Dwight Howard discusses possibility of joining Bulls (that's us!)

To the Trib's Vaughn McClure:

If I could play with Derrick right now and God wanted that to happen, it will happen...It's about wherever God wants me to play, wants me to go. If that's Chicago, then it's Chicago. It has nothing to do with Adidas, In fact Adidas would love that because me and Derrick have the same (marketing) guy.'

In conclusion: Gar Forman is potentially God.

He has never put the Bulls on his lists of teams he would like to get traded to. This seems to me like he is placating a local writer. If he wants to play with Derrick he can force the issue but he really doesn’t so he won’t.

They can save the world if they don't kill each other first.

Derrick

can’t be vocal about acquiring a player the magnitude of Howard and still ask Noah to play hard and rebound. He can’t ask Deng to play give it his all for 40 minutes a night when the leader of the team doesn’t think you’re good enough. In the end it isn’t up to Rose to force the issue its purely Howard’s. Either he forces a trade to where he wants to go or he goes their through free agency.

They can save the world if they don't kill each other first.

yeah i mean

dwight getting all pissy about his teammates and shit, when he’s made it clear he doesn’t want to be there… why give effort for someone who doesn’t want to play with you. makes sense with his “rollin with keith” comment too. no need to alienate who you got…

Look

Dumb people need to stop defending rose

He should’ve been recruiting and he should be doing it now

How

Did all that recruiting go for the Knicks? Melo and Stoudemire can’t play together. Chris Paul ended up with the Clippers another Knick “recruit”.

I feel like if Dwight come's here,

it’s gonna be on DRose’s terms. They’re gonna tell him it’s DRose’s team if you wanna be here, you gotta get with the program and quit fucking around. No more EKG paddles if you’re a Bull; you gotta put away the cape, put on your hard hat, bring your lunch pail and punch your ticket.

by dakoose on Jan 30, 2012 3:01 PM CST up reply actions

I don't know if that will work.

This team has such great chemistry and similar personalities of “work my ass off and fuck shit up.” I honestly believe DRose isn’t recruiting because he doesn’t want to screw that up. He likes his team, and he knows there’s no room for egos.

THEO!

by wrigleyrocker12 on Jan 30, 2012 4:07 PM CST up reply actions

When I look at DRose, Kyle, Brewer, Deng, Taj, Omer and Luol,

I definitely see the hard-working, intense attitude that you’re talking about. With Joakim, I see that on the floor but at the same time I see him out there winded late in games, but he’s changed his body quite a bit over the last two years, so I guess he’s got that attitude to.

But then I look at Carlos Motherfucking Boozer and I see a dog, and if this team can get along with this screaming, head shaking fake-ass hustler who doesn’t play defense and doesn’t really bring it when the games matter, they’ll definitely be able to fit in a persona like Dwight, who’s carried his team to the finals and has been carrying a team loaded with overpaid, over the hill bums for a few years now. Plus, I think the Bulls can kind of reign in Dwight’s comedy club routine being that there’s nobody on the Bulls who does that stuff, so Dwight won’t have a partner like he does in Orlando with Glen Davis.

by dakoose on Jan 30, 2012 4:50 PM CST up reply actions   2 recs

I know you hate Boozer, and you probably know that I like him...

But if you really think it’s a lack of hustle/trying, then I would like to say you’re wrong. I think you’re clouded by your hate of him. His problems stem far from a lack of hustle or hard work, and it’s already been shown that these guys get along with him, so there’s something there.

THEO!

Have already struggled with injuries, and it’s clear that Rose’s toe problem will bother him all year.

If we can trade a hurt Deng and Noah for the NBA’s best center and one of it’s best players, and maybe win this year… you have to do it.

That said, I’ll probably buy a Deng Magic jersey and start watching more Magic games, because I love Deng and Noah and they are a pleasure to root for.

This is nothing new for Magic fans

It seems like every week, there’s a new team that gets mentioned that Howard could possibly be traded to.

