

So at worst the Bulls have the same record as today but their roster would be more experienced and improved, better players ... or at least the Bulls would have better idea as to who the guys they drafted are.

Today Bulls have crap record and haven't developed or figured out who the young players are ... which is the worse part as that is the future of the franchise in either playing them, using them in trades, and deciding who to sign from their own team and free agents

That's that bothered me the most. The whole plan was scrapped after 6 games and it's only gotten worse both in winning and development.

Playing TT 25+
without the right matchups is a recipe for the lottery.  Maybe that's what you want.  But the team is about 4 games out of the 4th seed and they haven't gone into their patented second half, beat up on tanking teams run yet.

bah
Tyrus outperformed his elders last year, and he had something to do with the 'patented' second half.

What's the right matchup? If it's "not at the 3", I agree. At the very least you have to play him to find out how he's matching up that night. I really think other teams have to worry about matching up with him.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Jan 11, 2008 9:29 AM CST up reply actions

You say it's settling for the lottery.
...and mediocrity this year. I say your way settles for mediocrity year-in, year-out. Players get better by playing. They don't expand their possible "matchups" by guarding the likes of Andres Nocioni and Joe Smith in practice. Sheesh.

Have you not figured out yet
That Wallace will clench up again if they play him the way he "merits".  Clearly they're trying to keep him happy and in the game, at least for a few weeks, so they can (hopefully) get rid of him.

by Sports2 on Jan 11, 2008 7:41 AM CST reply actions

If Arn Tellem
met with Paxson on the subject of firing Skiles so the Bulls can make the playoffs as was reported, then if the Bulls continue to play poorly it's time to trade Wallace.

I know Tellem is close to Reinsdorf and he would find anything other than a playoff appearance as a disappointment.

I don't know if it is good or bad, but Tellem also represents Gasol and McGrady.  If either player does come to the Bulls, were still left paying off salaries negotiated by a very good agent.

by NBA Observer on Jan 11, 2008 9:23 AM CST up reply actions

If the Bulls aren't going to start Gordon
why not give Thabo a chance??  I know, he isn't playing well offensively, but he can't be worse than Duhon.  Plus, it gives the big SG that we desperately need and have Kirk guard his own position.  It gives Thabo some confidence which he clearly lacks and stops Duhon from launching 3's without a chance of going in.
The problem with the Bulls is their "plan" keeps changing after a couple of games.

That would be the right track.
Thabo, though he may not be perfectly suited to play the 3, is at least better suited for it than Tyrus.  I'm glad Boylan realized that after only a one game experiment.  My guess is that he was attempting to get pt for TT, and saw a possibility for it with Deng out.

Sometimes I wish he'd just ask us first...of course, not that he'd care what we have to say :)

Thabo better 3 than 2
or for that matter, it would be better if he was still in Europe.

by exult463 on Jan 11, 2008 3:31 PM CST up reply actions

What do you think?
Do you think Duhon's lack of hitting shots is responsible for losing close games?

I think his shots fall eventually.  I too want to see more Thabo time, but I think that comes now at the SF position and to open the 2nd half.  Duhon settles this team early through limiting turnovers and earning assists.  He does this without passing to Ben Gordon since he's on the bench.

Today the Toronto press is reporting on the Raptors interest in acquiring a point guard.  Let's hope Paxson's phone is working.

by NBA Observer on Jan 11, 2008 10:57 AM CST up reply actions

I do think
Duhon's inability to knock down an open shot is somewhat responsible for losing close games.  I want to see an actually NBA SG starting games for the Bulls.  This gives the Bulls with a strong defensive lineup to start the game and then come the chuckers (Noc, Gordon) to provide offense when they come in.  I still think Gordon should be startnig, but if thats not gonna happen, i think Thabo starting is a better alternative.  Duhon is a NBA backup pg, not a starting SG.  Let's for once play the players for the reason they were drafted.
PG: Hinrich, Duhon
SG: Thabo, Gordon
SF: Deng, Noc
PF: Smith, Thomas
C: Wallace, Noah, Gray

they've ascended to 27th in offense
after being last most of the season. Congrats are in order, I suppose.

In all fairness
You could tell Gordon was starting to heat it up during the San Antonio game (his last start before hitting the bench).

by RogersPark Kris on Jan 11, 2008 11:57 AM CST up reply actions

he scored 18 in that game
and wasn't even the leading scorer.  He's done a lot better since.
Nocioni-Khryapa in '08

by bullshooter on Jan 11, 2008 12:01 PM CST up reply actions

It's not just about how many points he scored
in that game. If you look at the game tape, you can tell his jump shot was fluid and his on court appearance was confident.

