Bulls clinch 7th seed, face Miami in first round
Alright, now that we know who the Bulls are playing, some initial thoughts:
- Miami's health will be a huge factor. Having Zo out would eliminate a major problem for the Bulls, as the Heat are at their defensive best when he's on the court. Plus we need not mention our favorite season buzzword, "undersized". Jason Williams and James Posey also just recently came back from injury, so who knows at what degree they're truly back.
- The Bulls have contained Wade fairly well, but I have a hard time considering that a trend after only a couple games. Hinrich will have his work cut out for him.
- The Heat have a pretty weak perimeter defense, so if the Bulls' guards attack (and again, not having Zo out there is huge) instead of settling for jumpers they can do damage. But that also means when they kick the ball out the spot shooters have to stay as hot as they've been the past couple weeks.
- I'm not too worried about the Heat having a 'veteran' bench. Walker, Payton, the dueling Anderson retreads...they may have playoff experience but are they perhaps too old to keep up with our plucky young Bulls? Besides, they've all got playoff
- STAY. OUT. OF. FOUL. TROUBLE. Especially Chandler. While the Bulls have a dearth of top-notch big men, they do have guys who won't kill them if they only play in spurts. And yes Luke Schensher will likely get to use his fouls against Shaq as well.
- That said, Shaq is not what he used to be. He is fouling far more this season as in years past, so maybe the tables can be turned and he can be put on the bench for long stretches. His (and Haslem's) rebounding prowess against Chandler and Nocioni will be interesting, and critical.
- And remember: The Bulls have Nocioni, they don't!
Any breakdown really comes down to one thing: staying consistent on offense. We know the defense and the effort will be there, but these 12 point quarters the Bulls are known to have once (or twice) a game will lead to deficits the Bulls can't expect to come back from in playoff basketball against a more talented team. Gordon, Nocioni, Allen...all these guys have to be shooting well.
Alright, now lets have a pow-wow and break it down together. I'm talking to the Jones' Thursday night and want something substantial to say (for once)!

a little hollow
Love the site. Been reading it obsessively since last year but this is my first time posting. And I just want to throw some cold water on things (as if it's needed!).
Before we all get excited about our "momentum," it's worth remembering that the last bunch of teams we beat were not exactly dying to compete. NJ had clinched their spot; ATL had one of their best ejected; WSH on some level knew that they could still clinch 5th later on; MIA had clinched; and ORL was playing for pride.
I don't think it would be a stretch to say that this late in the season, we got lucky with who we faced when.
Now I'm not saying we're not playing extremely well - we are. But it has been a while since we've played a team that really HAD to beat us, i.e. playoff-level basketball. As Matt alluded to, I'm just hoping Ben and Kirk can remain hot from the outside in this type of atmopshere.

good point
That's why I mentioned not buying into the whole 'Wade has trouble against the Bulls' story that's happened this season.
I will say though that the Bulls did win games against Philly. Indiana and the Wizards this month. No they haven't beaten any elite teams lately (that had anything to play for). But they've at least stepped up against comperable teams.

We need Noc
Could you picture the utter surprise on D-Wade's face if he did?
I could see him saying something like "that white boy's crazy!" as Shaq buries Pike in ice under the floor at the UC.

My take (ie, I agree with Matt)
I've been really encouraged during this recent hot streak by Hinrich and Gordon's drives to the basket. It's still not as often as it should be nor are the calls always in their favor, but I think they popped in their copies of Air Time and learned something. I think this really helps Matt's sixth point of getting fouls on the Big (Fat) Guy. As Matt pointed out, Williams is not a great defender insofar as he calls it "other-team-with-ball part of the game" and if Hinrich doesn't attack the rim it's only because he didn't want it.
Wade is going to score, but let it be on jump shots. Once he gets into the paint, he draws fouls and messes our beautifully laid plans up.
And finally, I don't like their bench even though Udonis is like Etan Thomas: a marginal player that has played very well against us in the past. We're bringing Deng, Duhon, and Chandler off the bench as far as we know. Walker is playing well currently, but I get the feeling Gary Payton takes many pills to be able to walk in the morning and rest is garbage bag.
And finally, Jannero Pargo will play a huge role. He needs to take his towel waving and words of encouragement for the guys on the court to a new level during this post-season. He shouldn't see more than 10 minutes a game if God is merciful.
Time for Nocioni to recapture his former playoff voracity and be showered with name chants!
Matt, I guess I basically agree with you.

Sam Smith picks the Bulls

I agree with him
Yes, they need a bunch of things to break their way, but why couldn't they? Shaq isn't 100%, neither is Wade. The Bulls are a physical team. They need to hit their shots (I'm looking at you, Ben, don't disappear this time again, k?) and not fall behind by huge amounts like last year.
Heat in 6, but the Bulls will make it interesting.

