I think it has to be some combination of market size and entertainment value

that has him essentially wanting to relocate to LA or NY, though the Dallas request is weird. It may be that Adidas really is a driving force in this process or maybe he wants to simply increase his “exposure” (or whatever) in a much bigger market.

But, I have to think that Orlando would request Griffin or Paul in a deal for Howard, even if it’s a sign-and-trade in the offseason. I mean, really, Orlando would be alright with getting Jordan and Bledsoe for Howard? Please.

At this point I really don't care about Howard

I’m not pissed at how he omits the Bulls as a team he wants to be at. Its because I’m convinced that Howard is not concerned at all with the game and is only out to market his name. He has refused to expand his offensive arsenal, I never hear about him getting on people in the huddles or anything, he is the most talented big man in the NBA but its by default because I’ve never seen him get tough or mad.

If he wants to waste away his talents just for pictures in magazine, chip and dip commercials, and autographs, let him do it. I just can’t wait to hear 7 years down the road when he doesn’t have his natural athletic ability anymore about how he should have won a ring a long time ago.

I don't see how the Clippers are able to pull off an adequate sign-and-trade for Howard

They’re at $50m and that’s assuming they could find a taker for Mo Williams (or he opts out). It’s basically assuming the Magic would take back Deandre Jordan and his (then) 3-year deal…which actually isn’t that impossible.

Although it would be fairly hilarious if the Bulls ended up landing him anyway.

no surprise to me

since lakers said thye will nto trade bynum for him, then u can bet he was going to choose the clips as his second choice. Idk wth Howard, but i can tell he doesnt care about winning.

by Geo4MVP on Jan 16, 2012 9:05 PM CST reply actions

idk wth is up with howard in regards to not coming to an organization that has the best chance to win it all. He has some odd reasoning.

I cant tell why hes denying a team like the bulls or even the better teams in the west like the denver nuggets or thunder. However, I can tell just by his option of cities that hes not serious about winning. Clippers, and the Mavs are great choices, but htey have no assets to trade for howard (I would think the magic would demand griffin, but the clips will never give him up).

While we're assuming things about Dwight,

from what we see of him on and off the court, he seems to crave love and attention and even in losing efforts will act the fool to try and endear himself to _. See the Bulls/Magic game a week or so back for that bizarre and stupid shtick with Glen Davis.

Being that DRose isn’t a recruiter and most certainly won’t get on his hands and knees for this fake version of Superman, I can see Dwight being hurt by that. Last night you had guys surrounding the TNT crew post-game and chanting we-want-Dwight! The Clips and Lakers are all over him and NJ seems to be courting him hard too. I feel like that, perhaps more than winning, Dwight wants to be wanted and won’t go somewhere like Chicago where the players and city won’t collectively bust a nut if he gets traded here.

That’s conjecture, but I’m trying to make sense out of why he won’t come here.

by dakoose on Jan 17, 2012 11:43 AM CST up reply actions

We have no intention of

I think everyone is missing a BIG point why he wont come to Chicago

I simply think it is because of Coach Thibs. Howard is a stubborn baby, who doesn’t like to be told what to do. A coach that demands the upmost from players and that doesn’t take any diva attitudes is a turn-off for some Diva superstars.

I think Howard would be afraid to have Thibs as his Coach because he would actually be forced to improve himself and pushed to his maximum. Howard is a complacent player, and this is blatantly obvious. It was well noted earlier that he doesn’t yell in huddles, he lacks a passion for the game, and he knows damn well if he coasted in the CHI Thibs would strait up bench his ass…..Point Blank I believe that is truly why Howard will not come to Chicago….and if you think about Howard, his persona, and his career you will come to realize the samething!!

Yes exactly playing for Thibs year round is much different then a very short stint with Coach K

Also, another point you have to realize is that Coach K is not the same Coach K from Duke, when he coaches Team USA.

He has many diva personalities to coach, and really has to be very wary of how he does coach/speak to them.

By that statement I am not saying that he just lets the players walk all over him, that is NOT WHAT i am saying whatsoever.

I am simply stating that he does tend to alter his affect/emotional responses that he shows/portrays to these grown adult men.

It is nowhere near the same Coach K who deals with young kids just coming into college, and that is why he is successful in coaching those large groups of NBA superstars.

Also, of course I am not saying that Dwight is technically “afraid” of Thibs, that is just ccompletely absurd due to a substantial age and size disparity. Now with that being said, I am saying he knows what Coach Thibs would DEMAND, not ask of him, and he knows that Thibs would not tolerate any BS or any type of ME first attitudes.

Dwight wants special priveledges, AND he wants to be treated like a MEGA-STAR/Celebrity. He wants that type of treatment from the Owner, the GM, the Front Office staff, the Head Coach, the coaches assistants, and all the way down to the ball-boys. Of course he would get it from the fans, no matter where he goes, but HE KNOWS he would NOT get that special treatment from Thibs and he KNOWS that more would be demanded from him from Thibs than from almost any other coach in the NBA.

