Stephen A Smith: Magic have spoken to the Knicks about Dwight Howard for Amar'e Stoudemire and Tyson Chandler

Stephen A Smith on the radio:

As I told you a little bit earlier in the hour, I have some news to report about your New York Knicks. The Orlando Magic, I will preface my statement by telling you that they have categorically denied this, but my sources tell me that they have inquired about Tyson Chandler and Amar'e Stoudemire going to Orlando for Dwight Howard. Let me confess to you that I'm torn. From a basketball standpoint, it would seem you do that trade in a heartbeat. You don't teach seven-feet and you don't teach the dominate and the skills that Dwight Howard has. But I like Tyson Chandler. I like the fact that he rebounds and defends."

i think he meant Chandler defending and rebounding are "good enough"

the way i took it, is they can roll with chandler at the 5 because of the way he defends and rebounds.

Let us cavort like the Greeks of old! You know the ones I mean.

well its orlando who would be stupid to take on Stat/chandler

I think the nuggets fleeced the knicks in the Melo trade, and I think its ok to roll with chandler instead getting fleeced again in a trade with Orlando

id say amare is easier to sell to the fan base

talent wise yeah id say those are fairly equal packages but which one do you think will sell to the fan base better?

amare or booz?

By popular demand I am putting a moratorium on the Melo talk until the Knicks win the title in June.

Amare's uninsurable knees ain't going to the magic

ESP with them paying Arenas what 65m to not play.

Gotta love the new York factor and rumors.

I think Boston might take a chance with amare’s uninsurable knees (and eye issues) bc they still have their amnesty clause, but no way Orlando does that, it’s smarter for them to let him go a la Shaq(which they won’t do).

The kid's out of this world. He's got Allen Iverson speed, Jason Kidd's vision, Chauncey Billups' shooting ability and Michael Jordan's athleticism. How do you guard that? - Pacers coach Frank Vogel.

Well, we do offer more in terms of (deal-able) young assets than most of the other teams in contention for Dwight.

The Lakers have Bynum, but he probably won’t sign long term with Orlando. The Clipps won’t trade Griffin, the Nets only have Ilgauskis 2.0 and the Knicks have no young talent. we can at least offer them Mirotic, one of our young bigs and the Charlotte lottery pick in a deal.

by dakoose on Jan 23, 2012 2:58 PM CST up reply actions

Yr dramatically overrating lopez

If u call him ilgauskas—big z was solid for yrs, Lopez puts up some mostly high o numbers on god awful teams—tho I guess he’s relatively young and hurt so that’s a young big z connection

lopez is underrated at this point

he can’t rebound and he’s probably more of a 4, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t a good player. he just has holes in his game

Noah and Boozer may not be quite as good as Amare and Tyson, but they're not significantly worse either

They make less $, and Noah is 3 years younger than Tyson. The Bulls can also spice up the package in ways the Knicks can’t by throwing in Mirotic and the Charlotte pick.

nice but he seems to be trying to stay in better shape so we should atleast acknowledge an effort.

by ChicagoStyle on Jan 24, 2012 12:18 AM CST up reply actions

Not if Howard won't consider playing here

Which remains the biggest obstacle of all. IF the Magic are indeed talking to the Knicks, then that is likely because they think he would accept a trade there. Which makes sense given his desire to be the next Kazaam.

Sadly, my self worth is almost entirely based upon the outcome of the previous night's Bulls game.

by Juiceboxjerry on Jan 23, 2012 11:12 PM CST up reply actions

Well not necessarily

There is the option of trading for Howard without a guarantee that he’ll sign an extension and hoping you can talk him into staying. If the price was, say, Deng + Noah + Asik+Mirotic+picks, I’m not trading for Howard unless I know he’s staying, because if he bolts, we’re pretty fucked for the next 2-3 years.

On the other hand, if the asking price is only Boozer + Noah, I’ll take that gamble and trade for Howard. If he bolts, oh well, at least we rid ourselves of Boozer’s contract before it really becomes an albatross. Thrusting Taj and Asik into starting roles eliminates our depth, but make a couple moves to address that (a lot easier without Boozer/Noah on the books), and we’re really not much worse off than we are now, when you consider how average Boozer and Noah have been this year.

Pat Riley is the devil.

by Poloplaya14 on Jan 24, 2012 2:22 AM CST up reply actions

Losing boozer and noah

And having dwight leave, results in 25 mil of cap space, no

by Trey23 on Jan 24, 2012 7:43 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, trading for him even though we're not on his list is interesting

Although he’s gonna have to likely force a trade at the deadline for that to happen. And then we’d have to have the package that the Magic like the most

Even though it would. in theory, “fuck us for the next 2-3 years” if he didn’t re-sign, I’m not so sure about that. To me, it comes down to: do we have a better opportunity to win the title with him post-trade, as opposed to just standing pat. There’s no question we’d be better off long term, but this year, we may just be spinning our wheels, or even moving backwards. Then if he left, we really are in trouble.

The thing is, with our current squad, if we don’t get it done this year, I could see a situation where we take a pretty sizeable step back. It would be the second year in a row that we couldn’t beat the Heat, and we really wouldn’t have many avenues to add new talent. So I could see the players starting to become disheartened, along with key guys like Boozer and Rip being a year older.

