Open Game Thread #1: Bulls at New Jersey Nets

[Thanks to user joemoses for tonight's game thread. -Matt]

Well everyone here we go, not only is this the start of a season that some predict will end with our Bulls in the NBA Finals, but I am the first guest host of the Open Game Threads.  I like to call myself "mini-Matt".

Since I get to have the first word, here goes:

Kobe:  I don't give a ......

I sure hope that Skiles implements Sefo for defense today.  I watched him last year against Carter, Redd, Kobe and loved what he brought defensively.  The Nets and the problems with size that the big three bring are a perfect test.

I would also like to see Ben G. get somewhat lower minutes tonight and see Sefo, Deng and Kirk on the big three for most of the night. Du cannot guard Kidd and he better not be on the court at the same time as Kidd. Save him for guarding the backup PG (who I guess is Darrell Armstrong and not Marcus Williams [injured].)

I predict a win tonight.  Kirk 18-6-5, TT 12-8-3 blocks, Smith 12-7, Deng 22-9, Ben G 16-3

Tonights Game
I feel so wierd about the game tonight.  With all the Kobe talk, BG and Deng's contract up in the air.  An interesting time to be a BUlls fan...

by tyrus4prez on Oct 31, 2007 4:44 PM CDT reply actions

With all the trade rumour hoop-lah (pun)
I am just hopeful that NO one on the team is listening, watching, or even concerned about any of it and can find it within themselves to just focus on TONIGHT -
They need to take care of business at hand...
Is it spring training yet?

by Bluelou on Oct 31, 2007 4:48 PM CDT reply actions

Which is why I don't like trade RUMOURS...
regardless of the benefits or not of any said trade, until it actually becomes reality, all rumours do is distract - and since it's da Bulls that are in the middle of the biggest talk in the NBA, it serves as an advantage to NJ - 'cuz all THEY gotta think about is winning....

What about Wallace?
He's supposed to start, although I suppose it is a game time decision.

This will be a good test.

Anything new on the contract situation?

Opening Night

A Win tonight in hostile New Jersey

MVP: Luol Deng 40 pts, 10 rbs

As Bulls blowout (Not as bad as Miami last year) a slow, old Nets team.

Your Prediction
"I predict a win tonight.  Kirk 18-6-5, TT 12-8-3 blocks, Smith 12-7, Deng 22-9, Ben G 16-3"

This is probably a accurate prediction, but Kirk statistics (or emphasis on his statistical improvements in ppg) probably would serve the Bulls team better if his points and assist were more in line with.  Kirk 10-6-13, TT 18-8-3 blocks, Smith 18-7, Noah 10-6, etc, etc.

The Bulls with many BIGS that can't create their own shots effectively, therefore Bulls need a PG to be a more effective setup assist guy.

by exult463 on Oct 31, 2007 5:02 PM CDT reply actions

I have a feeling
that there are too many distractions for them to concentrate tonight. I'm hoping they can put them behind them and get a win tonight.

we're all downplaying the nets
they own us, and kidd maintains his irrational hatred of our little general (i doubt that name will catch on wiht skiles). Although more isnt there anymore, and rjeff kidd and carter are all a year older, maybe we have a chance. but i agree with vegas with us being 2 1/2 point underdogs

by milesgmsu on Oct 31, 2007 5:27 PM CDT reply actions

You have to use
a live wire to get Vince Carter to play defense.

Random Thoughts on BULLS VS NETS
It will be fun to watch our "Big Three"

Hinrich
Gordon
Deng

Versus

Kidd
Carter
Jefferson

I still remember last year when Kidd single-handedly raped the Bulls, even with Carter having a bad shooting night...

Speaking of which, Bulls have guarded Carter well before, so its just a matter of containing him to only 20pts or so.

Kirk! Shut that wife beater down!
But still J-Kidd is a beast.

Gordon shoot well!
I have you in like 2 or 3 of my Fantasy teams!

