2014 Bulls Offseason: A Kevin Love Proposal

Enough words have been written about Carmelo Anthony becoming a Bull this summer. I wish to focus on a different superstar who may be available. This superstar is younger and more efficient than Carmelo. And arguably a better overall basketball player. That's right, it's Kevin Love.

Now, Mr. Love is not a free-agent, nor is he specifically on the trading block. However, the Timberwolves must be aware of the writing on the wall. This writing says "Kevin Love is leaving next summer, so trade him now and get some assets or you will lose him for nothing". The Bulls have more than enough assets to make a trade happen.

Before I propose a trade, I wish to make one thing clear. We would have to give up A LOT to get Kevin Love. So what I propose is not a no-brainer from our end. In fact, it's not totally clear to me whether we would even be a better team by executing this trade. That's the point of the fanpost. A poll and a healthy discussion will follow!

Bulls Receive:

Kevin Love

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Timberwolves Receive:

Taj Gibson

Rights to Nikola Mirotic

Bulls 2014 #19 pick (via Charlotte)

Vet Minimum to make salaries match (Mike James perhaps)

No one freak out. I love Taj. You love Taj. But to get a player of Kevin Love's caliber, one must actually trade away valuable assets. This is a trade that both teams would have to think hard about, which probably means it's a somewhat realistic trade.

So, if we do a Kevin Love trade, here's my proposal for the rest of the offseason.

With the #16 pick, I think it is obvious the Bulls should take a wing scorer. Nik Stauskus would be ideal, but he may not be available. I would be happy with McDermott as well, but he's likely gone by then too. Maybe Zach Lavine? He's got loads of potential, but there's no way he'd play much at all next year. Anyway, a wing who can shoot threes is a must.

Here's the two crowd-pleasing moves. Amnesty Boozer. Let Hinrich go. If Hinrich wants to re-sign for the Vet Minimum, I guess fine, but then Thibs will play him because of GRIT and then we will suck more. Thank you for your service Kurt, now please go away.

Maybe our backup point guard should actually be good, perhaps DJ Augustin. I'm sure he'll be somewhat expensive, but under the new cap (expected to be around $63 million), I think we can afford him. I'll prove it later.

Nazr shall leave, so let's upgrade that spot too. How does Jordan Hill or Emeka Okafor sound? I think Jordan Hill would sign for the Mid-Level Exception. That would be nice.

Let's re-sign Jimmer to the Vet Minimum because I went to BYU and he can shoot threes and might not be horrible.

Alright, so if we execute a Kevin Love trade, here's our lineup for next season. The minutes each player should play is the first number next to their name. Next number is salary for next season (in millions).

PG Derrick Rose 34 $18.86

SG 1st Round Wing 13 $1.55

SF Jimmy Butler 36 $2.01

PF Kevin Love 36 $15.72

C Joakim Noah 34 $12.20

----------------------------------------------------------------

PG DJ Augustin 18 $5.00

SG Tony Snell 13 $1.47

SF Mike Dunleavy 20 $3.33

PF/C Jordan Hill 26 $5.00 (MLE)

PG Jimmer Fredette 10 $1.45 (min)

C Vet Minimum 0 $1.45 (min)

G Vet Minimum 0 $1.45 (min)

F Vet Minimum 0 $1.45 (min)

SG Rip Hamilton 0 $.33 (stretch provision)

Total Salaries: $72.27 million

Here's the rest of my plan. We should sit Derrick Rose on back-to-backs for the early part of the season. I have no idea if this is related to his injury, but Rose tore his meniscus on the second game of a back-to-back. Why risk Rose at all early in the season? Let's make sure he's actually ready again for the entire grind of the NBA year before having him go full-throttle. Plus, with DJ as a great backup, I'm comfortable with Rose missing 10 or so games simply to rest. Plus, more Jimmer time.

But it is not totally clear to me whether this is actually a better roster than the alternative where we do not trade for Kevin Love. Here's what that roster would look like.

PG Derrick Rose 34 $18.86

SG 1st Round Wing 10 $1.55

SF Jimmy Butler 36 $2.01

PF Taj Gibson 34 $8.00

C Joakim Noah 34 $12.20

----------------------------------------------------------------

PG DJ Augustin 18 $5.00

SG Tony Snell 10 $1.47

SF Mike Dunleavy 20 $3.33

PF Nikola Mirotic 20 $6.00

PF/C Jordan Hill 14 $5.00 (MLE)

PG Jimmer Fredette 10 $1.45 (min)

Rookie PF/C (#19 pick) 0 $1.27

G Vet Minimum 0 $1.45 (min)

SG Rip Hamilton 0 $.33 (stretch provision)

Total Salaries: $64.27 million

In this scenario, the Bulls quite obviously have more depth. By keeping Mirotic, we have a true backup PF (as long as he comes over), and Jordan Hill can play less minutes by exclusively being Jo's backup. We can also take a project big man with the #19 pick. In this scenario, if we need more money to re-sign DJ, we have some extra flexibility©.

And of course, we still should sit D Rose on back-to-backs for awhile because it's the obvious right choice. We should let Snell and the wing player we draft both play about even minutes in the regular season to determine who is better, and then play the better player exclusively as the rotations tighten up into the playoffs.

Which roster is better? I'm not sure. I think a Kevin Love trade is something worth exploring. I'd rather have Love than Carmelo. Love fits so well with the Bulls' core. Obviously, he's a great offensive player. Obviously, we suck, at defense. But Love's unique offensive strength augments the Bulls perfectly. He's a great shooter and can spread the floor for Rose. He's a creative passer and would work fantastically with Joakim in the post. He's one of the best rebounders in the NBA. Is all of this worth Taj, Mirotic, and a draft pick? Discuss.

Update 5/18

Kevin Love plans to opt out, is interested in trade to Bulls and Warriors. -Peter231
