Hey look, Derrick Rose opened his mouth and words came out on the record! It had been quite some time since we've heard from the injured star, but now we have some real-life quotes from an interview with Yahoo! Sports' Marc Spears. What is sure to get the most play is the stuff about Rose not recruiting Carmelo Anthony (it's not his job, okay), but I already touched on the recruiting thing a few days ago, so I don't want to waste anymore time on that.
What's more interesting is Rose saying he's not sure about participating in the Team USA training camp that begins in late July:
"I still don't know yet," Rose told Yahoo Sports at the Drew Gooden Foundation Basketball Camp on Sunday. "If I'm feeling right and the time is [right], for sure I will go out there. My body is responding good, but you never know.
"Right now, I haven't really thought about that. I am just worrying about just trying to get back every day and I'm really taking rehab one day at a time instead of trying to think about competing."
Most have expected Rose to be ready to go for the Team USA camp, which will come about eight months after undergoing surgery on a torn meniscus. Rose has been playing 5-on-5 for about a month and a half, and by all accounts, everything is going great. The Bulls recently said they plan on Rose participating in Summer League practices with the team, which would then lead up to Rose's participation in the Team USA camp.
But Rose's comments throw a little doubt on the situation, even if it probably is just a little. This is likely just another episode of "Derrick Rose Says Stuff," especially because he also said this later in the interview:
"I think I was ready a long time ago," Rose said. "Right now is about just getting all the wrinkles out. I've been playing for a long time, even though nobody has [seen it]. I want to just step on the court and I want people to see that I'm the same."
So he was ready to go a long time ago, but he's not sure about participating in the Team USA camp? Got it. There was also a mention of B.J. Armstrong and his role in the decision-making process, which does make me cringe a bit. But whatever. I still expect Rose to participate in the camp, although I'm not all that confident in him actually making the team and playing in the World Cup in August/September.