The distraction is starting to get to be too much for the Magic, with the Magic getting embarrassed in four games in the last week following tonight’s blowout loss at home to the Pacers.

Howard called out his teammates after the New Orleans loss Friday night, but he has very little if any credibility left with his teammates because of his trade requests.

I’m a huge Howard fan, but before he calls out anybody, he has to do something about his dreadful FT%, which was at 47.8% for the season before tonight’s 4 of 15 FT shooting.

Maybe God can help Howard with his free throw shooting.

by metalkiwis on Jan 30, 2012 7:38 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

Yeah, it really depends on who the Bulls have to give up to get him...

Howard is the best center in basketball but his post game is not all that reliable imo and not just because his missed free throws. He has improved with it last year (a lot of years in the league though to just be getting better at it), but he does not have good touch on those short turnarounds, hooks, ect. and still has to rely on brute strength to get to the rim. If a team has a big center that can even give him fits with that so his impact will be mainly on the defensive end. Noah already does a good job with boards and blocking shots so Howard will be an upgrade there, but at what cost assuming Noah is part of the deal along with some others.

Also, this is Rose’s team. Will he be willing to share the spotlight with Howard and vice versa and neither worry about who’s team it is? Man not even be an issue, but both are among the best in the league and both have been the man for the respective franchises. I don’t think Kobe even at his advanced age would defer to Howard even to the point of just being equals. It could be an issue.

Rose isn't that kind of guy IMHO

Personality-wise I wonder more about Howard’s willingness to accept having to keep his emotions in check on the floor…because Thibs would NOT deal with anything of the sort. Rose to me seems like one of the easiest players in the world to play with, ego-wise.

In the short term, maybe.

If the Bulls traded several players for Howard this season, they could kill their chance to win a title this year — but set themselves up for multiple titles in the future. It would be worth it, but we would need a guaranteed extension of Howard’s contract first.

Noah, Boozer, and two 1st rounders (including Charlotte’s) for Howard, Turkoglu and Anderson OR gambling on the Magic calling Howard’s bluff and not trade him, and then the Bulls amnestying Boozer and signing Howard in his place?

And Howard will be playing with Rose, in less than a month, in Orlando for the All-Star game (assuming both are healthy).

The Bulls should be able to make an attractive package without including Deng.

Noah, Boozer, Gibson or Asik (not both…big man depth is necessary) plus either the Charlotte pick or Mirotic (I’d rather throw in the Charlotte pick as Mirotic is the real deal) for Howard/Hedo should work.

Our only hope is if after this season Carlos Boozer “has a little accident” and his contract goes away, because I can’t see the guys paying him to be amnestied, but maybe they can pay someone to make him “go away”. I’m kidding of course.

I mean, how would this money even work? Rose and Howard at the max, Boozer at almost max, Turk (who we’d likely get) making almost as much as Boozer? It will never happen. Sure the salaries might be equal, but think of the future.

Or someone explain to me how.

At least in Miami they have only 3 guys getting max deals.

I agree one of the Bulls’ strength right now is the front court depth—have three guys who can play center and play it well defensively. Howard plus either Gibson or Asik keep that dynamic with two and Orlando gets a lot better upfront overall plus two guys who can shoot it well.

but change it a little
(Noah instead of Boozer)

its basically
Noah/Deng/Asik/Watson

for

Howard/Turkoglu/Duhon
(plus picks or whatever)

Bulls would look like: Rose/Hamilton/Turkoglu/Boozer/Howard
Duhon/Gibson/Butler/Korver/Lucas/Scalabrine/Brewer Przybilla?

Then our needs for next season would be wing defenders.

The luxury tax is an issue, but you can look at it two ways, you can waive Boozer next season and start Gibson, then pay Boozer the 40 million he is owed (just off the cap), or you can keep him and move him later, because even if the Bulls are in the tax, I don’t think they’d be paying more than 13 million in tax dollars that they would by keeping him and grabbing role players.