There's a visible difference in the Gordon who lights it up and the Gordon who clanks it off the back of the rim.

It was obvious he was going to get better. Bench or not.

by RogersPark Kris on Jan 11, 2008 12:08 PM CST up reply actions

they've been scoring more
because BG is more comfortable coming off the bench chucking!!  They've also been giving up about 110pts while replacing the defensive liability with supposedly a better defender.

actually
they've scored 103.6 and given up 100.6 since the SA game.  They only time they didn't score 100 was against Sac and only given up over 100 three times, all losses.  But believe whatever you want.
Nocioni-Khryapa in '08

by bullshooter on Jan 11, 2008 11:59 AM CST up reply actions

I believe they played ass teams
and any lineup with Duhon and Wallace isn't good. And we get a guaranteed 12 minutes each game of it. Plus Boylan seems to have picked the lock to Skiles desk drawer and found the tiny-ball manifesto.

This all reeks of overthinking. Is he managing the game? facilitating? calming influence? Duhon sucks, shouldn't be playing.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Jan 11, 2008 12:11 PM CST up reply actions

You're right they've been scoring more.
The Duhon, Deng, Hinrich, Smith, and Wallace lineup scored 115.2 pts/100 poss, but they gave up 122.9 pts/100 poss.  So either Duhon made the defense incredibly bad or more likely they were playing crap teams and neither team was bothering to play defense.  Either way, Duhon starting isn't any kind of success.

by Scotter on Jan 11, 2008 12:34 PM CST up reply actions

i've heard
we are playing 4 on 5 with Wallace in the lineup.  It's more like 3 on 5!!! Thabo isn't the greatest offensive option but he is a guard than can attack the basket and disrupt the opponents normally best offensive player (normally a SG)...
I vote for Thomas to play, play more and play regularly.-Sam Smith

by tyrus4prez on Jan 11, 2008 11:43 AM CST up reply actions

I think
having only two players out of five who can have a reasonable chance of hitting a shot on the floor at a time does hurt us. How can't it?

If you look at who has been starting (Hinrich, Duhon, Deng, Smith, Wallace) only Deng and Smith have nice shots.  The rest of them are clunkers.  I can't see how that doesn't hurt us.

At least Thabo can finish a layup, guard taller guys, and get steals.  His long range shooting sucks, but Duhon can't even go in strong for a layup consistently and is undersized to begin with.  I wouldn't mind seeing Thabo take Duhon's starting minutes.

by cranscape on Jan 11, 2008 12:03 PM CST up reply actions

Me too
I think Thabo needs to start, eventually.  I don't think he's ready yet though.  He's turned it over a lot in the time he's had this season.  And Duhon is starting because he doesn't turn it over as often as he dishes out assists.  Does he need more minutes to get better?  Probably.

by NBA Observer on Jan 11, 2008 2:21 PM CST up reply actions

My opinion is
that we don't have anyone (but arguably Gordon) who offensively or defensively deserves that spot on the line up.  If we had someone better even Hinrich might be benched.  We obviously don't.  People are playing that bad.  Since we have to fill it though I am questioning why it should be Duhon.  Neither he or Thabo have good games going at this time, but looking at the starting line up as a whole it isn't unreasonable to suggest Thabo as he has pieces others do not.  With Thabo and Hinrich out there we might have one decent player between the two of them to start the game and I still think that is better than we got with Hinrich and Duhon.  Offensive duds for the most part and short as well. And we are only talking the starting two to four minutes of the game before they put in Gordon anyway.

It is interesting how everyone is worked up about the PF/C positions when we seem to be shallow in the back court even more.  While we are not playing our deep bench (Noah, Thomas, Gray) we simply have no deep bench for the back court.

by cranscape on Jan 11, 2008 4:51 PM CST up reply actions

Problem is
the player we most want off their team is...their point guard.

That trade for McGrady would be great
I know he's often injured but like they said, it would have to include Ben Wallace and Pax might talk the Rockets into thinking Ben Wallace next to Yao would bring him back to old form.

Ben Gordon would also be included, therefor abandoning that horrible last shot selection problem the Bulls always have

And Tracy has 2 seasons left on the contract so even if it doesn't work out, won't the Bulls be able to cut loose on that salary when LeBron and Wade both are able to opt out?

by Option27 on Jan 11, 2008 10:29 AM CST reply actions

It's a wide gap
Ben Wallace is owed 14.5 and 14 mil.
McGrady is owed 21 mil and 23 mil.

I think moving Wallace helps get more PT for the kids, but it also admits that the club is taking a big risk to still make the playoffs.  McGrady only gives you 68.3 games per season.  He only plays 34 minutes a night.  He's not the solution, but I think he could do things for us that no other guards on the roster can do now and that is get to the free throw line and put opponents in foul trouble.

