Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

Open (preseason) game thread: Bulls midwest barnstorming tour

Bulls vs. Sonics today in Lawrence, Kansas, the collegiate stomping grounds of Kirk Hinrich and the Sonics' Nick Collison.

It's on TV, who knew? 1pm Central on WGN. I was going to relay to you the good news that since it was a Sunday afternoon Wayne Larivee would be busy doing a Packers game, but they have their bye week. Wayne probably would've tried to do both games anyway, media whore.

And speaking of football, Bears don't play 'til Monday night, so there's no excuse not to gather the family around the TV for Bulls preseason action.

A few thoughts
  1. Luke Ridnour is a chump.
  2. Sefolofsica, Red?
  3. Naismith may have invented basketball, but not the shot clock.
Will the Ginobili/Nocioni era ever be over?

Hello?
Is anyone watching the game?  The internet, from what I've seen, isn't giving stats, they are only providing a score.  I can see they are winning but I was wondering how things were going.  How does everyone look?  Does anyone stand out?

by kaboom on Oct 15, 2006 2:56 PM CDT reply actions

Sorry
I must have posted my comment after your's.  Does anyone look better today than last game?

nba package
my schedule says the game should be on but its just a blank screen...im so hurt cause im listening to the radio broadcast and its such a good game. For anyone watching, can u give some updates? whos playing good, whos playing bad, how does kirk look?

by Option27 on Oct 15, 2006 3:36 PM CDT reply actions

NBA Package
We won't get any games on the package until the 31st (opening night).  The package doesn't cover preseason or postseason games.

Enjoy Matt's Blog and KC's articles until then.

youre wrong
i watched the first preseason game as part of the package, and they have been regularly showing preseason games on for the last week. This game was also shceduled to be seen but for some reason, the screen was just black

I dunno
my friend that has Direct TV was already to watch the game yesterday and when it wasn't on she called Direct TV and they said it was never their plan to have free preseason games on. She was not happy. Maybe the one you watched on Wed. was a fluke of some sort.

Which market do you live in?
I've had the NBA League Pass since the 2001-2002 season.  Only regular season games are aired in the Las Vegas market.  No pre-season, no post-season, and certainly no post-game (like you lucky Chicagoans enjoy on Comcast).

Thinking I was getting the short end of the stick (after reading your post), I called the fine folks at In Demand.  Turns out, we, in the Las Vegas valley, ARE getting the short end of the stick.

Essentially, it depends upon the service contract that your cable provider has signed with In Demand.

yeah
i live in the los angeles market. yesterdays game was scheduled to be aired, wierd how they would say it wasnt supposed to be. It was on the schedule guide for a couple days.

by Option27 on Oct 16, 2006 12:08 PM CDT up reply actions

i think
it was on chicago's wgn. It wasnt on the direct tv WGN...i checked

by Option27 on Oct 15, 2006 4:14 PM CDT up reply actions

WGN
Just to be clear... there are 2 WGNs, "local" and "Superstation". Local is what most in Chicago see. Superstation is what most elsewhere see. About half of the regular season WGN games are on Superstation.

by tofferr on Oct 17, 2006 2:19 PM CDT up reply actions

That's why
I have NBA League Pass.

Tyrus looked good
He hit a game tying shot at the end of the 4th. He was rebounding well and had a key block when seattle was making a comeback in the 4th quarter.

Also, Thabo was better today, I believe it he had 9 points, don't know how many rebounds or assists (I counted 3 but I didn't see the entire game) and he had a couple of blocks as well.

Schencher looked horrible, he tried to do a sky hook and it was one of the worst shots I've seen in a while. Also, when seattle was coming back at the end he played horrible defense, he tried to take a charge and a guy walked around him and scored a layup. Then he got a couple of fouls late in the game as well. I saw him drop a couple of passes too.

Andre Barret looks like he has a chance to make the team maybe. He's showing he can both shoot and drive and he's not afraid to take a big shot. He's quick and he can jump pretty high too.

