I'm firmly in the camp that wants to see how far this team can go this year, and that any trades this season are highly unlikely. That being said, this off season will be extremely interesting. If this team doesn't win the Championship changes will be considered, but the 2014 free agency plan is tricky.
It basically comes down to whether there is a free agent available the Bulls think they can sign for about 12 million, that will be an upgrade over the combination of Deng and Boozer. In the short term, unless that player is Lebron, the answer is no. Besides, he's not coming to Chicago for 12 million/year anyway. Therefore, pulling the trigger on the 2014 free agency plan would most likely result in a step back in the short term, with an eye towards being a stronger team in the long run throughout Rose's prime.
So, looking at the potential free agent landscape, that narrows it down to two players in my opinion: Greg Monroe and Evan Turner. Neither are currently equal to the combination of Deng and Boozer, but with them turning 29 and 32 this season respectively, they are getting old in basketball years.
Monroe is only 23 and has quietly become one of the best centers in the league at least production-wise, if not wins. Unless he's offered the max, and maybe he will be, I don't know why he would want to stay in Detroit. A front line of Noah, Gibson and Monroe would be formidable.
Turner has been mostly a disappointment as a former 2nd overall pick, but is off to a great start this year and doesn't seem to have much interest in staying in Philadelphia, again, unless money talks, which it does. He's from Chicago and was a rival of Rose's in high school and if his success this season continues could be an intriguing running mate to pair with Rose.
Overall, I think what these scenarios illustrate is that the 2014 free agency plan is not a foregone conclusion, and we could be back with Deng and Boozer for at least one more year even if this team doesn't win the championship, and then rely on reinforcements down the road in the form of the Charlotte pick and Mirotic. What do you think?