That is my main point, and not the fact the he is actually “scared/afraid” of Thibs. Like I said previously, that assumption would just be absurdly ignorant!!

Sometimes I wake up grumpy; other times I let her sleep.

Love? Westbrook?

Love and Westbrook haven’t been signed yet, and there is no guarantee that they will be offered for the maximum, especially since they still might qualify for the Derrick Rose bonus. I think it is likely, however, that they will sign, and are just holding off to see whether they will qualify for the bonus.

by Tim S. on Jan 18, 2012 2:32 PM CST up reply actions

I have absolutely no sources on that but

I think Love and Westbrook are in different situations. Giving Love all he wants is a no brainer while giving Westbrook a Rose-like contract is something to think about. maybe WB wants to stay and Love doesn’t.

So...

Is basically Jordan+Mo Williams expiring contract+Bledsoe+Caron Butler’s shitty contract and some draft picks or Bynum+Metta’s shitty contract+McRoberts and some draft picks for Dwight and Hedo?

Lakers got this in a slide. I still don’t know what’s the big deal with DeAndre Jordan – good defense, fouls too much, no outside shot, no post moves. Am I missing something?

Yes and isn't it funny that LeBum would relate himself to Tebow

Of course, he did have some merit in his statements, but alot of his over-exposure is brought upon by himself and his “inner circle.” He and his “inner circle” has wanted and done everything he could to overhype himself since High School, yet once the publicity is negative suddenly he does not want it, typical “dish it out but can’t take it” mentality. Alot of Tebow being overhyped has mostly been strictly done by the media and the fans. He really has not done much of anything to antagonize people into making stories about himself, except being a consistent, successful, and positive role model for kids, his fellow professional athletes, and adults in general everywhere. He didn’t label himself as “King Tebow” or “The Chosen One,” instead his first major headline of being an NFL rookie was his hard work ethic and succombing to the worst haircut ever! So instead of “King Tebow” I think he labeled himself as “Friar Tebow” lol. all jokes aside point remains.

Also, LeBron and Tebow, much like you stated are extremely POLAR OPPOSITES. LeBum shows why some people arguably consider him the best player in the NBA through the first 3 quarters. Tebow shows why some people consider him arguably the worst QB in the NFL through the first 3 quarters. LeBum suddenly downgrades his game to 6th man chucker once the 4th quarter takes place, and Tebow upgrades his game to that of a great QB once the 4th quarter arrives.

LeBum is your typical choke artist playing his worst at key moments of BIG/significant games, and Tebow, excluding his last playoff game, suddenly becomes Steve Young once the bright lights come on for Big/Meaningful games.

Tebow has done nothing but basically just about win and lead his team in every HUGE game of his career (college and NFL), and LeBron has done nothing but CHOKE and lost his team games when the stage is set for him to dismiss those rumors.

LeBum suddenly forgets how to play basketball and like I said when the bright lights come on and the game slows down LeBron plays like an unsuccessful 6th man who chucks the ball up with reckless abandon or he plays like Keith Bogans, missing open shots if he takes them or just stands around and lacks confidence in himself so whenever he gets the ball he passes it or turns it over.

Funny though how he would relate himself, to someone whom he is completely and absolutely the opposite of.

by gooses on Jan 17, 2012 11:36 AM CST reply actions

I don't think that...

just because he doesn’t want to come to the Bulls that it means he doesn’t want to win. And also just because he lists a team, doesn’t make it possible. The Clippers aren’t going to trade Griffin for him, so they might as well get scratched.

by Dunker Von Smashalot on Jan 17, 2012 2:27 PM CST reply actions

At least he's open to adding more teams on 'the list'

I must ask cause no one else will

"He’s been watching them a lot. He’s intrigued by the Clippers," said the source, who is privy to the trade talks that have taken place between all of the aforementioned teams.

Has he not been watching the Bulls? At the time this report came out, they had the best record in the league, reigning MVP and COY. They’ve only played 5 home games where opponents are averaging 66.8 ppg.

What makes the Clippers intriguing and the Bulls an afterthought?

by Option27 on Jan 17, 2012 3:01 PM CST reply actions

They play in LA and the Bulls play in Chicago?

It can’t be the performance because the Clippers don’t really look all that good. Also, I’m having a tough time seeing what the Clips give up in the deal. Surely the Magic would require either CP3 or Griffin, no? I mean, there’s nobody else on that team who’s even close to a cornerstone player aside from those two, and please, nobody say DeAndre Jordan. Everyone else is either old or not very good.

