We had a wonderful fan post after the draft about Norris Cole

and how he would solve all the Heat’s problems at PG while curing AIDS and Cancer and ending world hunger and therefore the Bulls (despite not needing a PG) should have drafted him to keep him out of the Heat’s hands.

I think I remember reading that one

I joked about it to my cell mates at work. I never liked the idea, and always liked the idea of moving up…. interesting how Brooks is ranked 55 BTW…. a lot of guys wanted to draft him. Maybe Gar was looking at the draft express rankings!

Well

From what’s being said, this guy actually plays good defense, something Dirk just doesn’t do.

by Pinke on Jul 20, 2011 2:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Dirk's ok at D.

It’s not like he’s Iverson or Nash in that respect. He’s just not a top tier defender for his position.

Anybody know of the quality of the U20 Euros compared to say, the NCAA Big East?

I’d have to think that the U20 teams would compare favorably with Sweet Sixteen college teams.

by JockstrapNoah on Jul 20, 2011 1:46 PM CDT reply actions

It looks kind of like Elite 8/Final 4 basketball.

Not much star power outside of Mirotic, but just a lot of solid fundamentals here.

Either way, it’s some pretty horrible basketball just like the final 4.

It's more like the NIT tournament

And honestly, maybe even a level below that from what I’ve seen and the way Mirotic has just been able to do whatever he wants. Not even Kevin Durant was that good in college.

by tuluse on Jul 24, 2011 6:02 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

I think it's a higher quality than is given credit for.

They’re using courts that are pretty much NBA size, so there is more room to operate for offensive players. In addition, I didn’t see much zone being played. College is a real low grade of basketball because they just pack in the paint, and the court is so small and the three point line so close, which leads to one giant congested court which really hinders offensive production.

The players also handle the ball much better than college players, seemingly shoot a bit better, and run more complex offenses than college teams.

The defense Mirotic would have faced in the Final 4 would have been tougher than he faced here, but that would have just been because of the different court and rules.

Not everyone in this tournament is at that level of competition, but I think if you put Spain, Greece, Italy, France, and Russia in the NCAA tournament, I think they would handle business for the most part and I think at least 2 of them would be in the Final 4.

Put the best 8 college teams in this tournament with FIBA/NBA like rules, and I think the college players get their asses handed to them (similar to the 2002 world championships for Team USA).

the college courts and the NBA courts are the same size

i think the Europeans shoot better, but of the games I watched, I thought the athleticism and defense is better in college b-ball. I agree, overall the offense and ball handling appeared better. But I didn’t see the same quality in guard play – not as tough getting to the basket, not as fast, not as aggressive. The big man play was superior, but I think that has a lot to do with any big man over 19 who can play immediately jumping to the NBA.

I think Spain would have won the NCAA championship this year because of the depth they possess. I think if you made up of a college all star team and got them use to playing together, they would kill those guys.

Doesn't matter how good he is now it means nothing when he comes to the NBA

The NBA is a whole different league, skill wise i mean, than any Euro League. I only criticize due to the many busts around the league. So once Mirotic has that Bulls uniform that’s when I’ll care about his stats.

Hell, the Bulls, as a team, have everything right now. Thibs just needs to focus and ingrain some offensive plays, like his defense, into the Bulls. Looking back at their games, how many broken plays were there against Miami? A shit ton due to weak ass screens, pointless passes, and just plain bad offensive execution. Oh yeah and Boozer, but I believe he’ll pick it up next season.

by bhadda2 on Jul 20, 2011 9:49 PM CDT reply actions   2 recs

Yeah Bogan Sucks... but

Korver, Watson, Brewer also share that SG position. Thibs needs to make more plays with Watson and D.rose together. Watson is first and foremost an scorer PG. If both D. Rose and Watson would play together more, and move well without the ball, Bogans wouldn’t look as bad as he does now. I mean he was the back up back up. It was Thib’s fault for giving him the starting position instead of training someone else, over the 2010-11 season, to be more proficient at the SG.

I don’t know I think my lockout/boozer/bogans rage has switch to Thibs now.

by bhadda2 on Jul 20, 2011 10:14 PM CDT up reply actions

I like Coach Nick's theory

that Thibs had a two-year plan, with defense coming first. What’s amazing is that the Bulls had the best record in the league without offensive planning. Next year, watch out!

Interview with Mirotic

Not much new, but it is interesting nonetheless:

link.

Google translate does a decent job Spanish to English.

by Heaper on Jul 21, 2011 11:05 AM CDT reply actions

It said that Dirk was his idol in the interview.

That was my hunch when we drafted him, looking at some videos of him. He just moves around on the court in a very Dirk like fashion…and it’s good imo, that Dirk is his idol. Yeah, guys like Bargnani didn’t turn out to be the next Dirk…but there has to be a player who is to Dirk what Kobe is to MJ, and hopefully Mirotic is that guy.

by JustAnotherFan on Jul 21, 2011 2:48 PM CDT reply actions

I don't care it's just nice to see the equivalent of a minor leaguer in baseball.

The kids good, really good. (How’s that for advanced scouting?) lol. When he moves up or plays against tougher competition he will most likely produce a little less, but still be productive.

With that being said, it’s so hard to judge how well an Euroleague player will do in the NBA, no matter what level that player plays on. The game is just different, for lack of a better term. It’s more rough/tough, but with good game planning and proper coaching a players skillset can be maximized.

What is Nikola’s true skillset? We really have yet to see, but I am confident that Thibs can coach him up to his fairly high potential, and at the very least he can be a proficient 6th/7th man, on a playoff/championship team. Starter on other teams.

According to his coaches in Spain he really wants to be the best, and has great work ethics.

He has the tools, he has the will, he puts work…

Today boxscore

Mirotic will lead Spain in the Final game tomorrow, playing for the gold medal.

by amlmart1 on Jul 23, 2011 4:33 PM CDT up reply actions

he doesnt quite "have to tools". athleticism will likely be an issue, and about the only compliment

i can give him on that is he seems to have a fairly quick first step (like, literally: if he takes one step he looks quick; two and hes slow). i think the degree to which he is able to tighten up his dribbling in order to drive past 4s, and develop some kind of decent post game to punish 3s- he wont ever be beating them off the dribble- will determine whether he can be an 8th man or a starter in the nba.

I don't know if he's ever gonna be a guy that you can just give the ball to and expect him to make something happen

But he’s great at blowing by guys when they close out too hard on him, and because of his jumper, that’s going to happen a lot, particularly when there’s another guy on his team capable of collapsing the defense, such as one Derrick Rose.

Of course, it’s the Ukraine; best known for riding New York subways and smashing the game of Risk being played by Kramer and Newman.

Mirotic MVP.

Best scorer ever in U20 European Championship.

According to the Spanish coach Mirotic was the third best player in last NBA draft.

by amlmart1 on Jul 24, 2011 2:06 PM CDT reply actions

Match made in heaven?

Mirotic, a humble, almost reluctant super star, was chosen as the face of the tournament in the promotional posters around Bilbao a long time before the first tip-off, as the organisers felt he best embodies the combination of skill, talent and ethos that, ultimately, are the values and qualities that FIBA Europe aspires these young athletes will take from their participation in a Youth European Championship and will carry with them for the rest of their careers.
