Draft wishes - - Tiago Splitter and all

I am in an optimistic stupor after the Knick loss last night looking forward to a lottery pick.  A fun thing for me to do is to study DraftExpress in anticipation of our pick.  Tiago Splitter seems to fit the Bulls to a tee.  He is an inside scorer, intelligent, coachable, avoids fouls, difficult to move out of the post, and a good rebounder. Since we could be, I am praying, in the 7 - 10 range, we will have many choices.  The following could be available 7 - 10:

1- Al Horford
2- Spencer Hawes
3- Yi Jianlian
4- Roy Hibbert
5- Hasheem Thabeet
6- Tiago Splitter
7- Josh McRoberts
8- Corey Brewer
9- Aaron Grey
10- Brandan Wright
11- Tyler Hansbrough
12 - Marc Gasol could be available as a second round pick

I cannot allow myself to go to the small but wonderful possibility of a 1-2 Olden, Durant pick.  That is for another diary.

Aaron Grey & Josh McRoberts
will drop to mid or late first round unless they have big workouts at the draft camp.

Also, Phoenix has three first round picks (assuming they get Atlanta's #1).  Right now, the other two are 24 and 30, they'll most likely sell one and hopefully Pax jumps right on it.

I find it incredible
that Atlanta gave up their pick in the Joe Johnson deal.  It is protected 1 - 3 and I think they are now at 4.    They really overpaid for JJ.  Agree, we could get someone decent if Paxson is able to move up to 24 or 30.

Which really has to make you wonder
why Atlanta is trying so hard to win games.  There is the side of me that really and truly respects them for it, but there is that other side that is definitely thinking "no wonder they've been bad so long - what idiots!"  They were down big early last night and still pulled out a meaningless win that could cost them a high lottery pick.

weve got some 2nd rounders we could trade
plus cash....PHX would like that the 2nd rounders to bank players overseas or releive some of their cap room by letting marion go and scout well in the 2nd round....not to mention we can always go the "give SA a bunch of 2nd rounders that will turn into amazing players or soon to be forgotten for a solid late first round chance" route

Having two bigs from the draft
going into next season appeals to me.  It gives us an option to find out who develops and fits into our system.  If they both develop there is always a need someone will have for a big.

Oden, Hawes, Noah, Horford , B. Wright
I hope the Bulls won't pick Grey just because he's a "BIG"  I want the most talented player.  If I'm picking between Grey (who will be a bust) & Corey Brewer, I'm taking Brewer (T. Prince) every time. The previously mentioned (under subject) are the only bigs I prefer from this draft.

by GranvilleWaiters on Apr 7, 2007 8:47 PM CDT up reply actions

No
Yeah, but the Bulls don't want Aaron Grey or McRoberts.  First Grey, was exposed during the stretch and into the NCAA Tourn.  He is not athletic, he reminds me of a poor mans Will Purdue.  I mean, Purdue was good in his limited role, but we need more than that.  McRoberts, as the man, took Duke to nowhere.  If the Bulls are looking Big man, he is not a true BIG.

by GranvilleWaiters on Apr 7, 2007 12:43 PM CDT up reply actions

gray
aaron gray is not only unathletic, he has very poor touch around the basket.  he is basically just big and a decent rebounder.  he's going to drop way down.

I didn't mean just one of them
I just meant they could buy a pick and take someone else in the first round.

Doesn't have to be a big.

I'm pretty sure that
Atlanta's pick is Top 3 protected.

That'd be too much to think of Oden in a Suns jersey.

What about Durant in a Suns uniform next season?
Very interesting scenario brought up by Sports Guy and also covered in The FanHouse.
As many of you know, the Phoenix Suns will most likely own the right to Atlanta's pick in this years draft. They received the possible pick as a part of the Joe Johnson sign and trade deal. The pick is top 3 protected, so the Suns will only receive the pick if Atlanta draws anything below three in June's draft lottery. With the Hawks having only the fifth worst record in the league, it looks as if Phoenix will most likely end up with the pick. The question now is what they will do with it. Conventional wisdom says they will try and draft a Joakim Noah or Corey Brewer type player. But I'm of the belief that they will try and package the Atlanta pick, their two other picks, and Shawn Marion in order to move up and pick Kevin Durant.