I think if I was Garpax, and the opportunity presented itself, I would go for it. They’re just not gonna have many other opportunities to pair Derrick up with a player of that caliber

Injuries. Fuck.

by Juiceboxjerry on Jan 25, 2012 4:53 AM CST up reply actions

That would be a dumb trade for Orlando

If you’re dealing Dwight, you better rebuild: how are you gonna do it when 3 years from now, you have over 30 million comitted to two average player (which I believe Amare and Tyson would be by then). Well, if anyone can pull it off, it’s Otis Smith.

Derrick+Joakim+Booz > Ray-Ray, The Wheelchair guy, that stupid martian and the punk who only messes with 6 foot foreign point guards and 3 point shooting centers

by poker_punker on Jan 23, 2012 1:41 PM CST reply actions

Agreed

Heck, the Nuggets probably got the best haul of talent in recent memory for a star player. They may even be just as good if not better than before (although I’d argue this was because Melo was overvalued), but I still highly doubt they win a championship. Plus, they have Gallinari as a RFA next year. He’s going to cost them quite a bit. My guess is the remain a good playoff team for awhile and then get screwed when they have to pay all those guys.

That’s the best case scenario. Most of the time, teams are going to end up being simply mediocre for quite some time. Why wouldn’t you just hunt down a team that can offer the most expiring or soon expiring contracts and draft picks. If Dwight really wants NJ, let him go there. A trade of Dwight+Hedo for Okur+Morrow+Farmar+Lopez+James+Brooks+picks would do it (sadly can’t get Humphries out of it until March 1 and even then he’d have to approve). NJ has nobody left on their roster but DWill, Howard, Humphries, and a bunch of crap. That said, they’d basically only have Howard and DWill on the books next year. One more piece plus role players and ring chasers should give them a pretty good team. From the Magic perspective, they get a solid young player in Brooks, maybe they can sign Lopez again (or not), and some draft picks. More importantly, they would only have like 20millionish on the books in two years. Hopefully one of those draft picks (or your own) is a good player and you can have some young talent to surround a veteran free agent with.

Trading for Amare and Chandler is dumb, especially in seeing how poorly they have worked together.

by DRoseO1 on Jan 23, 2012 2:25 PM CST up reply actions

I agreed mostly except for the part

where you said that “maybe” they were better than before: I think they are definitively better than they were last year with Melo. I think they are doing what Demps tried to do this offseason with the Hornets: Deal your star for 3-4 good players, make the playoffs this year to have some profit and next offseason deal 2-3 or 3 of them for an all-star.

Why exactly would Orlando do that deal?

They need young talent and/or lottery picks. Amare and Tyson aren’t changing the fortunes of that franchise; that team would be looking at first and second round exits. NBA hell.

will say this

i dont think you can win with melo..iverson took the blame and now stat but imo, melo just a ball hog

by Belize on Jan 23, 2012 5:05 PM CST up reply actions

If its wrong

u never get to predict anything on this forum and just bc u picked the knicks when the big stars went there means basically nothing now if u were to pick Dallas like last year or NJ and they win thats a big one but just bc u picked one of like 6 maybe 7 teams in the east that are actually good means nothing except u just got a 1/6 chance to be a douche a try to back up calling for melo all last year.

by ChicagoStyle on Jan 24, 2012 12:13 AM CST up reply actions

At least they win

when Melo scores 1 point in 30 minutes.

by cayal on Jan 24, 2012 8:37 PM CST up reply actions

I think this is the best the Magic can do.

Amare needs spacing and orlando offense is predicated on taking threes like amrae’s phoenix teams were and his knicks team was last season. Orlando would have more big man depth as well. Now for the knicks, if you want one man to fix all of your defensive woahs, Dwight is just the man to do that.

by Slick Ric on Jan 23, 2012 4:15 PM CST reply actions

I'm talking about amare though, he doesnt need nash, he was making it work with raymond felton last season.

Jameer is a good pick and roll player, this year he is playing like shit though but he did just state that all the dwight rumors have affected his game a little bit, so maybe he snap out of it.

by Slick Ric on Jan 23, 2012 9:51 PM CST up reply actions

Wait a minute

I thought under the new CBA a player who signed as a free agent like Tyson Chandler did can’t get traded by his new team for at least 6 months. Am I right or did I misread that rule in the new agreement?

They can save the world if they don't kill each other first.

the old rule was 3 months

but you’re right it’s likely Stephen A not knowing the rules.

for either team and thats alot riding on Davis being able to return to GS/Dallas series form along with enough touches going around for all three would howard be happy being the sidekick to Melo’ i dunno who knows with the way howard has been and noone knows what Magic r thinking Otis seems to be on the hot seat so u never know.

Bulls should beat that!

Still think we can offer a better package but thats just bc i think noah is better than STAT just bc his knees and horrible attitude towards defense and inability to play alot of minutes plus noah went to florida dunno if they would like him as much as STAT atleast fanbase-wise but honestly im leaning towards keeping depth for now.

by ChicagoStyle on Jan 24, 2012 12:15 AM CST reply actions

STAT really, really sucks. no defense, no rebounding, no passing and he can only score

if a good PG giftwraps points for him. have you seen jameer nelson this year? what a pile of old shit for orlando.

I could care less about anything any of these alleged “sources” has to say about what is going on right now. Seriously, how many different teams/scenarios have been tossed out here as to where he wants to go by various, anonymous sources? Is Dwight just sitting around, weegie/Ouija boarding this all out with his people then giving out whatever it’s saying?

This could be a story for The Onion: “Sources Close To Dwight Howard Reveal that 30 NBA Teams would love to sign Dwight Howard.”
