You could see that working for the younger players on Toronto for awhile.

Though the Bulls sure look disinterested as well for awhile. You can’t expect them to play with the same energy every night nor get up for chumps like this team is without Bargnani. or with him really.

by bryield on Jan 14, 2012 9:14 PM CST via iPhone app reply actions

Like an MVP

Seriously he played great. Missed most of his 3’s when it didn’t matter. Missed some drives he usually hits and we got the rebounds anyway. Made awesome dimes he rarely makes so that was great to see. Lead the team, no hate for him on this one.

by Micdiddy on Jan 14, 2012 9:15 PM CST up reply actions

He honestly didn't look too much for his shot today

seemed intent to mainly facilitate the offense throughout the game. Alot of those 20 shots ended up being last second, bailout shots because of the Bulls struggle against the zone the Raptors used. Also missed on a few drives he usually scores on. I liked how a lot of his assists were at the rim.

Bulls defense is still incredible.

Bulls had trouble with the zone and went through some scoring lulls. If it weren’t for James Johnson who had a great 1st half, Bulls win by 20.

The closing lineup was weird Taj – Boozer – Deng/Korver – Lucas – Rose.

My take

Bulls jumped out a big lead with the starters all looking good.
Toronto’s bench went to a zone, while James Johnson and Leandro Barbosa had an offensive burst in the 2nd closing that lead.
The third quarter was pretty ugly, as neither team looked good
The 4th quarter Thibs brought Lucas in for Brewer, the bulls locked down on defense, Taj made plays busting the zone via offensive rebounding.

Brewer didn’t look particularly good
Rose played floor general rather than initiating the offense
The zone gave our 2nd unit trouble (Korver was unable to make them pay)
3 Bulls had double-doubles Rose (pts assists) Booze and Taj (pts rebounds)

by chowder on Jan 14, 2012 9:37 PM CST up reply actions

Don't forget that in the 2nd

our bench looked worse than it has in two years. Luckily this is not something to worry about long term.

Despite there being times in the 3rd where I legitimately thought we might have a small chance of losing, this turned out to be a pretty solid, satisfying win.

by Micdiddy on Jan 14, 2012 9:41 PM CST up reply actions

He might earn more playing time against the poor teams coming up on the schedule. We sure like to have a boost from a scorer with energy around Rose.

this is the first time he’s come in at the 2 spot, purely digging into Brewer and Korver’s minutes.

I liked Rose/Watson last year and I dug Rose/Lucas in this game.

by Micdiddy on Jan 14, 2012 9:44 PM CST up reply actions

yeah, two players who can create their own shot

is what the bulls needed against their zone. CJ and Rose would probably be used alot later this season if rip and rose cant break down the zone. however, I think with rip the bulls will do alot better against the zone.

indeed, he really has shown improvement in coaching in regards to offense

i jus love how he analyzes the opposing team defense and then calls a timeout if he sees something wrong with our offense. I m starting to believe he can def build a strong offense when it comes playoff time.

by Geo4MVP on Jan 14, 2012 10:24 PM CST up reply actions

Of the backcourt players

Brewer is probably the worst option against the zone. But brewer/korver/lucas are the only options right now.

by JockstrapNoah on Jan 14, 2012 10:23 PM CST up reply actions

yeah, this is where CJ missed

as well as rip obviously. Thsoe two will maek a big difference against an opposing teams zone.

by Geo4MVP on Jan 14, 2012 10:25 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah I agree

but its worrisome that the Bulls have this particular weakness, and it doesn’t seem like they know what to do immediately.

by JockstrapNoah on Jan 14, 2012 10:29 PM CST up reply actions

they are starting to get it at least

this is what the heat did against us last yr and the bulls did not respond to that. They should have done the CJ and rose combo last year more in the playoffs, but w.e, thats in the past. Tonight and yesterday showed thibs can dismantle a teams 2-3 zone.

by Geo4MVP on Jan 14, 2012 10:35 PM CST up reply actions

It helped Toronto went back to man to man after the half.

I guess they wanted a contrast by going back to the zone for the fourth quarter in particular. I would have stayed with what was working. Either way I’m glad Thibs figured it out.

korver was unable to make them pay

cause he only took 3 shots the entire game. every time lucas gave him the ball he was covered. as soon as rose came in, he got kyle a wide open shot (although he missed).

yeah, but i think they got it right if they put in two players who can create their own shot

put in a lineup of rose, CJ/lucas, korver, gibson, and noah. Lucas/Rose penetrating will be difficult for the opposing defense to cover them and korver at the same time. Utilize the pick and roll and kick it out to korver and KABOOM! 3!