Very interesting scenario.  It seems plausible given the rationale they provide later in the article.

by paxson43 on Apr 7, 2007 2:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Not a chance
There is not a chance that anyone in the top 2 will trade that pick.  Oden & Durant are franchise type players.  No GM would be silly enough to trade that #1 or #2.

by GranvilleWaiters on Apr 7, 2007 5:20 PM CDT up reply actions

NO
Nobody is trading away Oden or Durant.  Marion is good player for Suns but he's not going to have impact that Oden or Durant may.  Nobody knows for sure of course but the belief is that those 2 are guys who can lead team to championship

by NY Chicago Fan on Apr 7, 2007 7:45 PM CDT up reply actions

depeneding on who wins the lottery
and what contract situation marion will have i think its a no brainer...you get a proven all star, 3 first rounders, and maybe even drop some salary off the possibility of taking a chance on a college kid

by milesgmsu on Apr 11, 2007 3:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah...
Except no one is trading away Oden or Durant. And the Suns are trading Marion to get rid of an expensive, long term contract, not take new ones on.

by Paxson Jackson @ Blog a Bull on Apr 11, 2007 3:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Paxjax; of all people i expected you to be on my
side

marion, a proven all star, is due 16 Million for one year, and 17 M player option....for any trade to work the salaires have to work....that means a team can esentialy dumb aq terrible contract and pikc up an all star

then your looking at a #4 pick, 24 and 30.....three first rounders and an all star.....a gm would be crazy not to do it.

Oden and Durant have proven nothing excpet that they can put up gaudy numbers against xcollege kids...hell durant cant even carry his team to the sweet 16 and odens only consistency is his inconsistency. Is it likely that one of these two could be a HoFer...perhaps.  But not often are you given the chance to dump salary, take the three picks, and get an all star to save your mposition of passing up ont he next jordan.

Will it happen? of course not. No gm is smart enough. But for a team like Memphis, Milwaukee, charlotte, indy, portland, or sacto it makes sense...much more sense than taking a shot on oden /durant

by milesgmsu on Apr 11, 2007 3:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Phoenix is getting rid of Marion
because of his contract. This isn't an oppurtunity for another team to dump salary.

by Paxson Jackson @ Blog a Bull on Apr 11, 2007 3:28 PM CDT up reply actions

uhoiiughiluh
That doesn't mean the Suns couldn't use salary relief (which is the cause of Marion trade rumors), and they're not going to dump Nash or Amare.

Splitter
doesn't get good offensive reviews on ESPN.  I haven't seen him play so I can't really say for sure.  However, Hawes has been slipping into the 6-9 range in some scenarios and reportedly has a very strong low post game.  If the Knicks don't win tonight, I think we have a shot at the 6-8 range.

Knicks tonight
Milwaukee may be w/o Redd, M Williams, Skinner, Bogut, Villaneuva, and Simmons tonight.  This game is going to be a challenge for the Knicks to lose.  If, a big if, the Knicks lose this game we will be in great position for the draft.

JUST SAY NO to SPLITTER
Splitter is not the answer.  He's kind of like Joakim Noah, in regard to not coming into the draft last year, and being exposed.  Scouts have said he does many things, but nothing exceptional.

by GranvilleWaiters on Apr 7, 2007 12:49 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree
It seems almost everyone looks great on YouTube, but when I watched clips of Splitter I thought he looked rather pedestrian - at least for 7-footer.  He doesn't have much in the way of hops, but he is a big body.  I see him as a nice rotation/garbage guy, a blend between Verajao and Doleac.

If the Bulls end up taking a big, I hope it's another athlete.  We starting to run teams out of building now, and I wouldn't want to see things slowed down.  I'd be fine with Horford or Wright, although both will be gone by the time we pick (unless we get lucky).  Noah seems like a glue guy, not a real dominating individual player.  But I think he'd fit in nicely with the Bulls lineup.

Hawes seems like the only one who has real low post potential (although I haven't seen him much).  But I wonder about his athleticism.  Hansbrough's too small; his inside game won't translate to the next level.

im not doubitng you but...
if you assume the bulls have at any given time a 2% chance at the number one seed; they're only going to get the #1 draw 20% of the time during a 10 pikc sequence...liekwise it takes about 35 picks in a sequence to avg 1 #1 pick

for top three over a 10 draw sequence your gonna get it 9/20 times

so either your disproiving the law of large numbers, or your underesimaitng your spins

The lottery is looking better and better
As of Friday's NY loss, Bulls are tied at 8th with Portland and Sacramento.  Minnesota is only 1 game ahead for the 11th spot, and Indiana only 2 games ahead for the 12th.  However, Philadelphia in the 7th spot is only 1 game back, Seattle only 1.5 games back for the 6th, and Charlotte only 2 games back for the 5th.

