Andrew Goudelock is having a really nice summer league so far for the Bulls. In fact he has yet to disappoint.
On Saturday he led the Bulls to victory against the Grizzlies and poured in 26 points, on 9-15 shooting including three, 3 point FGs. He followed that up by a great performance against the Nuggets last night with a 31 point outburst on 10-13 shooting with 5 three pointers.
So who is this guy? Where did he come from? Goudelock is the former MVP of the D-League and for those of you who haven’t been watching Summer League (or had a chance to watch any Lakers games) he was a former Laker for the past 2 seasons. He actually didn’t see any serious time with the Lake Show this year as he only logged 6 min in 1 game for the Lakers, but he did contribute in the playoffs where he averaged 26min and 12 PPG. There’s no doubt Goudelock has boatloads of ability and talent, his summer league play isn’t that surprising considering he dominated the D league this year. In 36 min per contest Goudelock (PG/SG 6’3’’ 200 lbs 24 years old) averaged 21.1 PPG, 5.2 APG, 1.2 steals, 47% shooting and 37% from downtown.
It’s nice to see a guy come out with so much to prove and accomplish his goals. If he makes the Bulls roster what a story this will be. A guy that was drafted in the 2nd round, had a rocky start to his career in Los Angeles, gets sent down to the D-League where he is crowned MVP, has a decent role in the playoffs and then is cut by the Lakers only to be picked up by the Chicago Bulls, where he finds his niche coming off the bench to provide the Bulls with a much better scoring option than any one the Bulls have had on their bench in years. It all has the makings of a great "rags to riches" story. Here’s the problem Goudelock faces. With Jimmy Butler displaying his timely scoring and "Pippen-esque" defense, along with the recent solid play of Marquis Teague and the selection of Tony Snell (who I believe is going to play 2 guard rather than SF) along with Derrick Rose and Kirk Hinrich the Bulls Guard spots are all but filled up. Most people would agree that the Bulls have to go out and get another BIG before the season starts and I’m not totally against that, but you can’t ignore what Goudelock is doing in summer league and I know its SUMMER league so I’m not drinking the Andrew Goudelock Kool-Aid quite yet, but the dude is feelin’ it right now.
It may be a little to early to tell but if Goudelock keeps it up,I'm in favor of giving him a shot, he gives us another scoring option off the bench and let’s get real for just a second…Kirk Hinrich is on the down side of his career and can’t stay healthy Goudelock is a perfect fit for this team and with the proper tutelage under Thibs he can be a significant piece off the bench for a championship team in Chicago.