Turkoglu could be moved for someones spare parts along with Duhon along with whatever remaining Bulls picks. The Bulls probably won’t want to load up on 1st round rookies with guaranteed money and other teams with cap will have to clear the minimum, which is going to be 90% next season I think. So maybe Turk and some assets gets it done. If not both Turk and Duhon would be a nice 14 million expiring for some team in the future.

we lose Watson

we get a backup point, and we sweeten the trade deal by “saving” orlando from 2 bad contracts and we keep our bench largely intact. If we end up keeping Turk and Duhon, its sets us up to give a team a 14 million in expirings in in the 13/14 season.

In my GM vision, Orlando responds, post howard, by trading away Jameer Nelson and uses Watson as a stopgap in order to save salary. I also envision the Bulls Turk/Duhon together to get a high salary guy, someone like Monte Ellis or Kevin Martin, that we consider a misfit to pair with an eventual lineup that has hopefully a power forward platoon of Mirotic and Gibson to go along with Rose/Howard.

That argument is ridiculous.

People act like there is a finite amount of attention G-d can give out, and if he cares about a basketball game somehow that takes away some of his time from a starving kid in the Sudan or something. It’s G-d you’re talking about, he can do as many things as he wants.

Whether or not you’re a believer, I hate when people say stuff like that. Presuming to think that “G-d has more important things to do” is just stupid, as that assumes G-d is like us and has a schedule.

That's ridiculous.

You’re assuming you know the ramification of that game on each and every person around the world. To assume that you know what G-d cares about anything is the stupid thing, really. If you’re a non-believer, that’s fine. But if you do (really) believe in G-d, then there’s no reason to think that G-d’s fingerprints aren’t on everything that happens in the universe. How do you know that in some way, shape or form, the outcome of a game isn’t a vehicle G-d would use to change someone’s life? Assuming to understanding the manner in which a higher power works is idiotic.

You can't help but go back to this
“We don’t want to talk about other teams’ players but obviously there are situations out there that you know that you have to look at,” Paxson said Wednesday on “The Waddle & Silvy Show” on ESPN 1000. “The other part of it is you hope those types of players want to come here. Sometimes, at least what you hear from agents, it doesn’t have anything to do with basketball. It has more to do with marketing and whatnot. Those are the things you don’t have under control when an agent gets involved and doesn’t even want to talk to you. All you do is keep trying, and we certainly will.”

I'm starting to think Orlando is holding things up, not Dwight (or his agent).

Even if he doesn’t want to come to the Bulls, he appears to be willing to go to several different teams, of which many would provide Orlando with some really nice assets to keep them competitive (especially in the EC).

Whether it’s because Otis Smith doesn’t want to pull the trigger, or his hands are tied by the ownership who probably wants to keep Howard through the All-Star game, I don’t see Orlando pursuing any deal for Howard any time soon. However, if the Magic keep losing the way they are, the FO may have to face the ‘trade Dwight’ scenario much sooner than planned.

by bryield on Jan 30, 2012 12:08 PM CST up reply actions

I've heard that the Magic are afraid of Dwight in Orlando at the all-star game in a new uni

That might hurt.
Of course it’s absolutely ridiculous, although inline with everything that comes with Orlando’s organization.

by Huey on Jan 30, 2012 10:13 PM CST up reply actions

There's no doubt in my mind Pax would make the trade if Dwight wanted to be here

He’d be a fucking moron not too. The question is, will he be willing to put his ass on the line a bit to try and make something special happen?

Injuries. Fuck.

by Juiceboxjerry on Jan 30, 2012 12:15 PM CST up reply actions

Maybe I'm being naive about the Bulls FO

but I really believe they would be willing to pull the trigger on a deal that nets Howard. I think the bigger issue (as noted above) is Orlando, that is, I don’t think they’re ready to deal him.