Experiencing that kind of intensity on what seems like every possession can only mean further growth for next season...

Breaking it down
1. Maintain Free Throw Equality
The Bulls have gotten killed at the line this year. As a team, they've attempted the 5th fewest free throws in the NBA (24 FTA/game). To make matters worse, when they happen to make this rare pilgrimage to the charity stripe, they're only making 73.7%. Shaq & Wade alone get to the line almost 19 times a game. To win in the playoffs, the Bulls need to manufacture points from the free throw line and that means attempting AT LEAST 30 free throws a game. We can't have one of those games where the Heat are 24/36 from the line and the Bulls are 10/14. Also, let's not forget the most important part of getting to the line - MAKING THEM!
2. "No 3rd Wheel"
Remember during the MJ Era when someone other than MJ/Pippen went off? It was one of those games when Horace, Pax, Kukoc, Kerr, even Longley would put up 20+ points? When that happened, the Bulls were even more unbeatable. I believe the same is true with the 2006 Heat. Shaq & Wade will get their points, but the Bulls have got to prevent Payton, White Chocolate, Posey, Haslem, and ESPECIALLY Antoine Walker from exploding. And yes, I'm talking to you Nocioni who seems to have a tendency to leave his man wide open in the corner for open 3's.
3. No "off days" for Gordon
This team is going to need some serious firepower to win. The Bulls best scorer can't forget to show up one night. Hinrich will likely spend plenty of time guarding Wade and can't be expected to carry the team at both ends. Gordon MUST be good for 24+ ppg. I'm not talking about going all Kobe and busting for 50. I'm just saying we need consistency from a somewhat-inconsistent player. Hopefully the goose egg Gordon laid in the final game last year still stings a little and he's ready to make it up to us.
4. "The Shaq Rules"
RUN!!!! No, not from him, AT HIM! In the 2004 NBA Finals, the Pistons effectively ran Shaq out of the game. I suggest that the Bulls employ a similar strategy and try to get the ball up the court as quickly as possible. The Bulls have the youth and personal to do it. Hinrich runs an excellent break, while Gordon spots up and Deng/Noc fill the lanes and finish. In other instances when the Heat are set up defensively, I hope the Bulls engage and attack Shaq relentlessly. Shaq is averaging a career high 3.9 personal fouls/game. As he's gotten older, Shaq has shown a real ineptitude to rotate defensively. If the Bulls settle for jump shot after jump shot, Shaq will play the majority of the game and the Bulls chances of winning will plummet. However, by going straight at him with our "Four Headed Monster" (Sweetney/Schensher/Harrington/Chandler) hopefully we can limit Shaq to 20-24 minutes/game and dramatically improve the Bulls' chance of winning.

Besides, how could Pargo ever top the Game 5 he had last year vs. Washington? It's like he channeled his inner-MJ and made every shot.

Pick and Roll Game
The most important thing to watch is can we get Shaq and maybe Mourning out on the perimeter trying to guard our pick and rolls. Recent games have Hinrich and Gordon making drives to basket when big guys switch to them.
I look for Deng to have a great series. His play has been incredible the last few months and Miami does not match up well against him.

Before anybody says anything, I know this isn't entirely on subject. However, as we get amped up for the playoffs, isn't it important that we talk a little about how much ass we kick? it's like the Venezualen National Futbol Team stumbled across a donkey farm in the middle of a drug-addled furor. WE. KICK. ASS!!!!!

Hi! (and some nice cut and paste work)
I was reading an article by Marc Stein on ESPN.com, and it made me really excited for the future of the Bulls, regardless of what happens this postseason.
--
A well-connected assistant coach told me earlier in the season that the hard-driving Scott Skiles was wearing on the young Bulls to the brink of losing them.
You have to conclude now that my coach friend either heard wrong or that Skiles can still get a response from these players no matter how hard he pushes.
The Bulls, after all, didn't simply uncork a 12-2 finishing kick to finish at 41-41. With absolutely zero fanfare -- I honestly can't remember hearing anybody mention this -- Chicago has climbed all the way back to No. 1 in the league in field-goal defense, allowing opponents just 42.6 percent shooting from the floor. Ranking No. 1 for two straight seasons, in a category coaches treasure, is an achievement in itself. Especially when general manager John Paxson freely admits that the Bulls still need an injection of "size and athleticism" if they want to be considered serious candidates for a return to the NBA's elite.
Which leads, of course, to even better news: Chicago already had the best consolation prize it could hope for -- New York's No. 1 overall pick in the June draft thanks to the Eddy Curry trade -- whether or not it rallied into the playoffs. Add that to significant salary-cap room in the offseason and the Bulls have one of the most enviable futures on the NBA map. No matter what you think of their first-round chances against Miami.
I didn't know that the Bulls had become #1 in that stat again. Pretty sweet. I can't wait to watch these playoffs.
