Bulls reportedly in talks to sign Lou Amundson

Greg Smith-US PRESSWIRE

ESPN's Marc Stein reports that the Bulls are in talks to sign veteran big man Lou Amundson.

Since the Bulls lost Omer Asik and it became clear that Nazr Mohammed couldn't play anymore, we've been lamenting the lack of frontcourt depth on the roster. Injuries to essentially all the legitimate players haven't helped matters, and with Taj Gibson currently out with a sprained knee, it seemed like a necessity for the Bulls to sign another big.

Well, like clockwork, ESPN's Marc Stein reports that the Bulls are in talks to sign veteran big man Lou Amundson:

Amundson is a name that has been thrown around quite a bit since he was waived by the Timberwolves earlier this season. He's never been super productive in his career and played very little in Minnesota this year, but it's not like he would be asked to do that much. If he could just provide some energy and not be a complete stiff out there, he would hopefully be able to steal some minutes and help preserve the other bigs, especially Joakim Noah.

The Bulls can't actually sign Amundson for the rest of the year for another couple of days because of the hard cap (note: this apparently was wrong, could happen on Friday), but the Chicago Tribune's K.C. Johnson reports that they are hoping to sign him to a 10-day contract on Saturday. The Bulls could then sign him to another 10-day or the rest of the season if they choose. Based on what else is available in terms of free agent big men, this is probably the best the Bulls can do. Might as well go for it.

UPDATE: Chris Tomasson of Fox Sports Florida reports that Amundson is flying to Chicago and will sign a 10-day contract with the Bulls on Saturday. The Heat had been in talks with Amundson as well.
