NBA Finals Thread, Game One (5/31/11).

Okay, I think I'm over the Bulls' collapse.  I'm not rooting for or against anyone in the Finals yet, although I know most of you are rooting for the Mavs.

SB Nation has been doing itself proud previewing the Finals.  I did enjoy this Andrew Sharp article reminding us why we hate the Heat, and I enjoyed disputing this Tom Ziller article taking the Devil's advocate point of view that we should hate Mark Cuban (as well as the side conversation in the comments about Cuban vs. Reinsdorf).  I also enjoyed this Sebastian Pruiti article for SB Nation breaking down the offensive sets for both teams in the Finals.  (Warning: includes video of the Bulls' defense breaking down against actual offensive sets.  Could be painful.)

I'll also give a shout out to Coach Nick for his video preview of the NBA Finals.

Although the Mavs are underdogs, there are some pundits who pick them, especially if Wade continues to suffer from his mystery injury.  The Mavs clearly have a better offense than the Bulls, but do they have enough defense to slow down the Heat?  There's the old question about the bench play -- will Miller and Haslem shine off the bench for the Heat, or will the Heat bench revert to its regular season mediocrity?  I would say both of these teams are more complete and far more experienced than the young, defense-oriented Bulls, but I'm not sure if the Mavs are actually better than the Heat or the Bulls.  That experience does seem important, though, and I hope the veterans on the Mavs will not lose their cool.

I know it probably sounds wishy-washy, but I'm genuinely hoping for great basketball from both teams.  But I understand the hate for the Heat, really I do.  Maybe the Mavs will show the Bulls how it is done.

No, it was last night.

that ziller article is a joke.

why are these guys trying so hard to make people to like miami and lebron? i used to follow some sbn editors on twitter and they were consistently tweeting negative shit about rose and how awesome miami is. playing the “devil’s advocate” just makes some guys look really stupid. if you aren’t smart enough, don’t try to show us different angles.

i’m rooting for jason kidd btw. he was my hero when i was a teenager and i used to even root for new jersey just because of him. i have no idea on dalls defense but i’m sure that they will do a lot better than the bulls on offense. they have the best scorer in the world, they have one of the best playmakers ever to play the game, they have great perimeter shooters and umm jj barea. in short, they are so much more versatile than us. hope they will be allowed to play tough and nowitzki can get as many calls as lebron and wade will.

Grab it, Jo!

The Mavs are not as reliant on foul calls.

They drive to the basket less, shoot the open jumper more. They need to keep their shooting percentage high to make up the difference.

Yes, I thought the Ziller article was weak, as I noted in the comment section. But I’m sure he was assigned to play Devil’s advocate, and did the best he could. The Mavs are really hard to hate. Dirk is German, though. Shouldn’t all patriots root for Miami? No, I thought not. I have nothing.

by Tim S. on May 31, 2011 4:49 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't know, but it's almost like they are getting paid by the NBA.

We get it, ok! Lebron and the Heat are good, and they have a good shot at the title, but no need for you to shove it down our throats! What’s even more stupid is the bandwagon fans that have come out of the woodwork. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many stupid/opportunistic bandwagon fans in my life. If they win, i’ll cheer for them, if they lose, i’ll stop cheering for them, lol! What a joke, and they have the audacity to come out and ridicule other teams for losing to the Heat. BTW, I still can’t get over that ridiculous flop Lebron pulled on Rose in game 5. Absolutely disguisting.

by BullsFan22 on May 31, 2011 4:50 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

Really? I've met no bandwagon fans for the Heat.

(Although there are plenty of bandwagon Mavs fan on BaB.) Do you live in Miami?

by Tim S. on May 31, 2011 4:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Not on BaB, but on general NBA sites/forums such as ESPN, NBA.com and NBA/youtube.

Maybe I just have a good eye to it or I have been spending a bit too much reading ESPN articles and watching nba.com youtube highlights, lol!