And, all homerism aside (I think), the Bulls can offer what Orlando is reportedly looking for: (a) assets to stay competitive right now, and (b) relieve ‘bad contracts.’ I’m not going to regurgitate hedonism bot’s post from above, but that package has to be pretty attractive to Orlando.

by bryield on Jan 30, 2012 12:22 PM CST up reply actions

You'd have to believe Thibs would be salivating at the idea.

I’m sure he’d be able to find numerous ways to mask Carlos’ defensive liabilities with Howard back there.

by Option27 on Jan 30, 2012 12:25 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, I always hated that opinion
“I’ve said this all along about Carlos: Carlos has been one of the best defensive rebounders in this league for a long time,” Thibodeau said Thursday. "So when you evaluate our starters, defensively I thought overall, it was good. It can be better. We play a collective defense; he’s part of it.

With a guy like Dwight in there,

I’d rather have Taj or Omer start at the 4. That’s an all-time great defensive frontcourt with a damn good scoring center. If they keep Booz while trading for Dwight, move Booz to the bench or Amnesty him outright.

by dakoose on Jan 30, 2012 2:19 PM CST up reply actions

you keep boozer starting and keep Gibson as your 4th quarter option

I think the attention Rose and Howard would draw away from the rest of the bulls players would be a boon offensively for Boozer and I think it would reflect defensively, as I’m sure long minutes of trying to play Howard one on one (which Im assuming teams would do since Rose would burn them with light defensive pressure) would gas the frontcourts of other teams, and in turn make it better for Boozer when he is on defense.

I saw Boozer doing some Kurt Thomas esque defensive moves, if he can keep that up, and if players are getting tired from getting brutalized by Howard, I think Boozer will look better.

If the Bulls trade say Noah, Deng, Taj, Charlotte pick, possibly Asik or Brewer, etc.

for Howard(and Turkoglu no doubt), and he doesn’t re-sign with the Bulls…GarPax should NEVER show there faces in public again. EVER! To break up a championship calliber team(and the Bulls are one) to get Howard without a guarrantee that he will re-sign with us would be criminally stupid. At no point has he ever expressed the slightest real interest in playing for the Bulls. I’ve waited long enough for the Bulls to build a team that can once more challenge for titles. The Bulls aren’t a 2nd tier team that just needs that one superstar to be elite. The Bulls are already elite. If I were a 76’ers fan I’d be all over this. But the Bulls are dealing from strength and don’t need to take that huge of a risk.

The idea that once Howard wins a title with the Bulls he’ll now eagerly re-sign with them is baseless IMO. First this relies completely on the Bulls winning a title THIS year inspite of all the midseason changes that a trade for Dwight implies(figuring out the remaining players new roles, signing new bench players to fill out the roster, not to mention integrating Howard himself). I believe that such a trade makes a Bulls championship much less likely THIS year. It’s in FUTURE seasons that he’d make championships much MORE likely. Further, he no doubt realizes that Rose- Howard combination with an season to get used to each other and for GarPax to properly fill in the roster would be a great team. Yet he has expressed ZERO real interest in such a scenario. He doesn’t want to play for the Bulls, he just doesn’t. If he ever changes his mind I hope GarPax won’t be afraid to pull the trigger, but until then…

Get ready for that 7th banner Chicago...it's '90-'91 all over again!

I say you hold on to Gibson.

noah is a dynamic center, and asik is a traditional big tough center, which is why the tandem works really well, but with howard you kind of get both, minus noah’s ballhandling.

A Gibson/Howard frontcourt will be just nasty. And Gibson has the length and speed to give guards nightmares, something Asik can’t do.

Say Howard has a 50% shot of staying with us

Our future championship equity still goes up by a fair amount.

This is the NBA. While there are exceptions, championships are won by putting together great players, not by retaining above average players who are paid what they’re worth. The guys massively underpaid in this league are the Roses, Howards, and LBJs and that’s where value and title equity originate.

Not trading for Howard likely condemns us to six years of being the 1990s Pacers. Which isn’t a bad thing, but it means getting a ring is an uphill fight.

Look to the Lakers as an example, they have always known what to doin these spots. Have some guts and don’t overvlue what you have, the classic mistake of both real and fantastic GMs.