Hinrich played great in the first half along with fellow KU alum Nick Collison. But I didn't see a lot of Hinrich in the 2nd half.

Rookies
Thabo did redeem himself a bit in this game, although his jump shot is still shaky. But his defense and ballhandling looked good. The thing I liked the most was that he attacked the basket, and with his length (channeling Jay Bilas here) he can finish well.

Thomas can sure jump high. That block on Wilcox was pretty incredible. And he'll be an asset defensively guarding taller wing players, he handled Rashard Lewis pretty well tonight.

and the big preseason star, Khryapa, showed off some 3-point range today.

Great recap
tyrus is amazing

by bleacherbum @ Blog a Bull on Oct 15, 2006 4:21 PM CDT reply actions

I didn't see a lot of either
But I saw the Body (that felt weird saying that) go in for a little and he showed he does have some post moves and made a basket, he also pulled down a couple bounds. But i only saw like a couple minutes of him before the half ended.

B-jizzle (even wierder) looked like his defense was noticably better than last year. He was in his man's face and put pressure on the ball. He looked smooth in his shot and it looked like he was just playing like he was in practice, like he wasn't having a hard time getting a shot off or anything. I didn't see much of either of these guys but thats what i saw

I hate
the WGN station we get with our Dish Network. Dammit!!!

Sounds like it was a great game. The game tomorrow night isn't televised either is it?

Thabo
Thabo played an ok game, he had 5 assists but also 4 turnovers i think. He has nice ball skills, I think his jump shoot will come. Khryapa did a great job, nice defense too. Luke Schensure is too slow and weak. I hope the Bulls kkep Barrett, he can make the open shot besides it wouldn't hurt havin another guard. Ben Gordan looks like more of a complete player this year and not just a jump shooter.

Thoughts on Luke...
Or second thoughts?

So far it seems to me that Andre (the Non-Giant) Barrett has been outplaying Luke the Giant in the pre-season.

Maybe it's unfair to compare the guys-
one's an Ent and one's a Hobbit....

But with only two roster spots left, one of those guys (or both, possibly) needs to go.

Anybody else have some thoughts about Luke Vs Barrett?

Why the fuck is there no box score available?
Do they live in caves in Kansas?  Are they still using an abacus there or something?

there is no video either.

Strange
If I hadn't watched part of the game on TV, I'd be wondering if it ever really happened.

At least
you got to see the game.

I read that Nocioni is back in Chicago to attend to a personal matter and will not be with the team tonight.

Yeah, we live in caves in Kansas...don't know how to broadcast a basketball game...Hey jackass, there are more KU games broadcast nationally than there are Bulls games.

so maybe there isnt footage?

by Option27 on Oct 17, 2006 12:30 PM CDT up reply actions

no tv coverage
It doesn't appear the Grizzlies air pre-season games, so unless a Memphis TV sent someone to film some of the game, there won't be any highlights.

Lots of teams don't have pre-season TV coverage.

Sports Nite
on CSN aired some clips last night so I'll check and see if I can find some.

Sunday observations
Red is still saying Kree-rop-rha.  Wayne said Hee-roh-rha once immediately after the PA pronounced it correctly, but he want on to alternate between the 2 pronunciations.

At the end of the 2nd half there was much debate about how much time was left on the clock... what no one noticed is that the clock stopped at 1.0 for at least half a second.  The Bulls ended up getting 0.2 to shot (which is not enough time for anything more than a tip).

Also, in the original post Matt made fun of Wayne.  I certainly appreciate ANY announcer bashing, I feel we have the worst in the NBA, certainly the worst for a big market.  However, I have decided this preasason that I like Wayne much more than Tom.

by tofferr on Oct 17, 2006 2:28 PM CDT reply actions

Wayne is a traitor
I will never forgive him for going over to the green side. Wayne left the Bears for the Packers when the going got tough well its not over Wayne