Im split 50-50 on wether the Bulls will win or lose tonite...

I dont expect Wallace too play heavy minutes due to his ankle.

We better watch out for Magloire, remember that he was an All-Star before and Kidd usually brings the best out of "decently good" players...

Even if they do not win tonite, I expect the Bulls to outmatch and destroy Philly on Friday >:)

Slow starts from Skiles
Pissed off Gordon=many missed shots
VC and Kidd hate the Bulls
Bulls never beat the Nets

it's possible, but im not getting my hopes up. I can't even listen/watch.

Comcast Sports Net is not in the NIU dorms, and the bars are all full of halloween situations, not showing games tonight. As far as listening? well you tell me why ESPN radio 1000 isnt playing the game online. and i am sure not paying NBA to listen.

...Hinrich is more important to this team, and his constant fouling is more problematic for the team. "Having" to play Duhon and Sefolosha together is not cool. (and I don't buy that he only fouls so much because all the refs have it out for him.)

Downpoints of the half
  • lots of fouls. (especially quick 2 on Tyrus)
  • lots of Duhon (byproduct of the fouls, but still)
  • lots of HongyDraw.

IMHO
the DUMBEST posts are the ones that thought the Bulls could win in overtime.

HAVE YOU WATCHED THE GAME? The Bulls had one chance, and the two Bens blew it. I'm sorry, but when J-Kidd and VC hate your team and want to win as much as they do, piled onto how hard it was to even have a shot to win, piled on to how the Nets are already the Bulls toughest team to beat, piled with the fact the Nocioni is the only one who can hit a three tonight since Gordon's streak...

you thought they could win in OT? AT NJ???? yeah, ok...

This loss is on Skiles.
It's too redundant and almost irresponsible to pin the loss on playing Noc over Thomas, but I can't see another excuse. The Bulls aren't making shots, true, but that means you need rebounders. Nocioni is not a rebounder, and save for a few towards the end, wasn't hitting shots either. Thomas is a rebounder. He should have been playing. Stupid, stupid Skiles.
Yes, of course.

by tyger1147 on Oct 31, 2007 9:28 PM CDT reply actions

are you kidding me?
Nocioni is the reason the game is in overtime and their only offense in it.  He even played really good defense on Jefferson on that lucky shot he made(I thought he traveled).  If Thomas was in they'd just leave him and Big Ben wide open and thered be no space for our jump shooters.

by JSlakov on Oct 31, 2007 9:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Wrong.
You didn't watch the game. They weren't leaving Wallace or Thomas wide open the whole game. Why would they have started now. The jump... ugh, why try?

they need a low post threat. that is the difference in jump shots falling, not kobe being there.

we knew they would probably lose. the Bulls may be an eastern conference finals worthy team, but the nets still own them.

SAY NO TO THE CHICAGO LAKERS!

by hongydraw on Oct 31, 2007 9:31 PM CDT reply actions

It's only one game, so ultimately you can't draw
many conclusions from the result. That being said, it was a really disappointing game not because we lost, but because we looked like a carbon copy of last year's team. Too many turnovers, a huge free throw disparity, an inability to win a close game in the fourth quarter (that last regulation possession by Gordon was horrendous), a penchant for becoming a static jump shooting team on offense, etc.

The game even followed a familiar pattern:

Bulls go down big.

Bulls rally to make it close.

(Some scrub from the opponent has a career game.)

Bulls lose down the stretch when their offense goes into a lull and the other team's playmakers sink a few big shots.

Heck, even the players on the court down the stretch changed very little from the last two years: Hinrich, Gordon, Deng, Nocioni, and Wallace. No Tyrus, no Smith, no Thabo, etc.

Hopefully this is anomoly, not the continuation of a pattern.

by 1958ChiTown on Oct 31, 2007 9:33 PM CDT reply actions

That happens when your second best rebounder...
...hardly plays.

It won't show up in the boxscore, so few people here will see it, but I think Thomas and Wallace had really good games.