I think keeping Luol in that potential trade is more important than anything.

Plus, I doubt the Magic want the size of both Noah and Deng’s contracts; they will have to rebuild. I think a move like Taj, Noah, Ronnie, our 1st rd pick and the Charlotte pick would be more than enough. The deal won’t work in terms of money, but I see that being a more realistic type trade. Dwight WILL leave Orlando, that is almost certain. Plus, look at that deal and tell me if any team has put a better one on the table?

Put down Korver for 3.5 3’s per game if Rose and Howard are collapsing the defense non-stop.

Sadly, there is no way you could keep Deng in the deal. Noah would need to be included for Orlando. It would be amazing if you could keep Asik or Gibson.

by JustAnotherFan on Jan 31, 2012 5:31 AM CST up reply actions

Not really, because that doesn't get a team closer to competing for it all.

Those guys are all pieces and the Charlotte pick, as valuable as it may be, is still not gonna bear fruit until a few years from now. If the Lakers are willing to send over Bynum, and he’s willing to sign in Orlando and be their guy, that’s a deal Orlando needs to take because he could actually be a guy you build around.

The Bulls have a pretty good, deep group of players to deal from, but they don’t really have any young all-star caliber guys to deal.

by dakoose on Jan 31, 2012 10:21 AM CST up reply actions

It really depends on what they're looking for

Although with the combination of young/old players, and draft picks that the Bulls can offer, they can be very flexible in that regard. And if Orlando really wants to skew younger, don’t discount the possibility of a three team trade

Some team with more to offer will gamble on him to see if they can get him to sign. Who will take that chance?

Say if the Bulls did do that, and Howard split after the season, they’d have a gutted roster and a bunch of cap space, right? Whom would they pursue? Who else is on the market this summer?

Larry Coon on the various Howard scenarios

LINK HERE

Bulls-pertinent parts:

Any other team interested in Howard would be contemplating an enormous risk — giving up significant assets to acquire the franchise center, only to face the distinct possibility of losing him as a free agent. The Bulls are one team that would be very interested, but only if they could have Howard as more than just a short-term rental. Howard originally expressed reluctance about relocating to Chicago, but may now be open to the idea.

And:

If Smith does not make a trade by the March 15 deadline, this would be the only way to get some value in return for his departing All-Star. However, this scenario comes with a significant risk — Howard only needs a sign-and-trade if his preferred destination doesn’t have the cap room to sign him directly — the Lakers, Clippers and Bulls would need a sign-and-trade, but the Nets and Mavs wouldn’t. Why would Smith want to bank on the availability of a sign-and-trade when half the teams on Howard’s A-list could cut out the middleman and deal with Howard directly?

And:

Finally, the Magic could trade Howard to a team that meets his approval on or before March 15. He would exercise his early-termination option in June, then re-sign with that team as a free agent. Since Howard’s Bird rights are traded with him, he would be eligible for the largest possible contract, with five years and 7.5 percent raises ($89.1 million total).

This would be Howard’s preferred option, since he gets both the team of his choice and the best possible contract. However, the team that acquires him would be assuming a significant risk — once Howard becomes a free agent, his team cannot prevent him from signing elsewhere. A team like the Nets or Lakers would want assurances from Howard’s people that he would re-sign before they commit significant assets to a trade. The Nets may have received this sort of assurance. The Lakers, Clippers and Bulls have not.

The most likely scenario, therefore, is that Howard will be in a Magic uniform for the Feb. 26 All-Star Game, but we will see him in a new uniform soon afterward. Howard’s best option is to become a free agent this summer — wherever he ends up — so we can expect a certain amount of panic in his new team’s front office in July as he contemplates his future — deciding whether to re-sign or move on.

"Smith stripped. Smith stopped! Smith stopped again by Pippen!"

