Around SBN: Devils Beat Rangers, Head To Stanley Cup Finals

Around the NBA thread 1/19: TNT plus Hornets at Rockets.

Only three games tonight, and I doubt anyone is excited about the Hornets at the Rockets. But the other two games are nationally televised on TNT, and the Lakers at the Heat could be a classic, especially since the Lakers are relatively healthy and the Heat are without Dwayne Wade. I'm always interested in watching the Heat these days, just to think about how the Bulls can beat them. They beat the Spurs with defense and three-point shooting from James and Miller; let's see if the latter proves to be fool's gold. The Mavericks at the Jazz could also be good, since the Jazz always have a high-altitude home court advantage and the Mavericks are off to a slow start. Unfortunately, we also have to sit through Shaq sabotaging what was the best NBA coverage on TV, but at least we can continue to mock him, and maybe he won't be back next year. I can't believe I'm saying this, but let's go Lakers!

Actually looking forward to that second game

Wanna get a look at that Jazz team.

First game should be fun, but with the way the Lakers have looked offensively at times, I think the Heat are gonna fuck them up something fierce. Plus that Heat team looks even better without Wade. Get healthy soon Dwyane!

Kobe is not going to become a catch and shoot player. He wants the offense to go through him, not a point guard.

I'm tired of the media

laugh off anyone that says the Heat are better off without Wade. It’s not insane to look at the results and make an observation of the results. A GM with real balls would be on the phone with Orlando offering Wade for Howard or hell even Bynum or Eric Gordon

They'll always convert turnovers well

I’m referring to the reliance they’ve had on it this year, where it’s a huge percentage of their points. When Wade is in there, they’re running off of everything including missed and made shots.

plus, i think thibs still ahvent gotten the chance to practice the plays he developed in the offseason

i think the bulls offense wil lget better (knock on wood*) in terms of crisp ball movement, better lineup combinations, etc. Hopefully, this team can stay healthy (KNOCK ON WOOD*)

by Geo4MVP on Jan 19, 2012 8:12 PM CST up reply actions

The issue with the Bulls offense isn't so much scheme, its prioritization and utilization of possessions.

There are too many plays where the Bulls fool around with the ball for the first 15 seconds of the shot clock or where they end up with post ups or shots for guys who have no business attempting such feats. I’ve seen at least 7 or 8 times where Booz has the ball in the high post and calls for a post-up for Jo. What fucked up brand of basketball is that? Who in their right mind thinks a play should be called for Jo in the post? I’d rather have Rose, Lu or Booze try and do something with the ball then throw it down to Jo. Taj and his jumpers are another example; no shots outside of 10 feet. Post ups for Lu are also wasted possessions, more often than not.

by dakoose on Jan 19, 2012 8:17 PM CST up reply actions

Definitely can be fixed.

A more aggressive Rose can take care of that. If he attacks a bit more and becomes better at not picking up his dribble too soon, he can prevent some of the Bulls’ offensive issues.

by dakoose on Jan 19, 2012 8:26 PM CST up reply actions

They seem to go for more quick hitter plays

When Rip is in the starting lineup and healthy (in regards to your point of the Bulls problem on offense being so adamant in going deep into the shotclock).

by reppinchitown on Jan 19, 2012 8:30 PM CST up reply actions

They definitely get out on the break more with Rip.

But in the half court, even with Rip, they sometimes have a good ten seconds of dead time when they have Rip or Kyle run around screens, hoping he gets freed up. When it works, great, but when it doesn’t, it results in a pretty broken play.

by dakoose on Jan 19, 2012 8:32 PM CST up reply actions

A player whose best asset is moving off the ball

Will also sometimes stall a teams offense when they run a play for him curling off a screen (s) but I dont’t think thibs has Rip in the Ray Allen role too much (like he does with Korver) and tends to put him in a decoy role where he frees the middle up for an open look for Boozer and helps with the spacing off the team. He also can catch the ball off a screen and quickly dump off to a more open teammate inside and can run the side screen/roll which goes to my point of the Bulls being to use the versatility of Rip to get quicker and better looks for a score. But yeah I guess the offensive improvement I see when Rip starts is more due to the Bulls getting better in transition and on the breaks. still, I think having Rip will improve the half court offense significantly over the long run.

by reppinchitown on Jan 19, 2012 8:44 PM CST up reply actions

Rip aside, other Bulls need to learn to move well without the ball

What I'd hate to see is Lebron gaining confidence...

that he’ll continue to draw blocking fouls if he continues his “post up” (if you can call it that)

The Lakers are garbage

Kobe can talk tough, and score 40 against weak teams all he wants, they’re a first or second round out unless they make some kind of trade to add some talent

If the Bulls can't trade for Howard,

is there any way they can pull off a trade for Gasol? We have some legit pieces and if we manage to keep either Omer or Taj in the deal, Gasol and either one would make a damn nice frontcourt.

I'm assuming that's the 97 Playoff game in the WCF

Man Charles Barkley was so out of shape when he came to Rockets. You can see it at how he plays. Also this is the game that defines John Stockton’s career. don’t want to spoil it for you though in case you don;t know the ending.

Yeah he was still a top 3 rebounder in the league

But he started taking more jumpers and holding the ball too much on possessions when he came to Houston. He was an amazing athlete in his Philly and somewhat his Suns days so he could still blow by defenders but he couldn’t take the toll of playing down low as much due to injuries he had compiled. He was actually seriously contemplating retirement in like 95 or something (remember watching an interview of it on youtube),

yep, he is overrated

he shouldn’t have backed down. There are only like 8 great players in the league. Lebron, Howard, Rose, Durant, Kobe, Wade, Paul, Dirk – Griffin isn’t one of them. He has no idea what to do in the half court. VDN isn’t helping either.

by Basketball Smurf on Jan 20, 2012 12:27 AM CST up reply actions

For starters, Griffin is only a one way player, he contributes zero on defense.

Once you get into his offensive game, you see that once you get past the dunks/lobs, tip ins and put backs, you see that he doesn’t kill you any other way. To be blunt, he settles for both more and worse jumpers than Booz does. I see him regularly shoot J’s a foot inside the arch; there’s no excuse from that. Even when he gets buckets in the half court, he needs to break his man down starting 20 feet out. He shouldn’t have to resort to between the leg dribbles, followed by crossovers and spin moves to finish against the weak crop of 4’s we have in this league.

by dakoose on Jan 20, 2012 12:41 AM CST up reply actions