Lucas and Rose on the floor at the same time,

Gave the bulls a new dynamic tonight – A second option who can create his own shot. Boozer didnt get enough low post isolation plays ran for him which sucked. The bulls need athat inside scoring consistency so badly. Anyway, a convincing win. Good Job.

by haypete on Jan 14, 2012 10:37 PM CST reply actions

when CJ comes back, there will be three options!

and i think rip can still be effective even without being able to create his own shot.

by Geo4MVP on Jan 14, 2012 10:56 PM CST up reply actions

CJ's shot selection is questionable.

Lucas also has problems with shot selection but with more experience i think he can overcome it. Rip creates for himself off the ball as does korver. Lets hope the bulls get a solid back end of the season with there full squad healthy.

i’m getting pretty tired of watching lucas chuck it… he’s been better than expected, but still…

speaking of LA...KOBE IS AT IT AGAIN

holy shit, another 40 pt performance on the horizon? damn, kobe is playin out his damn mind! what the hell did he do in germany?! find the fuckin fountain of youth?1

by Geo4MVP on Jan 14, 2012 11:38 PM CST up reply actions

yeah, i hate to say this, but i think he deserves the MVP if he continues to do well throughout the seasonn

of course, D-rose, LeBron, and Durant are gonna compete for it too, but Kobe deserves it! The man is literally carrying the lakers.

by Geo4MVP on Jan 14, 2012 11:42 PM CST up reply actions

i don't know

Rose has been awesome, but he isnt posting MVP numbers as of yet

by kpd on Jan 14, 2012 11:43 PM CST up reply actions

he will later on as the schedule loosens up a bit more

right now rose only cares bout winning and staying healthy b/c the schedule for rest of jan and feb is ridiculous. Hes going to have to be conservative as much as possible. Kobe on the other hand cant afford that since his team is without odom now.

by Geo4MVP on Jan 14, 2012 11:46 PM CST up reply actions

If he's the sole all-star from the Bulls again

and the Bulls have the best record in the league, there will be an argument for it. He’s got a similar PER as last year, just more assists, less points.

by JockstrapNoah on Jan 14, 2012 11:46 PM CST up reply actions

Chris Paul is a candidate too I'd say.

Turns a team into a contender just be being out there.

by JockstrapNoah on Jan 14, 2012 11:50 PM CST up reply actions

oh i def agree

however, durant is playing on a whole new level. Hes leading his team with the best record in the west and has shown improvement in majority of his game this year. But again, kobe is just one notch up on durant b.c of his crazy play as of late and possibly for the whole season (il lsay his avg will be close to 30 ppg).

by Geo4MVP on Jan 14, 2012 11:52 PM CST up reply actions

If Kobe averages 40 with a decent shooting percentage,

he might get it, but then again, he might not if the Lakers don’t win enough games. Usually it’s the best player on the best team. The Bulls are much more likely to be the best team, and Rose is clearly their best player, so if the Bulls finish with the best record Rose could still be MVP even if his scoring is down.

by Tim S. on Jan 15, 2012 2:57 AM CST up reply actions

OKC could be close record wise and Durants stats will likely be more MVPlike.

lol, as mentioned before, the groin injury as nothing to do with age!

i would be worried if it were some back injury/knee injury, but groin injuries are common in the NBA regardless of age. Lets hope he stays healthy once hes back (knock on wood8).

How we can win comfortably while scoring only 77 points (not unusual for the bulls) is beyond me.

How sick is our defense? Pretty f…..g sick. Has any team score 70 or more at the UC this season?

i think part of it has to do with boozy and korver finally being a bit more committed to defense

i gotta say they are alot better this season than last. Plus, I can tell rose has put in alot of effort on his defense too.

by Geo4MVP on Jan 15, 2012 12:02 AM CST up reply actions

I didn’t want to say it ‘cause I thought I’d be laughed at, but I was pleased with his defense this game.

11 AST, 0 TO, 3 STLS for derrick is sweet as well. like to see better shooting though.

They are a full 5 games behind in games played. It boggles my mind how that will have to be made up. This compressed season is so odd. Rational or not, it makes me despise Stern.
