[Note by your friendly BullsBlogger, 06/25/13 4:24 PM CDT: This was nearly immediately addressed by Deng's agent, who spoke to Nick Friedell of ESPNChicago and said there's been "zero" discussion of an extension.
Also, I recommend checking out HoopsRumors for details on how exactly a contract extension works for someone in Deng's position. Though as always, it's more fun to think about the subtext of why this story exists than the actual idea of a Deng extension (though that could be nice too)]
Surprise! The Chicago Bulls and Luol Deng are talking about a contract extension, according to (who else) Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports. This comes a day after a round of trade rumors tying Deng to the Wizards and Cavaliers, with the Bulls looking to acquire a high draft pick in return.
Deng is entering the final season of a six-year, $71 million contact. Most have assumed he might be on his way out of town with the Bulls' purported "2014 plan" hinging on letting Deng walk and exorcizing the amnesty clause on Carlos Boozer to create enough cap space to sign a max-level free agent. Maybe the Bulls have other ideas, though.
Deng has been the league-leader in minutes per game two of the last three years, establishing himself as a vital cog in Tom Thibodeau's incredible defense. Deng averaged 16.5 points and 6.3 rebounds per game on 42 percent shooting last season for the Bulls.
