It looks like a risky move

if he plays well thru pain, it’s ok
If at some point he can’t handle he may be too close to the playoffs for surgery

by JustAnotherFan on Jan 24, 2012 2:07 PM CST up reply actions

I'm not a doctor, but I Googled it.

If they can tell it is severe but can’t tell whether it needs surgery, they usually immobilize it for a week then look at it again. So, tune in again next week.

But....but....

but……ok I’m done. Doesn’t Kobe have the exact same injury?

by KCinIL on Jan 24, 2012 2:06 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, but on his shooting hand.

So, all in all, this is not so awful.

they are stretching of the ligaments...

sprains can occur with/without ligament damage. This is obviously ligament damage and its pretty bad. However, its possible to play thru it (e.g. kobe)

by Geo4MVP on Jan 24, 2012 2:11 PM CST up reply actions

I'm not either

Actually neither is Will Carroll, but his dad is and he does this for a living so I defer to him.

Here's the medical site he linked to

http://www.radiologyassistant.nl/en/42764e8fe927e

I can’t find anything there that says all sprains are tears. I think Carroll’s confused sprains with strains. First of all, the difference between a strain and a sprain is that you strain a muscle while you sprain a ligament. All strains are slight tears of muscle fiber, but not all sprains involve tearing a ligament.

Pat Riley is the devil.

From wikipedia

A sprain is an injury in a joint, caused by the ligament being stretched beyond its capacity. A muscular tear caused in the same manner is referred to as a strain. In cases where either ligament or muscle tissue is torn, immobilization and surgical repair may be necessary. Ligaments are tough, fibrous tissues that connect bones to other bones. Sprains can occur in any joint but are most common in the ankle and wrist.

But when guys miss a week they are usually marked as day-to-day

Hopefully he can play through it without too much pain...

His defense will still be valuable, but his offensive production (shooting at least) might drop significantly..

thats why he's been on the trading block for the last two years right

Cause Memphis has such an overabundance of 20 pt scorers that they can trade OJ for a pittance

In his first 2 years, he had 36 and 31 games with points over 20…
the last two, 10 combined…

I wouldn’t say he’s a lock to drop 20 any given night

Don't know what games your watchin

When Memphis locks down and makes run Mayos on the court for it. Is he Tony Allen, of course not, I never said that. His arguement was he can’t gaurd LeBron cuz of his height, height doesn’t matter. If you don’t wany Mayo, that’s fine. That dude could help us out right now, and he’s not a defensive liability and would actually make LeBitch have to work hard on his defense.

We're a team defense anyways

So it doesn’t matter alot. But Rose, Rip, and Mayo on the offensive end would casuse a shit load of teams(there are more teams than the Heat) fits. He can play 3 when Rips on the court, play 2 when he’s not. Come off the bench, whatever. Point is it would be a huge upgrade for giving up a late draft pick.

He was actually one of the most effective post scorers in the league last year, according to Synergy. He’s struggled this year, though.

Here's a lengthy article on Granger's struggles this year

http://outsidethearc.com/2012/01/09/whats-going-on-with-danny-granger/

From there:

Granger’s main problem so far this season is that he’s been extraordinarily ineffective on two specific types of plays on which he was extremely effective last year: post-ups and pick-and-rolls. His 1.15 points per possession (PPP) on post-ups ranked 7th in the NBA last season according to Synergy Sports Technology and his 0.84 PPP out of the pick-and-roll ranked 62nd, which still placed him in the top 15% of all players.

At this rate, with all these injuries in the league, the Bulls will win the title come June.

Of course, CJ Watson will be the Finals MVP in a showdown with the Kyle Lowry-led Rockets.

“I really feel like we have a very good chance of doing something special,” Deng said. “I feel that without the surgery I will be fine. I just know what I can and can’t do with it. I think I will be very effective out there. There will be days where it’s sore. We’re going to try to control how sore it gets. Everybody’s body responds differently. I’m very confident I’ll be able to handle it.”

(I have no idea if back spasms are near as bad as Rose’s and Deng’s injuries)

Hopefully it’s not too bad to the point where we won’t see him for months or the playoffs even, but the team is deep enough to where, if he needs surgery and can come back in time for the playoffs, then I would personally take the surgery, just get it done and over with…

Dwyer: Deng’s bad break could be a good thing for the Bulls

LINK HERE

Deng has earned this (tough) break. Now give him a chance to help his team earn its first championship in 14 years. Let him heal. Relying on Dr. Kobe Bryant for advice will get you nowhere.

Of course, the key word is "could."

It COULD be a good thing, Dwyer says, if Thibs and the org actually lets these guys rest every so often.

I think this will be Ronnie’s time to shine. With the way Rip has been dishing, and with Ronnie’s improved catch-and-shoot ability, I think he will have Luol proud. Deng’s a competitor, so he’ll be back when hes ready.

Timetable if Surgery

Is there any reliable source telling us how long he would be out if he had surgery? I know a lot of people are searching Google, but I’m looking for someone associated with this particular injury to say it will take X weeks to recover.

I ask because I feel like this must be a long recovery time if he’s avoiding surgery. If this is something that takes 6 weeks, it’d be incredibly stupid not to do it. But the fact they are avoiding it makes me think surgery means the end of his season.
