Derrick Rose back injury: No structural damage, still day-to-day

From KC Johnson:

Back specialist confirmed Bulls' diagnosis of DRose. Lower back spasms. Nothing structurally wrong with back. Muscular issue. Day-to-day.

That doesn't really say much, but it does say what it isn't: nothing crazy, season ending, etc. So that's good.

As far as updates for this week's games, I expect bullcrap from Thibs and we'll find out at tipoff. Don't want the those Sacramento Kings prepared!

Thank God.

To be honest, we are getting pretty lucky with these injuries this year. Deng is able to play, and it seems after some rest Rose will be able to play. The only injury i’m concerned about is Hamilton’s. And, my worry isn’t even about his actual injury but about his conditioning and ability to ball after being out this long. I forget he is even on the team at times.

by K_yle33 on Feb 13, 2012 5:07 PM CST reply actions

well cause he hasn't even been with the team in a bit

dealing with a personal issue away from the team while rehabbing. so it’s not like he’s even been a presence on the bench.

if he can stay healthy in the second half of the season, not too worried about getting his conditioning right for when it really matters…

I'm glad this isn't serious. Hopefully he rests it properly and he's good to go. Maybe his

toe will get better too.

yeah, especially

since it seems like these back issues have arisen from him compensating for his toe and all that. so maybe if his toe gets improves, he’s less likely to reaggravate this injury as well.

I'm 30. I've had lower-back issues since I was 19

I’ve dealt with back spasms for 10 years. What Rose needs is 1) rest and 2) flexeril.

If the spasms are anywhere near as bad as mine were at their worst (trip to ER), he needs to be on muscle relaxers for at least 10 days. The most strenuous activity he should be doing is stretching, and getting massages or ultrasound to stimulate blood flow.

If he plays tomorrow I will be pissed.

by gafferland on Feb 13, 2012 5:46 PM CST reply actions   1 recs

i hate flexiril..worst wake up feeling in the world

what worked for me was ibuprofen 800mg, rest & chiro…plus alot of streching exercise & massage 9like you said)

by Belize on Feb 13, 2012 5:54 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah it sucks. It makes you tired, but that's what muscle relaxers do.

After I went to the ER I was on Flexeril and hydrocodone for the pain for two weeks, after which I was basically a functioning person again.

I still have a carisoprodol prescription for when spasms keep me up at night.

Can’t imagine being an NBA player with these issues. Crazy.

Seeing how he responds to the therapy. And when we feel, he feels, that he’s well enough to go back on the floor (he’ll return)."

Sounds like my favorite FO guy is finally taking ownership and realizing the team’s future is at stake here. I predict we won’t be seeing him back until the ASG, and then he’ll play real games after that.

In a sense, I think the ASG would be a good tuneup for him to see if he’s fine without any pressure.

On the real tip though

For the last 24-48 hours I’ve been seeing the entire Bulls future flashing before my eyes. Staving off depression and thinking about a Bulls team without D-Rose. After hearing he’s going to be fine, I now have this realization that maybe I was taking this dude for granted. Never again.

Appreciate every move/every play/every shot, because in this damn league – especially with this season from hell – you never know when it could be the last. This kid is once in a lifetime.

As the Blog-a-bull community...

Lets out a sigh of collective relief. Any other news would have basically meant the season was over. Sounds like he will get rest.

Hopefully, he can skip the All-Star weekend and relax all the way into March.

by Dionysus2.0 on Feb 13, 2012 6:47 PM CST reply actions

Am I the only one almost MORE nervous because it is "just back spasms"?

Derrick is going to instantly think he can play through it and may end up hurting it worse. If the team doesn’t really put their foot down and tell him to rest, Bulls fans should really let them hear it.

by Brigade17 on Feb 13, 2012 7:09 PM CST reply actions

lol

Fact. Actually, after some of the other Rose quotes this week, I think he will do the right thing. It seems like he understands that it got worse when he tried to play through it. You never know though, but no structural damage is great news.

by DRoseO1 on Feb 13, 2012 7:45 PM CST up reply actions

What I mean is that it has clearly been hurting him severely, and that sounded like a pinched nerve to me

I didn’t mean that he had broken a vertebrae or something, but that diagnosis of “back spasms” can be taken several ways, especially for an athlete like Rose.

I truly do think he will just brush it off and try to force his way on to the court. Did you see his face yesterday? He’s miserable when he isn’t playing.

Great news!

Hopefully now all it takes is a few days off or however long it takes for him to heal to the point where he is able to play at his best. This comes at a good time, as now we have the Kings, several home games and the all star break. Rip should be back relatively soon, and now we have to hope Deng isn’t done for the rest of the season. If Deng isn’t done, and he too, is able to come back to something like his best? We are gonna be in great shape. Now we just need Korver to make shots, CJ to handle the ball better and not wast possessions, Asik to make his inside presence felt whenever he has the chance and Boozer to play tougher D and move out of his mom’s house.

Hopefull he's back for the ASG

Not saying that just because it’d be awesome to have him in, but also it’s just about the perfect tune up for him before getting back to real games. Nobody trying to hammer him or anything, just let him test it and see how he moves and how it feels in what’s essentially a glorified scrimmage.
