Introspection...
Melo style.
I'm getting too old for this shit...
It's unclear to me...
who is more pathetic, Melo or D’Antoni. That the Knicks are underperforming is no surprise, but the degree to which they have recently over-relied on Melo to play one-on-one (or two, or three) is remarkable.
It’s also deliciously ironic to see the Nuggets playing so much better than the Knicks, with Gallinari playing a pivotal role.

For some reason, people seem to be giving D'antoni a pass because he doesn't have a pg
And while I agree they weren’t gonna live up to Knicks’ fans lofty expectations without better guard play, come on now. They’ve been getting beat by scrub ass teams AT HOME. They have two superstar level players, and a borderline All Star in Chandler. you can’t attribute all this fail to not having a pg.
It’s a combination of things. Melo and Stoudemire are a poor fit for eachother. Melo is a poor fit for D’antoni. Not having a (at least) decent pg is ridiculous when D’antoni is the coach. And D’antoni has done a poor job of fitting the pieces together.
Sadly, my self worth is almost entirely based upon the outcome of the previous night's Bulls game.

So has the front office and, especially, Dolan.
He took his what to where?!
no question about it...
he probably deserves the greatest scorn.

dolan cares about name draws only
thats why he gutted a better team. i cant even blame him, he’s clearly just not thinking basketball wise

Yeah, Pringles definitely needs to get blame for this.
He has plenty of talent on that team; whether or not there are issues with fit, they shouldn’t be getting knocked around the way that they are.
i don't know why
but i imagined this being said by the philosoraptor

Why not? Why can't I take less shots?

As much as I'd love to shit on melo right now...
It’s not his fault the Knicks are sucking. D’Antoni’s asking way too much out of him.
Pat Riley is the devil.

I sort of agree, but I think Melo also bears a large responsibility for this too
without a true PG, the Knicks (and D’Antoni) are asking Melo to play more of the point forward role, but most of the time, Melo will call his own number instead of passing to the open man. There is no justification for Melo to shoot 30 times in a game while Amare shoots 9 times.
Another problem is that their 3-pt shot just arent falling for them. I havent watched too many Knicks games to see if a problem with their offense and spacing, or is it just bad luck. Even without Gallinari there to shoot 3’s, their holdovers from last year (Bill Walker, Toney Douglas, and Landry Fields) are all shooting considerably worse from the 3-pt line than last year.
Well what I'm saying is that Melo's a scorer first, plain and simple
He’s just not a point forward. He’s actually a pretty good passer when you make it easy for him (i.e. get him the ball on the wing or in the post where it’s a lot easier to read where the help is coming from), but he just doesn’t have it in him to run the offense, and it’s D’Antoni’s fault for putting him in a position where that’s what he has to do. It’s also on the front office building a roster where Mike Bibby (who’s no better than Mike James right now) is the best PG. However, let’s not forget about Baron Davis. If he comes back healthy and in shape, he could have a huge impact for the Knicks.
Pat Riley is the devil.
exactly. it's not really dantoni's fault, they just have a perfectly wrong combination of circumstances right now

I'd argue that...
D’Antoni tends to under-perform no matter which tools are at his disposal.
by Paul Warfield on Jan 22, 2012 2:34 PM CST up reply actions
No there are ways to compensate for not having a true PG out there
Having Melo try to do everything isn’t the best of those ways, IMO.
Pat Riley is the devil.
For example, I actually think the triangle offense might do wonders for this team
Pat Riley is the devil.
Thats also why Melo is not a great player IMO
He has been basically the same player ever since he came into the NBA. At least LeBron worked on his post game this summer when he saw thats what his team needs. D’Antoni tried to make Melo a point forward last year as well, when he first came over from Denver. Yet, Melo didnt even try to improve that aspect of his game over the summer.
If you want to say that D’Antoni is asking too much of Melo, thats fine. But if the Knicks want to be a contender, then more should be asked of Melo.
there was a lockout all summer. there was no dialogue between coach and players
d’antoni didnt announce he wanted to run the offense through melo until like during the one week training camp. thats not melo’s fault or d’antoni’s fault. thats lockout basketball for you.
By popular demand I am putting a moratorium on the Melo talk until the Knicks win the title in June.

