[I'm sick of threads being full of Michael Freaking Beasley (including the ones I yanked these comments from), considering he plays at a position at where the Bulls are pretty established, there hasn't been any reported interest, and he's stunk. Talk about it here -yfbb]
Might as well try someone like him out early in the season….if he fails, so what? If he clicks…..great find and retain his services going forward. He still has all the same talent he had back when he was drafted, let Thibs work his magic on the kid.
Try him at the 2 and the 3. Gotta get unconventional this season and see if he can play, period. hHe Bulls future at the 4 is Taj and Mirotic…..but who knows how things play out for Deng at the 3. If Beasley can turn into a quality player at the 3 under Thibs, that opens up a whole world of possibilities for this team. It’s a long shot, but the first half of next season needs to be about experimentation while at the same time winning enough to be in position to get into the playoffs with a low-middle seed. WIth the weakness in the East that shouldn’t be the hardest thing, especially with an elite defense.
It’s fairly radical, but I have no problem sliding in a guy like Beasly in at the 2, assuming he can make some improvements in his play here in Chicago.
In general, I think the strict definitions given to positions are very old-school; they’re relevant but not concepts that a coach must adhere to. I think the lines between 1-2, 2-3 and 4-5 are fairly blurred these days and many of the positions are interchangeable. Now, depending on your opponent, you may have more or less flexibility. For instance, look at the East and tell me that there are tons of 2’s out there that can play….you can’t tell me that because there really aren’t many good ones.
So why not try out a bigger guy who’s more of a 3 at your SG slot? Especially for a team like the Bulls that has limited financial flexibility, you have to think outside the box. Try out Butler and Beasley at the 2…who care’s if they’re 6"8? Get flexible…you may get lucky.
