I haven't made a fanpost in a while but I need to vent for a second. The Bulls have started out 5-3 in this young season so far and that's great but I have a confession to make. Until Rose gets back, I'll be watching something else going on in the NBA with just as much attention as I give the Bulls. Also with as much fury and frustration as watching Carlos Boozer get out rebounded and dunked on by Elton Brand. What's that you ask? The play of OJ Mayo and Omer Asik.
These are two players that could and should very well be on the roster today. I'm not the cap guy with all the data to tell me that having these two players on the 2012-2013 roster wasn't possible but come on...this was possible. OJ Mayo is currently putting up 21.5ppg. While shooting at his highest FG% (48.6%) and 3pt FG% (58.9) in his young career so far. You know what that looks like to me? It looks like a young, maturing SG that could have played right next to Rose once he returned.
Omer Asik is averaging a double double for the season. Let me type this again... Omer Asik is averaging a DOUBLE DOUBLE (11ppg and freaking 13 rebs) for the season! Fresh off a 16 and 16 performance last night, Omer is also shooting 73% from the free throw line. You know what that looks like to me? Along with Noah, it looks like the best defensive front court to play in the league since the Spurs drafted Tim Duncan to play with David Robinson. The frustrating part was that this frontcourt was already sitting on the Bulls roster! Folks, nothing has changed in Omer Asik's game and helped him become this double double machine but more playing time. But hey we couldn't give him more playing time at the risk of pissing off Carlos Boozer by benching him or just amnestying him so Omer was expendable right?
Yeah it's early in the season and things have a way to regressing to the mean..blah, blah, blah. The fact of the matter is that what many of us were upset about and complained about this offseason is coming to fruition. That this wasn't a "lost" season. That there were ways to improve this roster dramatically while not having to wait for the next great free agent pipe dream in 2014 or by breaking the bank. All it took was planning, and ingenuity, and some foresight, oh and some courage. Of course GarPax hasn't shown to have any of those traits. Amnestying Boozer, resigning Asik, and spending $8.22 million for two years on OJ Mayo instead of $8 million for two years on Kirk Hinrich is all it would have taken to make this roster formidable with a returning Rose but look what we have instead. A worse roster with less depth all over the place.
Want to know why big time free agents don't want to come here? It's because of the lack of creativity in making better moves. Like already deciding that Kirk Hinrich is a more valuable piece than OJ Mayo and probably trying to give Mayo Nate Robinson money instead. But Dils...rumor has it that Rose wanted Kirk Hirich. Yeah and Micheal Jordan wanted Walter Davis. So what? This is why GMs get paid too and why it's not up to Rose to persuade guys come here. GarPax are failing at their jobs because they are suppose to create an atmosphere for players to want to come to the greatest city in the world to play basketball. Any GM can draft Rose after the winning the lottery. The real work starts after that.
So go ahead and enjoy little Nate Robinson as he does his best BG impersonation for his 20th team while also enjoying a broke down Kirk Hinrich in the twighlight of his otherwise overrated career dribble his little heart out. Enjoy watching Nazr Mohammed grab more paychecks than rebounds and Marco Bellinelli play more like washed up ketchup than hotsauce. While all of that is going on I'll sit patiently and wait for the local media in this town to stop for a second from writing articles about Rose's rehab stint and the new Bulls practice facility to ask one basic question...What in the hell is John Paxson and Gar Forman doing?