There are so many things wrong with this team.
-Melo taking 30 shots per night
-D’Antoni not being able to run a competent offense
-D’Antoni not being able to get Amare and Melo to work well together
-The players seem despondent and have little attention when D’Antoni talks
-Their game plan every game seems to be “Go to Melo”
I could go on.

sigh... it was a mistake getting melo...
they gave up too much talent for melo and even if they had sloan as their coach, they still wont be as good as the bulls or heat.
by Geo4MVP on Jan 22, 2012 1:49 PM CST up reply actions 1 recs
disagree
they get baron back. get a real coach. say phil jackson or someone with a system that melo would thrive in and you have a team thats a dangerous out in the playoffs. melo and amare are still two of the best scorers in the game and they need a system that plays to their strengths
By popular demand I am putting a moratorium on the Melo talk until the Knicks win the title in June.
also that team they had before melo id say was at best a second round team
i think you get baron back healthy and give them a real coach with a different system and you have a team that can give miami fits because you have two guys who can point for point with james and wade.
and they also present tons of problems for us because our defense which is almost like a hybrid zone seems to often get killed by three point shooting teams that catch fire
By popular demand I am putting a moratorium on the Melo talk until the Knicks win the title in June.
You are expecting washed up Baron Davis to help this team out? He would be our fourth best option at the point. The guy doesn’t start over any other starting PG in the league.
That NY hype machine has it’s teeth into you. I keep reading these articles on how the Knicks are waiting to be saved by Baron fucking Davis. He couldn’t elevate a rec league team.
by metalkiwis on Jan 22, 2012 5:51 PM CST up reply actions 1 recs
You're underestimating Baron
He’s still been a very solid PG the last couple years. I can only speculate as to how healthy and in shape he is, but if he is healthy and in shape, he should be able to help them a lot, even if it’s only because the alternative for them is Mike Bibby.
Pat Riley is the devil.
by Poloplaya14 on Jan 22, 2012 7:09 PM CST up reply actions 2 recs
Mike Bibby is almost the same player. Used to be solid but fell off the planet the last two years.
OK I just looked at some simple stats. Dude has not performed in five years. If he was not healthy for five straight years, why all of a sudden. It is not 2007 and Barron Davis is not an NBA starting PG. For any team. I think we could very easily come up with 50 PGs in the league better or more valuable to the Knicks than BD will be.
I think you just remember how decent he was.
come on now i know barons been injured and was hidden away in cleveland for a year
but hes not that terrible. granted we are talking about a healthy baron here. remember the game he played against miami last year where cleveland won and he basically went off against them? baron seems to be one of those guys who really gets up to play when he has motivation to do so and i would think playing in the garden and reviving the knicks would be a good start.
if hes anything even close to healthy trust me the knicks are going to be dangerous.
By popular demand I am putting a moratorium on the Melo talk until the Knicks win the title in June.
He has always been a lazy player. But you are right he did his best when he was motivated. I honestly think he lost his motivation when his boy Cuttino left the game. Barron had not been the same since.
No I don’t trust that at all. They are pieces that don’t go together. NY would be better off trading Melo for Dwight., if there is any interest in Melo. Would probably take fields or Chandler too. But that would give them the imposing two great big man front court that is all the rage and a necessity in today’s NBA. Think of the duos that have been winning chips, Pau/Bynum, Chandler/Dirk, even going back a little to Shaq and Zo(OK that one was on the refs, but still…), Duncan and Timmy.
i just want to apologize for not getting your sense of humor until right now

I'd blame Dolan and Isiah Thomas first and foremost.
D’Antoni is known to be a stubborn guy, Melo didn’t mesh well with the Knicks last year so why not just fire him in the offseason? And if they wanted to keep him, then why did they go into the season with a fat and out of shape Baron Davis as their only competent point guard?
D’Antoni and Melo deserve blame, but Dolan is an absolute joke for forcing a trade no one else in the franchise wanted then sitting back and watching everything go to shit.
was listening to tbj podcast the other day
and they were speculating whether they might be keeping d’antoni for the sole reason of being able to lure nash over there in the offseason next year. sounds like something dolan would do
By popular demand I am putting a moratorium on the Melo talk until the Knicks win the title in June.
i think they need to can d'antoni and do everything in their power to lure phil jackson out of retirement
having melo run the triangle i think would be deadly if they put all those shooters they have out there with him.
melo unlike lebron has a very good post game and like poloplaya said above he can actually make good passes when you make it easy for him as opposed to asking him to create offense for others from scratch
By popular demand I am putting a moratorium on the Melo talk until the Knicks win the title in June.
also getting walsh kicked out was a dumb move

from sam smith's column:
Denver is 30-12 since trading Carmelo Anthony. The Knicks are not (they are 20-24).
so there’s that.
