Colin Cowherd On Derrick Rose

Colin Cowherd On Derrick Rose (via martymonday69)

This is a segment on Derrick Rose's injuries on "The Herd". Colin is one of the only people i respect on espn, he's kind of a jack ass but he's gutsy and isn't afraid to say what he thinks. As for the slip ups this was on a Monday and Colin's a bit of a drinker, you do the math... I'll give him a pass haha.

The one thing i thought of when i watched this is, what if we had taken Beasley instead of Rose? I'm a big believer that a player only gets as good as the situation they're in, like Rondo wouldn't be the player he is if not being coached by Doc, Thibs, and 3 hall of famers. Would Beasley have been a hell of a player being coached by Thibs? I think so, but what's for certain is we have an mvp on our team. I just hope he can stay healthy enough to win some championships, he deserves it.

but he says them lol, i mostly hate like Chris Broussard and stuff. I feel like they’re literally puppets.

lol

He just basically says small players who score at the rim tend not to last very long. Then advises that Derrick Rose starts pulling up for jumpers more or else he could end up like Wade or Iverson.

Iverson had his problems

But I don’t think longevity was one of them

by tuluse on Feb 16, 2012 3:02 PM CST up reply actions

how was it not?

he was always injured and just stopped being a productive player

by MartyMondays on Feb 16, 2012 3:03 PM CST up reply actions

He still put up a 20.9 PER at the age of 32 with a career high TS% playing 82 games

The next year he got traded to Detroit and didn’t fit in, and then went to a series of teams where he also didn’t fit. It wasn’t a lack of production that killed his career, but an unwillingness to be anything but the focal point.

by runningman on Feb 16, 2012 11:53 PM CST up reply actions

he was not "always injured"

he played 74, 80, 48 (out of 50 in the lockout shortened season), 70, 71, 60, 82, 48, 75, 72, 65, 82, and 57 games. That’s not really any more injury prone than any number of other players of much bigger size than Iverson. His only really injury riddled season was the one he played 48 games of 82. 57 games in his second to last season wasn’t great, but that’s mostly because the Nuggets stopped playing him. He went to Detroit and played 54 games and nearly 2000 minutes.

If Rose has a career like Wade...

I’ll be happy. A Championship, an additional trip to the Finals, and 8 playoff years in 8 years (Imma give them a playoff spot this year). If Rose has a Championship in the next 4-5 years and is still an All-Star / MVP candidate, I’ll consider that a successful early career.

by Doshi on Feb 16, 2012 4:29 PM CST up reply actions

I just want him to skip

the part where he uses Chicago for leverage and signs in Miami. I’ll never stop disliking Wade for his involvement in that whole debacle.

by metalkiwis on Feb 17, 2012 9:58 AM CST up reply actions

I absolutely agree

His little facade about possibly wanting to come to Chicago is exactly like his personality though- attention seeking whore who thinks he deserves everything. Always, always, always looking for a foul call while taking some of the most asinine shots. I hope Chicagoans exclude him from our heritage when they talk about him, not necessarily because he didn’t want to come play for us, but because he made us do the whole dog and pony show for him while having no intention of playing here.

WTF

Hinrich scoring at the basket? Rose is 6’3 and his playing weight is 190-200 + pounds. Yes Colin I’d take Calvin Johnson over Jackson because Johnson is flat out better. This is the first season Derrick has missed significant amount of time mainly because of back spasms and how truncated the schedule is. If he is going to have that opinion at least back it up with some factual logic.

he can score, we all know this but how many shots does it take. and again he doesn’t really offer plus rebounding or even average defense. most of this is because he’s a tweener. Beasley is basically a better Fizer.

by C Smoove on Feb 17, 2012 10:10 AM CST up reply actions

he shoots 45%

Which is pretty decent, he has 3 point range and will get you around 6 boards a game. Not a perfect player by any means but he’s looked at as a lot worse cause of his rep.

He’d be a great 6th man….the guy can score

by C Smoove on Feb 17, 2012 9:07 PM CST up reply actions

Beasley did not play in a dysfunctional environment when he got to the NBA

he spent his first two years in Miami with DWade and Coach Spo. Say what you will about Miami, but I’ve never heard of them being a place that stunts player development. Beasley’s problems are both mental (he’s has a fews screws loose) and basketball skills wise (he isn’t physical enough to be a 4, not quick enough to be a 3). He certainly can score, but he has never worked hard enough to develop a consistent go to NBA move. He doesn’t like contact so he doesn’t rebound like you would expect a 4 too. And defensively he is a sieve at nearly any position you put him at.