Of the teams in the 5 to 12 range, New York has the worst record (2-8) over the last 10.  Portland, Philadelphia and Charlotte are all at .500 or better over the last 10.  On top of that, after its game against Milwaukee today, New York's next 5 games are against playoff teams from the East, who are mostly still jockeying for seeding position.  Portland's closing schedule is also pretty brutal, but Philadelphia has games left against ATL, IND, BOS, and ORL.  Plus, none of Portland, Philadelphia or Charlotte seem to be in tanking mode at all - seems more like they are young teams that want the push of finishing well to build off of next year.

Anyway, I wouldn't be at all surprised to end up drafting 5 or 6, which of course also improves chances in the lottery.

What happens if the Bucks get Oden or Durant?
There is an appreciable chance that it will occur.

The Central is already brutal. The Pistons have gone to four straight Eastern Conference Finals and have one championship. The Cavs are a champion-in-waiting because they have LeBron. The Bulls are an ascending young team. If the Bucks add Oden or Durant to Redd and Bogut, they'll be an immediate contender.  The division would have two major superstars, as well.  I'm afraid the Bulls modest talent would get lost in the shuffle.

"modest talent"
That's a misconception.

by Paxson Jackson @ Blog a Bull on Apr 10, 2007 1:59 PM CDT up reply actions

agreed
No reason Bulls can't be better next year.  Core all reaching thier prime and rookies will improve plus they are getting another lottery pick to add to mix.

I never saw Spencer Hawes play so I can't endorse but sounds from reviews like he can score in post and is great passer.  Seems to be something the Bulls could use so I figure the Bulls will look at him.

Draft is always tricky, so many don't pan out, but Bulls have had good track record so we just have to hope they find someone they like.  I'm more and more leaning they need to pick a C as whatever risk is there, that is really what is going to put them over the top if they get a decent big.

by NY Chicago Fan on Apr 11, 2007 6:24 AM CDT up reply actions

Whoever gets Olden or Durant could be a force to
contend with.  Certainly Milwaukee but this includes Memphis or Boston.  Olden seems like he could be a dominate inside force in a few years.  Olden, Gasol and Miller or Olden, Pierce and Jefferson make intriguing combinations.
Please beat the Knicks

Hansbrough
I think that was a wise move on his part. This draft was loaded with bigs and with another year of ACC hype under his belt he could improve his draft position, even if he is going to be the next Mark Madsen.

I'm a big UNC fan...
And you could not be more right about that kid. He works hard, but he has no athleticism. His greatest asset is his ability to get on the offensive glass, and even when he does he sometimes struggles to finish at the basket.
I think B. Wright will follow in big brother's footsteps and go pro. And it just would not have made much sense for Lawson to make the jump. He needs a jump shot.

by kingj41 on Apr 11, 2007 11:37 AM CDT up reply actions

What if
We picked up someone that memphis wanted, then gave them that pick (plus they probably will get either oden or durant) plus we give them chris duhon (it was either him or thabo, and i rather keep thabo then a second hinrich, just to keep things varied), malik allen, and maybe even nocioni for Pau gasol and some garbage.

After all pao gasol, who is probably not liking memphis too much (the fans, and the fact that his team actually has the worst record at the moment!) wants out, and if he wants to go to a winner, well, with his help we might be able to get eastern championship. And then there is also this guy called Kev Garnett...hes old (30, so he has like maybe a good 5-6 years on him) but he might throw us WAY in the mix for the next couple years.

im trying hard to become the next kirk hinrich, therefore im doing nothing more than being the next chris duhon.

by piccolomair on Apr 11, 2007 11:21 PM CDT reply actions

On the Contrary
I believe it would be a good offseason move. We can pick up a guy using our knick pick and give it to memphis. Ehh ill try to break it down...

Memphis (most likely will get a 1 or 2 pick in the draft) gets Durant. We pick up a big for memphis. We then give memphis the big we picked up, plus nocioni, duhon, and malik allen. We get gasol.

Its win win. To get rid of gasol is to admit to rebuilding. Memphis gets a real good point gaurd in duhon (he is a good pg by the way), they have a nice shooting gaurd in foye, they get a pottential star in durant, they have an versatile nocioni who spark games, and they have another top ten big man. That is like the perfect rebuilding team isnt it?

Gasol has got to be traded in the offseason for sure because, if no other reason, his team just got the worst record, this has gotta fuel the fire to take gasol out of memphis.

For the bulls, gasol might be the very thing we need to get over the top, plus...we dont lose any of the big three (hinrich, gordon, deng).

Its a move im sure john paxson would think of making. At least i think its a good move...

im trying hard to become the next kirk hinrich, therefore im doing nothing more than being the next chris duhon.
