In the past months we have witnessed how Social media Sites have helped organize millions of people toward one united Goal. In countries like Egypt a 40 year dictatorship was overthrown. In others like Syria and Libya, massive protests were organized, that had the countries leaders fearing a revolution. All this has been accomplished in countries where internet access is restricted and highly supervised by the authoritarian governments.
But fortunately for us, we leave in a democracy, where free speech is available to all of us. We have all the tools necessary and non of the restrictions, to get organized and show the NBA and its players, that it's not only about them, and that those projected revenue numbers they are trying to divide are not a given, if we FANS decide otherwise.
We also have bargaining chips that we can use to pressure them into getting this thing resolved quickly.
1. We can threaten with not attending the first week of basketball games of the new season. that there could be a 2% decrease in revenues for the year, or about 60 million dollars in lost revenues from ticket sales alone.
2. Refuse to buy any NBA merchandise
3. Refuse to use NBA.COM to follow our teams, but instead go to other sites as SBNATION.COM for our info.
These are just some ideas, but the point is we have to let them know, we are a big part of this negotiation, and if they are going to let their greed take away our passion of following our teams, we can strike back.
I put it on all the PRO bloggers at SB Nation to get this point out there and through to the NBA. If the internet can overthrow murdering dictators and make them run away and beg for mercy form their people, then picture the damage it could inflict on the NBA, its players and the Owners.
I HOPE THEY BOTH COME TO THEIR SENSES AND COMPLETE A DEAL SOON, SO NO SUCH THING IS NECESSARY. BUT IT HAS TO BE ON THE TABLE.