Considering what is happening right now to this team, how close are we to becoming just like the Grizzlies are today?  They too were a playoff team with 3 solid seasons.  They didn't win ANY playoff games, but they still made it even in the West.  Chicago might be a Memphis clone in the East.  You just wonder how much longer they can continue to make the postseason and then falter.

move ben wallace and kirk
and then the receiving team can throw in an extra player.
Mr. Poison and Mr. Inconsistent moved on one trade, now that's progress!

I know it's not popular to suggest Kirk, but I'm beginning to see he's not going to lead this team because he's too self-absorbed in trying to justify himself as opposed to coming outside of himself, taking charge (on the court, in the locker room, etc) to win basketball games at all and any costs.

Therefore let him and wallace become stars on some other team...

It seems as if the only discussions revolving around Hinrich from everyone is "whether his shot is on or off?"  We have (like Kirk) reduced the captain and pg position into only a field goal statistic?  A PG/Captain should represent so much more by example and consistency on the court, leadership, motivations and be a verbal leader dedicated to winning...

It only takes one real committed leader (pg or wing position player) who has competitive basketball skills to motivate this group of role players.  The quest is to find that player..

T-Mac or Paul Gasol? I wouldn't bet on it.  Now if Conley is part of the Gasol package, he might be the diamond in the rough?  How be it, he's young, 6'1" (but his vertical if off the charts)and it seems it might set the Bulls back to retooling some?  But he's a true leader and pg, with skills and has a competitive fire burning inside, so his youth really can't be despised.  Keep Gordon on the bench, get a starting SG taller than 6'3" who has a high basketball IQ, shoot the 3 or score, can play stellar defense, rebound, slash and drive to the basket in that order of priority.

Conley will compete on "some team" equally with the future young all-stars or elite PGs in Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Tony Parker, Brandon Roy and Rondo.

I've only come to this conclusion because we didn't draft Brandon Roy who I dubbed as the savior to both Ben Gordon and Kirk Hinrich.  Kirk and Roy starting and Ben coming off the bench would have formed one of the best backcourts in the NBA.  It didn't happen, now Kirk is somewhat of a liability without playing together with a D.Wade or B.Roy type who assumes some PG duties.
Unless Kirk can be paired with this type of player who also has the leadership potential he's just a decent role player.

this was mentioned before
by matt, but i was in agreement then, and i still am... the bulls should go after corey maggette.  if we could have a back court of kirk and maggette and bring gordon off the bench, i believe the bulls would start winning more games.  is maggette the chosen one to save the bulls?  no, but i think he would help tremendously, and i would expect him to excel in chicago since he has always wanted to play for the bulls.  plus, a combination of deng and maggette would be pretty fun to watch and tough to beat.  give more mintutes to ty and noah to help them develop, and if they responded well, you could be looking at a damn good team now as well as the future.  at 28, maggette would be the old man in that rotation.

thanks for the reminder.  in a dream world pax would be able to deal noc straight up, but we would have to throw in du and probably thabo.   i cant imagine it being too difficult for pax to swing some sort of deal.  remember, we are talking about the clippers.  i think that deal is 100 times easier than getting tmac and cheaper and better and more cost effective etc etc

by Conor on Jan 11, 2008 3:33 PM CST reply actions

The worst part about this season is that
I am having very little fun at the games.

The entire UC crowd is dazed by the team's soporific play. Even when they are winning, they aren't much fun to watch. The little guards scurry about the perimeter in a frenzy, circling and circling. Early fouls amass. Luol cuts horizontally across the lane, or rises up for a mid-range jumper. Wallace grabs a rebound, misses a layup, attempts an ill-fated fade away, occassionally gets a block, sometimes disappears. In the last thirty seconds of each quarter, the Bulls get outscored by 12. A forlorn cry of "Kobe" echoes in the far reaches of section 322. Gordon nails a three, dribbles off his foot, tries that step back jumper at the elbow for the fiftieth time. Team scores fifteen in a quarter. Hinrich pouts, fires up his patented one on five jumper in transition, looks incredulously at the ref, plays drive and kick. Cuppy Coffee beats Dashing Donut. Three minutes to go in the game, Bulls tie it on Nocioni's lone made FG. They don't score again and lose by 7. Sigh.

The whole experience is tainted by the knowledge that this team isn't going to win a championship. Everyone expected further progress after last year's playoff win over the Heat. Instead, we get regression and inconsistent mediocrity.

NBA basketball, played well, is the most graceful, explosive sport in the world. The Bulls have somehow transformed it into a predictable exercise in hardwood somnambulism.