I don't think Wade had that pressure really

And Bosh seemed like more of a guy that needed attention and obviously couldn’t even get to the playoffs consistently.

by Slick Ric on May 31, 2011 5:58 PM CDT reply actions

ugh... go... heat....

but really though, I wanna make sure people are making the distinction between bandwagon fan and “new fan”. all my sport-loving friends have always been Heat fans since kids. what I do see is a lot of casual fans or new fans to the Heat and to basketball. they’ll obviously cheer for the hometown team that happens to have Lebron and Wade. I haven’t seen rampant people-changing-teams-type bandwagon jumping. but I have seen a lot of people who weren’t into sports or basketball getting into it and gaining interest. I’m alright with that.

From the slums of Thibs, Lu-Deng Clan strikes again. We got the Brewza, the Booza, Ol' Dirty Bogans, InspektAsik, Watson the Chef, U-Taj, Jo-Face Killah, and D-E-R(R)-I-C-K Rose!

by BULLieving in Miami on May 31, 2011 6:17 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

Hmmm I can see that

I’m still more rooting for the Mavs more than jeering Heat. Whats really shifted to both cheering and jeering though was the inconsistent calls in our series.

At this point the teams are obviously evenly matched in many regards. Hubie and Tim Legler both mentioned the calls effected the Bulls play. Its just not possible to not have any effect what so ever just shows how strong the stigma is of calling bs on the refs now. (with good reason at times really)

I’m not a die hard fan I think. When the Bulls win thats great when they lose then the other team beat them. I’m okay with that because either way the winning team earned the victory. No one should have an excuse or take away from the game just let them play.

Never thought J Kidd would be at this point again

Everyone always says how predictable the season is but I see a ton of analysts wrong way more than they’re right.
Then when things happen they talk like everything was a foregone conclusion.

The last few seasons the playoffs really have been exciting to me and not as obvious as some make it seem.

I thought this years outcome to the Finals was particularly surprising.

I had a feeling Miami might get there… but Dallas? The same Dallas that choked year after year after year? Sweeping LA? Wow. I’m glad though, because I love Dirk and Kidd (and to a lesser extent, Marion and Chandler).

Yeah Dirk really hasn't gotten a lot of thought to his ability because of all that

Some people are actually surprised at his play this post season but even when Dallas lost to me he always put up big numbers.

Just watch

I guarantee the Heat extend their defense big time. All those shooters won’t have nearly the time and space to get their shots off. I haven’t seen OKC or LA really try to defend their shooters the right way. It’s the same reason I thought the Bulls would have beaten the Mavs

Plus, Miami’s offense has become underrated after that series with us

Heat only have 10 though.

Mavs look like they took some good lessons from the Bulls on how to guard the Heat. Mavs are a bit more diverse on the offensive end, and Dirk is a better scorer than anyone on the Bulls, so I think if Mavs can keep up this defense, they will be fine in the long run.

Sometimes when teams lose its painted as if they had no chance and needed another addition to their team. Rose makes a freethrow or a shot and that series goes at least 6.

The scarier thing is.

What the Bulls did to the Heat’s offense, and what the Mavs did to the Heat’s offense in the first quarter here.

If their offense proves not being potent enough, this isn’t a team that is going to win a lot of Finals if any. There defense will let up eventually.

Go out get one of Jamal Crawford, Ben Gordon, or Jason Richardson. Preferably Crawford or Richardson since we could get them in free agency.

Then sign Michael Redd for the minimum.

As posted elsewhere, I think they’re going to try to trade up for Jimmer Fredette, which should give them even more shooting.

Rose sucked. Boozer blew. Noah was meh. Korver was invisible. Deng was actually the most reliable and consistent of our guys. So 3 out of 4 of our big 4 played pretty bad, our best 3 point shooter was not making 3s, and we could have still won 4-1 with a bounce here or an inch there or a call there. If we even have Courtney fucking Lee, we win that series.

Wade is almost 30, only going to get older, and you can already see him slowing down. Much like the series against us

this really just comes down to the Heat having the best player on the planet. Nobody is really in Lebron’s league at the moment. Dirk probably comes a little closer than Rose, but it’s still probably not good enough. The periphery players have to be so much better than Miami’s that it just doesn’t even matter. I personally think Lebron would be doing this if he was in Cleveland too.

