I haven't seen any talk of this ESPN Radio (Waddle and Silvy) interview with Pax but it has a couple of interesting bits. Most notably, Paxson seems to feel pretty much the way everyone does about Derrick's refusal to recruit.
"I personally would not have been comfortable doing that as a player. That was me, so I expect and appreciate where Derrick is coming from," Paxson said on "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on ESPN Chicago 1000.
"I would never tell a player, I don't think [owner] Jerry Reinsdorf or [general manager] Gar [Forman] would tell a player, 'Look, you have to do this.' If a player wants to do it, great. If he doesn't, that's his choice."
Paxson said players being around Rose during offseason workouts offers an indirect way to sell them on the Bulls.
"I know that Derrick has relationships with a lot of guys around the league. He spends his summers in L.A. working out with a lot of guys and I know he's got great relationships with people," Paxson said. "I do firmly believe that when you're around people you can sell yourself just being the person that you are, and we all know Derrick is a terrific young man.
"I don't see that as an impediment to us getting players here. I think at the end of the day people know who Derrick is and there are a lot of guys who would like to play with him."
So... it's not an impediment, and we won't force you to do it, but it'd be nice if you did it, Derrick.!
And then, he talks about how the Bulls are positioning themselves for the future, and what their goals are:
"The reason for doing the Deng deal has been obvious, we've stated it a number of times. It doesn't put us in a position right now to have max cap room this summer but it does give us the opportunity to have the ability to go out and pursue some guys and look at different avenues, whether it's through trading players or trading for players.
"It's a process. Now if somebody comes -- we've got three weeks now until the trade deadline and there hasn't really been any chatter at all from teams yet, but that's often the case when you're three weeks away -- we'll listen. But we're still a team that has played pretty well, and we like a lot of our pieces and we'll see where the year goes. People know that our guys don't quit, our coach doesn't quit and we don't quit, and we're just going to keep fighting away."
Umm... I know you have to say something in an interview and I know no team is going to give away any meaningful information in an interview like this, but jeez. Now they have the ability to both trade players and trade for players?
I guess when you've just traded away an all-star for a guy you immediately waived this makes sense in the technical sense, but.... meh.
