NBA Finals Thread Game 5 (6/9/11)

Will James bounce back from his eight-point effort in game 4?  The American public may hate him, but they are also tuning in to see what happens next.  But this is an important game for Dallas as well; their last home-court game in what is now a best of three series.

If you haven't been following Sebastian Pruiti's analysis at NBA Playbook, why not?  It's almost better than watching the game -- well, not quite, but it's like being with the team when the coach reviews film.  He shows a couple of adjustments by Dallas that worked wonders -- use Nowitzki as a decoy while someone else sets the screen for the pick and roll, or continue using the double screen that confuses Miami.  And he shows James running away from the basket or passing the ball unwisely on the pick and roll, as well as what happens when James instead drives towards the basket or at least threatens to do so.

As Pruiti shows, James being more aggressive is not just about shooting the ball more, nor is it about shooting out of double teams -- it's about moving towards the basket or threatening to do so, so that not only drives but also passes and outside shooting become more effective.  If James wants to facilitate or shoot from outside effectively, he must still force the other team to take him seriously as a threat to drive.  It's when the other team is worried about him driving that he can effectively pass or pull up for a jumper.  And in game 4 it wasn't great defense that stopped LeBron from driving, it was LeBron being passive, turning down opportunities to drive.

Why would LeBron do this?  We may never know.  But it is the reason he can be the best player in the league and still be a disappointment.  Of course, if the Heat had lost to the Bulls maybe Wade would be the goat.  And if the Heat win the series maybe people will forget about LeBron's disappearing act.  But if Dallas wins, LeBron may never live it down.  And even if Dallas loses, people will remember this crack in LeBron's armor.  Play him hard enough, and he may disappear.  It gives competitors -- like the Bulls -- hope.

Is this fair to James?  Perhaps not.  After all, Rose kind of pulled a disappearing act of his own in the ECF, as did Wade in a couple of games.  Jason Terry's had some bad games in the Finals.  But MVP or no MVP, James is held to a different standard.  He has all the athletic tools to be better than Jordan, so he's not allowed to disappear -- ever.

All that being said, the Heat still have been ahead during much of this series.  When they lose to the Mavs, they look like the better athletes getting beat by the better team -- and then just barely.  The series is tied 2-2.  The Heat have three more games with two at home.  They are still the favorites.  Will they be able to adjust?  Will James just come out on fire?  Will the Mavs continue to confuse them?  I'm eager to see what happens.

Lebron will try to come up big tonight.

But if he’s really forcing it out there it could backfire on the heat. GO MAVS! Expect more floppiness.

Lebron has no moves

all you gotta do, is stand in front of him, eliminate his transition game

He’s certainly lost some quickness after playing 1000 games or so, don’t you guys think? I mean he can’t outmaneuver Kidd.

If this game is to 'define' Lebron's career

Then I hope he goes 0-30, 0-10 from the line, 0 rebs, 0 assists, 15 TO’s, fouls out, gets a technical and the Heat lose by 50.

When Phil draw that play for Kukoc, Pip sit on the bench and wouldn’t go back. He HAS to get the last shot…he just didn’t do it because he was playing with the GOAT.

im more looking for moves or shots

that in itself were unstoppable, no so much when done by a certain player. For example, if anyone learned the skyhook (ala Magic Johnson) then they gain this impossible shot, and if htey master it, theres no stopping them. Same with jordans and dirks fallaways. they are just techniques that anyone, regardless of size, if they learn it they gain this unstoppable weapon. Shaq was unstoppable in of himself just because of his sheer size, and moses malone might have had a trademark of missing on purpose for his own putbacks, but i think his being so athletic had much to do with it as well

Hey Rose. I don't see the appeal!

by Dils on Jun 9, 2011 9:45 PM CDT reply actions

The downfall of Lebron James is great.

And I’m not just talking about his poor play, but the regression in his game. He no longer takes anyone off the dribble in the half court. He’s pretty much just a jumpshooter in the half court game now, and that makes Miami so much easier to beat than if Lebron just played like he did in Cleveland.

We were just unfortunate to go against the Heat when Lebron was in a hot streak shooting wise. It’s going to be tough for him to get the Heat a championship if he continues to just be a umpshooter, especially as Wade starts to decline.

greg anthony (hate him as a knick who fought w/ suns great kj, lol!) said something about this towards the end of the season or early in the playoffs… something about how so much of the pro game really comes down to who takes the game to who.

i’m not even paraphrasing here, but however he put it, it was the most succinctly intelligent thing i’ve ever heard an nba commentator say. certainly on nba tv, anyway!

Well, the double screen play has also worked wonders.

The Mavs are not just about Nowitzki — they run plays on offense, with multiple options. And they improvise and adjust during the game.

Furthermore, playing aggressively under pressure in the Finals comes with experience. The Mavs are far more experienced than the Bulls. In fact, they are also more experienced than most of the Heat players. LeBron and Bosh have disappeared in this series; I’m not convinced that’s because of the Mavs’ great defense — maybe they are also suffering from a lack of experience and a case of nerves.

The good news is that the Bulls can get the experience by climbing the mountain again and this time playing like they expected to be there. What I’m most concerned about is why our own coaching genius Thibs didn’t come up with offensive wrinkles like the Mavs’ double screen. Is it because he chose to emphasize defense this year? Is it because he doesn’t have confidence in his player’s offensive abilities? Or is it because he’s a far better defensive coach than he is an offensive coach? I don’t know the answer to that one.
