Open Game Thread #9: Bulls at Los Angeles Lakers

The Bulls looked like their old selves Saturday night, especially Ben Wallace. But I'm not celebrating his complete return, as anytime Tim Thomas starts at power forward you know it's not a very tough rebounding squad.

Luol's out for tonight and a few more. He looked pretty awful in the 2nd half Saturday, so I'd rather see him sit than see him 'grit' it out, as we've all seen how that's playing with Wallace. I guess that Nocioni signing is coming in handy if Luol's out for an extended time, because Thabo has clearly received no credit problems getting that mortgage for Skiles' doghouse. So Noc will be at the 3 and the well-rested (8 minutes last night) Tyrus Thomas will be back starting at the 4.

The Lakers are without Ronny Turiaf, so look for my guy Brian Cook to be chuckin away more than he should. Go Illini! The Lakers bench has actually done a lot of damage this season, and either through ineffectiveness or inactivity, the Bulls have very few reliable options on this supposedly deep squad.

So with Wallace looking ok, and Gordon having a big night, we're all still waiting for Kirk Hinrich to stop being the worst starting point guard in basketball. With no Luol Deng, tonight would be a good time to start. Especially since after a night in L.A., Duhon may have some flu-like symptoms.

I got a feeling
Hinrich for three will be heard at least 4 times tonight....i dont know, i had a feeling about the detroit game, i had a feeling about yesterdays game, i dont have a feeling of "were gonna win" tonight, but i do have a feeling of a spectacular hinrich performance. I hope my feelings are as accurate as i want them to be.

Ciao (ill be watching the game after work, so around 10:30, hope they fair well)

im trying hard to become the next kirk hinrich, therefore im doing nothing more than being the next chris duhon.

nothing
He didn't play much last night because Nocioni was posting up Tim Thomas, hitting shots, and drawing fouls. With the exception of Duhon, Skiles likes to dig deep to replace injured starters rather than mess with his second unit. That's how I remember it works anyway.

I read a quote from Skiles
somewhere about thinking he needed to play the vets more and for longer stretches.  I'll see if I can find it.
"They had me do a psychology test and I asked Coach Skiles if that affected his coaching. He laughed and said, `No way.'" (Joakim Noah)

by wjb1492 on Nov 18, 2007 8:20 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Here it is:
Following the game, Skiles suggested he might follow a new guideline for his playing rotation. Second-year forward Tyrus Thomas did not play at all in the second half.

"Ben (Wallace) played so well. The front court played so well," Skiles said. "I've got to look at the way we've played from the beginning of the season and consider maybe I should have the veterans out there a lot more and the younger, developmental guys maybe shouldn't be out there as much."

http://www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=80151&src=150

Hopefully he didn't mean it quite like it sounds, although I think I'm grasping at straws to even bother looking for anything hopeful in that statement.

I don't like the sound of that quote. How are younger players supposed to develop with little to no playing time?

by bleargh on Nov 18, 2007 8:34 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Match ups
are going to be a nightmare tonight.
The Lakers are gonna look to pound the ball inside.    Wallace and Thomas need to avoid getting in early foul trouble.
What's scary is that Kobe doesn't usually have back to back off nights.  So I think he'll be a little more aggressive tonight.
That could mess up our guy's confidence but we'll see.

by Outsidergua on Nov 18, 2007 8:08 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Hmmm,
Skiles didn't know that Luol said he might not play this week. He said that is the problem with the players in the NBA now, saying they don't think I'll play this week for whatever reason. He said they would put Lu through some tests and evaluate him then. So maybe Lu will be back sooner then he thought.

Tyrus has been a bright spot
in a dismal year.  Unless he did something absolutely oulandish that we don't know about, I can't see why the guy can't get any burn.  He blocks shots, defends, gives us a different athletic dimension.  Instead we have to watch the 0/3 "savvy" of "seasoned vets" lugging their considerable paunches around the court.  Vile.

by Freethefro on Nov 18, 2007 9:21 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I keep thinking it has to be Skiles BS
Because you know Sam Smith would have made sure we all heard about it if Ty did anything to get benched.

At least Sefo seems to have solved some
of his early offensive offensiveness.

I'm just going to imagine that Ty is a little sick or something tonight, and for some reason Skiles doesn't want to share that info.  Don't care if it's completely made up, it's far less frustrating than thinking how much Ty would be helping the team.

It's called Tyrus withdrawal
Primary symptom is rational irritation with the coaching staff.  Secondary symptoms are a slightly irrational dislike of A-Drain and general irritability.

Because our two most athletic bigs

Mihm
Was 7'2" at the draft.  Unless you mean off the ground, Ben Wallace is 6'8" generously and would be hard-pressed to go higher.  That's 6 inches.  And on a bum ankle.

Btw, Kirk needs to stop thinking so much, I think.  He's in quite a shooting slump, after we predicted improvement in that area.

Tuesday could be really ugly
if they can't get some offense going, because you have to figure the Nuggets are going to score.

And with the open looks they're missing tonight, you can't count on the lack of defense to do much for us.

I still feel bad for the guys, though - they're better shooters than this, and they've got to be as frustrated as we are.

I can't believe I used to like Skiles....
...he is a freaking dumbass who seems more intent on settling scores and over-thinking stuff, rather than keeping it simple and winning. Our team can certainly do with more talent, but having a tighly wound coach like Skiles isn't helping, he can'yt seem to get these guys to relax.