And Hinrich really fucked the team over. Duhon and Sefolosha were horrible today. You'd like them to be better, but you can't count on it. If Hinrich and Thomas play 20 more minutes and Duhon, Nocioni and Sefo play 20 less... the Bulls win by 5 or more.

Yes, of course.

by tyger1147 on Oct 31, 2007 9:43 PM CDT up reply actions

thats why they need to play better
at the start of the game.

Let's hope the Bulls never have to play the Nets
In the playoffs.

The Bulls tend to commit a lot of turnovers, and nobody can take advantage of that better than Jason Kidd.  It's silly to panic; the Nets just have the Bulls' number.

by Bluelou on Oct 31, 2007 9:40 PM CDT reply actions

Yep
Plus, already having made a double-digit comeback in a building they've struggled in (13 straight losses, right?), there's no need to play for OT. I could see if it were a home game or something, but come on: Take a chance, make a couple of passes, and try for the regulation win.

yes to kobe
deng was sort of dissapointing me..nice plays of course, but...he missed alot of free throws and stuff...and before someone says he was getting hammered...all the greats get hammered by the other team.  I suppose deng just has to get used to that idea.
im trying hard to become the next kirk hinrich, therefore im doing nothing more than being the next chris duhon.

by piccolomair on Oct 31, 2007 9:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Complete Change of topic
Anyone see the Hinrich Manuever in affect??? Seriously, that move seems to always work, hinrich must do it far more often.

I think the last possession in regulation was wierd, i knew the idea of the play, let ben gordon do what he wants, i just thought...deng should have set a screen, followed by hinrich setting a screen for deng, deng continues to slash, hinrich runs to a nice open spot...throw thomas in instead of noch for the chance for a massive putback. Gordon then at least could have taken the shot, thrown a pass to deng at the cut, thrown a pass to a (if he was)open hinrich. And with ben and ty2, and deng near the post, a putback was more possible.

The last play was more of skiles letting gordon do what he (wishes he) does.

I do think this is just the first game of the season and really means less, the comeback showed maturity on its own, so that is something to look forward to. New jersey had to work for the win, so we dont suck, it was a great game.

If kobe was on our team, depending who was left, i think we would have won just due to kobe can match up real well against anyone on the nets...however that doesnt mean he will match up well against all teams.

As a blogabull rule, there should be a ban of throwing in the towel as a fan in the second quarter. We shouldnt throw in the towel until the bulls throw in the towel, and unlike the heat (see last years whuppin) the bulls dont throw in the towel until the last buzzzzz...just take a gander at thomas at last five seconds of the game.

TO those who went to the game, LUCKY!!!! some games people leave early cuz the outcome is decided, and this was one you would sit through because until the last 15 seconds, there was a chance....

im trying hard to become the next kirk hinrich, therefore im doing nothing more than being the next chris duhon.

by piccolomair on Oct 31, 2007 9:46 PM CDT reply actions

Skiles had a great game until...
the last six minutes of the fourth quarter.  He had real rotations going on, especially with Wallace, Thomas, and Smith up front.

Then he lost it.  The three guard lineup again?  Against this team?  The one thing Skiles hardly ever does is offensive/defensive rotations.  I thought he could have been switching Thomas and Nocioni out more.  If anyone made the team look like last year's it was Skiles.

by Scotter on Oct 31, 2007 9:47 PM CDT reply actions

it was Skiles.
Sorry to say, but I think you're right.
And Skiles might never get over his "run home to mama" approach either, which could be ugly unless or until the Bulls get away from these close, nail biter games.

"OMG NAO WE NEED KOBE!" -_-;;;

The overall game was iffy for the Bulls but Imma say those refs tonite were fucking retards.

Also Jefferson killed from the arc.

I think the game would of been more to the Bulls favor if Hinrich stayed out of foul trouble (However this is due to with those mental refs)

Someones needs to tell those comcast guys to shut up about Kobe.
