I don't know if it's clumsily worded speculation or an actual report, but Larry Zgoda -- who covers the Timberwolves -- included this nugget in his latest piece about the possibility of a Love-to-Cavs trade:
And if Flip Saunders gets greedy and tries to use the Cavs and Wiggins to leverage Chicago -- if they lose out on Carmelo Anthony -- into giving him the deal he has sought from them: Jimmy Butler, Taj Gibson, Doug McDermott and the rights to Nikola Mirotic.
So . . . that's pretty much the entire friggin' cupboard of assets right there (sans draft picks, I guess). I've been all-in on getting Love (or any superstar, really), even at the expense of two or three of the above-mentioned assets. But ALL of them? That would leave the roster something like this:
- PG: Rose
- SG: Snell? Kevin Martin (more would need to go into the trade to make the money work)? Mid-level guy?
- SF: Dunleavy
- PF: Love (Boozer?)
- C: Noah
- Bench: Bairstow, Smith, DJ? Nazr? Jimmer?
I don't know, y'all. We'd stay over the cap and so have our exceptions; we could still try to find a landing spot for Boozer and get players that way; we could amnesty Booze and get a couple guys that way; and we'd still have at least some of those unguaranteed contracts to move around. So there would be possibilities post-trade for some minor shimmying of the roster.
What the hell -- let's do a poll.