Kind of related to this, but does anyone think

that maybe Rose isn’t willing to recruit any of these guys because they’re older than he is? I’m sure there are a lot of other reasons, and of course everyone would like to see Derrick do it by himself if he can, so maybe I’m just oversimplifying the matter. The age difference between Rose and Howard isn’t THAT significant, but I think it might be a factor. LeBron and Wade are quite a bit older than he is, as well.

It’s been noted that Rose is good friends and works out with Kevin Love and Russ Westbrook, both of whom are also 23. I’m not saying Rose would try to recruit either of THOSE guys when their contracts are up or what have you (getting Love would be nice, but I don’t think anyone wants Westbrick anywhere near this team), but maybe he makes friends with a rookie or younger player and recruits them in a few years.

I know this team is (some would say “supposedly”) built to win now, and if we do, all the better. But, say that doesn’t happen. Maybe Rose recruits someone when he’s in his prime (26 or whatever). I probably sound like a rambling idiot, but knowing how quiet Rose is (and if I were in his shoes, I’d be uncomfortable recruiting veteran players just like that), I can understand why he’d be hesitant.

But, I’m just an armchair psychologist. I don’t actually know anything, haha.

So apparently Sheridan is trying to "clarify" his story, but to me it just makes things more confusing:
sheridanhoops Chris Sheridan
Let me clarify something, even though it was clearly stated in yesterday’s story: #Clippers are on D.Howard’s wish list, not trade list.

Apparently others were just as confused about the difference between the two lists as I was, so he responded with this:

sheridanhoops Chris Sheridan
To tweeps asking: Trade list is teams your agent can talk trade with. Wish list is where you’d go as an unrestricted free agent.

Soooo, I still don’t really get it. Howard didn’t put them on his trade list, but he’d be willing to sign there even though they don’t possess the cap room to do so? Ok…

Feels to me like Sheridan got a few quotes from Dwight about liking the Clippers and decided to run with it in an attempt to create a bigger story than actually was there. Unless someone else could explain to me what he’s trying to say…

Sadly, my self worth is almost entirely based upon the outcome of the previous night's Bulls game.

If you’re Orlando, you want as many teams as possible to be on that list so that you gain some leverage. So either the Clippers are on his “Trade list” or they’re not even in the picture. The whole “Wish list” thing is what makes his report sound sketchy as hell

Even though I think this is a rediculous story

Its still kind of sad that the Clippers and the Nets are considered, by some, to be better destinations than the Bulls.

Those two teams will always be the red-headed stepchild in their home market, even with Dwight Howard.

by VaderMaul on Jan 17, 2012 9:54 PM CST reply actions

The Clippers are at least understandable

The Nets make no sense whatsoever. But honestly, you get the feeling that Howard has no clue what he really wants. It’s almost like he’s requesting a trade because other people have. This isn’t a Lebron/Melo/Bosh situation where they made it abundantly clear what their intentions were.

Sadly, my self worth is almost entirely based upon the outcome of the previous night's Bulls game.

by Juiceboxjerry on Jan 17, 2012 10:16 PM CST up reply actions

I can assure you that if Dwight gets traded here and wins a title, he will not leave.

Adding Dwight will only increase our chances to win an NBA title. Let’s say we win the championship this year with Dwight and Rose, do you think Dwight walks away from $30 Million and a chance to win more championships? I don’t think so. Chicago is a big market and the endorsement possibilities will be endless if he gets a ring. Once he gets a taste of being a Bull and all those circumstances, he will stay. I guarantee you that.

I also believe that GarPax will take a risk in acquiring the best center in the league. Nothing is being said right now because this will only create distraction for a team that’s been winning. But look for the Bulls to be a possible destination as the trade deadline nears.

Well, for this to even become a possibility a few things have to happen:

1) (and this is the most important, and probably least likely) The front office needs to grow a huge set overnight. Emptying the team’s assets, on a team that is already really freaking good, for a player that apparently has no desire to play for you, would take HUGE stones. The likes of which the front office has never even come close to showing in the past. These guys are the master of the slow build.

2) The Lakers would have to make it clear they they don’t want Dwight, hence: No Bynum. He’s the best trading chip out there, including us, and Dwight actually has them on his list. So they need to be out of the running.

3) Orlando would have to really like what we have to offer. Which is no sure thing. Otis Smith has proven that he is very bad at his job, so if he deemed that the New Jersey Nets, and Brook Lopez provided a brighter future for his franchise than a package built around Deng, Noah, Mirotic, some picks, and ditching Hedo, then we’re shit out of luck.

4) Howard would have to let Orlando know, prior to the trade deadline, that they have no shot of re-signing him. If he continues to flip flop, and give them hope that he might re-sign after the season, Orlando could just say “fuck it”, and play things out. I could ESPECIALLY see them doing that if that team continues to play as well as they have. We have no shot after the season is over because we’re not on his list.

