Kobe said after the game that Chris Paul & Derrick Rose are the only other players in the league with the same competitive edge that he has

Since I don't wanna get SHOULDABEENAFANPOST'ed, I'll editorialize here

Personally, I think all this talk about “most competitive player” is complete bullshit. I mean, how do we know that Luke Ridnour isn’t insanely competitive and hasn’t killed someone because they beat him in Scrabble?

But whatever, it’s still a backdoor dig at Lebron, and a complement to Derrick, so I will love hearing it, nonetheless.

Sadly, my self worth is almost entirely based upon the outcome of the previous night's Bulls game.

lol, right

The Clippers guys were harping on the whole “competitive” thing during the game too, and I found it very annoying then also. I mean, I’m sure Kobe and these guys are all competitive as hell, but more importantly, they’re fucking awesome, so that kinda helps.

Sadly, my self worth is almost entirely based upon the outcome of the previous night's Bulls game.

Fuck Rondo.

agreed. for instance, not to bring up another luminary from the 06' sonics, but i bet nick collison

is a hugely competitive guy. i think this because every time i watch him play i think to myself, “that guy’s a real asshole” even though hes playing by the rules and isnt showing up his opponents. but he runs around like a maniac, tries to kill people when he sets picks and fouls hard around the basket. im sure losing absolutely kills him, its just nobody except his mom cares.

Could example

And actually now that I think about it, I think Rondo and Collison are pretty analogous players. Neither one knows how to make a basket, but they both do the “little things” as well as anybody else at their positions. The difference is that Rondo gets hyped up by the media as one of the top PGs in the league while you could probably watch ESPN for months without hearing Nick Collison;s name brought up.

Pat Riley is the devil.

In the end, that's really nice

Kobe is not to say good things about anyone that is not on his team. And he is having a terrific year: 32 ppg at 33yo is awesome even if it’s just for a few games

by JustAnotherFan on Jan 15, 2012 11:20 AM CST up reply actions

He still takes the worst shots in the league

It seemed as if he wanted to score 40 again more than winning the game

by Option27 on Jan 15, 2012 2:05 PM CST via mobile up reply actions   1 recs

Yeah, there's no doubt he's a lot better this year than I expected he would be

but he completely hijacked that team last night. It was ridiculous, they weren’t even trying to run any sets, or get Bynum/Gasol the ball.

Sadly, my self worth is almost entirely based upon the outcome of the previous night's Bulls game.

Sometimes the knock on an otherwise great player

is lack of competitiveness.

Exhibit 1 : Rudy Gay.

That guy just does not maximize his talent. Certainly coming out of college that was the book on him.

It's still true

You’ll see first hand today.

I was thinking the exact same thing during their national televised game vs. the Knicks the other night. He’s an awesome athlete, but a lot of times he just looks like he’s walking around, not hustling, not looking to rebound unless it’s a play that takes little effort.

Is Kobe trying to say something about Dwight to LA?

I wasn't nitpicking what Kobe said, just the idea that there's 2 or 3 guys that are way more competitive than others

I don’t doubt that they’re incredibly competitive, but I think the only reason they’re noted for it is because they’re great players. For example, Tyrus Thomas always seemed incredibly competitive, but it manifested itself as stupid mistakes, and bad shots

Sadly, my self worth is almost entirely based upon the outcome of the previous night's Bulls game.

by Juiceboxjerry on Jan 15, 2012 2:20 PM CST up reply actions

I completely disagree

Imo, being competitive, and having the ability to channel that competitive nature into positive results on the floor are two entirely different things. Maybe Rose is more “disciplined” or “driven” than Thomas, but that doesn’t mean he’s more competitive.

And maybe Tyrus is a bad example, anyway. What about someone like say, Shane Battier? By all accounts he’s one of the hardest working guys in the league. He seems incredibly competitive as well. So why is he not included on Kobe’s list (or whomever’s list) as “most competitive”? (hint: he’s not good enough)

Sadly, my self worth is almost entirely based upon the outcome of the previous night's Bulls game.

I'm not seeing this....
being competitive, and having the ability to channel that competitive nature into positive results on the floor are two entirely different things.

That’s like saying that someone is a skilled cook but isn’t able to produce anything that taste’s good. If you’re only competitive on the floor, than you don’t have the competitive edge that Kobe, CP3 and DRose do, as their drive goes beyond the on-floor game. I’d go and say that DRose and Kobe have a better drive than CP3, as they’re in far better shape than CP3 is and I generally equate poor body/conditioning with a certain level of laziness. CP3 is certainly a bad MF’er, but his shape and conditioning have always struck me as less than desirable.

by dakoose on Jan 16, 2012 8:47 AM CST up reply actions   2 recs

My 2 cents...I'm with dakoose on this one...

I’m with dakoose on this one…

I believe competitive drive also encompasses the need to do WHATEVER IS NECESSARY to make your team a winner.

DRose and CP3 do that. Tyrus, Gay, et.al. do not.

THAT is the distinction Kobe appears to make here. If DRose or CP3 had to score 1 point and make 1 assist per game but were guaranteed a win, I think they would do it.

Both have been chided for various ‘inefficiencies’ in their game ( too many shots/3 point heaves, failure to take more shots, respecively) that may make their individual stats take a hit, but they don’t seem to care, unlike most players…

...no flies on me.

I agree

Part of what’s so weird about this statement tho is how it’s an F.U. at a lot of people, Heat 3some included. Also Dwight Howard.

But you know who has to be seething inside when he reads this shit? Kevin Garnett. Don’t you think he wants to rip someone’s head off every time people consider him an after thought? I love it.

I wonder how much of this is based on Kobe's knowledge

of what people did this off-season.

I mean, aren’t Derrick’s workouts in LA?

wasnt there some article or interview

where rose or kobe basically mentioned that rose had been asking kobe for tips on how to work in the post and stuff from their time in the philipines?

i mean maybe rose asked a lot more than was told and thats where kobe gets his respect for rose from

Should've traded for Melo.

I'm sure he's just talking about elite players

He’s clearly not talking about Jeff Foster. “Competitive edge” could mean any number of things or a combination including skill, execution in the clutch, desire, preparation, etc.

Pretty huge compliment coming from that guy.