Thats still big to tell one team to over come one sided officiating. These create turnovers and extra opportunities for the other team that haven’t been earned.

Like a swipe or a good defensive play for the Mavs being called a foul. Instead of a fast break the Heat get the ball back or go to the line for some points.

But no ones even disputing those fouls

If one team shoots more free throws that doesn’t mean the refs stink. Its gonna be based off inconsistent calls. I saw many more bad calls that were in the Heats favor that the refs clearly didn’t see. (off replay.. I wouldn’t of seen it real time either but thats still why I think if you didn’t see it don’t call it)

I honestly think the refs have been bad and normally never say a word. If the Heat win I don’t really care to some degree every team at this stage deserves to win.

We were likely the second best team in the league this year. It think us and the Lakers would have been the best chance to take them out

If the Bulls want to have a shot at beating the Heat

The FO absolutely has to get another great creator on offense.

"If the Bulls are healthy it could get ugly." - Joakim Noah

by bryield on May 31, 2011 10:50 PM CDT up reply actions

And that's all it would take.

A stable, reliable, consistent creator and shot maker. Mayo is the closest player to that who is available. Add another creator and the pressure is taken off of Rose and he does better, and Noah and Boozer have more opportunities as well. We win in 5, 6 tops. Broken record here, but the majority of our key guys played poorly and yet every game was still close deep into it.

tit really seems like the mavs can't beat the heat

what is disappointing is that we could have beat them. we won a game by 20 and lost another in ot when we had 2 shots to win. I’m not saying the bulls were better than the heat, but it was possible this year.

heres the key to the bulls future success

not only they need a shot creator, but i think they need a mroe reliable 6th man. i mean, korver is decent as our 3 pt specialist but we need a jason terry/jamal crawford 6th man type of player on our team.

I propose bulls get mayo, hopefully hamilton becomes available in the free agency once the three way trade happens and him as our 6th man will play wonders for the bulls success.

BG really is kinda the perfect fit imo

Iw ould be fucking elated if we went in to next season with a starting lineup of Rose, Brewer, Luol, Boozer, Noah. With BG, CJ, Taj and Omer coming off the bench.

Still don’t think that’s a title team, but we’d be fun as hell to watch, and right there with the Heat in terms of overall record

it depends on noah and boozer teamwork too

cause those guys costed the bulls lots of points. heres to hoping boozer develops the pick n roll and noah develops his jumper.

by Geo4MVP on May 31, 2011 11:08 PM CDT up reply actions

overall juice, its all bout rose and his progress as being a better passer

but, he needs to become mroe efficient on offense. i do believe his 3 pt percentage will go up as well as his fg percentage. i expect him to take more jump shots next season than this season because great players imprve their jump shot year after year.

It always seemed like BG should of been a Bull for life in the first place

That 09 season was the most exciting and stressful season I’ve seen.

I was a huge Ben Gordon fan.

The problem is, the organization was probably not such a big fan of him, especially after the contract he demanded. After the contract they offered Deng, I could see why Gordon felt lowballed. I think they should have been able to sign both players with the money they gave Deng.

I still remember many times people questioning BG

Before 07 and obviously even after 09. I thought the whole debate over him starting or not was irrelevant he gladly came off the bench. Also sometimes it seemed like he was compared with all star expectations for most of his time with the Bulls.

i think steve kerr was dead o nthe bulls other weakness

we gotta too many specialists on the bench. either they are super good on defense and below average or terrible on offense or vice versa. if we can get a SG and a 6th man, then rose is gonna get alot of open looks on offense.

So true...
These guys wanted to win a championship for the worst fans in America!

I truly believe if these guys got together in Philly or Chicago, the backlash would’ve been less. There’s something about these guys doing it in a town that not only doesn’t care about basketball but has no shame in being bandwagon jumpers. That’s the part that always bugged me about their decision. That town doesn’t even deserve a team meanwhile Seattle has nothing.

Hey Rose. I don't see the appeal!