If you put him on the Bulls team, maybe they would have been able to hide his defensive limitations, but his lack of mental fortitude would have shown through. Beasley’s game is best suited as a #1 option scorer, but he isn’t mentally capable of performing that task. Beasley could never carry the burden of being the #1 guy as a rookie. That would have been especially hard if he was in Chicago and Chicago-native Rose was kicking ass in Miami.

He is Antoine Walker 2.0 w/o the shimmy and with more mental baggage.

Would Thibs even be here if the Bulls didn't draft Derrick?

And I don’t really think you can say Beasley would have been better here. If Spoelstra and Riley couldn’t get him to his potential then how the hell could VDN have managed it?

by Survival Impaired on Feb 16, 2012 5:15 PM CST reply actions

Don't think i would ever hope that we would have drafted Beasley guys

I’m so glad we picked rose instead it was just an interesting idea to me. It would have changed the entire league but i don’t really think Wade + Rose would mesh at all. It would be like a worse current Miami team in my opinion.

Beasley would probably never have been the player Rose is but i do think he is a nice player. I wouldn’t mind him on the Bulls instead of Boozer plus he grew an inch since entering the league and is now 6’10! He’s younger than Rose as well which is pretty crazy.

Colin didn’t attack Rose at all in this segment either, and i do agree with him in the sense that Rose should stop playing as aggressive. In my opinion it’s not worth throwing your body in the paint all game long during the regular season at least.

I mainly did it

because a lot of you mention how espn never brings up the Bulls so i thought I’d show you a time that they did.

by MartyMondays on Feb 16, 2012 6:06 PM CST reply actions

my problem with espn is when they bring up the bulls

they dont really discuss the bulls…Like with the heat they will talk about the roster the coach the players what they have to work on what they want to see when they saw it. With the bulls they tell u the bare minimum and then try to guess at what rose should do without any actual information about him or the team or anything.

I listen to the nbatoday podcast, and its pretty awesome actually. About two weeks ago they did a podcast and they say, ’well we get a ton of emailers from chicago bulls fans about how we dont talk about them, so today we are gonna make sure we talk a lot about the bulls" I kinda got happy cuz i agreed, and they started up talking about the bulls as promised, and then at some point compared the bulls to the heat….that was probably 2 minutes into the bulls discussion, from there on the rest of the “bulls” portion of the podcast was regarding the heat, not the bulls. It was a major let down…i think essentially this is what people on bab and chicago bulls fans in general complain about when refering to espn.

I kinda get it, the bulls dont really have that “personality” that espn can talk about or exploit. Rose has flaws to his game, but the ones who talk about those flaws dont know how to actually talk about them without getting rose wrong (i.e. rose shoots too much) and the knowledgeable ones on the bulls rarely ever show up. I kinda dont care really, mainly cuz espn is either overhyping , severely underestimating, or just plain wrong about basketball subjects in general.

If i had to pick an espn talking head (or two) I think Ryen Russillo and Scott Van Pelt are my two favorites. Especially Russillo…those guys are objective, qualify whatever thoughts or opinions they have, and i actually believe them when they say they watch the games. I dont always agree with them, but at the least they arent doing the typical overhyping or making shit up and calling it fact.

I really like scott van pelt and russillo. Colin and Skip i like more for entertainment and they make me laugh, but mostly they just babble on and on. I don’t take espn as a serious source for information, i barely even watch it, so when i do it’s usually just for an hour or two on a slow morning.

i love the floater

and have noticed he’s using it more

by MartyMondays on Feb 16, 2012 11:47 PM CST up reply actions

I get what he's trying to say, but I don't really agree with it that much. The only times I

really remember him being pounded by going to the rim was against Dwight, and the Pacers……..and the Pacers are dirty as fuck. Rose has great body control so he actually avoids a lot of contact. I remember people on here complained because he wasn’t getting to the line enough even though he finished near the rim at a pretty high clip.

Now when he tries to draw fouls with contact and he takes a fall, everyone holds their collective breaths. Can’t really have it both ways. I’ll trust Rose in developing his game to include more jumpers. I mean he uses the floater more this year to not have to drive as much, and it’s pretty effective, so I’m sure with time he’ll get even better with his jumper and be a more complete player. Turf toe isn’t really an injury that you get from contact as far as I know. I think it’s more of speed, turning directions, etc. Back spasms was him trying to compensate for the toe. Nothing really to do with contact either.

