Friendly Debate: Rip Hamilton or Grant Hill?

Please help a friend and I settle a debate regarding the Bulls.

Debate: Would the bulls have been better off signing grant hill or rip hamilton?

The debate is not meant to consider the fact that one player has been healthy this year while the other player hasn't. But since we have not seen Grant Hill in a Bulls uniform, and minimal of Rip, this is still seems to be an opinion based on the unknown. Both players are assumed to take on similar countracts (length and $).

Thank you.

rip hamilton

he just flows perfectly with this offense. Grant Hill does not move well off the ball like Rip. Our ideal player was someone who can create his own shot, but Rip was the next best type of player this team needed.

Hill is a better defender than Rip and has a betetr three point shot, but he would be a redundant on this team. He doesnt have the same motility like he used to (obviously because of all those injuries).

Agreed,

It depends on Rip being healthy, but to me Grant HIll these days is like a lesser Luol Deng, and we already have Deng.

Rip Hamilton offers a lot more in his O game than Hill does (better passing, better movement without the ball, better mid range shooting).

At their peaks, Grant Hill was much better than Hamilton (or Deng), but those peaks disappeared for Grant early on in his Orlando days.

He’s good today, but his role wouldn’t change anything to our team, and we already play Luol 38 MPG. (Maybe that could lower to 34 MPG)…

The kid's out of this world. He's got Allen Iverson speed, Jason Kidd's vision, Chauncey Billups' shooting ability and Michael Jordan's athleticism. How do you guard that? - Pacers coach Frank Vogel.

It all depends on Rip being healthy for the playoffs and enough time before it

for the offense to get work together. We’ve all seen what Rip can bring; if he’s good for when it counts, it’ll have been a helluva acquisition.

Rip Hamilton

And it’s not even close. Even with his injury troubles, Rip has still outplayed Hill in nearly every way this year. Also, Rip is honestly the best fit for the system currently in place (with the exception of Ray Allen). The system is designed for someone who runs well off screens, can shoot well, and can make good passes coming off screens. Rip might be the best passer coming off screens currently in the NBA and that just makes him a great fit. Most of the SG/SF’s that are better passers than Rip are guys that play as a second PG or primary ball handler type of player (Monta Ellis, LeBron, Hedo, Delonte West, Pierce Iggy). Of course you don’t mind adjusting the system for a guy like Wade or Ellis who all don’t fit terribly well into the current system (because who cares, they are freakin awesome). But Hamilton is simply a better fit and producing better. Gotta be Hamilton.

Maybe we can pick up Todd Zafirovski if he comes out this year. And I’m sure we could manage a trade for Shelden Williams.

TL;DR

by metalkiwis on Feb 16, 2012 10:02 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah, if we're disregarding health (which we should), I'd pick Rip easily

I don’t even see how Grant Hill is that great of a fir anyway. I mean, personality wise, he’s perfect, but on the court? Meh. In fact, I would’ve probably preferred waiting and trying for JR Smith instead of Hill.

When Rip is healthy, we all saw he great he was for the team. Just gotta hope he gets healthy again this year

Also, Shocked that Grant Hill is winning the vote fairly easily

Why are people picking him?

by Juiceboxjerry on Feb 14, 2012 2:33 PM CST up reply actions

I picked Rip,

but Hill was one of my top choices for acquisitions at the 2 in the off-season. He’s got size, is a good defender, hits the mid-range shot really well and can still create occasionally. He’s a good player.

by dakoose on Feb 14, 2012 2:55 PM CST up reply actions

grant had secret knee surgery and it cost his start to the season

also the miniscule preseason, combined with age, i suppose.

but hill has been particularly good lately, and he’s still clearly the superior nba player. for a time, i thought not, but i was momentarily wrong. (47%+ shooting in the last 10 games, 4 ast per the last 5 games… he’s back)

Hmm, didn't know he turned it around

Still think Rip makes more sense, but that’s at least a bit more understandable.

Not that I had a problem with Grant Hill to begin with, but I just don’t think he would’ve been the best fit. Just like I liked Caron Butler, but wasn’t really hung up on him coming here.

It’ll be interesting to see if Courtney Lee get moved, because you keep hearing that Houston wants to trade him. If they moved off their high demands, he would’ve been an awesome pickup. I still like Rip better when healthy (more experienced, and gets respect from refs), but Lee would’ve been a player that we could count on for a while, and a great fit skill-wise

courtney lee seems very inconsistent

i see him a few games and wonder, “man, what happened?” then lately, he’s been very good in games.

i like him much more than kevin martin.

ronpaul2012dotcom - it is important

by marionette on Feb 14, 2012 4:59 PM CST up reply actions

I'd take Kevin Martin over the rip we have now.

If Rip was healthy maybe not….. now that’s a tough one. But yeah I’d take Rip over Hill. Martin FTW

by pick1out on Feb 14, 2012 10:37 PM CST up reply actions

The more I watch Martin

the more I begin to think he’s nothing but a glorified Nick Young. Granted I think he’s a much more mature player, but he really doesn’t offer much else if he isn’t scoring. He’s scored 8 or fewer points in 4/5 last games and is clearly in Kevin McHale’s dog house.

That being said, I wouldn’t be mad if JR made a call down there and see if they may be willing to part with him for something (even though I think it’s a given they want Noah).

the glory in "glorified" comes from how martin gets to the line

but to me, he neither does that nor shoots consistently. nick young shoots consistently.

martin is a terrible defender, imo. (ugh, i feel like majoyenrac, constantly repeating it…)

Ehh

Martin does get more rebounds and averages more assists than Young. Not many more, but more none the less.

But it really is a bad vs. evil kind of thing if you had to choose between those two.

Grant is not winning

Rip is destroying the vote. Some1 (presumably the friend opining for Grant Hill) hijacked the poll and in a 10 min window it went from 32-6 Rip to 51-36 Hill. Looks like Rip might win despite…

Grant Hill has been miserable this year

For some reason, he’s playing like he’s 39. Oh wait.

Pat Riley is the devil.

Both players are still good

with Hill, it’s a testament to how elite he was. The guy was one of the best players in the game with Detroit and lost so many years to injuries with Orlando it’s tough to gauge where he ranks. Still, most regular players can’t do what he’s doing at age 39. He’s overpaid, but is not yet trash.

Hamilton has looked great for the Bulls except in the game against Miami— which is a problem, because that team is the likeliest team to shut down Rip’s incessant cutting and solid passing. He’s old and unhealthy but if you can get a postseason out of him he makes a huge difference. A healthy Rip is better than a healthy Hill at this point, and we really need his cutting and energy on offense more than we need Hill’s mid-range jumpers.

he did frustrate wade in that game though

and the man was playing, as he himself admitted, on one leg. he was hurting bad.

hill would guard wade at least as well. i was impressed with rip on wade tho'.

hill is better. hill is healthier(!), yet got trounced in the poll(?). smells like blind homer optimism.

okay, i admit to off topic

but really, the poll doesn’t matter. the heat is what matters, if the bulls can get there.

after all, i can say that hill is “better”, but they obviously are close. it won’t matter if hamilton can’t play, or is diminished.