So basically he can wait until he opts out then sign with New Jersey, or the Magic trade him there

after the all star break for fear of losing him for nothing. OR he comes to his senses and accepts a trade to da Bulls, signs the extension and Rose and Howard wreak havoc on the league. Something tells me he’s gonna end up wearing a Nets Jersey. I’m really kind of curious what his thought process is. I mean Dwight and Dwill, with Stephen might compete, but how do you pass up a chance to team up with Derrick Rose.

It’s either an Ego thing, or marketing. But for someone that’s so religious, he should realize the whole Pride before the fall saying. As for marketing, he’ll get plenty in Chicago, and championships help bring even more money. Whether he’s with Adidas, Nike, Reebok, whoever. I just get the feeling that Otis might feel pressure from the owner, and the fan base, and not want to let Howard go for nothing resulting in Howard ending up on the Nets.

On the J.R. Smith bandwagon until otherwise advised.

I was thinkng, it kinda sucks that MarShon Brooks turned out to be a player

because he gives the Nets one more useful piece than they were thought to have prior to the year. Lopez, Brooks and picks is a lot more enticing than Lopez and picks. I could see the Magic going for that offer

I'm not trying to read tea leaves

but this does make me wonder if the FO is seriously pursuing a Howard trade, especially if multiple front court players would have to be given up to get him. Or, it could be as simple as expanding the rotation in light of the injuries so far.

Przybilla’s agent, Bill Duffy, confirmed that the center is weighing offers to sign with either the Bulls or Miami Heat, perhaps as early as this week. The Tribune reported the Bulls’ interest in Przybilla in early December.

say Howard stays with Orlando for the season.

when can the Bulls amnesty? They could amnesty Boozer (or Noah… but… I mean… yeah), and have the room for Howard, no?

no.

Look
I didn’t want to offend anyone by saying the "f" word or generalizing my statement to any particular sex by saying "gays" or lesbians" or "bi’s" so "homos" is the most "politically correct" term. I’m just trying to be more tact in a tactless blog.

Nope. Assuming the Bulls keep Omer and CJ,

the Bulls are at 78 million next year including Rose’s extension. If they Amnesty Booz they get down to ~63 million, which is still over the cap. The Bulls won’t be under the cap for a while, assuming no major trades.

Yeah

And even if they have some cap room, it won’t be enough for Dwight’s huge contract. They’d have to drop a crapload of salary and quickly.

just for laughs

Bulls do a sign and trade with Orlando this offseason. Bulls give Boozer to Orlando. Just to see Spoelstra’s facial expression, Thibs lines up Howard, Noah, Omer with Deng at the 2.

OK, that was fun. Back to reality.

This is obviously a no-go

but there is some hope that given LOLOtis Smith is the GM and the Magic owner is 175-years-old and wants veterans to play for him for the two months before he enters hospice, that Boozer could be part of a package given to Orlando. Still tough to see how he wouldn’t get better offers elsewhere, though.

Never going to happen

Dwight will never be a member of the Chicago Bulls!

Here’s part of an article from ESPN insider showing possible Howard trades where the Magic don’t necessarily “lose” (the other 2 were the nets and Lakers (with the Rockets involved)

To Chicago: Dwight Howard
To Orlando: Joakim Noah, Taj Gibson, Jimmy Butler, C.J. Watson and Charlotte first-round pick

Unlike the other two teams, the Bulls are legitimate title contenders right now and don’t need Howard, thus weakening Orlando’s leverage in a possible deal. Noah, Gibson and Watson are solid players, Butler is a quality rookie, and Charlotte’s pick could be a top-10 player in a couple of years, so the return isn’t terrible here. Still, this type of move is a traditional rebuilding play, and it would spell a couple of very bleak years for the Magic.

Still, a deal with Chicago isn’t necessarily a loss for the Magic. If they can add a Luol Deng-for-Turkoglu swap, they would unload a big contract while adding an All-Star, and the deal suddenly looks far better. With the Bulls in such a strong position this season, however, that outcome seems unlikely.

Obviously we would likely not deal Deng, but the offer as posted looks decent
