I found this by accident while randomly googling Lari's hockey career (he was cut when the team learned he didn't know how to skate).
One of the players I knew least was also one of the best. Lari Ketner is now 36 and battling colon cancer, and his many friends are rallying to his cause.
The picture is not comforting. A fan has begun a website that reported last week that Ketner had begun a new chemotherapy program.
"The oncologist believes (it) will be more effective than the first treatment he received,'' the site tells us.
Tumors in his abdomen make Ketner ineligible for a chemo-radiation combination treatment. The website said Ketner would prefer prayers to money but people are sending money, with nearly $9,000 raised in six days.
I remember Lari as one of Krause's 5,000 2nd round power forwards (that is only a modest exaggeration). Later I kept him straight from the others by remembering him as "the one that didn't shoot at the White House" (that was Lonnie Baxter, I believe).
Another report mentions it's Stage 4 colon cancer. It's really appalling for a guy still in his mid-30s.
Lari seems like he's a rather kind and intelligent guy, and like the author I'm embarrassed I didn't learn more about him.
The website with updates and donations and the like is here.