Size isn’t always important(that’s what she said) when it comes to injury. Some people are just more durable than others. And to compare football players to basketball players……well it’s cowherd so that’s not too surprising. But Jerry Rice, Marvin Harrison, Randy Moss(Thin as hell, didn’t like to go over the middle much either), Barry Sanders who some thought was too small to play and wound up being the greatest, my opinion anyway. You go for the best talent regardless of size. Being big does not equal being durable.

On the J.R. Smith bandwagon until otherwise advised.

It's entertainment

can’t defend the Durant thing, but the lebron love is always going to happen. I hate him but there’s a good chance we will never see a player as talented as him in our lives again. The Tyler thing is funny, and he’s right that its not a center’s league.

No one should turn on espn and respect it as a completely true source of information, its like a Wikipedia with no editors. If you like sports you might watch it for others opinions of sports. Is rather watch Cowherd then Chris Broussard or sportscenter, at least there’s opinions and jokes. My view on him is he reminds me of one of my friends who talks way too much. On another note I think people instantly feel attacked if Derrick Rose is brought up in any way that isn’t positive. I love D.Rose but it shouldn’t be shunned to talk about his flaws.

by MartyMondays on Feb 17, 2012 8:39 AM CST up reply actions

Ironic that you bring up the Lebron love

Because Cowherd used to be really critical on Lebron when he played for the Cavs. Ever since he went to Miami, Cowherd talks about him like he walks on water (go figure). And I agree that it not a center’s league, but saying it’s because centers are obese? And I don’t mind that everyone doesn’t love Rose, but your job as a journalist is to give your opinion with included facts. Not vilify players for the hell of it. (Which Cowherd loves to do).

Its not that I don’t like what Cowherd brand of work is, but the fact that he doesn’t change his opinions even in the presence of statistics and evidence to the contrary. It seems like he goes on the air and just makes arbitrary statements. And yeah you said it, it’s Wikipedia without editors. The reason I have no respect for him and Bayless is they don’t give credit to the players even when they do something great. People who do that are what I call fans. I hate Kobe Bryant with a passion, but even I have to give him credit when he does something special. So as a journalist, of course it’s your job to stir up controversy a little, but to just do it for the sheer fact and have very little to no real evidence to support your statement other than the fact you don’t like someone. Anyone on this blog could do that.

see but saying they're obese

Is what makes people think the show is funny. You can go up there and describe how the defensive 5 seconds or whatever changed the league. Or how guards are better to watch, that’s not entertainment though. He makes people laugh talks for 2 hours about whatever he feels like, and you either love him or hate him. His job is done.

Both him and skip bayless have that niche, but id choose skip bayless over cowherd because skip is absurdly over the top that it actually is hilarious, colin is a guy who takes himself way too serious and comes off as a pompous douche

Colin Cowherd doesn't watch basketball outside the Lakers, the Heat, and highlight reels

I’m no brilliant tactician, but his NBA analysis is infantile, he has no understanding of the game outside simple statistics, and he has no appreciation for the game, period. (I’m not going to confuse “love of winners” with “love of the game.”) By his own admission he’s a football guy, and his radio show is a football show ten months out of the year. And while I guess I can summon up a miniscule amount of respect for someone who makes the number of bold, declarative statements he does, he’s so clearly interested in just stirring up dispute that I can’t tell where ESPN stops and the human being begins.

Saying one thing one day and saying the exact opposite is pretty much the norm on ESPN.

In fact, they’d probably fire you if you reported and talked about things the way they are ‘in reality’ and not the way the company wants you to. Sensationalism, it’s all it is. Look at Tiger, look at Tebow. I am sure something about Tebow will come up in the next few months and they’ll try and bring him down, or they’ll keep trying to stuff him down our throats any which way they can.

the difference between cowherd and bayless

is that bayless criticizes Rose for doing too much. cowherd sometimes goes after Rose for seemingly doing too little. I remember Cowherd saying something ridiculous like Rose doesn’t have the competitive spirit in him and started listing off players like Rondo, LeBron, and Kobe as players who do have that fire. At least Skip acknowledges the fact that Rose is a guy who just wants to win more than anything else…but Skip hates the fact that he’s got no support behind him

Sometimes he goes out of his way to bash the Bulls, mainly because outside of Rose who he has this weird strange dislike for, they don’t have a real superstar. Cowherd even admitted over the radio that he cheers for the big name talent over the blue-collar, lunch pail guys.