I used to like Skiles
I think we all did at one time.
But the team has grown up now and he doesn't seem to have what it takes to make the transition from good to great.

I'm glad...
I'm not the only one who thinks Skiles has been terrible this year. I'm not excusing the bad play by the players, but Skiles has been horrible.

He keeps with line-ups that are doing absolutely nothing (i.e. see beginning of 3rd quater). Frankly, he looks completely lost. The players aren't gelling, and the coach is lost.

The team seems to be regressing, and Skiles solution is a 3 guard set. But, hey, maybe playing Nocioni more will solve all the problems.

Nocioni was actually a bright spot tonight
Too bad he hardly played when it mattered...when the Lakers won the game in the 3rd.

I am going to vent.
I know Luol is out tonight, which is a major mitigating circumstance, but I am quickly losing patience with this team.

They aren't just poor offensively, they are fucking horrendous, they are intolerable. They are so bad offensively that they aren't even enjoyable to watch at this point. That's how bad it is. It's hard to even bear witness to their ineptitude. Just viewing the game on TV makes me feel clumsy, disorganized, and slow. They don't even remotely resemble an NBA team on offense. Two points in the first SEVEN minutes of the third quarter? What?

It doesn't seem that anyone on the roster is capable of driving to the basket with success on a consistent basis. The guards have inexplicably regressed during the offseason. Gordon and Hinrich are supposed to be budding stars. They look like bewildered CBA rookies, especially Hinrich. Turnovers, poor shooting, dumb fouls, bad defense. And it isn't as if the rest of the team has been any better than the duo of doom.

The team actually executes so poorly on offense that it is comical at times. It's a perpetually looped 24 second blooper reel.

I know many of you seem ready to blame Skiles. Maybe he deserves some blame, but his contribution to this mess has been marginal. You simply can't win in the NBA if you don't have players who can score the motherf'in ball with something approaching regularity.

It's early in the season, Deng is out, its the dreaded circus trip, I have to believe the team WILL play better, but god damn, they look awful. At least be competitive.

Yeah, I keep trying to be positive
because there is a lot of season left, and they could start looking great at some point.

But seriously, to go from a 1 point lead at the half to a 28 point loss?  That's really tough to stomach.  The second half was just hideous tonight.

it's garbage. Skiles should worry about 'developmental' players (especially if he considers Tyrus one, which is absurd) because they're the ones who will get this team places, not his old favs. We've seen where they can get us.

Look at this fucking fourth quarter.
Look at this fucking lineup.

I am actually having flashbacks of sitting in an empty UC night after night in 2000, watching nameless, overmatched scrubs trying to compete with NBA players.

(Yeah, I realize this team is nowhere as bad as those teams, but this quarter simply reminds me of the futility of that era.)

SUCK IT SABAN!

by 1958ChiTown on Nov 18, 2007 11:00 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

How about some of those lineups in the first half?
When the game was Chicago's for the taking, Skiles had Gardner and Griffin in, with Tyrus nowhere to be seen. And I was holding out hope that he wasn't playing TT for obvious reasons (sick, injured, whatever) because, as the coach, he should want to put the best players out there, right? I assume he wants to win games! But, when the game was already pretty much lost, he throws Tyrus out there to the wolves after he'd been sitting for over half the damn game.
Factor in Nocioni's playing time being inexpicably cut after a fairly good first half and I, well, I just don't get what the hell the coach is doing.

by bleargh on Nov 18, 2007 11:06 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

It looks like sabotage
Skiles does't want to win,and did everything to lose the game.Maybe he's trying to show to Pax how
bad this team is,in order to get Kobe.

To have a shooting percent of less than 40%
coupled with terrible defense is a classic recipe for losing a LOT of games.

It is very conceivable that this team never DOES wake up and ends up having a terrible year...

Detroit lost, too
Woohoo!  We maintained our 3 1/2 game deficit in the Central.  Way to go, Bulls.

Good thing not showing up for a half and getting totally blown out doesn't carry an extra loss penalty or anything.

I understand why it's popular to bag on Kirk
right now - he's certainly not playing well, by any stretch of the imagination.  But historically he's much better than this, and I still believe he'll get it turned around.  It's worrisome, because I don't recall him having a shooting slump quite like this before.  But I think it would be like trading Tyson - he'd be fine to great somewhere else and everyone would start moping about another lousy trade.

hinrich
seems always to be on the verge of breaking out.  He  is always up to the same old crap though: turnovers, quick fouls, horrible shooting stretches, weak ability to finish in the paint, and complaining to the referees. If this season doesn't turn around and turn around quickly, I am going to start thinking that everyone on the bulls was just hyped up.  The young bulls or whatever crap.  They are getting older and older but not better.  I also have issues with Paxson draft picks and signings.  The Pax we trust thing is insane.  What is it again that makes him better than other GMs?  Maybe i am just angry and ranting but this is starting to look more and more desperate every night.

unless
Your smart and trade him this offseason when he and all the bulls have some value. The worst part of this season is knowing the bulls are stuck with this team for the forseeable future. Fire Skiles now. TT was the second pick in the draft he should be getting 25 to 20 mpg easy. Either Pax is not that good of a gm or Skiles is a terrible coach.

I'm now officially panicking
Matt said it above, but good teams almost never get blown out this badly.  Maybe you can dismiss one bad game as a fluke, but when you lose by 30 points twice in 8 days, that means something. Even when they got off to a bad start last year, they never got blistered like this.  I know Deng was out, but still, the Lakers aren't really that good.