I find all these things playing out in our favor EXTREMELY unlikely (particularly item #1), but I agree that it’s definitely something the Bulls need to consider if possible, because we very easily could win the title this year with Howard on the team, and one title is worth it no matter how much you have to give up

Sadly, my self worth is almost entirely based upon the outcome of the previous night's Bulls game.

The thing is.....

1. The Bulls FO emphasize that having a legitimate center and point guard is the blueprint to trounce the Heat. How’s having both the best center and point guard in the league. The Bulls will only have to give up Deng, Noah, Picks, and maybe Asik or Taj. If we lose Taj or Asik, we can explore in bringing Sheed also. I believe Brewer is good enough to start at SF, and Jimmy sliding in as the back-up.

2. The Magic FO have shown their desire that they want no part of Bynum. I think if the Magic wanted Bynum, then Dwight to the Lakers would had been a done deal by now.

3. NJ has no chance of getting Dwight on the trade deadline with the lousy package that they have, unless a third team is involved. But who would help the Nets?

4. He doesn’t have to tell them he’s not re-signing. Orlando knows Dwight is not staying. I would be shock if he’s not traded by the deadline, because once he becomes a FA, he will bolt to NJ or him and Deron will go to Dallas.

If the Bulls do pull the trigger their are many pros on why Dwight will stay.
1. Championship (Dwight on the Bulls will give us a better chance on winning the championship this year, and if we do win, it’ll increase our chances to keep him.)
2. $30 million (bird’s rights)
3. Chicago (big market)
4. Endorsement Deals (Adidas will have the opportunity to market the best duo in the NBA, how can you go wrong with that)
5. Thibs (Can turn Dwight into Bill Russell type of defender)
6. Boozer (Him and Dwight are really good friends, and I’m sure Boozer can urge him to stay in Chicago)
7. Derrick Rose (Last but not least, the reigning MVP. Being the man will not be an issue, because Rose is not a camera whore and only cares about winning. Him and Dwight have a good friendship and none of their egos will get in the way. Also, if he teams up with Rose, they can both can lead the Bulls to a dynasty and also prolong their playing careers)
6.

The Magic FO does want Bynum

It was the Lakers that refused to give up both Bynum and Gasol as requested.

As far as your reasons why Dwight would stay in Chicago, all of those reasons currently exist, yet Dwight doesn’t want to come here. If those reasons won’t convince him to come, there’s no reason why they’d convince him to stay. Clearly, we have no idea what Dwight values in his next team. Whatever it is, the Bulls don’t have it.

Since he cares about his image soooo much, I doubt he becomes a crybaby asshole.

He will play hard for sure, because if he acts like “LeBron James”, then he’ll lose some credibility and I’m sure he wouldn’t want that. The odds for us to win a championship increases by combining Dwight with Rose.

You can assure us of no such thing

All you can assure us of is that it would seem crazy to us to walk away in such a situation. What would actually matter, however, is what would seem crazy to Dwight.

Also, it is rather rash to assume that we would a title THIS YEAR by sticking Dwight on the remains of our team halfway through the season. I grant that the Bulls would probably win several championships if they could pair Rose and Dwight. Their chances would surely be greater in future years, however, after they had learned to play with each other and with the rest of their teammates.

no way

Dwight saw what that did to Lebron’s image and popularity…no way does he want to do that to himself

nah i doubt it

a) when howard does it. he’ll probably do it mockingly so people wont take it that seriously
b) everyone is going to still hate lebron and somehow say dwight did it the right way

By popular demand I am putting a moratorium on the Melo talk until the Knicks win the title in June.

They should, but they won't

If they do, it’s in their best interests to trade DeAndre Jordan too. Jordan is not a PF, and makes way too much to back up Howard who plays 40 minutes a night.

Depends on perspective

For basketball reasons yes
For ticket sales, I think no, Griffin is the life blood that is drawing the crowds. It is too dangerous to trade him away.

Why the Nets and Clippers?

Well the Nets, with its billionaire owner, intrigues Howard as he thinks that he will be spoiled and also the team will spend freely to bring as much talent to surround him with. It’s not the current Nets that intrigue him but the potential of being a star in New York and a friend of Jay Z. Clippers, he now only picked them as it satisfies his warm-weather fun time approach while potentially giving him an “easy” route to the Championship. That is why Howard at this point is fine waiting until free agency, as he will screw the Magic but also help his new team, not give away valuable pieces. Orlando is stupid not to try him now for some value because their is absolutely no way he stays there. I’m personally fine with him not coming here. It’s his loss and TBH I think his persona would kill off team chemistry and the development of the younger guys. I rather have Kevin Love then Howard. Although he is hugely talented, he carries to much baggage. The TO of the NBA, good for a rental but not for long-term because he’ll get “bored”.
