A few more random updates today in the guard market, which could include players which ideally (far-fetched, I admit) would give Derrick Rose someone capable of sharing the the scoring/playmaking load, but will ultimately be Kirk Hinrich on a 3-year deal with a 50-year job inside the Org.
Starting with the actual rumor, from Chris Tommasson from FoxSports:
Phoenix and Chicago are the 2 teams most heavily in the mix for free-agent shooting guard Michael Redd. Suns, who had Redd last season, are waiting to see if Eric Gordon offer sheet gets matched by New Orleans. Bulls are waiting to see what they might due with the July 10 deadlines to guarantee contracts of Kyle Korver, Ronnie Brewer and C.J. Watson.
Redd came back from multiple knee injuries to play in 51 games last year for the Suns. Phoenix has a world-renowned training staff but even they couldn't Redd completely back, as he posted a PER of 14 and was under 32% from three. Still, if we're talking about a vet minimum replacement for Kyle Korver (granted, it's depressing when we ARE talking about that) that's not so terrible.
More interesting to me is Jerryd Bayless, who recently had his qualifying offer rescinded by the Raptors and thus is now an unrestricted free agent. Bayless is a combo guard (or tweener if you're looking at it that way) who will turn 24 before training camp and is coming off his best season. KC Johnson tweeted that Bayless is 'possible' but there's been no reported interest from the Bulls end yet.
Bayless would likely command more than the exceptions the Bulls have to offer, though a sign/trade could be worked out with Kyle Korver's non-guaranteed contract (which has no 7/10 guarantee date). Then there's money 'saved' by not needing to keep CJ Watson (or keep him anyway figuring you won't better use mini-MLE elsewhere) and Bayless plays mostly PG and then alongside Rose when the MVP returns. Just an idea.
Elsewhere in guard news:
- The Sixers signed Nick Young to a one-year deal, and indicated to Lou Williams that they will not be retaining him.
- Ray Allen is still deciding between Miami and the Celtics.
- No real updates on previously-mentioned Bulls targets Courtney Lee and (of course) Kirk Hinrich. A lot of this won't play out until all the full MLEs (and cap space) are gone.
